The royal family were out in force at Sandringham on Christmas Day on a joyful outing to church, with Mia Tindall and the Wales children stealing the show. Pod Save the King host Ann Gripper is joined by Daily Mirror royal editor Russell Myers to look back on the festive season's royal highlights. They reflect on King Charles' powerful Christmas message, royal TV highlights and what the family's New Year messages told us about the Firm. Plus they get their teeth into the discussion of the royal family's ‘main' role and whether Empire has any place in Britain's honours system today. And they look further afield with the surprise abdication of Denmark's Queen Margrethe. Wishing our listeners all the best for 2024. * Send us your thoughts on the show @podsave on Instagram. Learn how to talk about hunting with non-hunters by showing patience and respect while still getting your opinions across. Are you stressed thinking of how to get home for Christmas or how to host that holiday? Consider doing a Holiday away at a central location, making Christmas a gift trip. This is Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt with the radio show The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in the Outdoors & Western Lifestyle! Episode 161 Details NEWS REAL CHRISTMAS TREES MAY HAVE INSECTS The Department of Agriculture is advising checking the trunk, branches, and needles for any signs of the lantern fly and reporting any findings immediately to the department. They are requesting that people inspect their real Christmas trees for these invasive insects. The lantern fly can cause significant damage to plants and trees, so it's crucial to inspect your tree before bringing it indoors. BEER SPA BierBath is set to open in Sykesville, Maryland on December 9th. The spa features hot baths infused with hops and barley that are said to provide detoxifying benefits. After relaxing, guests can continue on to enjoy a taproom featuring 30 different beers. UGLY CHRISTMAS TREE TREND The Ugly Christmas Sweater has taken on a whole new look. Ugly Christmas Trees are trending in 2023. According to CBC News, people are adorning their trees with pom poms and feathers while others are opting for a Christmas Cactus or buying an ugly Christmas tree from sites like Amazon that resembles the one in the Charlie Brown cartoon. A 15 inch Redneck Christmas Tree is selling on Amazon for $15. It's nothing more than a toilet plunger with several Evergreen branches and on red ornament. The description reads: “Toilet plunger base with wooden handle makes a great holiday gag. Can be decorated with ornaments or left bare. Decoration only - plunger not designed for actual use. HOW TO TALK HUNTING WITH NON-HUNTERS From time to time we are all challenged with how to go about visiting with people that are not hunters. At times, with both sides of the fence passionate about their feelings, a heated discussion can result. But it does not have to. When sharing why you hunt with a non-hunter it is important to have patience and respect. Tigger & BEC often use the discussion as a reason to talk about wildlife conservation. How there is importance to find balance in nature. Cities are growing meaning that areas for wildlife to roam are smaller and smaller. If populations of wildlife are not managed then circumstances of disease can result. Having a calm conversation and allowing both sides to share their feelings without judgment goes a long way. Make the discussion a safe place to share, and then use it as a moment to educate. Practice patience and respect will go a long way and are more likely to have a positive conversation. HOLIDAY LOCATION & GIFT TURNED INTO A TRIP Dollars are tight this time of year for everyone plus there is the stress too of hosting or arranging travel to have everyone home in time. Instead of gifts, book a Christmas getaway that is not as far away for everyone! Consider looking at the map and picking a central location for all to travel to that might be easier than everyone coming “Home”. For example, say Mom & Dad live in North Dakota but members of your family now live in places like Nebraska. Meet in the middle, and turn the holiday into a memorable trip! A location for that might be the Black Hills in South Dakota. Search an area on the map that is between everyone, then search that area for a vacation home rental. There are places like AirBnB or VRBO as well as an assortment of other reputable vacation home rental places that will offer great alternatives. Eliminate the stress of cleaning and preparing your home, and treat everyone to an affordable getaway that is the gift. Spend time as a family checking out hiking trails, shopping in quaint towns and enjoy exploring the area together! The meaning and significance of Christmas are easily muted or lost amidst the busyness and consumerism of the season. By the time Christmas morning arrives, we're tired and unfocused and left to feel guilty that maybe we didn't give Jesus His proper place during the holidays. So how can we slow down the Christmas season and cultivate homes where “Jesus is the reason for the season” is not merely a Christian cliche? In this episode, Brett and Erin offer one powerful idea for your family.

Is it possible that all the lacquer smothered on the Christmas story has taken the bite out of it? Has Jesus been reduced to a warm, fuzzy feeling and excuse to shop and eat? Hebrews is written to reclaim the true greatness of Jesus. Jesus is not a baby we talk about during the holidays to conjure up good vibes. Jesus is the supreme prophet, the owner of all things, and the exact imprint of God's being. He is not a prophet, he is THE PROPHET. We begin our advent series by reminding ourselves that Jesus came as the Prophet of Peace, in an effort to remind ourselves that Christmas declares that Jesus is supreme over all. NOTE: There was minor glitch toward the end of the sermon where point 3 (Make Christmas about Jesus) is briefly clipped. We apologize for the inconvenience.
It's the holidays! In any given year, the season between Thanksgiving and New Year's can be just as stressful as it is joyful, and those feelings are only compounded when a loved one is going through a hard time. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to bring cheer to your friends and family. Aimee and her Mom Fran Kandrac share easy, thoughtful ways to make the holidays a little brighter for those having a tough year. Episode Highlights Send a care package. Care packages are one of Fran's favorite ways to show someone she's thinking about them. Whether mailed or dropped off in person, a care package an opportunity to give your friend items that may help or delight them. Here are some items you may want to include: Seasonal cards and markers Tea bags and cookies Essential food and grocery items Hershey's kisses A joke book Help with outdoor work. The holidays come at the time of year when fall gives way to winter, which can mean piles of leaves in the yard. Consider rounding up a group of friends to rake the yard and clear the gutters. Bonus: You can have hot cider on hand to make the activity extra merry. You can also ask your friend if you can decorate their house for the holidays or help take down existing decorations. However, make sure to ask your friend first whether it's okay to decorate and if they have any style guidelines. “No matter what you're doing … ask your friend what they want, and then respect what they tell you,” Fran said. Tell your friend you're thinking of them. On the day of a holiday, you may be hesitant to text or call your friend because you don't want to interrupt. But reaching out to a friend on a holiday can be a great way to bring a little cheer. “If you know they're probably not having a good day, you can simply say, ‘I'm thinking about you today,'” Fran said. If your friend is lonely, the interruption may be more than welcome. However, don't expect your friend to be able to talk or respond right away. Make Christmas presents with the kids. If your friend has kids and celebrates Christmas, offer to watch the kids for an afternoon and help them make and wrap presents for the family. You can also bake and decorate cookies or do Christmas-themed crafts. As a bonus, you'll also be giving your friend an added gift of an afternoon to themselves. “It allows your friend time to take a nap, clean the house, or binge watch a couple of TV shows,” Fran said. Host a cookie exchange. The holidays aren't complete without baked goods, and one easy way to bring some cheer is with cookies. Consider hosting a cookie exchange in which about a dozen friends each bring a few dozen cookies to swap. If your friend doesn't have the time or energy to bring cookies, they can still come and have a variety of cookies to take home. Remember: Cookies don't have to be homemade. Store-bought cookies are just as festive, and some people prefer them. “Store-bought stuff is really good, and sometimes a lot of people prefer store bought,” Fran said. “There's nothing wrong with that, and they can look beautiful on a big platter or several small platters.” Resources + Links Aimee Kandrac: Website, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn WhatFriendsDo: Website, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn About Aimee and WhatFriendsDo Aimee Kandrac is a speaker, consultant, and the co-founder and CEO of WhatFriendsDo.
