The 2023 movie Barbie and its accompanying marketing blitz reinstated a celebrated icon at the forefront of cultural conversation. This sudden goodwill stood in contrast to decades of criticism of the Barbie brand. Although proponents had celebrated Barbie for her promise to “inspire the limitless potential in every girl,” detractors felt that the doll promoted a narrow beauty standard and perpetuated gender stereotypes. In this episode of Cold Call, HBS Professor Elie Ofek and coauthor Ryann Noe join host Brian Kenny to discuss the case “Barbie: Reviving a Cultural Icon at Mattel.” They explore how Mattel planned to sustain the Barbie brand's positive momentum and replicate its success across other toy brands.

The Virgin of Guadalupe is a cultural icon with deep roots in Mexican and Chicano communities across the United States and Mexico, among other places. Artists in New Mexico often reference Guadalupe in their work—including Chicana artist Delilah Montoya.  A mixed-media piece, “La Guadalupana,” by Montoya features a large photograph of the Virgin of Guadalupe as tattooed on the back of an incarcerated man. It is one of the many works of art on display at New Mexico Museum of Art's Vladem Contemporary as a part of their “identity” theme in Off-Center. Katie Doyle, assistant curator at the New Mexico Museum of Art, says Montoya's work fits in with Vladem's exhibition because it tells one of many essential stories about the cultural and historical issues that have continued to affect people in New Mexico.  Mentioned in this Episode:  Gloria Anzaldúa on la Virgen de Guadalupe Off-Center: New Mexico Art, 1970-2000 at New Mexico Museum of Art's Vladem Contemporary La Guadalupana by Delilah Montoya Chicano Awareness Center in Omaha, Nebraska Civil Rights Movement in Omaha, Nebraska National Geographic article about DNA and human ancestry *** We'd love to hear from you! James Bond, Ian Fleming's irrepressible and ubiquitous ‘spy,' is often understood as a Cold Warrior, but James Bond's Cold War diverged from the actual global conflict in subtle but significant ways. That tension between the real and fictional provides perspectives into Cold War culture transcending ideological and geopolitical divides. The Bondiverse is complex and multi-textual, including novels, films, video games, and even a comic strip, and has also inspired an array of homages, copies, and competitors. Awareness of its rich possibilities only becomes apparent through a multi-disciplinary lens. The desire to consider current trends in Bondian studies inspired a conference entitled ‘The Bondian Cold War,' convened at Tallinn University, Estonia in June 2019. Conference participants, drawn from three continents and multiple disciplines – film studies, history, intelligence studies, and literature, as well as intelligence practitioners – offered papers on the literary and cinematic aspects of the ‘spy', discussed fact versus fiction in the Bond canon, went in search of a global Bond, and pondered gender and sexuality across the Bondiverse. Susie describes the Olympic moment when Greg Louganis hit his head on the diving board and how it forced him to make the ethical decision on whether to disclose his HIV+ diagnosis. We discuss an article in the New Yorker by John Lahr about what it was like to have the cowardly lion (Bert Lahr) from the Wizard oz Oz as his dad, the challenge of being a cultural icon, and how some people can be outgoing and gregarious in public and sullen and despondent in private. Spectrality disrupts and fissures our conceptions of time, unmaking and complicating binaries such as life and death, presence and absence, the visible and the invisible, and literality and metaphor. A contribution to current conversations in memory studies and spectrality studies, Mind the Ghost: Thinking Memory and the Untimely Through Contemporary Fiction in French (Liverpool UP, 2023) is an experiment in reading ghosts otherwise. It explores, through contemporary fiction in French, sites of textual haunting that take the form of names, lists, objects, photographs, and stains.  The book turns to Jacques Derrida and Hélène Cixous to rethink what constitutes and functions as a ghost, proposing that this figure solicits readers' investment in mnemonic practices. Considering the memories and legacies of violence that have marked the greater part of the twentieth-century – in Algeria, Bosnia, Croatia, France, and Rwanda – this book traces absences, disappearances and reappearances, textual omissions and untimely irruptions to posit literature's power to both remember and communicate beyond the bounds of chronological time. Through close readings of recent fiction by Kaouther Adimi, Jakuta Alikavazovic, Gaël Faye, Jérôme Ferrari, Patrick Modiano, Lydie Salvayre, Leïla Sebbar, and Cécile Wajsbrot, Mind the Ghost articulates the mechanisms through which readers themselves become haunted. Ever wondered how a wobbly bag of water turned into a cultural symbol of comfort and rebellion? Meet the man who started it all! In this episode, Mark Kinsley dives into the deep end with Charlie Hall, the legendary inventor of the waterbed. Charlie spills the story of how a graduate project aimed at comfort morphed into a nationwide sensation that made waves in the bedroom (literally). From his original vision of a super-comfy chair to pioneering an entire sleep revolution, Charlie gives us the behind-the-scenes scoop on the highs, lows, and splashes along the way. Plus, he talks about his other ventures, like creating sun showers for happy campers, and even a few tales about frolicking (interpret that as you wish) on early waterbed prototypes. Whether you're a sleep enthusiast, a curious inventor, or just someone who appreciates comfort, this episode will have you floating with interest. KEY TAKEAWAYS The Genesis of the Waterbed: What started as a chair evolved into a mattress, and it all came down to comfort and a quest to conquer pressure points. The Wild Ride to Market: From art galleries to head shops, the waterbed's rise was full of quirky detours, investors with deep pockets, and surprising celebrity endorsements. Changing the Game: Before waterbeds, "firmer is better" was the mantra. Charlie's wavy creation made the industry rethink comfort, paving the way for memory foam and beyond.

