Tim Restall calls in to preview this week's series between the Yard Goats and the Portland Sea Dogs.

Around The Nest is the Blue Jays' minor league podcast where the broadcasters from up and down the farm system get together to talk about the performances of Blue Jays prospects in the past two weeks. This week, we welcome Chris Georges, the Vancouver Canadians' broadcast assistant, to the Nest. Chris G. is joined by Chris Jared of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Larry Larson of the Dunedin Blue Jays, and of course podcast host and the Voice of the Canadians, Tyler Zickel. The Fisher Cats have had solid pitching performances—like Adam Macko striking out nine Yard Goats—but have had weak run support (sound familiar). Overall, the team is still loose, believing that they are better than their 15-21 win-loss record. Before a rough start Friday evening, Trenton Wallace had been solid for New Hampshire, sporting a funky delivery. Alan Roden has struggled at the plate but has been working hard, one-on-one with manager Cesar Martin. The D-Jays batters had been taking a lot of walks earlier in the season, but had seemed to be little overeager lately. On the positive side, Christian Feliz and Yhoangel Aponte have been taking patient, encouraging at bats and lately, Manuel Beltre seems to have turned a corner, taking better at bats and getting a walkoff hit. On the negative side, Arjun Nimmala had been placed on the development list strikeouts have been piling up now that he's seeing more breaking balls. On the mound side, Juaron Watts-Brown has been displaying a nasty slider and an underrated change-up and Connor O'Halloran has demonstrated that he can grind through games in which he just didn't have his best stuff. Vancouver's Jace Bohrofen had been getting walks and making good contact but had not displayed home run power until this week when he hit two. Ryan McCarty has been delivering clutch hits for the Canadians and is seen as a guy with a big heart who is easy to root for. Japanese-Brazilian Raphael Ohashi has almost been perfect out of the bullpen, starting the season with 15 consecutive scoreless innings against five different Northwest League teams. Ohashi will be given a start in game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer. Spring is officially here, and that means the return of baseball to Hartford April 9 as the Yard Goats take on the Bowie Baysox at Dunkin' Park. Looking over Dunkin' Park in Hartford, general manager Mike Abramson tells the CBIA BizCast that he's ready for the first pitch to be thrown. “It's always an exciting time of year,” he said. “You know, in March and April, hope springs eternal, and we are on the cusp of what I hope will be our best year ever.” On this episode of the BizCast, Abramson shares the keys to the Yard Goats success in Hartford both on the field and in the community and discusses how Dunkin' Park became an important piece of the city's redevelopment. https://www.milb.com/hartford

Philip Morris became Altria. Apple Computer became Apple. Radio Shack became The Shack (and then went bankrupt). The New Britain Rock Cats moved to Hartford and became the Yard Goats. Tribune Publishing Co. became Tronc (and then became the Tribune Publishing Co. again). Dunkin’ Donuts became Dunkin’. The Washington Redskins became the Washington Football Team. Last month, Facebook became Meta. And next year, the Cleveland Indians will become the Cleveland Guardians and the Washington Football Team will become… something else. And that’s all just this century, and it’s all just companies and sports teams. Let’s not forget Puff Daddy/P. Diddy/Puffy or Snoop Doggy Dogg/Snoop Lion/Snoop Dogg or John Mellencamp/Johnny Cougar/John Cougar Mellencamp. Or His Royal Badness, The Artist Formerly Known as an Unpronounceable and Untypable Symbol. Or, just, David Bowie. Or, just, Madonna. Sometimes a logo gets old or an identity gets stale or a color scheme gets out of date. Sometimes a company or a sports team needs to put its past behind it. Sometimes people go to a doughnut shop mostly for coffee. Sometimes a computer company mostly sells iPods and iPhones and iPads. Sometimes rebranding is the only solution. Or a terrible mistake. Or even just an interesting challenge. This hour: rebranding, from Google to Kanye to, yes, The Colin McEnroe Show. Dave Stevens, Dan Lovallo MLB is floating the idea of changing its playoff format and I look back at an interview I did over the summer with Dave Stevens. Those are among the topics I explore in my latest podcast. My interview with Stevens begins at the 11:31 mark of the podcast. MLB has not officially announced any format change, and any change would have to be approved by the Players' Association, but that didn't stop me from offering an opinion. And you will note I point out this plan is not as drastic as some might suggest. I just hope if it comes to pass, baseball makes another change as well, as I point out in the podcast. (How's that for a tease?) I have interviewed Stevens before, but the occasion of this interview was before a Hartford Yard Goats game this summer at Dunkin' Donuts Park. The Yard Goats were hosting their annual Disability Dream and Do Baseball Camp the next day and Stevens was going to be among the instructors. If you go to his website, which I link to in the first paragraph, you can read more about his story. Stevens was born with no legs, but that did not stop him from realizing his dreams, even playing a game with a professional baseball club. Stevens went on to a 20-year career at ESPN where he worked as a Coverage Editor and Assignment Desk Manager. He also covered sports for a Minneapolis TV station. During his illustrious career, he has won 7 National Sports Emmys. He has covered Super Bowls, the World Series, NCAA Final Fours and so much more. It seems whenever there is a major sporting event, Stevens is on the scene with great interviews and an enthusiasm and energy that know no bounds. As always, thanks for your support and I hope you enjoy the podcast.

