In this exclusive long-form interview I talk to World Ballroom Showdance Champion, Strictly Come Dancing Champion, musical theatre star and someone I'm proud to call a close friend, Joanne Clifton. She describes in compelling and sometimes shocking detail the journey she took to becoming world champion - the intense training regime, the extreme physical and psychological pressure she endured and the toll it took on her mental health. From having her ankles whipped in the training room to extreme emotional pressure and financial stress, this is an unforgettable story that has not been told previously in this depth and with such honesty and openness. This is a side of Joanne Clifton that you have likely never heard before. It brings new context to her extraordinary reserves of strength and fortitude and contains a powerful message about courage, resilience and self-worth.--Joanne Clifton's world championship-winning performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Er7tPzt0__kJoanne Clifton on the world championship podium (referenced in the interview): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJVDp5fJh-kJoanne Clifton and Harry Judd on Strictly Come Dancing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7O1juxTB_4Joanne Clifton and Ore Oduba on Strictly Come Dancing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYX6laFZuAgJoanne Clifton in Thoroughly Modern Millie: https://youtu.be/CDQjh4LfZooJoanne Clifton on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/realjoanneclifton

In this latest edition of the mini-series, 'Strictly Speaking', Kevin invites you into the conversation around some of the greatest dances, partners and moments throughout his Strictly Come Dancing journey! This week, we re-join the conversation as Kevin talks to his sister and fellow Strictly pro, Jo Clifton, about her incredible journey to victory during the 2016 series, in which she was partnered with Ore Oduba! You can follow along with Kevin and Jo's story by watching each dance using the links provided in the show notes of this episode! KEY TAKEAWAYS The music used for a performance can make a huge difference to the performance itself. Familiarity allows a greater sense of freedom in movement. In many ways, being in the dance off can be a great thing. It means that the focus is on you in a far more pronounced way the following week. This means that you can seriously impress audiences if you pull something magical out of the bag. The choreography can be used to raise audience spirits, but it must be done carefully. Raising the energy in the room slowly, and building to a crescendo, is a marvellous technique for increasing that sense of audience engagement. Creating a great dance isn't about avoiding mistakes. Every dance that has received a perfect score of four tens in the programmes history, can be analysed and critiqued, and mistakes found. Perfection is unachievable. BEST MOMENTS 'You've got to see this as an opportunity. All eyes are on you, and what you can pull out of the bag' - 4:55 ‘It's not about being clever. It's about producing a great dance that makes people feel something' - 11:48 ‘He's not a mechanical dancer. He understands character' - 22:50 'There's no such thing as a perfect dance' - 33:42 VALUABLE RESOURCES Jo Clifton Twitter - https://twitter.com/joanneclifton?lang=en Week 8 - Rumba - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srC2fPR7gDU Week 9 - Viennese Waltz - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCJ0EC_lOv0 Week 10 - Paso Doble - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cklC8jh5uFM Week 11 - Foxtrot - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYX6laFZuAg Week 12 - Quickstep - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLZe5-8f0hw Final - Showdance - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PMo2Y9y2bM The Kevin Clifton Show - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-kevin-clifton-show/id1475650764   ABOUT THE HOST   Kevin Clifton is a professional dancer who has been performing & competing at the highest level for over a decade. In this latest edition of the mini-series, 'Strictly Speaking', Kevin invites you into the conversation around some of the greatest dances, partners and moments throughout his Strictly Come Dancing journey! This week, it's very much a family affair as Kevin talks to his sister and fellow Strictly pro, Jo Clifton, about her incredible journey to victory during the 2016 series, in which she was partnered with Ore Oduba! You can follow along with Kevin and Jo's story by watching each dance using the links provided in the show notes of this episode! KEY TAKEAWAYS One of the most effective ways to drive yourself to success, is when we are kept back. Determination to upset the applecart, and to prove the naysayers wrong, is what can ignite the fire in the belly. Each couple have their own ways to cope with stress. For Jo and Ore, a set routine of rehearsals, breaks and warmups, depending on their place in the running order, helped to alleviate backstage nerves. Dancers cannot copy dances from original productions, and so the choreography must pay small tributes in terms of style, rather than copy steps wholesale. Early success in the competition can lead to a greater sense of pressure, as we must always be seen to be improving. If the scores are too high too soon, it can be difficult to keep up the growth and momentum. BEST MOMENTS 'You came second! But let's be fair, you did win it two years later' - 7:45 ‘Even if it takes me years to prove someone wrong, I'll keep going at it' - 12:40 'Those spontaneous moments only happen if you're really feeling it' - 37:25 ‘Any time you can play to the crowd, I always think why not?' - 1:16:15 VALUABLE RESOURCES Jo Clifton Twitter - https://twitter.com/joanneclifton?lang=en Week 1 - Tango - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhSUU-LaRfY Week 2 - Cha Cha Cha - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSfcyiZTeoc Week 3 - American Smooth - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yO-uOfq11iA Week 4 - Jive - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSq3Hr62-Ig Week 5 - Waltz - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuX9V0oKVdI Week 6 - Charleston - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4KyEUYFshVY Week 7 - Salsa - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_uT5jVxAlI  The Kevin Clifton Show - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-kevin-clifton-show/id1475650764   ABOUT THE HOST   Kevin Clifton is a professional dancer who has been performing & competing at the highest level for over a decade. The broadcaster, 2016 Strictly Come Dancing champion, and as of January, new dad, Ore Oduba, joins Jo and James in the podcupboard for a breather from this lovely hot weather. Currently hosting the Strictly Come Dancing live tour, Ore spills all the beans on his dance office, the WhatsApp chat, and the love of a good “shant” (that’s shirt-pant with poppers), as well as his obsession with paw paw lip balms, and life as a new parent. And of course, there are some vital topics to discuss: so is it just James who never washes his jeans? Is it just Jo who has to project manage everything? And is it just Ore who loves helping other people spend their money? Plus, we enjoy your listeners IIJMs. This week's episode was recorded on July 9.