Music has helped me through difficult situations because… it lets me get through them…if you're going through hell why stop there?" Fabolous Throughout history, music has been a timeless aspect of society that connects people and has the ability to document the times through lyrics and style. Hip Hop has always connected with sports on another level as a form of expression and often celebration of athletes. On this episode of The Pivot, in partnership with Fanatics, Ryan, Channing and Fred chop it up with one of the most respected and iconic rappers from the early 2000s – Fabolous. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Fab reminisces about releasing his first album in 2001, and the motivation behind creating the chart topping record. To put it in perspective on how it resonated, Fab shares a story on how he saw Tom Brady this past summer and first thing Brady referred to him as is one of the original 01' boys, reiterating what Fab's music represented during that era and Fred recalls the one line that was even about him during that time. While Fab may be underrated to some, the guys double down on why he's one of the most respected artists of all time in hip hop and for the culture. Fab's got six albums and over three million records sold in the U.S., but it's not just the numbers that tell his story, it's his experiences that have truly shaped him. Relying on OG's in the rap game, Fab always was looking to learn and take chances to get where he wanted to go. He shares some words of wisdom with the guys reflecting on his journey, talking about the rap game then vs. now, what he's learned about himself as an artist and more importantly as a man and describes how a generational shift in hip hop is shaping today's music scene differently. Fab talks about how the intersection of music and sports goes hand in hand and inspired his creativity and lyrics. He breaks down Knicks vs. Nets, plus legends like Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson, and Muhammad Ali—icons who shaped his take on sports and celebrity and shares a story about his son with Steph Curry which is a lesson on opportunity and making most of every chance, an approach he lives by and credits to his music career taking off. With music being a whole different vibe in the early 2000's vs today's social media-driven world, Fab opens up about how music helped him overcome tough situations and rise above negativity while discussing how accessibility influences sustainability, especially in a competitive space. Tap in now for a conversation that starts with music and weaves in and out of 25+ years of stories, experiences and keys to getting to the top and staying there from a legend. Raised in Jamaica, Mary Seacole first came to England in the 1850s after working in Panama. She wanted to volunteer as a nurse and aide during the Crimean War. When her services were rejected, she financed her own expedition to Balaclava, where her reputation for her nursing—and for her compassion—became almost legendary. Popularly known as ‘Mother Seacole', she was the most famous Black celebrity of her generation—an extraordinary achievement in Victorian Britain. She regularly mixed with illustrious royal and military patrons and they, along with grateful war veterans, helped her recover financially when she faced bankruptcy. However, after her death in 1881, she was largely forgotten. More recently, her profile has been revived and her reputation lionized, with a statue of her standing outside St Thomas's Hospital in London and her portrait—rediscovered by the author—now on display in the National Portrait Gallery. In Search of Mary Seacole is the fruit of almost twenty years of research and reveals the truth about Seacole's personal life, her "rivalry" with Florence Nightingale, and other misconceptions. Vivid and moving, In Search of Mary Seacole: The Making of a Black Cultural Icon (Pegasus Books, 2022) shows that reality is often more remarkable and more dramatic than the legend. Does Boxing's Concussion Danger Outweigh Its Sporting and Cultural Value? From ‘Rocky' to ‘Creed': Boxing as a Cultural Icon

Professional boxing poses risks of concussion-related brain trauma. Yet from “Rocky” to “Creed,” we see boxing persist as a cultural icon. Does boxing's value as a sport and the lifeline it can offer young people justify its dangers?   On Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon, U.S.A. Boxing team physician Dr. Barry Jordan highlights the brain-trauma dangers that he's encountered in the sport. Dr. Jordan has 40 years experience in sports neurology.   “In boxing, they say it's the punch you don't see. [For] soccer, it's the ball you don't see. If you don't see the ball coming, it may catch you off guard and it causes your head to move and that could cause a problem.”   Antonio Graceffo, former professional boxer in Asia, now China economist, gives his first-hand accounts of boxing injury.   “You'd see the punch coming. And you're so tired that you debate, ‘Would I rather let that punch hit me? Or would I rather move out of the way?'”   Despite its brain health dangers, both experts have chosen to support boxing in their own capacities. What deeper value do they see in the sport, particularly for youth?   How does the “rise from the ghetto” theme in movies like “Rocky” and “Creed” stand up to the reality for pro-boxer hopefuls?   ⭕️ Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV

In this second part in a special two-part installment of Sasquatch Tracks, veteran researcher Matt Pruitt returns to the podcast to discuss his new book The Phenomenal Sasquatch: Seeking the Natural Origins of a Cultural Icon, a tour-de-force of intellectual exploration in the study of the relict hominoid mystery,  In the new book, Pruitt explores the possibility that sasquatches are simply large, rare primates, and delves into the psychological factors that may be at play during people's encounters with these creatures. Alternatively, he considers the hypothesis that the sasquatch is merely a construct of the human mind that exists only in stories and art. In this thought-provoking work, Pruitt presents a balanced and rigorous analysis, providing readers with an in-depth look into the search for the natural origins of this cultural icon.  Along with his own written works and other contributions, Matt is the producer and editor of the podcast Bigfoot & Beyond with Cliff and Bobo.
