In this episode, Jason and I discuss one of the biggest challenges facing America today: the health crisis fueled by our food system. Jason, a former hedge fund manager turned health entrepreneur, shares how his personal journey through professional burnout, depression, and physical illness opened his eyes to the systemic problems in the way America produces, regulates, and consumes food. We explore how decades of misaligned incentives, corporate lobbying, and regulatory failure have created a food environment that prioritizes profit over public health. Jason explains why rates of chronic disease, obesity, and metabolic disorders are worse than ever despite record healthcare spending and how other countries have taken a much stricter, more effective approach to food safety and nutrition. We also cover: - How Big Food and Big Pharma have benefited from keeping Americans sick - The differences between food standards in the U.S. and Europe - Why eating closer to nature is essential for reversing chronic disease - Practical steps individuals can take today to avoid the worst parts of the American food system - The urgent need for policy reform and better consumer education We also discuss the growing role of psychedelics in mental health treatment, healing trauma, and helping individuals reconnect with themselves in an increasingly disconnected world. This conversation is a candid look at why health outcomes in the U.S. continue to decline—and what it will take to fix it. Whether you're a consumer, an entrepreneur, or simply someone trying to live a longer, healthier life, Jason's insights are a wake-up call and a call to action. In this episode, Dr. Dave Rabin sits down with Jamie Wheal, bestselling author of Stealing Fire, and celebrated author of Recapture the Rapture, to explore the evolving role of psychedelics in society, from their historical significance in the 1960s counterculture to their emerging therapeutic applications today. They deep dive into consciousness, psychedelics, the concept of ‘rapture', the neuroscience of courage, and insights from Eric Kandel on how evolutionary learning mechanisms shape all decision-making. Examining the contrast between ancient plant medicine traditions and modern high-potency psychedelics, they highlight the challenges of integration, the risks of dependency, and the importance of preparation and support in therapeutic settings. They also address the commodification of psychedelics, the necessity of a sacramental approach, and the deeper spiritual and communal significance of these substances. Ultimately, they emphasize self-discovery, the acceptance of uncertainty, and the requirement for unity and responsible engagement with psychedelics to foster healing and collective transformation. In this episode, Joe interviews Sean Lawlor: writer and therapist specializing in ketamine-assisted therapy at Reflective Healing in Fort Collins, CO. His first book, Psychedelic Revival: Toward a New Paradigm of Healing, will be released on June 4. Written as somewhat of a primer for psychedelics and psychedelic therapy, he talks about how he decided to write the book, how Michael Pollan was an influence, and the importance of making psychedelic literature not boring: Research and statistics are important, but how does one relate to data points when trying to understand something so rich and weird? He discusses: Studying philosophy, from Nietzsche and Freud to Jung and William James When a clinical frame or license is important (but can you always trust a license?) How context and interwoven culture matter when differentiating between plant medicines and man-made psychedelics Brian Muraresku's The Immortality Key and research into ancient Greeks using psychedelics: Why do we place so much importance on proving this? The importance of community, rituals, shared meanings, mythology, and rites of passage and more! For links, head to the show notes page.

In this controversial episode Whiz confronts some of his detractors, so-called ‘religious' people who believe healing medicines that have been used for thousands and thousands of years are evil or instruments of the devil. He asks how being a better father, husband, and human, and how finding his faith in God again with these medicines is evil and the work of ‘satan'. He tells listeners to check out ‘The Immortality Key', an investigative work written by Brian Muraresku, to see the history of psychedelics and how they predate Christianity. He talks about the big difference between being religious and spiritual and recalls the horrors committed throughout history in the name of ‘god'. He also invites listeners to check out gospels that were not included in the Bible and to reflect on why. Whiz tells listeners that if we saw each other as we are – perfect souls – there would be no more war.

