Katie Woods, Tournament Director - NBC World Series | Marketing Director - Wichita Sports Commission Minor League Baseball (MiLB) Named league's Woman Executive of the Year in 2019 (California League), 2015 & 2013 (Northwest League) Creative & passionate sports executive with more than a decade of leadership experience in Minor League Baseball. Specializing in business operations, fan experience, digital marketing, corporate partnerships, communications, and project management for successful franchises across the country. Top 4 Takeaways: It's important for leaders (both men and women) to elevate their staff and put them in positions to grow and be successful. Katie's GM in Everett gave her opportunities to network and grow - Winter Meetings, Promo Seminar, community connections, sales trainings etc., and also advocated for her when she was pregnant with her first daughter at a team without an existing maternity leave policy. Use this as an example of how to advocate for staff when you are in a leadership position. Be prepared for a challenge. Decisions about life and career, and being prepared for things to always be changing, even when you're settled into what you think is your 'dream job'. It's not personal. Step back and see the other person's perspective is a valuable skill, versus taking a lack of response/a negative response/a lack of support as a personal slight. Networking and asking for help and expertise. Some of the best connections and friends in the industry have been from essentially cold calling them because they are doing something great. Have the desire to want to learn from them. Be curious. Quote: “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! In addition to leading the 1972 World Series champion A's in home runs, Mike played for arguably the greatest hitter of all-time, Ted Williams…Using what he learned from his career and from Ted Williams, Mike built a system to identify and fix swing faults. Mike received the only letter of recommendation for hitting instruction Ted Williams ever gave out…After working closely with Mike to learn the craft of teaching hitting, Epstein Hitting is now led by Jake Epstein…Jake has perfected the use of video analysis to create a plan to maximize a player's swing. In addition to slow-motion video analysis, Jake has built a library of drills that he uses to address the unique needs of individual players. Every once in a while, a Moonlighter just falls into your lap. Matt Buschmann connected to the podcast on Twitter, and, as it turns out, he was just the kind of story we are looking for. Matt Buschmann is a 10-year minor league baseball veteran who made three appearances in the Majors. When his playing days were done, he became the bullpen coach for the Toronto Blue Jays. Buschmann has the kind of story diehard baseball fan loves to hear, and he came to the right place to tell it. Matt Buschmann grew up in Missouri but headed east to play his college ball for Vanderbilt. Vandy is a premier SEC baseball program, and Buschmann was part of two SEC tournament runs in the early 2000s. After being drafted in the 15th round of the 2006 draft by the Padres, Buschmann had a lot of early success, earning various all-star awards in the California League and Texas League. Over the next several years, Buschmann moved between the upper levels of minor league ball and across organizations playing for the Padres, Rays, Athletics, Orioles, and Reds, before landing with the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was there that he finally earned his shot. In April of 2016, Matt Buschmann was called up by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He made three appearances, throwing 4.1 innings, giving up one earned run, and recording three strikeouts. After his stint in the bigs, he was sent back down to Triple-A. He was signed by the Blue Jays for the 2017 season but made no appearances. When his playing days were done, Matt Buschmann decided to stay in the game but in a new role. He spent a year with the Giants working in player development before returning to the Blue Jays in 2018. He has been serving as the bullpen coach for Toronto for the last few seasons. This interview covers everything about Matt Buschmann's career as a player and coach. From his time at Vandy to his new role as a big league coach, Buschmann has seen just about everything on the diamond.

