The Approach Angle Nate Schwartz (@_nateschwartz) and Kyle Bland (@blandalytics) discuss how to use a variety of batted ball metrics. They start by talking about how average exit velocity can be deceptive, and isn't the best way to evaluate how hard hitters hit the ball. Instead, they pivot to talking about HardHit% and get into power stats such as max exit velocity and 90th percentile exit velocity. Then, they move into batted ball metrics that go beyond just how hard the ball is hit, such as Air EV (line drives and flyballs) and barrel rate. Kyle also touches on why PullAir% is an important stat that influences power outside of exit velocity. They wrap up by bringing it all together in xwOBACON, a one stat that measures everything on batted balls. Coby Mayo was outstanding at third base yesterday by starting a pair of crucial double plays. However, the outfield defense was a little lackluster.
After getting bottom-10 production out of the First Base position last season, the Orioles thought outside the box. They thought so far outside the box, that they left the country entirely and brought back a polar bear. That's right, Pete Alonso is here. He's a force to be reckoned with. Tune in for a preview of the O's first base situation, including a quick look at Ryan Mountcastle, and quicker looks at Coby Mayo and Samuel Basallo. It's less than ideal so far in Sarasota that two emerging, young Orioles stars in Jackson Holliday and Jordan Westburg are already lost for the start of the MLB season. Luke Jones and Nestor discuss what it means for Coby Mayo and newly-acquired Blaze Alexander now that grapefruit baseball has begun and jobs are available in Baltimore. The post Luke Jones and Nestor discuss Jordan Westburg injury and hopes for Coby Mayo at third base first appeared on Baltimore Positive WNST.
Well, the news just keeps getting worse for Jordan Westburg, as his oblique strain looks like a cramp now that a partial tear to his right UCL has taken center stage. Out through April at a minimum, the Orioles--and Westburg--hope that a PRP injection will salvage his season, otherwise it looks like Tommy John Surgery for the former All-Star. Paul & Zach discuss the impact Westburg's injury will have, and what it means for Coby Mayo. Plus, the Polar Bear has played two games and has hit two HRs. So far, so good? And does Heston Kjerstad have a chance to make this roster? Find out that and more on The Bat Around!

Paul and Zach get you primed for the Grapefruit League schedule which is set to begin on Friday. Does Chris Bassitt put the Orioles over the top? Fantasy Baseball Live – November 30, 2025 – 2:00 pmMicrosoft Teams:Segment 1 – Prospects – NL East – Atlanta Braves and Miami MarlinsQuick BreakSegment 2 – News and Notes1.Light week due to the holiday but we did have another big trade. The Rangers trade Marcus Seimen to the Mets for Brandon Nimmo. a.I wrote 1000 words about the deal to our Patreon members. What did you think of the deal?b.We just talked about the Mets last Sunday and I don't know if this clarifies things or makes it more muddled. We will look at both the infield and outfieldc. We discussed Josh Smith getting time in the outfield last week, but assuming they don't sign anyone, he should open as the starting second baseman. Thoughts on Josh Smith at second?2.The Blue Jays made noise by signing Dylan Cease for 7-years and $210 million. WOW. That's a lot of scratch. Did you like the signing?3.The Orioles finally spend a little bit of money, signing Ryan Helsley to a 2-year, $28 million contract. It takes a big closer arm off the board. Your thoughts?Segment 3 – Fantasy Questions of the NL East – NationalsWashington Nationals1.James Wood hit 31 home runs last season, but only 7 in the second half. He's the ninth outfielder off the board. Is that something that appeals to you?a.We will look at other outfielders going around him2.Dylan Crews – sigh.a.2026 stat line – AB, HR, SB, and BA3.I liked Brady House in the minor leagues and have him in one Dynasty League. I'm worried that his poor approach is catching up to him. In 74 MLB games, he walked eight times. a.Is this a growth stock or someone who will start the season in the minor leagues?b.The NFBC drafters are not bullish as he's the 46th third baseman off the board (ADP of 598). Is that worth a pick in the low 30s in D&H Leagues?4.Daylen Lile showed flashes last season, posting a .299 batting average with nine home runs and eight stolen bases in 351 plate appearances.a.The NFBC drafters seem to think he's a growth stock as he's the 50th outfielder off the board.
