Hello and welcome to Entangled! The podcast where we explore the science of consciousness, the true nature of reality, and what it means to be a spiritual being having a human experience. I'm your host Jordan Youkilis, and today I'm joined by Dr. Fred Travis as part of the miniseries on Maharishi Vedic Science. Dr. Travis is Chair of the Department of Maharishi Vedic Science at Maharishi International University, Dean of the Graduate School, and Director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness, & Cognition. In this episode, Dr. Travis describes the points of contention regarding the nature of consciousness between Vedic science and Western science, including the explanatory gap. We next discuss the states of consciousness and the different physiological characteristics of each. From there, Dr. Travis explains the different types of intelligence, the different types of meditation, and how to know if you've experienced Transcendental Consciousness. We then dive into the ongoing paradigmatic revolution from materialist to consciousness-based cosmology. We next consider whether consciousness is non-localized and how medicine will change when we switch to a consciousness-based paradigm. From there, we discuss TM vs. psychedelics and the phenomenon of unconstrained cognition. We end the conversation discussing the collective consciousness, field effects of consciousness, and their implications for the viability of World Peace. Mark speaks with Tony Nader, MD, PhD, Dr. Nader, a globally recognized expert in the science of consciousness and human development who is the head of the Transcendental Meditation organizations globally. Tony is an MIT and Harvard trained doctor and neuroscientist and the author of The One Unbounded Ocean of Consciousness, through which he brings the science of consciousness to new audiences and expands the understanding of the relationship between mind and body, consciousness and physiology, and the possibility to development full human potential. Today, Commander Divine speaks with Tony Nader, MD, PhD, global expert in the science of consciousness and human development and head of the Transcendental Meditation organizations globally. In the episode, Tony shares the science of consciousness and the relationship between mind and body, consciousness and physiology, and the possibility to develop full human potential. Key Takeaways: Transcendental Meditation as an inner and outer practice. The reality is many Westerners think of meditation as an internal-only practice and therefore avoid it at all costs. Transcendental Meditation (TM), which Dr. Nader champions in the West, is instead both an internal and external practice, used to create more harmony in our real world lives. The survey says… meditate! Tony shares how TM has created research-backed results in both physical and mental realms. For instance, TM practitioners experience increased mental clarity, peace, and happiness, as well as less physiological stress, better healing and ability to concentrate - even (get this) better behavior! Ultimate reality and… rock consciousness? Tony details how TM allows practitioners to experience ultimate reality, which is the experience of all consciousness, everything, as one. Oh, and that includes rocks, which also hold consciousness, albeit of lower values than us humans. Less than 1% to heal the world. Studies have shown, including an experiment done in Washington, D.C., that when less than 1% of a population come together and practice Transcendental Meditation, there are cosmic shifts in the overall population behaviorally and mentally. Less car crashes, less violence, crime, and so on. TM is quite literally changing the world, by bringing us into harmony with the all-encompassing oneness of everything.

Tony Nader is a globally recognized Vedic Scholar, and as Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's successor, he is head of the international Transcendental Meditation centers in over 100 countries. But Nader is also a medical doctor and has a PhD in neuroscience, trained at Harvard and MIT. As you will notice in this episode, he includes thorough science when outlining his view on life and consciousness. In fact, Nader's book One Unbounded Ocean of Consciousness, published last year, is the perfect crossover between science and spirituality. It is counterintuitive for many people to see matter as something that arises from consciousness, rather than the other way around. But consciousness is primary, Tony explains. ”It has been shown through history, and more recent knowledge has demonstrated, that our senses only give us certain aspects of what reality is.” We perceive time and space as fixed, but the special and the general theory of relativity have shown that they are not. The smallest particles are not particles but fluctuations in a field. ”There is this theory of the unified field. The field interacts with itself. It creates waves, which adjust and move with each other. They create structures. The structures appear as objects. The more complex the structures are, the more complex objects they appear to form.” ”So what we perceive with our senses is real, but it is only one aspect of the true nature of things”, Tony says. Everything is completely interconnected. ”This is not wishful esoteric thinking any more, this is science.” Descartes introduced dualism by dividing the physical and the non-physical. But if we want a monistic view, an all-encompassing view, should we start in matter or in consciousness? Physicalists start in the former, obviously: Everything is physical, and consciousness mysteriously arises from matter. Already in the Vedic tradition, consciousness is primary. Today, the same view is held by for example the philosophical orientation called idealism (see ep 83, Bernardo Kastrup). But if consciousness is primary, how does it appear as matter? Why a big bang and physical manifestation? ”Consciousness wants to know itself in all possible ways. But when it is merely imagining all potentialities, it is knowing all this from its own unbounded