More practice doesn't always mean better results. One of the most common mistakes musicians—and even seasoned performers—make is prioritizing quantity over quality. This month on The Spanish Guitar Mastermind, I'm joined by Laido Dittmar: world-class circus artist/juggler and author of The Art of Practice. Laido shares his journey from frustrated student, spending 8–10 hours a day with minimal results, to achieving significant progress in a fraction of that time, and eventually becoming a renowned record breaking juggler.Today, he helps artists, athletes, and performers double their growth by redesigning how they practice. If you're ready to practice smarter and get more out of every session, don't miss this episode. Now streaming on all major platforms.

Marcus MonroeTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Marcus Monroe. Marcus is a comedian now, but was a juggler for many, many years. I guess he is still both. In this episode, we chat about why Marcus decided to learn magic as a child, and then not long after, decided to be a juggler. He tells me a few stories from his juggling days; including some of his time juggling on various cruise ships. From Celebrity Cruises, to Disney Cruise, Marcus has performed on them all. He even tells a crazy story about how he got to juggle on Late Night With David Letterman, and an even more insane story about the time he was the opening act for the band Cake. Marcus and I exchange Neil Patrick Harris stories. Mine makes me look like a psychopath, his turns out pretty good! Next we turn to comedy. Marcus explains why he decided to get into comedy, and we talk about his "Subway Series"; which is how I found him. He releases videos of him telling VERY corny jokes to unsuspecting NYC commuters. These videos are a ton of fun! Finally, we discuss he previous podcast Talkie Walkie, and his newest podcast The Boy Friends Podcast. Check out his videos on Instagram, and get his podcasts everywhere you listen.

Over forty years ago, I decided to enter a talent show at the University of Maryland. With shaky legs and my juggling balls in hand, I juggled my way to a win! Little did I know that my approach to putting that show together was one of the key reasons why I won that talent show. In this quick, four-minute Pocket Sized Pep Talk I'll tell you the idea I stumbled on, and one of the most important presentation techniques a presenter can follow. It carried me to victory, and I still subscribe to that lesson!
On our last day of interviews at the Meyer Sign Fair History Booth during the 2024 Skagit County Fair, Don Wick and I were delighted to chat with a variety of folks who make the Fair the best annual venue in the Magic Skagit. Our first interview was with the director of Skagit County Parks & Recreation, Brian Adams. We learned about Brian's background and career at Parks & Rec, and his aspirations for the Fair's future. Our second interview was with one of our very favorite Fair entertainers, the beloved Wren the Juggler. We talked with Wren about how he got his start in juggling, and what makes the Skagit County Fair particularly special for him. One of the things that Don and I had been missing during this year's Fair was the opportunity to talk with 4H kids. We finally got our chance when Miss Kylie Fitzgerald stopped by to tell us about the pleasures of raising a very special breed of sheep. Don's and my fourth interview of the day was with Madelyn Loy, who bears one of the most unique job titles of anyone we've interviewed to date: Noxious Weed Coordinator. Madelyn shared her organization's outreach efforts at helping rid our Magic Skagit of problem plants, and why this matters to an agricultural community. Our final interview of the day was especially heart warming. We were joined by another 4H youth who we first interviewed two years ago when she was 9. This was our third interview with a very special young lady named Savannah Pippin, who brought us up to date on her adventures in archery and her aspirations to become an astrophysicist. We plan to continue these annual conversations with Savannah as she continues to grow in grace. I'm still smiling.
Let's be real: the only time we'll be completely stress-free is when we're done and dusted, pushing up daisies, or whatever euphemism you prefer for the great beyond. Stress is part of the contract we signed when we decided to exist. Ok, maybe that's a bit rich, but stress is in fact an unavoidable part of life. It's a healthy, sometimes annoying, at it's worst a debilitating health risk, but ultimately it's purpose is to evoke a beneficial response to our environment. But hold on, since the dawn of time both we and our surroundings have undergone some serious upgrades. Now, instead of casually hunting mammoths, we're perpetually switched on, plugged in, chasing after modern-day lions (read: jobs, businesses, and inbox), and sprinting away from metaphorical bears (deadlines, bills, and Karen from accounting). So, how do we manage all this? How do we keep our sanity in check while juggling flaming swords and riding a unicycle on a tightrope? How do we lead ourselves and be led by ourselves without looking like confused tourists lost in the stress city of life?In this episode, Tiff and I, R. Andrew Pacuccio (we will explain that on the show) are tackling the ultimate paradox: we have all the answers, yet we can't seem to follow our own advice. Why do we keep white-knuckling it, doing things we'd never recommend to a client, employee, or friend, only to smash into that inevitable wall? Spoiler alert: it's because we're human, and humans are hilariously complex.Get ready for a rollercoaster ride of self-reflection, laughter, and maybe a few "aha!" moments as we explore the wild world of stress management. We'll share stories, tips, and a healthy dose of humor to help you navigate work and life without losing your marbles. So grab your coffee (or something stronger), sit back, and let's dive into the madness together!Visit us at:www.theselfhelpantidote.com

