He reflects on how, when drinking, the real alcoholic becomes a person almost unrecognizable from their true self.“I was pretty tweaked out all the time, right? Anybody else? There was no in-between. I'm either using or I'm not. His disposition while drinking resembles his normal nature but little. If we can't be honest with ourselves, if we can't differentiate the true from the false, how do we know what our normal nature was? Did we know what our normal nature was? I mean, lying, cheating, and thieving really is not who I am.”Wayne shares his experience of being extroverted even while tweaking, keeping people around him only to complain about their presence. This behavior underscores the Jekyll and Hyde transformation many alcoholics experience, becoming dangerously antisocial despite being, at their core, good people. For more content, please like, comment, and share. The Kingdom Perspective

Transcript:Hello this is Pastor Don of Christ Redeemer Church. Welcome to The Kingdom Perspective. There have been deep and dramatic cultural changes in the past 75 years or so, unmooring much of what our civilization took for granted. Nowhere is this more evident than in our sense of “self”. In traditional cultures, one gained an identity either by pedigree (being born into a particular family, tribe or nation) or by proving oneself according to the values of your family, tribe or nation (e.g., sacrificing for the greater good of the community). However, in the past 50 years or so, we no longer become a somebody by looking to our family, tribe or nation, but by distinguishing ourselves from them. Belonging to a community is seen as an obstacle to being my “true self”. You can see this in the change of the advertisements for the US military. A century ago, you had a rather stern looking Uncle Sam pointing his finger at whoever deigned to look, saying: “Your country needs you!” The subtext was you had a duty to serve your nation because you belonged to it. Your identity was bound by your duty to tribe and nation. However, back in the 1980's all this changed with a much more consumer/individualistic-driven ad. Join the Army and “Be all that you can be!” we were told. In this new world it is all about you. You create yourself. You are the manufacturer of your identity. This new ethos has not saved our “sense of self” but only impoverished it even more. We were never meant base our identity on our pedigree or performance but on God who created us in His image and redeemed us for His glory. And that's something to think about from The Kingdom Perspective. “Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all. Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.”~ Colossians 3:9-15 (ESV)

Today, I invite you to join me on a meaningful exploration of authenticity, a topic that resonates deeply within each of us. Have you ever yearned to express yourself more authentically? I certainly have. My personal journey has been one of self-discovery, enriched by practices such as meditation, journaling, and the sincere acknowledgment of my emotions and thoughts. Throughout this voyage, I've delved into the depths of self-awareness, embraced honesty and vulnerability, and cultivated empathy—qualities that bring us closer to our true selves. Yet, amidst this transformative journey, I've encountered two formidable challenges: acceptance and mindfulness.  Let's begin with acceptance—a profound endeavor in itself. It entails embracing our entire being, flaws and all, after years of societal conditioning and personal expectations. From childhood to adulthood, the pressure to conform often overshadows our innate authenticity. Can you relate?  Despite the trials, there have been moments of profound clarity—those stolen hours in yoga class where I connected with my innermost self. Oh, the solace found in listening to the whispers of our souls!  However, acceptance is a journey, not a destination. It requires patience and compassion as we navigate the depths of our inner world, tenderly tending to the wounds inflicted by years of conformity. And then there's mindfulness—the art of being fully present in the moment. In the hustle and bustle of life, with thoughts racing like cars on a busy highway, achieving mindfulness can seem daunting. Yet, it is in these mindful moments that authenticity flourishes, as we become attuned to the rhythm of our existence. Each day, I embark on the practice of gently guiding my thoughts back to the present moment. It's a gradual journey—one step at a time—towards embracing my authentic self. I invite you to join me in this soulful endeavor, where we celebrate our imperfections, quiet our restless minds, and revel in the beauty of the present moment. Together, let's nurture authenticity in our lives and illuminate the path for others to follow. BOOKS:

