The Genesis eleven story of the tower of Babel is one we need to pay attention to in our social media saturated world. In his book, This World is Not My Home, Mark Johnston writes that man's motive behind the vast tower of Babel efforts was, as we read in Genesis eleven four, “to make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” Johnston continues, “the Babel instinct in the human psyche has lingered on through the entire history of our race. From man's attempts to literally build a name for himself by constructing great works of architectural genius, to his efforts to establish kingdoms and empires, human beings have tried to secure themselves in their world through all manner of tangible means. We try to build our own little worlds without God through our careers, achievements, families, and other things in the hope they will provide the security and sense of identity we crave.” Parents, teach your kids to find their identity in Jesus Christ alone.
Getting Weird, with Ashley Good Episode 069 - It's Not My Home, Right Now In an uncharacteristically serious and dare I say *heart felt* episode, I get real about why I originally moved to Victoria and why I left. And because Trudeau stepped down and some of Canada's proposed online censorship laws are on hold, I get real about the issues with the BC government regarding fentanyl, being de-personed by the film community during the pandemic, and bike lanes. I also discuss what makes a place a place, and the book Psychogeography by Merlin Coverly. Lots of reminiscing. Several stories involve mice, living and dead. Oh Victoria. *** Song: Trust Me - Performed by AI, Written by Ashley Good *** YouTube Channel: www.youtube.com/@ashleyegood

This week, author Lorrie Moore is on the show. Lorrie is one of the most celebrated living writers in the United States, drawing comparisons with Chekhov and Alice Munro. And she just released her novel, I Am Homeless if This is Not My Home. It's her first in 14 years, and it is hard to describe. Let's call it a magical realist love story, in which a man takes a road trip with the corpse of his dead ex-lover. Lorrie talks to Lilah about her writing process, and how she treads the line between hilarious and devastating.-------We love hearing from you! You can email us at ftweekendpodcast@ft.com. Dark humour - do you love it or hate it? Do you find it cathartic or macho? Can humour ever be too dark, and is it a useful political tool? This month our guest is the one and only Lorrie Moore, who joined us to talk about her latest novel, I Am Homeless if This is Not My Home, a story about grief and ghosts and history that is equally funny as it is philosophical. It follows Finn, who in 2016 is visiting his dying brother in a hospice in New York. Finn's stay is interrupted by the news that his ex-girlfriend Lily, who worked as a therapy clown, has killed herself, which sets off a road trip with her talking corpse. All this is punctuated by letters from a boarding house proprietor in the post-Civil War American South, about a mysterious lodger that has come to stay… Tune in for all of this, plus the usual recommendations. This World Is Not My Home We long for the end of the current pandemic and the opportunity to gather freely with old friends face-to-face. For now, our hosts make do with an online meeting with pastor, church planter, and author Mark Johnston. Mark has curated a series of his articles posted at PlaceForTruth.org into a compelling guidebook for pilgrims on the way entitled This World is Not My Home. Johnston reminds Christians of the nature of mankind's redemption from Adam's fall in Eden to its consummation in heaven and how that truth should give shape to living Christ-glorifying lives as “resident aliens” in this world. We have several copies of This World is Not My Home to give away. Register to win one! The books are a gift from the Banner of Truth Trust.
Life in Christ is still life on earth. And that means hardship — sometimes beyond what we think ourselves capable of bearing. And in that moment, we can lean into God or run away from God. My guests this week have chosen the former, and we are all the richer for it. Matt Bassford, well-known hymnist, is the preacher for the Jackson Heights church of Christ in Columbia, Tennessee. Keith Stonehart preaches for the Fultondale church of Christ in Fultondale Alabama. Their perspective on suffering will inspire you to praise God for His blessings and commit to never taking them for granted. Hal Hammons is the preacher for the Lakewoods Drive church of Christ in Georgetown, Texas. He is the host of the Citizen of Heaven podcast. You are encouraged to seek him and the Lakewoods Drive church through Facebook and other social media. Lakewoods Drive is an autonomous group of Christians dedicated to praising God, teaching the gospel to all who will hear, training Christians in righteousness, and serving our God and one another faithfully. We believe the Bible is God's word, that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, that heaven is our home, and that we have work to do here while we wait. Regular topics of discussion and conversation include: Christians, Jesus, obedience, faith, grace, baptism, New Testament, Old Testament, authority, gospel, fellowship, justice, mercy, faithfulness, forgiveness, Twenty Pages a Week, Bible reading, heaven, hell, virtues, character, denominations, submission, service, character, COVID-19, assembly, Lord's Supper, online, social media, YouTube, Facebook. key words, suffering, suffer, pain, hardship, Matt Bassford, Matthew Bassford, Keith Stonehart, adversity, hymns, This World is Not My Home, Job, rest, abuse, sexual abuse, ALS, disease, illness, unfair,
We as Christians need to realize that this world is not our home. We are just passing through. Our mission on earth is to live a more righteous life so that God would be glorified. In doing this we will "silence the ignorant talk of foolish people." We need to remember that our only hope is Jesus. Life will be difficult at times but we need to realize that Jesus will give us the strength to make it through. Our suffering is not in vain in the Lord. The struggle is worth it.
