The Ghent Altarpiece is an extensive and highly detailed polyptych or multi-paneled altarpiece, that was created by the Flemish artist Jan van Eyck and his brother Hubert van Eyck in the early 15th century. The altarpiece is considered to be one of the most important works of art from the Northern Renaissance. In the late nineteenth century, the Berlin Museum, which then owned part of the paintings belonging to the Ghent Altarpiece, separated the painted fronts of these panels from their backs, which were also painted, by sawing them apart. This harsh measure was intended to facilitate the exhibition of the panels and their inspection by an art-loving public. But it also served to obscure the fact that the panels were created as ecclesiastical objects for display in a church, and to stress their character simply as art.

The adoration of the mystic lamb, also known as Ghent Altarpiece, was begun in the mid-1420 and completed before 1432 by Jan van Eyck and his brother Hubert. Jan van Eyck was a Flemish painter who was one of the founders of Early Netherlandish painting, the medium that Jan van used was oil and oak wood to make this painting. There is no convincing information to determine artistic attribution. The Ghent Altarpiece is a large and complex 15th-century polyptych altarpiece in Saint Bavo's Cathedral chapel in Belgium, but it was moved for security reasons to the main cathedral chapel, where it is today. The altarpiece is considered a masterpiece of European art and one of the world's treasures. The Altarpiece has been the victim of 13 crimes since its installation, and seven thefts. Nearly 600 years old, the panels have been threatened by theft, war damage, peace settlements, outbreaks of iconoclasm , and have suffered fire damage. The idealization of traditional medieval art gives way to realistic representations of nature and humanity.

Today, we will discuss the Ghent Altarpiece, which Jan Van Eyck and Hubert Van Eyck painted. They made this painting during the Northern Renaissance period, and the theme is based on Christianity. Ghent Altarpiece's meaning is the Biblical story of Jesus Christ and his sacrifice. You can see the significance of Christ's sacrifice when they show it with a lamb pouring blood into a chalice. This lamb is a depiction of Christ's sacrifice. In this painting, you can see how the lamb is an essential reference to Christ because next to the altar are angels holding a cross. The angels and cross depict his crucifixion, implying that the lamb in the image is about to get crucified. The Van Eyck brothers used oil paint for the Ghent Altarpiece to try and make the finest of details on this piece of work. For those who don't know what an altarpiece is, it is a work of art that decorated the space above and behind the altar in a Christian church. That is why the Ghent Altarpiece is in St. John the Baptist, now the Cathedral of St. Bavo.

“Exploration of America Before Columbus” – David Brody says numerous artifacts and sites around New England offer evidence of exploration of North America before Columbus. Specifically, the artifacts seem to confirm the legend of a group of Scottish explorers, with ties to the outlawed Knights Templar, island-hopping their way across the North Atlantic in the late 1300s. Who were they, and why did they come? Well, that's where the fun begins.“Templars, Nazis and the Holy Grail”–The Ghent Altarpiece painting is the most stolen piece of artwork in world history. During World War II, the Nazis pilfered it, believing that the painting's Knights Templar symbology and iconography—in particular, secret Templar seals used by the Order during medieval times—were encrypted clues leading to the Holy Grail and other lost Templar treasures. Why did the Templars choose the enigmatic symbols depicted on the seals? And do the answers help lead us to the lost Templar treasure“Freemasons and the Lost Continent of Atlantis”—Many commentators have speculated that the United States is Freemasonry's “New Atlantis.” Is that so? To answer the question, we first need to determine whether “Old Atlantis” really existed. Compelling evidence indicates that some kind of advanced civilization thrived—and then was lost—approximately 12,000 years ago.

Many historical novels explore the highways and byways of Tudor England, especially the marital troubles of Henry VIII, which makes it all the more pleasant when an author approaches that much-visited time and place with a fresh eye. In her The Cross and the Crown series–which currently consists of The Altarpiece, City of Ladies, and The King’s Sisters—Sarah Kennedy looks at Henry’s roller-coaster search for marital happiness and male progeny from the viewpoint of a young nun cast out of her convent and flung into a strange interim state where she can neither practice her religion nor marry without the express permission of the king. We meet Catherine Havens in 1535. King Henry has recently declared the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and the local gentry sees a chance to increase its landholdings at the expense of Catherine’s convent–a development that her abbess in no way supports but cannot prevent. When the convent chapel’s large and valuable altarpiece goes missing, the questions raised by the theft and the attempts to retrieve it sweep Catherine into a secular world that her sheltered background has not prepared her to handle. The situation only deepens in future books, as the king’s constantly shifting moods, loves, alliances, and attitudes toward religion keep his realm in equally constant turmoil–the only certainty that a misstep will lead to torture and execution. In this atmosphere, no one is safe. Yet Catherine and the other “king’s sisters,” a group that includes his divorced wife Anne of Cleves, strive to care for his children while remaining true to their consciences. That Catherine is also a gifted physician (although a woman cannot bear that title, and the line between medicine and witchcraft at times wears disturbingly thin) offers her both a means of support and a certain protection amid the many dangers that beset even secondary affiliates of the royal court. The King’s Sisters (Knox Robinson Publishing, 2015) opens a window on a world in which the fate of Anne Boleyn is but one reminder of King Henry’s caprice. Learn more about your ad choices. "The Altarpiece of Ciudad Rodrigo" is the centerpiece of the UAMA’s Samuel H. Kress Collection, which consists of more than 60 European paintings, sculptures and decorative objects dating from the 14th through the 19th centuries. In addition to the Altarpiece, the Kress holdings include paintings by Vittore Carpaccio, Jusepe de Ribera, Domenico Tintoretto, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Horace Vernet, Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun and many others. The technical analysis of the paintings, under the direction of Claire Barry, chief conservator for the Kimbell Art Museum, allowed scholars to look beneath the painted layers and to see the artists’ preparatory underdrawings. Lotto was a restless traveller who absorbed many influences but left many letters and records. Here is a miraculous story told in simple and direct human terms. Gabriel announces to the Virgin ‘You shall conceive and bear a son and you shall give him the name Jesus’. Mary turns away from her reading of Isaiah 7:14, which begins ‘A young woman who is pregnant will have a son’. The light of the Christian faith fills the space which is her bed-chamber. It would have been against the decorum of the times to show Mary in fear and the cat amplifies this. The lily is a symbol of the Virgin. There is a Venetian quality to the light and colour of this altar-piece and a Northern-European attention to detail.
