This week, Skyler and Evan present a conundrum that finally needs to be talked about. The Colorado Rockies and being frequently outnumbered by a sea of visiting fans at Coors Field. What has this organization done to foster a fan culture that would bring a wave of purple to the ballpark? On the bright side, Antonio Senzatela is back, the young bullpen has been very impressive, and your High-A Spokane Indians are the Northwest League champions! Learn more about your ad choices. This week's pod features a couple of pitchers who have been carving up hitters this year without the normal huge velocity we tend to associate with great pitching performances. John Michael Bertrand has now won the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week honors twice, while Dylan Cumming was the Pitcher of the Month for the Northwest League in April — and has a decent shot at repeating the honor in May. Both of them were generous enough to share their baseball journeys with me and detail their preparation and thought processes when on the mound. This one's a little noisy — as happens with in-stadium interviews, but it's well worth it. Both of these guys are thoughtful, articulate, and engaging! There R Giants is a reader-supported publication. Around The Nest is the Blue Jays' minor league podcast where the broadcasters from up and down the farm system get together to talk about the performances of Blue Jays prospects in the past two weeks. This week, we welcome Chris Georges, the Vancouver Canadians' broadcast assistant, to the Nest. Chris G. is joined by Chris Jared of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Larry Larson of the Dunedin Blue Jays, and of course podcast host and the Voice of the Canadians, Tyler Zickel. The Fisher Cats have had solid pitching performances—like Adam Macko striking out nine Yard Goats—but have had weak run support (sound familiar). Overall, the team is still loose, believing that they are better than their 15-21 win-loss record. Before a rough start Friday evening, Trenton Wallace had been solid for New Hampshire, sporting a funky delivery. Alan Roden has struggled at the plate but has been working hard, one-on-one with manager Cesar Martin. The D-Jays batters had been taking a lot of walks earlier in the season, but had seemed to be little overeager lately. On the positive side, Christian Feliz and Yhoangel Aponte have been taking patient, encouraging at bats and lately, Manuel Beltre seems to have turned a corner, taking better at bats and getting a walkoff hit. On the negative side, Arjun Nimmala had been placed on the development list strikeouts have been piling up now that he's seeing more breaking balls. On the mound side, Juaron Watts-Brown has been displaying a nasty slider and an underrated change-up and Connor O'Halloran has demonstrated that he can grind through games in which he just didn't have his best stuff. Vancouver's Jace Bohrofen had been getting walks and making good contact but had not displayed home run power until this week when he hit two. Ryan McCarty has been delivering clutch hits for the Canadians and is seen as a guy with a big heart who is easy to root for. Japanese-Brazilian Raphael Ohashi has almost been perfect out of the bullpen, starting the season with 15 consecutive scoreless innings against five different Northwest League teams. Ohashi will be given a start in game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

After a day off, host Blake Murphy is back to set the table for final two weeks of the MLB season. He quickly revisits the Blue Jays' weekend sweep of the Red Sox, before looking ahead to the remaining schedule for all teams in the hunt for the American League Wild Card. Next, we turn out attention to a positive story within the Blue Jays organization, recognizing the Vancouver Canadians, who for the fifth time in franchise history and the first time in High-A, are champions of the Northwest League. Blake catches up with the C's manager, Brent Lavallee, to talk about the team's remarkable 2023 season (14:43). We shift focus back to the big leagues ahead of this week's series in New York with Bob Lorenz, YES Network studio host, for some insight on the Bronx Bombers and their recent success (35:34). In the second hour, Sportsnet Blue Jays producer and numbers specialist, Chris Black joins Blake in-studio to dive into some recent new data around the Blue Jays, specifically at the plate, and identifies which "fringe guys" deserve to be in the lineup more frequently (50:40). The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliates.