In this episode, Joe interviews Priyanka Wali, MD: board-certified practicing physician in Internal Medicine, MAPS-trained psychedelic facilitator, comedian, and co-host (with Sean Hayes of "Will & Grace" fame) of the HypochondriActor podcast, where they discuss interesting medical issues in a funny (and hopefully uplifting) way. She talks about recognizing and protecting the humanity of healthcare professionals, and how medical school is creating a cycle of hurt people trying to help other hurt people. She believes we need to become more holistic, especially in embracing Indigenous ways of thinking, as their frameworks may be the only way to explain phenomena with which Western science can't come to terms. They talk a lot about ancient psychedelic use: the use of a soma described in the Rigveda; Egyptian culture and mushrooms observed in statues; Plato; the work of Brian Muraresku and Graham Hancock; and Vedic chants, Kashmiri Bhajans, and how singing (especially in a group) can be especially healing to the nervous system. And as Wali experienced first-hand the Kashmiri Pandit genocide of 1990, she discusses how much colonialism has changed cultures, and how much our cycles of oppression relate to our collective inability to experience pain and fear. They discuss the psychological impact of living through major catastrophes; the special and hard-to-describe feeling of returning to your home (especially in a world changed by colonization and constant conflict); the sad case of Ignaz Semmelweis and hand washing; ghosts of Japan's 2011 tsunami, the concept of ‘future primitive,' and more. www.psychedelicstoday.com

Psychedelics are having a moment. There's never been a time in which we've seen more research into, experimentation with, and acceptance of the use of psychedelics—for therapy, for inner exploration, and for spiritual awakening. Of course, psychedelics themselves are anything but new (just ask Brian Muraresku, who shared with me on this podcast his fascinating research into their use over millennia). And pioneering research was done in the sixties and seventies before the use of psychedelics was forced underground. But today, the topic is out in the open, championed by high-profile cultural influencers, researched by major academic institutions, and inspiring a number of popular books, such as Michael Pollan's How to Change Your Mind. Even amidst this explosion of experimentation, however, few people if any can match the experience and knowledge of Chris Bache. Back in the eighties and nineties, Chris took a series of more than eighty high-dose LSD journeys, all carefully documented. He initially wrote about these experiences in his 2000 book Dark Night, Early Dawn, but more recently he's published a fuller account of them and a more mature reflection on what he learned in his new book LSD and the Mind of the Universe: Diamonds from Heaven. What makes Bache's account particularly interesting is that through his journeys he seemed to tap into more than just his own inner world; his intent was to explore, as he puts it, the very “mind of the universe.” Others might call this the collective unconscious or “intersubjective” dimension. Pierre Teilhard de Chardin called it the “noosphere.” At times, Bache even ventured beyond anything related to humanity and glimpsed deeper states and dimensions of cosmos and consciousness. His precise and poetic documentation of these journeys offers a fascinating window into an intensive experience that few may match—but one that perhaps offers valuable lessons for anyone interested in the inner cosmos.

In this episode, I share an original essay titled, "Is Consciousness the Next Paradigm?". I believe we are on the brink of a paradigm shift in modern science. This shift will replace our current, broken ideas of mind-body duality and quantum mechanics with a paradigm based in consciousness. A physics that recognizes everything in our manifest existence, known as the “gross realm of the senses”, is connected through a subtler, abstract Unified Field of Consciousness that serves as the foundation for the entirety of the cosmos. This paradigm shift will be as important for our understanding of cosmology as was the shift from a geocentric to a heliocentric model during the Scientific Enlightenment. This paradigm shift will impact all fields of science – including psychology, medicine, and astronomy – and in turn, the advancements in these fields of study will significantly improve human development globally. In part one of this essay, I'll highlight two phenomenon which our current quantum mechanics paradigm cannot explain: Quantum Entanglement and a Theory of Everything capable of uniting gravity with the electromagnetic force. I'll then discuss two metaphysical concepts, the Holographic Universe and the Unified Field of Consciousness, and how these complementary ideas provide a stronger foundational view of physics than our current one. In part two, I'll provide historical context as to why the exploration of consciousness has been relegated to a “fringe” science, and its researchers frequently dismissed as pseudo-scientists. Specifically, I'll highlight the two power structures who've exerted the most control over the individual's exploration of conscious thought over the past two millennia, first the dogma of the Catholic Church and second the dogma