#155 The Black Phone, Petite Maman, Justice League: Doom Continuing our Batman marathon, we review a film where Batman isn't the main player, but a part of an ensemble. Justice League: Doom involves a doomsday scheme of turning weaknesses onto the heroes; simultaneously. Petite Maman is a wonderful tale of a young girl hanging out with her mom at the age of 8 and figuring out family dynamics, death; with an emotionally mature core. The Black Phone is the latest horror hit in theaters featuring a Stephen King-like setting, time period and supernatural flairs. He also wrote four other films in the DC Universe series of animated films "Justice League Dark," "Teen Titans: The Judas Contract," "Batman: Hush," and "Justice League Dark: Apokolips War." He's also written for many animated series including "Spider-Man – The Animated Series," "Green Lantern," "Static Shock," and "Justice League Action." In this episode, he talks about the dark nature of Injustice and Apokolips War and the challenges of writing classic characters in more adult plots. In episode 21 of the Variant Podcast, we continue right along our journey through the DC Animated Universe as we talk all things Justice League Dark. Released in 2017, Justice League Dark features an original premise, unlike the rest of the films we have talked about so far. While there is a Justice League Dark comic book, the film did not use that as the source material, rather, just used some of the characters. The movie serves as a prequel to Justice League Dark: Apokolips War which was released in May 2020. Directed by none other than Jay Oliva, the film stars Matt Ryan as John Constantine and Jason O'Mara reprising his role as Batman. We at the Variant Podcast give this film 3.8/5 stars. The News The past few months have contained quite a few big headlines for comics fans, despite a lot of distributors halting production. That includes the release of the animated movie Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, which marks the end of the DC Comics Animated Universe. James Gunn also teased that someone major would die in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Plus, Henry Cavill announces he will be returning the DC Comics Cinematic Universe as Superman. The Snyder Cut The other big news shaking the comic book world is that HBO Max, a new streaming platform for HBO will release the Snyder Cut, or rather help to finish it. The Snyder Cut isn't actually done and HBO estimates it would take some $30 Million dollars to finish it. Robbie and Ben are joined by a new member of The Other Identity team, Kevin Kelly, to discuss what this means across the board for the world of superhero fans.
