Full Text of ReadingsFriday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 393The Saint of the day is Saint Camillus de LellisSaint Camillus de Lellis’ Story Humanly speaking, Camillus was not a likely candidate for sainthood. His mother died when he was a child, his father neglected him, and he grew up with an excessive love for gambling. At 17, he was afflicted with a disease of his leg that remained with him for life. In Rome he entered the San Giacomo Hospital for Incurables as both patient and servant, but was dismissed for quarrelsomeness after nine months. He served in the Venetian army for three years. Then in the winter of 1574, when he was 24, Camillus gambled away everything he had—savings, weapons, literally down to his shirt. He accepted work at the Capuchin friary at Manfredonia, and was one day so moved by a sermon of the superior that he began a conversion that changed his life. He entered the Capuchin novitiate, but was dismissed because of the apparently incurable sore on his leg. After another stint of service at San Giacomo, he came back to the Capuchins, only to be dismissed again, for the same reason. Again, back at San Giacomo, his dedication was rewarded by his being made superintendent. Camillus devoted the rest of his life to the care of the sick. Along with Saint John of God he has been named patron of hospitals, nurses, and the sick. With the advice of his friend Saint Philip Neri, he studied for the priesthood and was ordained at the age of 34. Contrary to the advice of his friend, Camillus left San Giacomo and founded a congregation of his own. As superior, he devoted much of his own time to the care of the sick. Charity was his first concern, but the physical aspects of the hospital also received his diligent attention. Camillus insisted on cleanliness and the technical competence of those who served the sick. The members of his community bound themselves to serve prisoners and persons infected by the plague as well as those dying in private homes. Some of his men were with troops fighting in Hungary and Croatia in 1595, forming the first recorded military field ambulance. In Naples, he and his men went onto the galleys that had plague and were not allowed to land. He discovered that there were people being buried alive, and ordered his brothers to continue the prayers for the dying 15 minutes after apparent death. Camillus himself suffered the disease of his leg through his life. In his last illness, he left his own bed to see if other patients in the hospital needed help. Reflection Saints are created by God. Parents must indeed nurture the faith in their children; husbands and wives must cooperate to deepen their baptismal grace; friends must support each other. But all human effort is only the dispensing of divine power. We must all try as if everything depended on us. But only the power of God can fulfill the plan of God—to make us like himself.  12 This is my commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you.Hoc est praeceptum meum, ut diligatis invicem, sicut dilexi vos. 13 Greater love than this no man hath, that a man lay down his life for his friends.Majorem hac dilectionem nemo habet, ut animam suam ponat qui pro amicis suis. 14 You are my friends, if you do the things that I command you.Vos amici mei estis, si feceritis quae ego praecipio vobis. 15 I will not now call you servants: for the servant knoweth not what his lord doth. But I have called you friends: because all things whatsoever I have heard of my Father, I have made known to you.Jam non dicam vos servos : quia servus nescit quid faciat dominus ejus. Vos autem dixi amicos : quia omnia quaecumque audivi a Patre meo, nota feci vobis. 16 You have not chosen me: but I have chosen you; and have appointed you, that you should go, and should bring forth fruit; and your fruit should remain: that whatsoever you shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.Non vos me elegistis, sed ego elegi vos, et posui vos ut eatis, et fructum afferatis, et fructus vester maneat : ut quodcumque petieritis Patrem in nomine meo, det vobis.Of the noble family of Lellis, St Camillus, when still a young priest, consecrated his life to the service of the sick, even those stricken with the plague. He founded an Order of Hospitallers, which bears his name, and died a victim of his charity A.D. 1614.