of scientific materialism. In part three, I'll argue that society is currently in the midst of an “Archaic Revival” – where we return to the wisdom of the ancient, spiritual traditions and recognize that mind and matter are in fact one. I'll further argue that this revival is being driven both from the top down and from the bottom up. From the top down in that the body of scientific evidence in support of a consciousness-based paradigm is now so strong that conventional physicists will soon be forced to accept the validity of their models. From the bottom up because individuals across the world are waking up to their true Nature and to the importance of consciousness. To that end, I'll specifically highlight the resurgence in psychedelic therapies and the continued growth of the Transcendental Meditation movement as a simple, practical way for people to integrate higher planes of consciousness into their daily lives. “Are psychedelics the Google Maps to the kingdom of heaven?” - Brian Muraresku Today's guest is author Brian Muraresku. I just finished his book, "The Immortality Key", so it's the perfect time to have him on the show to dive into the fascinating topic of the role of psychedelic use in early Christianity. Brian was raised Catholic just like I was, so we had a great conversation about seeing the Church as a business today and what role rituals have in society. Humans have been studying this question for thousands of years and we are still pinning down an answer. In this episode, Brian and I discuss what was in ancient wine, what they drank at the last supper, and when Christianity became mainstream. He also shares some of the research he came across while writing his book that points to early psychedelic use within the communities that gave rise to Christianity. While looking into the historical records of mysticism and the birth of religion as we know it, Brian found examples of people seeking out the meaning of life by bringing about experiences of “mini deaths” and coming out the other side understanding their true identities. Listen in to learn who Jesus really was and what he wanted, why beer is such a fascinating beverage, and what Brian learned from a near-death experience. The Immortality Key is a groundbreaking dive into the role psychedelics have played in the origins of Western civilization, and the real-life quest for the Holy Grail that could shake the Church to its foundations. The most influential religious historian of the 20th century, Huston Smith, once referred to it as the "best-kept secret" in history. Did the Ancient Greeks use drugs to find God? And did the earliest Christians inherit the same, secret tradition? A profound knowledge of visionary plants, herbs and fungi passed from one generation to the next, ever since the Stone Age?In 2016, Muraresku became the founding executive director of Doctors for Cannabis Regulation. Their work has been featured on CNN and ESPN, as well as The Washington Post and San Francisco Chronicle. In arbitration with the NFL in 2018, Muraresku represented the first professional athlete in the United States to seek a therapeutic use exemption for cannabis. Brian Muraresku, author of “The Immortality Key,” joins Ronan to discuss how psychedelics may have been instrumental to the rise of Christianity, and why despite writing one of the most acclaimed books on psychedelics, Brian himself has never tried them. They dive into the mantra, “to die before you die means you don't die when you die” and why it may be the secret to a lifetime of happiness. Brian's debut book “The Immortality Key” explores pharmacological influence dating back to ancient times, impacting religion and even many of the scriptures we are all familiar with. His book argues that the use of psychedelics may have been instrumental to the development of many modern religions as we know them. Brian, a Georgetown Law graduate, also became the founding executive director of Doctors for Cannabis Regulation. Their work has been featured on CNN, ESPN, as well as The Washington Post and San Francisco Chronicle. Brian has also been practicing law internationally for fifteen years. BenGreenfieldFitness.com/nemu You may have seen me first mention Danny Nemu in my article here on "sobriety", including his writings on cannabis, drunkenness, and the use of entheogens and psychedelics found in the Bible. I even experimented recently with some of the incenses and oils Danny discusses in his lectures - potent blends also featured within the Bible and used by the Levite priests, and the results were relatively astounding. Danny is the author of Neuro-Apocalypse, Science Revealed, and perhaps most notably, the paper “Getting high with the most high: Entheogens in the Old Testament” and a YouTube video by the same name. He is a fellow who has dug into this topic of entheogens in the Bible quite a bit, similar to Brian Muraresku in his recent book The Immortality Key: The Secret History of the Religion with No Name and Michael Pollan in his new book This Is Your Mind On Plants. Danny is a hypnotherapist, activist and author with an academic background in the history of medicine and 20 years experience with the Daime ayahuasca community including an 8-month cure in the Amazon battling a flesh-eating parasite. His fundamental interest is how humans break free of their “mind-forged