Before, I was just reacting. It was just total reaction. It was self-destructive, and it was violent. I didn't understand why I was doing anything I was doing. I think a lot of people wander through life that way. They're behaving. They have no idea why they're behaving the way they're behaving. Why am I doing, what I'm doing? Thoughts On Breathing Yes, you know eastern religion really focuses a lot on breath. I think there's a reason for that because breath is life, right? I mean, you know, it symbolically represents life and it physically represents life. So when we focus on our breath, and I'm not a meditation expert, it gives my mind a chance to just clearly focus on an activity, and then I can sink into my consciousness.   Bullying Story  Growing up, I was just a really tortured kid. I was a misfit, and there was a lot of bullying. I was never taught the tools of mindfulness or how to understand my emotions or what I was feeling. As a matter of fact, you know I grew up in the South United States, and a lot of it was just the opposite. It was about denying your feelings. It was about hiding suppression, and now I know how damaging that is. But had I had those tools going up, it would have made a huge difference. Episode SummaryHave you ever paused long enough to consider that maybe, just maybe you are living a lie? Is it possible that your outer shell, or your outer identity isn't really you after all? What if all your coping mechanisms that have come to shape your identity isn't the real you? Maybe you've spent your life operating out of your false self based purely on survival, but is that who you were born to become? I hope not. At some point, if you don't examine your false self, the real you will die. Father Richard Rohr writes, “Too much of both religion and common therapy seem to be committed to making people comfortable with what many of us call our “false self.” It's just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, which is going to sink anyway. To be rebuilt from the bottom up, you must start with the very ground of your being.”I'm not sure why it's this way, but your true self is oftentimes hidden and must be sought out and cultivated. Your true self is who you are in God and who God is in you. Truth be told, you don't need to create your true self, you simply need to awaken to the you that you already are. This is the point of real conversion, that moment in your life when you wake up to who you were made to be. As you listen to Heather's story of awakening to trauma and discovering the still, small voice within her, ask yourself what you need to do in order to be reborn from the false self that dominates your life and into your true self hidden all these years under the weight of ego, defense mechanisms, and posturing. Being human, or finding your true self, is a constant search for our divine nature as “children of God,” an eternal journey that will one day end back where it started, in mystical union with our Creator. Thankfully, you'll know you are on your way to becoming your true self when love, compassion, grace, beauty, and truth take root in your soul and become actualized in your daily life. Our choice in life, C.S. Lewis says, is either “to be like God”—by sharing the divine life—or to be miserable.Bio:Heather first cultivated her storytelling skills through video production and editing. By listening to thousands of people share their stories, she learned to listen for authenticity and confront difficult realities. The collision of certain truths with her religious worldview led Heather on a search for clarity and understanding. She prioritizes truthful answers over personal comfort. Heather writes honestly about the power of love, fear, beauty, angst, and courage. Heather's background gives her a unique ability to pull up what is real from underneath the stories we tell ourselves about God and our lives. Heather lives in Atlanta, Georgia with her husband and three precious children. She sometimes forgets to do basic things like put conditioner in her hair while showering or start dinner on time because her mind is busy pondering how the Universe works and why humans behave like they do. When other people's expectations drive our lives, we run the risk of losing our authentic selves, and are subtly steered away from our own unique paths. We're compelled to show up as others would have us, instead of showing up as our true selves. It can be hard to change our instinct to listen to others and we can get lost in the noise. But when we trust that God will show us who we really are, we are empowered to sift through all those societal expectations and find the courage to stand firm in our truth.  This week, singer and songwriter Rachael Lampa shares how she was thrust into the spotlight at an early age, becoming a number one selling Christian artist at only fifteen years old. After a few years of showing up for her record label, her managers, and her fans, Rachael began to feel her own voice starting to diminish. She shares what brought her back from burnout and how she learned to trust her own voice again. After we hear from Rachael, we'll talk with Dove award winning rapper KB who shares his own identity crisis as a people pleaser, and whose voice of approval he was really seeking in his quest to feel worthy.    Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: Lauren Alaina Upcoming interview: Daniel Gil Operation Christmas Child   Rachael Lampa People Loving Nashville www.rachaellampamusic.com “Perfectly Loved”   KB www.whoiskb.com His Glory Alone II   Interview Quotes: “It was a really special thing to be able to grow in my faith and also grow in music at the same time and watch how the music reflected where I was with my faith.” - Rachael Lampa  “I'm turning my back on the thing that I thought I was going to do for the rest of my life. It was one of those first moments where I was able to say, ‘I trust God right now, I trust God a lot. I don't have a plan for what this is going to look like.'” - Rachael Lampa  “When we give gifts to people, we don't expect them to take that gift and be like, ‘Here you go, world. You can have it, too.'” - Rachael Lampa “I got to worship [God] in the smallest ways and not always under sound and lights. That is really what brought me to a place where I was able to say, ‘Okay, if music never comes back, I'm okay. I am loved, I still matter, I still have purpose.'” - Rachael Lampa “I fully trust God, and He has just been honestly blowing me away.” - Rachael Lampa “I realized that this unhealthiness that was showing up in my life was connected to me working for the approval of a voice that I would never hear.” - KB  “I'm not able to even taste the fruit of my labor because everything I do is always incomplete because I need the approval of my father. That created all kinds of problems in my heart, but what I found was it made me ripe for the Father God.” - KB  “God's glory doesn't take a backseat, it doesn't suspend itself in our brokenness, in our confusion; it is a part of how God shows up and shows out in our weakness. There is strength in confessing our fragility and there's strength in owning our need for healing.” - KB  “I've been so grateful for the brothers and sisters that God has assigned to me that make up His church, that helped to hold my arms up, helped calm me to repentance and helped to heal the wounds that I've become so acutely aware of.” - KB  “If God is not holding the leash on my desires, if He's not holding the leash on my trauma and what I'm enduring, if He is not holding the leash on my world, I am utterly lost. And I need to break away from that mythical idea that I have the leash in hand and I'm only going to be as happy as I'm in control.” - KB  ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel!