We're still in the year 394 BCE and we've seen Camillus has had a run in with the Falsican Schoolmaster. In this episode we move on further into the action of 394 BCE and look at 393 BCE as well. Is Camillus learning how to keep a low profile? He is praised from his success over the Faliscans and he doesn't rush for a triumph this time. But the challenge remains, that Camillus' forgotten vow to Apollo might be about to bite him on the bottom.A fateful voyage!Rome is pretty intent on fulfilling Camillus' forgotten vow to Apollo and this means a boat trip is in order. But sailing to Greece is not for the faint hearted, especially when you have such precious cargo as a golden bowl in tow. Tune in for adventures on the high sea!War with the AequiansThe Aequians, a thorn in Rome's side? Yes indeed. Do our sources agree? Of course not. It's Diodorus Siculus against Livy, duking it out with Siculus having just a mention of trouble, while Livy comes packing details. We take you through the chaotic details. The conflict centres in the town of Verrugo but watch out for mention of Tusculum as well.New Year, New You?It's time for the Roman census! We also see a return of the consulship in 393 BCE! The tussle about moving some of Rome's population permanently to Veii is back on the agenda. There's a faction in favour of a move to Veii and a faction against. Our sources seem to position this as a patrician/plebeian divide, but it might be more confusing or complicated than that.More Aequians on the Horizon…Somehow, the Aequian forces, that were absolutely devastated in 394 BCE are BACK baby but their appearance seems only a flash in the pan compared to Rome's troubles at home. There's tribunes of the plebs to worry about, factional infighting over what to do about Veii, and some trials to contend with as well. It's an exhausting time to be in Roman politics! Enter scene right: Camillus… How important was the tribune of the plebs right of veto? What shapes who we become? Is it the milestones we achieve, the people we love, or the pain we endure?Sarah Gormley's "The Order of Things: A Memoir of Chasing Joy" offers no simple answers, but instead invites us into the beautiful messiness of one woman's journey toward self-acceptance and self-love. When Sarah returns to her family farm to care for her dying mother, she's at a crossroads. She's burnt out from a corporate career that never fulfilled her and haunted by a relentless inner voice telling her she's worthless despite her external success. What unfolds is far from the typical grief memoir. Between caring for her mother as she dies, Sarah unexpectedly falls in love with her brother's childhood friend, Camillus, and begins dismantling the protective walls she's built around herself. The book's non-linear format mirrors life's unpredictable nature. It jumps between Sarah's childhood memories, therapy sessions with the insightful (and amazing!!) David, raw moments at her mother's bedside, and all the ways Sarah's life is still expanding. We witness her unraveling the origins of her perfectionism and my friend, Colleen, and I discuss our own personal parallels to Sarah's journey. We chat about our core beliefs, finding and accepting love, and more.Through grief, love, and persistent self-examination, Sarah eventually learns to silence her inner critic and open herself to joy—not because she's earned it through achievement, but because she finally recognizes she deserves it simply by existing. Ready to reconsider your own timeline and the voices you've allowed to define your worth? Dive into this transformative memoir that reminds us all that the most meaningful journeys rarely follow the order we expect.Content advisory: we do discuss Sarah's eating disorderSupport the show:On Patreon Buy us a book Buy cute merchHave you read “The Order of Things"? In this episode, we continue to follow the adventures of that most amazing of Romans: Marcus Furius Camillus! This is one of his real shining moments of virtus.Although the Romans have just conquered Veii, there was tension on those mean city streets. The patricians and plebeians were locked in a disagreement over what they should do with this new territory. However, Camillus had military matters to attend to. He was placed in charge of subduing Veii's allies, the Faliscans. This was no easy task as the enemy was well-prepared and the city of Falerii was easily defended.Camillus was making some headway, but it looked as though this conflict was going to turn into another length siege. Boo!School for ScandalFortune sided with Camillus as the leading school teacher in Falerii decided to betray his people. He was in charge of the children of all the most important families in town, and what better way for kids to get exercise than to be marched right into the Roman camp?We don't want to give too much away, but what Camillus does next will make you swoon like a love-sick teen. It's 395 BCE and we explore the events that are the result of the epic year of 396 BCE. The Romans ended 396 BCE on a high with their military success against the southern-most city of the Etruscans, Veii. But is all well in the Roman world? That may depend on which god you talk to…An incomplete victory? The defeat of Veii leaves the northern peoples - the Capenates and Faliscans - open to Rome's wrath. Their resistance to Rome means that war is on Rome's agenda. This may also explain why we see military tribunes with consular power.A great time for some Roman colonising?Despite the threats to the north, Rome seems intent on setting up a new colony down south towards Volscian territory. Does Rome really have the resources to spare for such an endeavour after a ten-year siege and problems north of Veii? Well, historians have some questions about that! What's up Apollo?Camillus' glorious leadership in taking Veii seems to be undermined by the his vow to Apollo which he had apparently forgotten. This creates real problems as the 10th portion to be offered