Matt and Blake discuss the comments of Elias Pettersson's agent saying they're going to wait until the end of the year before considering an extension, as well as the possibility of a Tyler Myers trade tomorrow after his bonus is paid out. The guys discuss Bob McKenzie's draft list with another Vancouver prospect ranked #1; Olli Juolevi on a PTO in Arizona, and the NHLPA looking into the cellphone matter with Mike Babcock and Columbus Blue Jackets players. Other topics include the Lions game Saturday and the stakes in the CFL West over the final third of the season; the Whitecaps signing another Canadian international; and the Vancouver Canadians splitting in Everett and coming home to hopefully win another Northwest League pennant. Rob Williams stops by to discuss Pettersson's future, Quinn Hughes' captaincy (and Glory Juice recipe), his pick to shine at this weekend's Young Stars tournament, and digital ads on rinkboards, which the NHL is defending in the most NHL way ever. Rick Campbell tells us how the Lions spent their bye week, what his self-scout turned up in terms of improvement for the final 6 games, the improving health of Bo Lokombo and his BC running mate Ben Hladik, and the eye he is keeping on Nathan Rourke down south with the NFL's Jaguars. After a weekend to digest the news, Matt and Blake dig deep on the repercussions of the Oliver Ekman-Larsson buyout and what this now allows the Canucks' to do this offseason. The guys also talk about another home-run opening day for the B.C. Lions, an incredible event that drew 33K inside BC Place for LL Cool J and the first shutout win in nearly 46 years. Plus, the Vancouver Canadians, already off to the Northwest League playoffs after winning the season's first-half. Jeff Paterson (Rink Wide: Vancouver) stops by to talk about the OEL buyout and shopping priorities. Do they still need to trade a winger? Is the biggest need a third-line centre or top-4 defenceman? Will they still explore a JT Miller trade? Lions owner Aman Doman takes a bow and wraps up the weekend that was for the Lions. Doman mentions other CFL clubs adopting their practice of festivities to draw young people to CFL stadiums, as well as commentating on the game, the concert, and the party on the plaza.Presented by Go Goat SportsSee omny.fm/listener for privacy information.

The broadcasters for the Buffalo Bisons, New Hampshire Fisher Cats, and Vancouver Canadians gather to talk about how Blue Jays prospects have started the 2023 season. Pat Malacaro (Bisons) introduces listeners to the hand gestures that can be used to challenge an automated ball and strike call, Ernie Clement's hot start, and who is in the early running to be a spot starter for the Toronto Blue Jays. Steve Goldberg (Fisher Cats) gives us an update on Ricky Tiedemann, Jimmy Burnette's uptick in fastball velocity, and the strong starts by Leo Jimenez, Trevor Schwecke, Dylan Rock, and Surrey's Damiano Palmegiani. Host Tyler Zickel (Canadians) thinks Vancouver is the most talented team in the Blue Jays' farm system. Devereaux Harrison, Justin Kelly, and Dahian Santos have seen velo increases, Riley Tirotta is the Canadians' (and perhaps the Northwest League's) hottest hitter, and coach Ashley Stephenson's work with infielder Josh Kasevich using a special pair of glasses. Three of the Toronto Blue Jays' four minor league teams are chasing a playoff berth (sorry, Fisher Cats fans). On this episode of Around The Nest we talk about the Jays' newly-drafted players like Cade Doughty, Alan Roden, and Peyton Williams injecting their talent into a surging Dunedin club alongside Edisson Gonzalez and Devonte Brown. We dissect New Hampshire's tough season that also featured a lot of individual positives, including Parker Caracci's recent promotion and Paxton Schultz turning his year around after a sluggish start. Vancouver has a magic number of six and several viable paths to the Northwest League championship series; the Canadians have been getting great performances from Orioles reject Garrett Farmer and closer Connor Cooke. We also get a report on the bumpy path Eric Pardinho has taken on his path back from injuries. This episode of Around The Nest was hosted by the radio voice of the Vancouver Canadians Tyler Zickel and featured Dunedin Blue Jays communications and admin specialist Andrew Thriffiley, and New Hampshire Fisher Cats broadcaster David Korzeniowski.