manacles”, and his research focuses on Drugs in the Bible, Revelation and realpolitik in Science, and the connection between Linguistics, Neurobiology and Cognition. He writes for Psypress UK, the Journal of Psychedelic Studies and Lucid News, has given talks at Breaking Convention on Biblical entheogens and neocolonialism in ayahuasca studies, and is a regular guest on podcasts including Rune Soup and Aeon Byte. His books, Science Revealed and Neuro-Apocalypse, are out on Psypress UK, articles, talks and podcasts are collected on his website, and his inconsistent opinions are to be taken with a pinch of salt on Twitter. Insanely detailed show notes are to be found at https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/nemu including links to all articles and resources mentioned, videos Danny Nemu has published and much more! In this episode you'll discover: -Is Moses' experience at the burning bush an example of an entheogen?... -How the unique combinations of anointing oil described in the Bible would affect human physiology... -Precautions prescribed in the Bible for priests entering the Holy of Holies... -How stigma surrounding drugs in modern culture prevents Christians from having a full understanding of God's creation... -And much more... Darin kommt das internationale Who is Who der psychedelischen Szene zu Wort. Pioneering DMT psychedelic researcher Dr. Rick Strassman shares his game-changing work and contrarian outlook and perspectives. We talk about the supreme value in set & setting and how the “expectancy effect” plays a much larger role in the outcomes we receive from peak psychedelic experiences. This is part two of our important traits of Neomodernism series. We're going to discuss our need to transcend the corporeal (the body). We'll talk a little Captain Ahab from Moby-Dick, some Saint Augustine, and we'll dive into Dr. Roland R. Griffith's research at Johns Hopkins University on psychedelics. Why does it seem like the research that came out in the 1960s was largely ignored? Whereas, today, the research into expanding the mind through psychedelics seems to be gathering quite a lot of steam? We'll have to think about that and try to answer it in this episode. I talk a bit about Brian Muraresku's book: The Immortality Key as well and why, even among atheists, it seems like religious language is still the most accurate language from describing psychedelic experiences. And if you start feeling too overwhelmed by the experience, you need not worry. We're also going to talk about meditation and how we try to transcend the body through mindfulness. It all comes together with a section from Walt Whitman's "I Sing the Body Electric." Can you ask for a better episode? Probably. But, I can't deliver one as of yet. Punctuating the first season of The Heart of Law, Mirena invites the perfectly sanguine and finely enlightened guest, Ilya Lerma, into the show. Our riveting anchor calls Ilya the New Age Lawyer, and the title fits her well. Ilya gives us a backdrop of a picturesque childhood entrenched with philosophy and a keen awareness of others. Nurtured by accomplished and astute parents who lovingly raised her to have a sentient worldview beyond her youth, she saw life through the eyes of Kant, Jung, Hume, among other empiricists and rationalists who later influenced her adult life. Deeply transformed by CC Zane's Spiritual Alchemy, Ilya considers the “material universe [as] a manifestation of the metaphysical universe,” perceiving everyday pressures as mere tools of refinement “into spirit and transcendence.” She views the personal and professional pressure of the daily grind as the “alchemical furnace,” effectively used by the universe to refine her intuition, her consciousness, her humanity. While she acknowledges her law practice as “a little unorthodox,” we know Ilya is as endearing as they come—regularly earthing (removing shoes for one's soles to commune with the earth), faithfully meditating, and gently pursuing vivid connections with everyone. With the soul of a seeker, she understands the intrinsic value of showing trustworthiness, perceiving that authenticity makes for meaningful work, relationships, and existence. Into the deep dive, Ilya leads us through the fascinating world of Trial Structure, a scientifically systematized method of taking, streamlining, and organizing information from plaintive cases, so lawyers know how to efficiently "recognize predictable patterns of … attack [and] anticipate them." Ilya runs this company alongside her mentor and friend, Alejandro Blanco. With a prolific team of seasoned trial lawyers, they prepare inexperienced colleagues to handle the complexities of a case and more. As the conversation continues, Mirena and Ilya discuss the impact women have in the law industry. With Ilya as the current president of the Arizona Trial Lawyers Association—the first woman to hold office in 20 years—she stays at the forefront representing women who influence the “changing landscape” of their profession. They touch on organic feminine allegiances, unique client advocacy, versatile plaintiff representations, all driven by the capable female id. WIth minds in perfect sync, the two indomitable women consider a promising future for themselves and their contemporaries. Ilya bewitches us completely. She loves life. She loves others. She loves herself—inviting