to Apollo was not collected when the booty was distributed and now people OWE the gods… Will Camillus' reputation emerge unscathed?Things to listen out forIs Veii more attractive to the plebeians than Rome? Clive explains to us from The Four Loves that every country has a dreary past of some shameful and shabby doings, but it's natural and good to love her nonetheless, within reason. We return for the final instalment on the fall of Veii in 396 BCE.In our previous episode, we witnessed the actual conquest of the great Etruscan city. Now it's Camillus' time to bask in the glory! He's a Real TripCamillus has managed to secure victory for Rome, and one of the advantages now that it's all over is that sweet, sweet booty. Everyone knew that Veii was wealthy, but Camillus is staggered (pun intended) by the number of captured spoils. As he offered detailed thanks to the gods, he stumbled. The Romans were a superstitious bunch, so although Camillus tried to gloss over this trip, it was seen as an omen. Camillus, and perhaps Rome herself, were destined to take a mighty tumble. Foreshadowing! But that all lay in the future. Camillus had to decide how to divvy up the booty. He tried to take the sensible path and consult with the Senate, but he failed to please most of the populace with his choices. Ingrates! This Lady IS for Turning! The fate of Veii's tutelary deity, Juno Regina, was an even more delicate matter. The Romans hoped they could persuade her to switch her allegiance and residence to Rome. Juno agrees to make the move and was initially established in a new temple on the Aventine. That little minx! This is the first example of the ritual of evocatio, which we sometimes see pop up when Rome conquers Etruscan cities. This may have something to do with the fact that the rite probably originated in Etruria. We wish we knew more about this fascinating practice, but as usual, we have more questions than answers. The religious calendars of Rome indicate that the cult of Juno Regina did begin at around this time, so this may lend some support to our historical narrative. Either way, Veii has now not only been conquered, but stripped of divine protection. OUCH.Celebrate Good Times, Come On!Back in the city, the Romans are thrilled with this military victory. Camillus was mobbed by crowds upon his return. No one will be surprised to hear that Camillus was awarded a triumph. EVERYTHING about it was OTT. Not everyone thought this triumph was in good taste. After such an important victory, Camillus was eroding those warm fuzzies in record time. That is, of course, if we can believe the details. It's hard to know what the norm was for a triumph in the early 4th century BCE.Camillus ignored the haters, and busied himself with all the vows and promises he had made to various deities. There were temples to build for Juno and Mater Matuta, and then there was also the matter of gifts to Apollo. Camillus had pledged one tenth of the booty seized. The pontiffs decided that this needed to come from the people, who were less than impressed with a request to return some of their share of the spoils. The Year That Had EverythingThe year wrapped up with peace being secured on multiple fronts. Perhaps after seeing Veii's defeat, the Volscians and Aequians decided to sue for peace themselves.396 BCE truly was an epic year. The money, the violence, the drugs, the greed, and the murders that surrounded her, as well as her deep passion to break free from a lifestyle that could change with the flash of a single bullet. Swan's firsthand, intimate look inside the insular and secretive Chicago Outfit details her life inside the Calabrese Clan, one of the First Families of the Chicago Mob. She describes, with clarity and occasional humor, her discovery of the dark side of the Mafia and her battle to save herself, her children, and eventually her husband from the gritty realities of the Mob. In this episode, we learn that Vinnie Teresa was an early mobster in the FBI's vaunted Top Echelon Informant program. In the end, Vinne Teresa was caught in an act of perjury when he tried to implicate Meyer Lansky in a criminal conspiracy.   Subscribe to get new gangster stories every week. Karl mentions research suggesting that more than 22 pounds of subcutaneous fat may cause problems, though this varies by individual. - **Visceral Fat**: Surrounding the organs, visceral fat is more harmful than subcutaneous fat. Karl explains that chronic stress contributes to its accumulation due to cortisol release, increasing the risk of heart disease and metabolic disorders. - **Liver Fat**: Karl describes liver fat as the most dangerous type, leading to severe metabolic issues even with just half a pound present. He highlights the role of high sugar intake and alcohol consumption in liver fat accumulation. **Diet and Processed Foods** Karl emphasizes the importance of avoiding processed foods, which contribute significantly to fatty liver disease. He highlights alarming statistics about non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, affecting a large portion of the U.S. population, including children. **Whole Foods and Health** Advocating for a diet rich in minimally processed whole foods, Karl stresses their role in supporting mitochondrial function and reducing stress. He warns against excessive fructose consumption, which can be harmful when not consumed with the fiber and antioxidants found in whole fruits. **Intramuscular Fat** Karl explains intramuscular fat, which can be mistaken for muscle mass, potentially misleading individuals tracking their fitness progress. He emphasizes understanding body composition nuances to accurately assess health. **Conclusion** Karl concludes by encouraging listeners to take control of their health, explore recommended resources, and consider visiting his clinic. Understanding the nuances of fat and metabolism, he notes, empowers individuals to make healthier choices and improve their quality of life.