Jesse here… and, yes, I am an idiot. In fact, I tweeted this just yesterday…It turns out, there was an issue with the storage on our Google Drive, namely that I needed to delete previous podcast files. Again, I'm an idiot.I'm not an idiot for the referenced update to the deGrom stat not happening yet. That's more a result of being under the weather and that we're gonna have pieces from Roger Cormier and Colleen Sullivan about Jacob deGrom's return, too… and today happens to be the trade deadline. So, we'll get to that, but here's some 1974 Topp from Project ShaqBox to tide you over, and Craig's piece from 2016 that I came across when researching Tim Johnson. The card backs, of course, are also golden, and in this case, relevant. Tim Johnson was born in 1939… wait a minute. Okay, Topps also had some idiots on hand, because Johnson was born in 1949, and thus an 18-year-old when he went to spring training in 1968, preparing to lead California League shortstops with 69 DPs. He should've used that to motivate his players instead of fake Vietnam stories. Would've been nice. But, what do you expect from a seasonal motorcycle salesman, really?Gorman enjoys billiards. Also, Craig is correct, and the demonym for Columbus is, indeed, Columbusite, even if it does sound like a disease or a kind of parasite. And we will soon have an episode of The ELAINE Show with the fantastic Claire de Lune to talk about the Knicks. It's not like they're gonna make sense anytime soon. And even more to come in this latest podcast series... enjoy! This is a public episode. However, a combination of the cancellation of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Major League Baseball's realignment of the minor leagues for 2021, resulted in the team changing to Double-A as affiliates of the Twins without having played a Triple-A game.Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Wind Surge were scheduled to begin their inaugural season on the road playing against the Round Rock Express on April 8, 2020, and to play their first home game on April 14 against the Memphis Redbirds. Initially postponed due to the pandemic, the season was ultimately cancelled on June 30. That summer, owner Lou Schwechheimer also passed awayIn 2021, the team dropped to the Double-A classification without having played a Triple-A game due to Major League Baseball's realignment of the minor leagues after the 2020 season. Instead of being a Miami Marlins affiliate, the Wind Surge became affiliated with the Minnesota Twins. The Wind Surge went on to win the Northern Division title by finishing the 2021 season in first place with a 69–51 record. They qualified for the championship playoffs by possessing the league's best record. In the best-of-five series, they were defeated by the second-place Northwest Arkansas Naturals, 3–2. Following the 2020, California is set to redraw its legislative maps and for the first time in our state's history, we are set to lose a congressional seat. What does this mean for Humboldt? Guest Sam Sukaton of the California League of Conservation Voters joins Gang Green to discuss the California Citizens Redistricting Commission and how environmental voters can better harness power to affect change. While environmental and climate justice advocates have been building a policy agenda for years, we currently do not have the political power in California to act on these solutions at the rate and scale required. The 2021 redistricting process is a unique moment to make key structural change: not only for the next legislative session, but for this final decade leading to the 2030 climate deadline.California's Constitution requires that redistricting preserve “communities of interest”—those economic or cultural ties that bind communities together—to the maximum extent possible. The redistricting process begins by soliciting input from the public about what forms their community of interest. Unique public comments are very important to the process. This week we sit down with Stuart Woolf, the President and CEO of Los Gatos Tomatoes, one of the largest tomato processors in the world. Stuart gives us an inside view into the science, technology, and logistical genius that enabled 3x higher yields in the processing tomato industry over the last 50 years, all while reducing labor requirements to a fraction of what they once were. We cover everything from decades of tomato seed breeding efforts to the 120 day, 24/7 harvesting sprint-marathon that results in 325 million lbs of tomato paste every year. If ever there was a 1 hour crash course on processing tomatoes, this may very well be it. Stuart is also the President and CEO of Woolf farming and has served as Chairman of the California League of Food Processors, the Almond Board of California, and of the UC President’s Commission of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Stuart also currently serves on the board of the California Chamber of Commerce, the Western Growers Association, and Marone Bio Innovation. https://www.woolffarming.com/ http://www.losgatostomato.com/

Jesse Goldberg-Strassler and Kevin Reichard are joined by Phil Elson, Voice of Arkansas Razorbacks baseball, to discuss the state of college baseball in this week’s Ballpark Digest Broadcaster Chat.Elson began his career in Minor League Baseball and worked a variety of circuits (Eastern League, Pioneer League, Sally League, California League) before ending up as the Voice of the Texas League’s Arkansas Travelers. As Voice of the Razorbacks, Elson has seen how the sport has matured in the cutting-edge SEC, between upgraded facilities and the extensive use of technology to guide performance. In fact, he argues college baseball has become the true hotbed of baseball innovation, finding the sweet spot between pitching and hitting. You don’t see the lightning bats anymore, and the actual baseball has been refined. It’s a balance MLB and MiLB are striving to create, and it already exists in college baseball. In addition, during his seven years with the ‘Backs, facilities have improved every year, both in Arkansas and the rest of the SEC, and college facilities are now augmented with spacious training facilities and state-of-the-art performance centers. Even the newest iterations of synthetic turf seem to work well.A discussion of The Baseball Thesaurus term turns into a broader discussion of the tone of the game and whether too many violent terms are employed during the course of a game.Jesse Goldberg-Strassler is the Voice of the Lansing Lugnuts and the author of The Baseball Thesaurus and The Football Thesaurus from August Publications. Kevin Reichard is publisher at August Publications and Ballpark Digest.

With the next U.S. election just 15 months away, advocates of action on climate change are gearing up with fresh plans to address the issue and bring them to the attention of the American electorate. Among the biggest such efforts is the Beyond Carbon campaign launched recently by Bloomberg Philanthropies, the charitable-giving arm of former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. In this edition of Columbia Energy Exchange, host Bill Loveless talks to Carl Pope, the senior climate advisor to Michael Bloomberg who has played a major role in developing the strategy behind the Beyond Carbon campaign. Bloomberg Philanthropies has put $500 million behind the campaign, which it calls the largest ever effort in the U.S. to fight climate change. Carl is well known in environmental circles, having led Sierra Club for more than 30 years before stepping down in 2010. He is also a founder of the BlueGreen Alliance and has served on the boards of the California League of Conservation Voters and the National Clean Air Coalition. He’s written three books as well, including one in 2017 with Michael Bloomberg called “Climate of Hope: How Cities, Businesses and Citizens Can Save the Planet.” Bill reached Carl by phone the other day at his office in San Francisco, where he is a Principal Advisor at Inside Straight Strategies. Among the topics they discuss are the goals of the Beyond Carbon campaign and why Bloomberg and Pope are now targeting natural gas, as well as other fossil fuels, for elimination in order to put the U.S. on a path to a 100% clean-energy economy. Bill probes Carl, too, regarding the timing of Beyond Carbon ahead of the 2020 elections, his views on renewable energy and nuclear energy, whether putting a price on carbon makes sense, and how the media is covering climate change. Of course, with another round of debates for Democratic candidates for president about to take place, Bill also gets Carl's take on their positions on energy and climate issues.
