On this episode of the Friends in Beauty podcast I welcome Nakoya Yancey to the Friends in Beauty guest chair. Nakoya is a Hair Designer, with over 30 years of professional experience. She is also a UK trained Wig Maker and Facial Hair Piece Maker. Watching the famous show The Wire on HBO peaked Nakoya's curiosity in the Film and Television world of Hair Styling. In 2009 Nakoya got her first break on the film The Best and The Brightest. From that day on Nakoya never looked back. Nakoya learned period wig styling from working on the AMC television show Turn. After six hard years Nakoya was able to join the IASTE Local 798 Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Union in 2015. Working on Turn Nakoya was able to see and work with wigs that were made by Peter Owen, Peter King, and Ray Marston. Nakoya's next move was to go to England and learn the timeless craft of Wig Making. This move took her to another level. She started working in New York shortly after coming back from England and with the knowledge and craft she learned overseas, she landed a job on The Greatest Showman as a Wig Maker. Nakoya has been blessed enough to work under the legendary Jerry Popolis, the late Kenneth Walker, Nathan Busch, and Jerry DeCarlo. Some of Nakoya's credits include If Beale Street Could Talk, One Night In Miami, And Just Like That Season 1, Shirley, Queen Suga, and most recently The Book of Clarence to name a few. Nakoya's main goal is to grow, educate herself, stay fluid, and viable in this ever changing industry. Enjoy this episode!! We stick with the fantasy thing for one more week, but with a different spin, as we examine a pair of films that have more of a "What If?" thing going on. In the first half of our episode we have INSIGNIFICANCE (1985), based on the play of the same name by Terry Johnson and directed here by Nicolas Roeg. We see four almost-unnamed famous people come together in a very interesting way in the late 1950s. Whether you believe the events here could have happened is up to you, but you'll be entranced nonetheless. In Part 2, we'll see another quartet of icons meeting in the early 1960s, in ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI...(2020). --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wordsandmovies/support
In this half of the show, we jump to the early 1960s as four more icons come together ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI...(2020). This meeting is a little more contentious than in INSIGNIFICANCE, and while this meeting didn't happen, the characters and their reactions have a truthful feel that allows you to believe it would have been exactly like this. COMING ATTRACTIONS: Next time around, we look at love during wartime, as we screen THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING (1988), a story that takes place in the late 1960s in Prague and Switzerland. Then we skip back to post-WW2 Poland for COLD WAR (2018). Both films have similar endings but how they get there is vastly different. Welcome back to another episode of The Culture Garden Podcast! We appreciate you joining us as we discuss Regina King's directorial debut, One Night In Miami. Regina King debuted "One Night In Miami..." in various film festivals and have received nothing from praise, adapting a play into a visual experience of four legends all in one screen and in the same area. It's very impressive. I dig the film for its message of unity, equal rights, and staying true to yourself because fame can get you and turn you into the opposite of you. I did wish the film had a bit more as far as pushing th story forward but with four men, it's tough to for everyone to have equal dialog. That itself is difficult but that alone is something Regina King welcomed. She welcomed the challenge of exercising the voices of four men after witnessing a friend become champion of boxing but to become more than that. I get it, Regina. I get it. Nonetheless, watch this film. It's entertaining and poignant.Three and half tokes out of four.
For the month of February, the podcast has been given to black voices. Today's episode starts out with some revolutionaries; those who took on the world. Februrary 21st also marks the anniversary of Malcolm X's assasination. Spike Lee's Masterpiece Malcolm X seems appropriate to include this month, and is streaming on HBO. Also on HBO, we have the story of Fred Hampton, a Black Messiah whose voice was snuffed out far too early. On Amazon Prime exists a beautiful film about Malcolm X, Jim Brown, Cassius Clay (right before he became Ali), and Sam Cooke. One Night in Miami is an excellent watch that I think everyone should see. These 3 films are each powerful stories about people who gave their lives to shape our modern culture. On this episode we're discussing the movie One Night In Miami, directed by Regina King, and starring Kingsley Ben-Adir, Leslie Odom Jr., Aldis Hodge, and Eli Goree. A quick synopsis, On the night of Feb. 25, 1964, in Miami, Cassius Clay joins Jim Brown, Sam Cooke and Malcom X, and they discuss the responsibility of being successful black men during the civil rights movement.
Black Summit 64 - Regina King's One Night in Miami On this week's episode of WatchThis W/RickRamos, Mr. Chavez & I sit down to discuss the 2020 critical hit from first-time director, Regina King, One Night in Miami. A fictionalized portrait of a meeting between four of the leading figures of 1960s Black Culture: Soul Singer, Sam Cooke (portrayed by Leslie Odom Jr.)/NFL fullback and soon-to be Hollywood icon, Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge)/Muslim minister and Human Rights activist, Malcolm X (later Malik el-Shabazz - portrayed by Kingsley Ben-Adir), and the 22 year old Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Civil Rights Leader, and Cultural Icon, Cassius Clay - on the cusp of becomming Muhammad Ali (Eli Goree). It goes without saying King's film is one that rarely gets made. A work of subtlety and nuance that looks into the lives of the Black struggle and the roles of leaders in said struggle. It's a film that we walked into unsure of and walked out of excited by the conversation that would ensue. Take a listen and let us know what you think. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many Thanks for Your Continued Love & Support.
“Brutus… the way Captain Kirk would do it.” Lance Reddick performs the Shakespeare monologue he memorized for a high school homework assignment that made him want to be an actor. The star of HBO's The Wire also speaks his mind on the show's true legacy, sounds off on his big scene in ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI that was cut from the film, and dishes on taking direction from “a stunt guy” in the JOHN WICK films. Lance brings unforgettable gravitas to every role he plays. His method? Grounding his characters in reality and “just trusting the words”

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture We are back to doing Patreon Throwback Podcast reviews here at Next Best Picture! For our second of 2021, to help us get ready for the release of "One Night In Miami," we are taking one of that film's key central figures and looking back on his own biopic film from director Spike Lee, "Malcolm X." For this review, I am being joined by Nicole Ackman, Josh Parham, Danilo Castro, guest Sharronda Williams from PayOrWait.com and Patreon guest Giovanni Lago.