Full Text of ReadingsThursday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 392The Saint of the day is Saint Camillus de LellisSaint Camillus de Lellis’ Story Humanly speaking, Camillus was not a likely candidate for sainthood. 16 You have not chosen me: but I have chosen you; and have appointed you, that you should go, and should bring forth fruit; and your fruit should remain: that whatsoever you shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.Non vos me elegistis, sed ego elegi vos, et posui vos ut eatis, et fructum afferatis, et fructus vester maneat : ut quodcumque petieritis Patrem in nomine meo, det vobis.

BIBLE IN TEN

Wednesday, 12 June 2024   And landing at Syracuse, we stayed three days. Acts 28:12   The verb is an aorist participle, “And having brought down at Syracuse, we stayed three days” (CG).   In the previous verse, Paul and those with him departed Malta after having been there for three months. Luke continues this next leg of the journey, beginning with, “And having brought down.”   Departing on a ship is to go up to the high seas. When arriving at a new destination, one comes down again. The ship was brought down from the sea “at Syracuse.”   Syracuse, or Surakousai in Greek, is a city noted only here in the Bible. It is a city which was made famous during the Peloponnesian war. It was, and still is, a flourishing town of Sicily. It is 92 miles as the crow flies from Malta, but a bit more by boat because it is on the southeast corner of the coast of Sicily.   It can be reached in a bit over a day by boat. Ships bound from Alexandria on their way to Italy frequently put in there. It was one of the major powers of the Mediterranean world at this time. They probably stopped there to sell and offload wares and then pick up any other things or travelers for their continued voyage. Today Syracuse has a population of about 125,000.   Once the ship arrived there, Luke next notes that “we stayed three days.” The ship they were on had been at Malta over the winter. If the men were on the same ship when leaving Syracuse, it may be that it took three days to offload cargo and load on other things.   Or it may be that they switched ships to continue their journey to Rome and the first one departing took three days to get a booking on. Luke does not explain the matter either way but simply gives the duration of time they were in Syracuse. After three months on Malta, three days at this location would have flown by.   Life application: Speaking of flying by, the NKJV says the ship was “landing at Syracuse.” Not only is the tense of the verb wrong, but that can have more than one meaning. Landing at Syracuse may mean on the other side of the Atlantic!   Hancock International Airport is a city owned, joint civil-military airport five miles northeast of downtown Syracuse, in Onondaga County, New York.   The airport is off Interstate 81 near Mattydale, New York. Wikipedia says that “In 1927 Syracuse mayor Charles Hanna felt his city needed an airport. A location at Amboy in the town of Camillus, New York was purchased for $50,000, and by 1928, the ‘Syracuse City Airport at Amboy' was handling airmail.”   At the end of World War II, the United States Army Air Corps leased their bomber base near Mattydale, New York to the city. On September 17, 1949, the Clarence E. Hancock Airport opened to the public using a renovated machine shop as a terminal, and replaced the airport at Amboy. To learn more about this airport at Syracuse, refer to their website on the internet.    This might sound like a pointless diversion concerning another location named Syracuse, but it is given to highlight the fact that there are innumerable locations in the United States that are named based on other locations, many are right out of the Bible.   The movement of people from one location to another where there had not yet been a name given for the place necessitated those new locations be given names. Some are obvious, such as New York being named based on the movement of people from York in the UK. Others are obvious because of the connection to famous biblical sights, such as Bethlehem, New York, and Canaan, Connecticut.   