Before there was the World Champion Washington Nationals, there was the Montreal Expos. This past summer, while broadcasting games for the Hartford Yard Goats, I caught up with two former teammates on the Expos, Lee Stevens and Mike Mordecai. At the time, Stevens was the hitting instructor for the Yard Goats and Mordecai was the manager of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. The two not only recalled their time as teammates of the Expos but speculated on a major league baseball franchise returning to Montreal. An effort is underway to bring a team back to that city, with MLB even giving the green light to a franchise - in this case Tampa Bay - splitting its home season between Tampa Bay and Montreal. Although logistically, such a duel franchise could be a nightmare, Tampa Bay owner Stuart Sternberg is not ruling out such a move.
The Professors Quizzes Adam Davis of Hartford CT in a game against Georges Lefevre of Tampa FL (Ogden Yard Goats vs St. Pete Science). The Lecture was on Hazelnuts, the players chosen categories were NBA superlatives and Science. Plus 7 others.
As I write this, the Washington Nationals are one win away from their first trip to the World Series. The Nats, who stunned the Dodgers last week in the NLDS, are now putting the Cardinals in a stupor with their pitching. Viewing this dominant performance, I cannot help but think about Washington's Connecticut connection. Remember, Washington was 19-31 in May and fired their pitching coach, replacing him with Paul Menhart. The Nats pitching has been among the elite, since Menhart became pitching coach. He grew up in Mystic, CT and attended Fitch High School. Then there is NLCS game three winning pitcher Stephen Strasburg. He spent one summer in Torrington, as a pitcher with the Torrington Twisters, then a member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. And let us not forget Jack McKeon, a baseball legend. McKeon will turn 89 on Nov. 23 and he is still going strong, as an adviser to Nationals' GM Mike Rizzo. He has been a manager, executive and adviser and among his achievements is winning the World Series with the Florida Marlins in 2003 and managing George Brett. I touch on those two topics, when I interviewed Jack for a Hartford Yard Goats pregame show and am now presenting the interview on the podcast. McKeon was in Hartford in May, when the Nationals AA affiliate, the Harrisburg Senators played the Yard Goats. Enjoy!

