This is the second episode in our three-part “Back to Basics” series. We're talking about what “Mission 1:8” is and why it is so central to our ministry at First Baptist Dallas. In this episode, Ben, Nate, and Andrew discuss our 2025-2026 ministry plan, One Desire—including what biblical passages inspired this idea and how God has been working over the last two years.

Patti Smith, “the Godmother of Punk,” has lived a wild life and accumulated so much wisdom in the process. In the 1960s and '70s, Smith was a fixture of the New York City creative scene — hanging out with the likes of Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Allen Ginsberg and Robert Mapplethorpe. Merging her own poetry with an ace backing band, she became a global rock star. Then she gave it up, moved to Michigan, raised a family, and remade herself into a best-selling author. Her stunning memoir “Just Kids” won the National Book Award and is one of the books that I've kept returning to, again and again. There is clearly something unusual about Smith. People who know her have described her as “shamanistic.” But even for those of us who will never become rock stars, there's something inspiring — and oddly relatable — in how she thinks about life. So I was excited to have the opportunity to sit down with her and learn more.Smith is out with a new memoir, “Bread of Angels,” and is on tour for the 50th anniversary of her breakthrough album, “Horses.” We talk about that book and that album and so much more: the boundless curiosity that drives her; the books that shaped her; her childhood communion with a snapping turtle; what Andy Warhol was like; what color she thinks the soul is; and a lot more that's hard even to describe. This episode contains strong language.Mentioned:“Pan's Labyrinth” by Guillermo del ToroGrimm's Complete Fairy Tales by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm GrimmBread of Angels by Patti SmithJust Kids by Patti Smith“The Dark Blot” by Gérard de Nerval“Genie” by Arthur Rimbaud“Guernica” by Pablo Picasso“The Last Supper” by Andy WarholBook Recommendations:The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo CollodiFrankenstein by Mary ShelleyThe Poetry of Sylvia Plath Edited by Claire Brennan2666 by Roberto BolañoThoughts? October 26th, 2025 | Seek ONE | Psalm 27:1-8What would it look like for Jesus to become the one thing that drives everything in your life? In this powerful kickoff to our Seek One journey, Pastor Todd Kaunitz invites us to discover what it means to live with a singular pursuit—seeking God's abiding presence above all else.Teaching from Psalm 27:1–8, Pastor Todd unpacks David's declaration that his greatest desire was not for deliverance or comfort, but to dwell in the presence of the Lord. David found both security and satisfaction not in his position or circumstances, but in God Himself. From creation to the new heaven and earth, Scripture tells one consistent story—God's desire to dwell with His people. Through Jesus, that same abiding presence is now available to each of us. Key Takeaways:What it means to live a “Seek One” lifeThe difference between God's omnipresence and His abiding presenceHow God's presence brings true joy, confidence, and peaceWhy generosity and surrender are acts of worshipHow the story of Scripture centers on God's presence with His people“You have said, ‘Seek my face.' My heart says to you, ‘Your face, Lord, do I seek.'”Join us as we begin this two-year pursuit of a life marked by freedom, purpose, and a deep desire for more of God—not just more from Him.Do you know JESUS?: https://www.nblongview.org/do-you-know-jesusNeed PRAYER?: https://www.nblongview.org/praySUPPORT through giving: https://www.nbbctx.org/giving
October 26th, 2025 | Seek ONE | Psalm 27What happens when Jesus becomes the one thing that drives everything in your life? In this message, Pastor Matt Darby continues the Seek 1 journey by unpacking the heart behind “One Desire” from Psalm 27:4—a call to make God's abiding presence our greatest pursuit and deepest longing.Every person was created to seek, to hunger, and to long for something more. But that desire will only ever be satisfied in the presence of God. Pastor Matt reminds us that the story of Scripture—from Eden to eternity—is the story of God drawing near to dwell with His people. Through Jesus and the indwelling Holy Spirit, the manifest presence David longed for is now available to every believer. In this powerful teaching, discover how to make God's presence not just a priority among many—but the priority that orders everything else in your life. Key Takeaways:God's manifest presence is humanity's greatest need and should be our greatest desireThe difference between God's omnipresence and His manifest presenceHow Jesus restored what sin separated—God's presence with His peopleWhy prayer, purity, and priority are the pathways to experiencing His presenceThe Seek 1 challenge: Is Jesus The One Thing That Drives Everything in your life? “One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.”Join Pastor Matt as he invites us to seek not just more from God, but more of God—laying down idols, realigning our desires, and pursuing His presence as our One Desire.Do you know JESUS? https://www.nbgilmer.org/do-you-know-jesusNeed PRAYER? https://www.nbgilmer.org/praySupport through GIVING: https://www.nbbctx.org/giving
Everyone will live forever—either in eternal joy with God or eternal misery apart from Him. Jesus spoke often of hell as a real place of torment, but God's ultimate purpose is to glorify Himself through the everlasting joy of His people. John Piper challenges those who feel called to cross-cultural missions to take their next steps in faith, seek counsel from their local church, and commit to making Christ known among the nations.