However, many other areas also have biblical names that may not be as famous. In Connecticut, there is Sharon, Gilead, Hebron, Mount Carmel, and so forth. This trend continues in many states throughout the US. A rich biblical heritage permeates the nation's founding. However, those traditions are quickly fading away. The prosperity of the people, and the movement to a non-biblical worldview, have erased much of the Christian heritage of the land.   If you are familiar with biblical names of people and places, you can use that familiarity to start conversations with people and form a connection between the name and its source. From there, you can then bring in the overall message of the Bible, that it is the story of God's plan of redemption of man from the power of sin and the devil, all focused on Jesus.   When they see a connection between their name or the name of their city with the Bible, they may want to know more. Be ready at all times to think of interesting ways of getting people interested in knowing more about the word! It is the message that can change the eternal destiny of people from a not-so-happy ending to an eternity of delight.   Lord God, help us to always be ready to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others. May our words bring them to want to know more and to become interested in reading Your word. People need Jesus and the Bible tells us about Him. So, Lord, help us in this! Amen.

The Plutarch Podcast

Full Show Notes for Camillus - Noble Roman DictatorGreek Parallel - ThemistoclesNo Extant Parallel Essay - :(Important PeopleBrennus - Gallic chieftan, unscrupulous and forceful, but without much character development as Plutarch did for other villains (see, for example, Alexander of Pherae's character development in the Life of Pelopidas or Dionysius II's tyrannical character as developed in the Life of Dion). The Common (Ro)Man - Whether volunteering to give your wagon to Vestal Virgins or to take a risky message across enemy lines and back again, the common Romans do a great deal in this life. This creates a great parallel with the Life of Publicola, whose life features the brave deeds of so many Romans other than himself.Important PlacesArdea - Camillus's chosen spot of exileRome - What's in a city? When it's all been burned to the ground, should the Romans rebuild or colonize elsewhere?Allia - Battle v. The GaulsSutrium - An ally of Rome which the Tuscans besiege calling for unprecedented tactics on the part of the Romans.Key Virtues and Vicesφρόνησις - practical judgment - Not quite prudence, but the lower element of it that chooses the means most appropriate to the ends. His parallel, Themistocles, had this in spades, but Camillus is no slouch at planning and tactics, both political and military. Moderation - μετριότης (cf. 11 for lack of it in grieving)Boldness of Speech - παρρησία - This one often is on a knife's edge between vice and virtue. This is the same key word that Luke uses in Acts of the Apostles when describing the boldness with which the apostles preached about Jesus. Plutarch, writing after Luke and with no knowledge of the man, already recognizes  the long Greek history behind this word. Hatred - ἀπεχθεία - You will accrue allies, but you will also accrue enemies in doing worthy political work. Gentleness - ἥμερος (cf. 11) - Here one almost wishes his parallel were Pericles, though he is *not* as gentle as Pericles, so again Plutarch chose well in that parallel too (see next month for the Life of Fabius!)Kindliness - χρηστός (cf. 11) - Has at its root usefulness, and was a key virtue in the life of that obscure Greek, Pelopidas. Avoidance of Conflict - On several occasions Camillus seems to choose to do the easier thing, rather than having the difficult conversation or confrontation necessary to ensure the right action is taken.Justice - δικαιοσύνη - More important even than victory, Camillus's conscientious application of the law even to his enemies in war wins him admiration and trust on both sides of a conflict.Support the show

Full Text of ReadingsTuesday of the Fifteenth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 390The Saint of the day is Saint Camillus de LellisSaint Camillus de Lellis’ Story Humanly speaking, Camillus was not a likely candidate for sainthood.