perspective. It doesn't know what it is like to experience from those limited perspectives”, Tony says. Hence the manifestation into a universe of myriad aspects of the absolute consciousness: Entities at every possible level of consciousness. Time and space are concepts that allow for separation. If a thousand people are to sit down, you either put them one after another a thousand times in one chair, or you produce a thousand chairs they can sit in at the same time. From the maximum level of perceived separation, the journey goes back towards the absolute consciousness again. This is what Tony calls the synthesis path. From a human perspective, this is transcendence. ”All of this creation is just knowledge. It is to know from different perspectives. That is the force of life. That is what it is all about.” So, an absolute consciousness, an unbounded ocean of consciousness, is that what some call God? ”You can call it God, but this concept is defined differently in different belief systems.” To practice transcendental meditation is to go back to the ultimate self, reestablish wholeness, grow in consciousness. Groups of people practicing TM have actually been shown to diminish the levels of crime and violence in large areas. ”The research is accurate and published in peer reviewed journals. We can change the collective awareness.” Tony's website Tony's book Transcendental meditation

While most other theories accept the naturalism of the physical sciences and at most regard consciousness as an additional property of the fundamental stuff along with matter, Dr. Nader proposes that there is nothing other than consciousness and that matter and the multiplicity of loci of consciousness, us, for one, are nothing but consciousness experiencing itself from limited perspectives that hide the true nature of both the observer and the observed. It has been assumed that our senses were shaped to show us truths about our environment that were necessary for our survival. But the question arose, can we truly perceive the truth through our sensory systems? Professor Donald Hoffman, is a Professor of Cognitive Science at the University of California, Irvine, and author of "Visual Intelligence: How We Create What We See". He also co authored "Observer Mechanics: A Formal Theory of Perception". Dr. Hoffman's research interests and theories are in the areas of Vision, Cognitive Science, Consciousness, and Evolutionary Models of Perception. He's received the Troland Research Prize of the US National Academy of Sciences and the Early Career Award of the American Psychological Association. Like this show? Please leave us a review here! In this episode, I share an original essay titled, "Is Consciousness the Next Paradigm?". I believe we are on the brink of a paradigm shift in modern science. This shift will replace our current, broken ideas of mind-body duality and quantum mechanics with a paradigm based in consciousness. A physics that recognizes everything in our manifest existence, known as the “gross realm of the senses”, is connected through a subtler, abstract Unified Field of Consciousness that serves as the foundation for the entirety of the cosmos. This paradigm shift will be as important for our understanding of cosmology as was the shift from a geocentric to a heliocentric model during the Scientific Enlightenment. This paradigm shift will impact all fields of science – including psychology, medicine, and astronomy – and in turn, the advancements in these fields of study will significantly improve human development globally. In part one of this essay, I'll highlight two phenomenon which our current quantum mechanics paradigm cannot explain: Quantum Entanglement and a Theory of Everything capable of uniting gravity with the electromagnetic force. I'll then discuss two metaphysical concepts, the Holographic Universe and the Unified Field of Consciousness, and how these complementary ideas provide a stronger foundational view of physics than our current one. In part two, I'll provide historical context as to why the exploration of consciousness has been relegated to a “fringe” science, and its researchers frequently dismissed as pseudo-scientists. Specifically, I'll highlight the two power structures who've exerted the most control over the individual's exploration of conscious thought over the past two millennia, first the dogma of the Catholic Church and second the dogma of scientific materialism. In part three, I'll argue that society is currently in the midst of an “Archaic Revival” – where we return to the wisdom of the ancient, spiritual traditions and recognize that mind and matter are in fact one. I'll further argue that this revival is being driven both from the top down and from the bottom up. From the top down in that the body of scientific evidence in support of a consciousness-based paradigm is now so strong that conventional physicists will soon be forced to accept the validity of their models. From the bottom up because individuals across the world are waking up to their true Nature and to the importance of consciousness. To that end, I'll specifically highlight the resurgence in psychedelic therapies and the continued growth of the Transcendental Meditation movement as a simple, practical way for people to integrate higher planes of consciousness into their daily lives. In this episode, Dr Nader focuses on chapter 6 of his book, One Unbounded Ocean of Consciousness, to look at how our perceptions color our reality. “Einstein began by saying something that seemed inconceivable; that space and time are related, and they are both relative. According to this theory, the things you most trust and depend on – that you're standing on this solid ground, that time goes by the ticking of the clock, that your lifespan is X years – are not fixed and absolute, but relative. If you were to travel at the speed of light or close to it, time would stop, and you would not age. Space, too, would completely change, depending on your speed, it would either dilate or contract. So what is the 'true' reality?” Get your book today!