The ambition of our lives should be to please our Lord Jesus Christ. But what does that look like? How can make Him our one desire? We'll talk about these questions together, as we walk through the second half of our One Desire Discipleship Guide. Dr. Ben Lovvorn leads us through an exposition of 2 Corinthians 4:16–5:10, focusing especially on 5:9, which is our theme verse for One Desire. We just launched our next two-year ministry plan, Mission 1:8 One Desire! This effort revolves around a core question that we need to ask ourselves… is Jesus Christ the one desire of our hearts? In this episode, we'll talk about what we can learn and apply to our lives from Parable of the Sower, found in Mark 4:1–20. This conversation, led by Dr. Ben Lovvorn, is intended to walk you through the first half of our One Desire Discipleship Guide. The main goal of the Society of Saint Pius X is to preserve the Catholic Faith in its fullness and purity, to teach its truths, and to diffuse its virtues, especially through the Roman Catholic priesthood. Authentic spiritual life, the sacraments, and the traditional liturgy are its primary means of bringing this life of grace to souls. Although the traditional Latin Mass is the most visible and public expression of the work of the Society, we are committed to defending Catholic Tradition in its entirety: all of Catholic doctrine and morals as the Church has always defended them. This will happen the moment you desire one thing. Your challenge has been that you desire more than one thing, and so you are not able to see that all desires are the same. If you choose in darkness, then shadows will enfold everything you perceive. But if you choose in the Light, then they will shine as you shine, and be blessed by your Holy Desire. Passion and desire stand together in your mind and cannot be separated. We will now open to the One Desire that will lead you to the goal you seek - the Peace of God. Nothing else in this world can satisfy you now. You have come too far." - James Twyman, Jeshua Code "I have called you to remember the reason you chose to be born. You have chosen to answer that call, for the song that was planted in your soul is now ringing in your ears." - James Twyman, Jeshua Code "You have been taught to chant the word YES to open the channels of your soul, preparing your heart for the Great Work that lies before us. It doesn't matter what language you use. It is the feeling you generate that creates the opening. There is a sound in Hebrew that essentially means "It is so." This is a more powerful interpretation of the word YES. The sound is Yesh. Say it a few times out loud. Make the sound long and draw it out for at least a few seconds. "V-E-S- H." Chant it over and over, as often as you can. Call to the Christ in You, and it will awaken. Will you believe me when I tell you that the rest will happen on its own? What do you wish to see in the world? Peace? Harmony? Adopt the vision that was given before time began..."- James Twyman, Jeshua Code
If you like recaps of 90's B vampire movies starring 80's sitcom stars, then this is the one to listen to. Also, the merits of laudanum use and the questionable politics of Tweety Bird. The titular song mentioned in the “Embrace of the Vampire” segment is “One Desire” by Claudia Kalleem. There doesn't seem to be a lot on her aside from contributing or acting to a few movies, most notably “Phat Beach” (which is in turn notable mainly because it was the directorial debut of “Entourage Guy”). Anyway, someone also created a fan video for “Fright Night” using the aforementioned song and it took me about 20 minutes to verify that it was indeed a fan video and not a cool easter egg. Albums discussed are “I am the Dog” (Sir Chloe) and “Flowers at your Feet” (Rahill) Songs featured in Episode 120. “Hooves” and “Le Femme Michelle”– Sir Chloe “Futbol” – Rahill We also talk about “American Nightmare” and “Be Your Own Pet” Find us at: www.trashsouthstreet.com trashsouthstreet@gmail.com Facebook.com/TSS Apple Music Amazon Podcasts

David's request in Psalm 27:4 portrays well the reality that the Lord is to be our soul's one true desire.
Like the Wizard of Oz, we all stand behind our own view of how we appear to others. And always apprehensive about asking for what we want. And that is if we even know.