Welcome back to another episode of the Underground Society Podcast. I'm not surprised that our guest today, Koji Aiken has become as successful as he has. When Koji was growing up, his dad was a professional Juggler and he saw his dad commit his life to growing his career and going from performing on streets all the way up to big sanctioned events. In our conversation, I was very curious as to what he has learned from having a dad who was in the performing arts and he claims that besides the understanding and the support that came along with it, it showed him an example of what it means to truly “Do what makes you happy” and not settle for a career that is unfulfilling to you. Thank you so much for tuning in, enjoy the episode!Society Selects (Last Updated 6/11/24)Follow KojiInstagramXSpotifyUnderground SocietyInstagramTwitterSpotifyYouTubeWebsite: www.undergroundsocietypodcast.comSupport the Show.
I have always loved art. I began my college career as an artist before moving to journalism, but my fascination has always remained with the visual arts. I love going to museums and when something attracts my attention, I often do deep research into the subject until I have reached satisfaction. One such personal pursuit has been my longtime passion for studying “The Juggler” (aka “The Conjurer”) by Hieronymus Bosch. I have given lectures on this painting to magicians and to museum docents. So imagine my great thrill to meet and to have this meaningful conversation with Dr. Steffen Taut from Dresden who is an expert in ancient magic art. Thanks to an introduction by Richard Hatch at the recent Magic Collectors Expo, we sat down to record a scholarly talk about our mutual passion and more. This should be like listening to a college professor after class talking with one of his students. I know you will learn a lot from this week's episode and I guarantee you'll enjoy it, or you get your money back! View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize View fullsize During the first half of our conversation, Dr. Taut talks about Djedi, magician to Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops), as well as some of the “magic” he created (like severing and restoring the head of a bull, and switching heads between a duck and a chicken), plus how some of the court magicians were less than ethical in their conduct. Dr. Taut also goes into some detail about the Westcar Papyrus which has only been discovered some 200 years ago but tells us so much about Egyptian magic in Pharaoh's courts. The second part of our chat goes into the 1502 painting by Hieronymus Bosch known to us today as “The Conjurer.” There is a lot of symbolism in this painting and an interesting history of what was going on with the Church at the time that led to Bosch creating this painting. La fresca brisa marinera combinada amb l'olor a xurros recién frits des de les parades pròximes creava una atmosfera inolvidable.En: On a sunny day in Barcelona, the Plaça de Catalunya was bustling with activity. De cabells desordenats i ulls brillants, desplegava un increíble espectacle de malabars que deixava a tots els vianants bocabadats. Marta wondered, mesmerized as she watched Jordi spin objects in the air as if he were a nymph of a waltz.Ca: Maria, en canvi, reia a carcajada neta de les burlas de Jordi. "Aquest home es sap captar el públic. Mira quina màgia. Regala alegria a la gent!”En: Maria, on the other hand, laughed heartily at Jordi's jokes. "This man knows how to capture an audience. Look at the magic. He brings joy to people!"Ca: Però la festa va prendre una volta quan una de les boles de Jordi va volar massa lluny, dirigint-se directament a una tassa d'un cafè proper. Everyone held their breath, expecting the inevitable disaster.Ca: Però llavors, una ràfega de vent, com si estigués en connivència amb Jordi, va atrapar la bola i la va portar de tornada als braços de Jordi, que va fer una reverència, provocant aplaudiments eufòrics.En: But then, a gust of wind, as if in cahoots with Jordi, caught the ball and brought it back into Jordi's arms. He bowed, eliciting euphoric applause from the crowd.Ca: Marta i Maria es van unir al goig general, riure i aplaudir a Jordi. After a long and exhausting day, this impromptu spectacle was the perfect uplift. It resembled the spirit of Barcelona: colorful, lively, and unexpected.Ca: Amb pas ferm, Marta va avançar cap a Jordi. Va llançar uns quants euros en el seu barret, amb un ampli somriure.