us all to do the same. Fearless love “ … it's always there, and there's never any fear that you're going to [fall] short.” That's one transcendent edict bringing The Heart of Law's first season to a sublime close. Psychedelica Lex Episode 020: Six Books Reviewed I took vacation two weeks ago and caught up on a little reading. I comment on each: 1. The Immortality Key by Brian Muraresku 2. Magic Medicine by Cody Johnson 3. Drugs and Human Behaviour by Gordon Claridge 4. Medical Psychedelics by Oliver Rumle Hovmand 5. Moksha by Aldous Huxley 6. Ethnopharmacologic Search for Psychoactive Drugs 1967-2017 by Various ____________________________________________________ Author and host, Gary Michael Smith, Esq., is a decades-experienced, AV rated, attorney, American Arbitration Association panelist, founding director of the Arizona Cannabis Bar Association, board member of the Arizona Cannabis Chamber of Commerce, and general counsel to the nation's oldest federally recognized, 501C3, multi-racial peyote church. Psychedelica Lex is the first book to offer a comprehensive survey of the laws and regulations governing psychedelic substances. ABOUT THE PSYCHEDELICA LEX PODCAST AND CHANNEL President Nixon's enactment of the Controlled Substances Act in 1970 banished most psychedelics to Schedule I, making psychedelics for most purposes illegal. However, as the Congressional Record reveals, psychedelics never got a fair trial and little scientific evidence, if any, was considered by lawmakers. Prohibition was more about politics than public health. Yet, historical record, anecdotal evidence, and scientific studies all suggest that prohibition was an unnecessary and harmful overreaction and that many benefits may be derived from psychedelics. Psychedelica Lex puts the question of psychedelics on trial. Hosted by a veteran litigation attorney, each episode will explore psychedelics from different perspectives. As we explore the evidence together, you - the audience - will serve as jurors. Together we will examine every facet. Applying the rigors of cross examination and the Socratic method, we will seek an objective truth. ____________________________________________________________ The growth, trafficking, sale, possession, or consumption of psychedelics, may be a felony punishable by imprisonment, fines, forfeiture of property, or any combination thereof. In an exploration of the relationship of religion and spirituality to drugs, Allison and JT speak with Brian Muraresku, author of The Immortality Key: The Secret History of the Religion With No Name. Do we need a psychedelic renaissance? The ties with plant sacraments and prayer and mystical experiences – the combination of psychedelics and religion - goes way back – and may be what current western civilization is craving. In the words of our guest, “only something of this scale could heal the alienation from nature, and the loss of the experience of being part of the living creation. Would a popular outbreak of mysticism be able to heal our lost connection to Mother Nature and each other?”
Vox's Sean Illing talks about the the little-known history of psychedelics and spirituality in the Western world with Brian Muraresku, author of The Immortality Key. On today's show we are going to be weaving together a really interesting range of themes including psychedelics, pharmacognosy and medicinal botany, history, religion & spirituality, end of life care, dreaming, mental health and a whole lot more. In this episode, John interviews Brian Muraresku, author of New York Times Bestseller, The Immortality Key: The Secret History of The Religion with No Name. On an average day back in 2007, Muraresku's life changed after reading the Economist's article reviewing the research underway at Johns Hopkins investigating the clinical use of psilocybin mushrooms. Thus, Brian's twelve-year study of a controversial theory was born. The theory positions psychedelics at the root of early the Christian Eucharist, and beyond that, at the root of religion as a whole. Through this conversation, Brian and John explore the psychedelic theory of religion, “graveyard beer” - a psychedelic brew used as a sacrament to commune with the dead 10,000 years ago, the mysteries of Eleusis – a Greek religious, esoteric tradition, literalism, the need for all of us to study the classics, healthy skepticism, Christ as a Dionysus figure, the relationship between blood and wine, the kingdom of heaven (not in the afterlife, but present day), the technology and science that is providing insight into our religious traditions, and the powers that seek to erase those histories – spoiler alert: for the Roman Catholic Church this was women and drugs. Referencing The Immortality Key, Jeff Kripal writes, “Buckle up tight, Toto. You were never in Kansas. It's Oz everywhere and always." BRIAN C. Nick and Brian cover topics related to his book, including the use of psilocybin mushrooms in the present to treat end of life anxiety, how “Mystery Schools” in the ancient Greco-Roman world, such as Eleusis, may have utilized psychedelic beverages, the evidence for the potential widespread use of psychoactive plants in ritual settings in ancient times, and how this may have influenced early Christianity, and how psychedelic drugs may induce brain states similar to those produced in near-death experiences.
