With Roe now overturned, the evangelical movement has achieved one of its decades-old political priorities. But for many evangelicals, this isn't the moment of celebration and unity it may have first appeared to be. In the wake of the decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, Russell Moore — a former president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, the policy wing of the Southern Baptist Convention — described the state of evangelicalism as one of “disarray.” He argues that surface-level political allegiances paint over much deeper divisions within what has become an increasingly polarized movement. Understanding those divisions and what they portend for evangelicalism is deeply important, in large part because of the movement's immense power in American politics.Moore is the editor in chief of Christianity Today; the author of numerous books, including “Onward: Engaging the Culture Without Losing the Gospel”; and one of the most visible leaders in the evangelical movement right now. But he has also voiced some of the most stinging criticism of the movement's current direction. He believes that evangelicals' embrace of Donald Trump was a mistake and that the way many evangelicals are approaching the culture wars — with what Moore calls a “siege mentality” — is toxic for the faith. Sometimes, the best defense of the gospel isn’t a better argument but a better story. That’s why the previous episode about Josh Chatraw’s book Telling a Better Story and this episode with Russell Moore both focus on narrative apologetics. Also: after an episode in which your intrepid cohosts dredged the depths of some of the worst music ever produced in the history of humanity, this episode marks a return to aural greatness as Timothy looks at music from Paul McCartney, Petra, and Johnny Cash. The focus of the musical discussion this week is “He Went to Paris,” a 1973 tune from everyone’s favorite margarita-marinated beach strummer, the one and only Jimmy Buffett. The first few moments of the podcast threaten to devolve into total disaster, as Timothy is shocked to learn that the Pixar film Onward was not actually an adaptation of Russell Moore’s book Onward: Engaging the Culture without Losing the Gospel. (Önwärd would, however, have been a great name for a Christian metal band in the 1980s.) After learning in the previous episode that Josh Chatraw’s “inside out apologetics” has nothing to do with the Pixar film Inside Out, this new revelation from Russell Moore is almost too much for Timothy to handle. As we enter this new decade, I thought it would be fun to talk to a few friends and reflect back on what life was like 10 years ago. At the beginning of today’s episode, Dr. Moore and I chat about his past 10 years and I’m not exaggerating when I say that I needed a nap after hearing all of the things he has walked through and accomplished. In 2010 alone, he and Maria had four boys and a fifth on the way. He was the Chief Academic Officer at a theological seminary, a full-time pastor, and was teaching a full load of classes! That’s a lot. We then got to chat about how he managed stress through those seasons and how hindsight really is 20/20. We also talk about the ERLC and their commission to equip churches and families making ethical and moral decisions, which can be anything from adoption and foster care to end of life hospitalization issues and everything in between. Dr. Moore shares with us how relevant and important this is right now as the world is wrestling with racial injustice, especially within the church. I loved his response when I asked him where the hope is in this season. He says, “the hope in it is that you have more people across the board...seeing that this is a problem and that this has a set of biblical answers and a way that the bible forms our consciences and intuitions to be able to bear one another's burdens.”  Friends, I am so grateful for Dr. Moore’s leadership -- especially right now as we’re all wading through rough waters. Jilliene Helmen, the former Vice President of Union Bank quit her job to start RealtyMogul.com in 2013. Her team’s mission is to simplify real estate investment through crowdfunding, allowing entrepreneurs and investors to get in the game. Sitting on the RealtyMogul.com board, Jilliene is responsible for the company’s strategic direction and operations. Today, her company is a leading online real estate capital marketplace with over 73,000 members and 65 employees. Working in financial services as well as technology, Jilliene is no stranger to the male-dominated industries. Having grown up in an entrepreneurial and real estate savvy family, she found that she had a passion for both. After working in the banking circle for several years, Jilliene found it was stifling and decided as a result to become an entrepreneur. Knowing that her company needed investment to be successful, Jilliene went through the process of securing venture capital (VC). She had to work extremely hard, and hold plenty of meetings but as a result was successful in raising $45 million in capital across the company. Jilliene attributes hustle and resilience as the keys to being a successful entrepreneur, especially in male-dominated industries. Even if she doesn’t know the path, she knows her destination and works towards that every day. Through hustling, Jilliene has built a strong network that she can reach out to and leverage to her company’s advantage. An avid reader, Jilliene has found that she reads books based on the life stage of her company.