L-R: Chuck Kaiton, Jeff Dooley, Dan Lovallo Legendary NHL play-by-play broadcaster Chuck Kaiton returned to Hartford recently, as part of the Hartford Yard Goats "Whalers Alumni Weekend." For the last three seasons, the Yard Goats have paid homage to the Whalers, inviting former players and Kaiton to the city for the weekend. It's not all fun and games either, as the group pays visits to hospitals and schools. Chuck sat down with me for my "The Baseball Beat" podcast, to reminisce about his days in Hartford as the "Voice of the Whalers." We also discussed other aspects of his career, including broadcasting games for the Carolina Hurricanes and what may be in his future. While visiting Dunkin' Donuts Park, Chuck sat in on the radio broadcast with the "Voice of the Yard Goats," Jeff Dooley and me.
On Saturday, the Hartford Athletic soccer team played its first home game at Dillon Stadium. Are You Ready For Some Stupidity? Today's topics include: Don't worry, the stupidity has nothing to do with the border wall or Russia. It is however, from a college campus and a sports team out of Hartford, CT...; next, Neetu Chandak (reporter for The Daily Caller) joins the show to discuss the first example of stupidity coming out of Yale's college campus. A couple of female college students are suing a fraternity because what happened to them at some of the parties they attended. Now, they are wanting to be allowed to join the fraternity, among a long list of other demands; and finally, Alex Berezow (vice president of scientific affairs at the American Council on Science and Health) is here to discuss a story out of Hartford, where a Double-A baseball team - the Yard Goats - are banning the sale of peanuts in their stadium. Berezow gives us his expert opinion on the seriousness of peanut allergies and if this type of drastic action is warranted.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This podcast is a little different than the rest. The mics were setup in the brewery while drinking beer and doing tastings. With the team recently completing their 2nd season at Dunkin Donuts Park, we talk about the team's move from New Britain to Hartford, the impact the team and stadium and have had on the community, and we find out if Tim prefers the beer bats or the glazed and grazed burger. We heard last week that sometimes our episodes get a little bit long and unwieldy, and so with that, we somehow managed to put together one of our longest episodes ever this week and apologize profusely for it. But there's just so much to talk about! The Major League Baseball season enters the second half tonight...although really, it entered the second half a couple of weeks ago. With the All-Star Game being pushed back, there are now just 11 days between the start of play after the break to the trade deadline. Will the Rockies be buyers or sellers? That's a topic to discuss. And discuss it, we shall! Anthony is gone for the next few weeks, so Tyler flies solo on Episode 142 with a trio of guests. The PDP begins a trip through the Rockies farm system by chatting with Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes radio voice Josh Suchon (beginning at the 6:24 mark). Josh covers Albuquerque's roster in transition this year, Jon Gray's brief return to the PCL, Ryan McMahon's recent resurgence and more. Then it's off to Double-A Hartford (47:14) where Yard Goats radio voice Jeff Dooley discusses Brendan Rodgers's terrific season, Hartford's young manager Warren Schaeffer, and some names to look out for that you may not yet know about in the systemFinally, Episode 142 heads to Phoenix (1:04:50) where we find Friend of the PDP™ and all-around good guy Mike Ferrin of MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM as well as pre- and postgame host duties for the D-backs. Mike gives us the lay of the land around the National League West after the Dodgers acquired Manny Machado as well as giving us a preview of this week's big Rockies-Diamondbacks clash in the desert. All that and more on the 142nd episode of the Purple Dinosaur Podcast. Spear it with a stick and roast it over a campfire!

Over two years ago, Michael Abramson came on the podcast (Ep. 520) to discuss how The Hartford Yard Goats would open up the 2016 season in their new ballpark. Almost 300 episodes and two years later, Abramson returns to the podcast to discuss why 2017, not 2016, was the opening year at home for The Hartford Yard Goats. In a story that covered the gamit from construction delays, FBI investigations and continual check-ins with sponsors, Abramson chats about how The Yard Goats kept everything focused and showed MiLB as well as the City of Hartford how well the franchise could succeed under pressure. Yard Goats manager Jerry Weinstein is a man of many little self-contradictory terms. Words like "simplexity." Or this one he has for a pitch that could be a strike or a ball: a... "striball." Moving a minor league baseball team 13 miles from one location to another is not supposed to be a heavy-lifting task, yet when the Hartford Yard Goats announced their intentions to move from New Britain to downtown Hartford in 2014, it became an issue with the locals. Senior Vice President Michael Abramson discusses the intangibles with the move, including creating a name change from the Rock Cats to Yard Goats, and all of the controversy that became of the switch. Abramson talks about the increased visibility of the Hartford Yard Goat brand in the downtown area, as well as some of the ways in which the team is expanding its reach in local municipality.
In the "YARD GOATS!" edition, Jeffrey and Chris actually recorded before the announcement of YARD GOATS, so this podcast is mostly full of sad things (unless you are a Swedish soccer fan). We touch on Zack Wheeler's torn UCL, discuss our most gut-punching moments as a Mets fan, and consider Wilmer Flores, Mets Opening Day shortstop (again). There are some happy things, we suppose. David Wright hit a big dong, Lucas Duda will probably be good again, and Ronny is an Amazin' Avenue reader apparently (and has some damn stylish glasses). Oh, and definitely stick around for a discussion of Aderlin Rodriguez batting practice laser shows. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