Pitcher Chris Matlock talks us through his progression as an unheralded kid from Springfield, Missouri to becoming the 21st round draft pick for the Texas Rangers in 2009. He went from the junior college ranks to the University of Central Missouri, where Matlock shoved his way to NCAA All-American status and was chosen as the relief pitcher of the year for all of NCAA Division-II baseball. As a closer, Chris Matlock pitched in one of the longest games UCM had ever played in in the 2008 Division-II College World Series. He went on to be chosen for the UCM Athletics Hall of Fame in 2017. It was far from all roses for Chris Matlock when he reached the minor leagues and the Class A short season Spokane Indians of the Northwest League. Lingering shoulder problems and an ill-fated game of long toss led to an abrupt and stunning exit. Without knowing what would come next, Chris Matlock was back in Springfield, Missouri, where it all began. "Burger Bites" is written, produced and edited by Rance Burger. Back in 2018 he led the Northwest League in stolen bases on his way to an All-Star game nod, and has a career MiLB batting average of .264 over three seasons. In 157 games he has 60 stolen bases, 10 career homeruns (4 this season in his first 15 games) and 25 doubles. ESOL News Oregon, by Timothy Krause Text of article: AUGUST 2, 2019) Professional baseball is a popular sport in the United States. In fact, the game was invented in New York state in 1839. It quickly became known as "America's pastime." Today, there are 30 Major League baseball teams in the Major League, and 256 Minor League baseball teams across the country. Professional baseball was played nearly continuously in Portland from 1901 until 2010, except during the 1994 season. The original Portland Beavers was the longest lived team. They played every season from 1901 to 1972, though occasionally under a different name. Various Minor League baseball teams played in Portland thereafter. Since 2010, there has been no professional baseball played within the city limits. However, there are two opportunities to watch up-and-coming baseball athletes at play. One is the Portland Pickles in Southeast Portland. The other is the Hillsboro Hops in the western suburbs. Since 2013, the Hillsboro Hops have played at Ron Tonkin Field in the nearby suburb of Hillsboro, Oregon, about 15 miles west of Portland. They are part of the Northwest League. The team name is a reference to the plant used in beer brewing (Oregon is the second-largest hop-producing US state by volume), as well as to various baseball terms such as the short hop, bad hop, and crow hop. Established in 2015, the Portland Pickles is an active team in the Great West League. The Pickles play at Walker Stadium located inside Lents Park in Southeast Portland. The team's website says, "The Pickles are all about FUN and are recognized for presenting the best live-sporting entertainment package in the Portland area." Read by Eric Dodson. CC BY-NC-SA. We sat down w/Trevor Schwecke this week. He didn't have a single DI or DII scholarship offer out of High School. A family friend helped him land a spot as a walk-on with UW-Milwaukee. After 3 years of incredibly hard work, Trevor was drafted in the 13th round by the Toronto Blue Jays. He's currently in the top 15 in BA, OBP, Double and AB's in the entire Northwest League. He shares his story on this week's episode.
0:00-6:00 – We introduce our guest, sportswriter Josh Horton of the Everett Herald. Josh covers the AquaSox during the summer, making him arguably the most qualified person on earth to do an episode about the Mariners’ affiliate in Everett. 6:00-16:00 – How do the AquaSox adjust to life in Everett? Which of the players have the most unique stories? Who plays the role of translator for the AquaSox’ Spanish-speaking players? Kate points out the Mariners’ promotion strategies when it comes to challenging their prospects. 16:15-25:00 – Austin Shenton talk! Josh has seen him play, in person! We run through some of the less-heralded players in Everett who have stood out in their first month of pro ball. What sort of skills should we look for in the low levels of the minor leagues? Also, son of Beef Dad is discussed. 25:10-33:20 – The AquaSox fired their manager, and that’s about all we know. As Josh tells us, there’s lots of secrecy around this team. He can also confirm that the Northwest League gets chippy, and the championship was once won on a walk-off balk. 33:30-44:00 – What is the best name on the AquaSox roster? There are legitimately too many to choose from. Damon Casetta-Stubbs is an interesting high-ceiling guy that many fans aren’t paying attention to. And at long last, some love for Trent Tingelstad and Carter Bins. What is the best between-innings game or promotion at Funko Field? 45:45-1:01:55 – Robinson Canó stories! Believe it or not, the Mets legend was once an Everett AquaSox. How creepy is Webbly the Frog? Is Webbly in cahoots with The Rainforest Café? Stop making the “When are they getting traded?” joke about all of our baseball children!!! Matthew ends with arguably his worst take yet, combining his loves for West Coast Conference Basketball and being wrong. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
