When then-triple j breakfast hosts Alex Dyson and Matt Okine decided to surprise Melbourne singer-songwriter Gretta Ray with news she'd won a competition through the station's Unearthed initiative, they did not head to her place of work. Nor did they go to her place of residence. Instead, they ended up at Princes Hill Secondary College, where Ray was a student. A prodigious singer and budding songwriter, Ray could not have predicted the ensuing years of national and international touring, millions of streams and a steady ascent to the top of Australian pop's echelon. Now barely in her 20s, a debut studio album awaits - but not before a quick Bar Bands debrief on her choral background, conquering festivals, genre code switches and meeting her heroes. Gretta Ray's debut album Begin to Look Around arrives August 27 via Ballarat/EMI Music Australia. Special thanks to Mariam Dib. Recorded by David James Young and Gretta Louise Ray. Lonely and dreaming on the west coast, Jono Mata and Sam Blitvitch both aspired to be the guitar heroes they saw on their screens at an impressionable age. With Sly Withers - both men's first in-earnest band - they were able to achieve something far greater. With their open, honest every-man take on pub rock and pop-punk, the band quickly carved a niche that soon became bigger than either could have anticipated. With the release of their second studio album Gardens, the band find themselves among the top of the food chain in Australian rock - which is quite the feat for a band that was barely out of high school when it started. Reflecting on their story over a drink on the patio of a Newtown Airbnb, Mata and Blitvich connect the dots to explain how a fledgling guitar band ended up on the national airwaves and touring the country with Amy Shark. Much like the inner rings of a cut-open tree, there are a surprising degree of layers to Sydney trio STUMPS. Although they boast a confident, extroverted frontman in Kyle Fisher, he had never actually even so much as sang a note on stage prior to the band's formation in the late 2010s. Their rhythm section, meanwhile - bassist Merrick Powell & drummer Jonathan Dolan - had never played indie-rock before; instead, their bread and butter was hardcore punk matinees - making songs to literally scream at the sun in scene stalwarts Perspectives. So, how did all three end up making jaunty post-punk-revival-revival indie-disco? Gather round, and we'll tell you a tale. Charlene Bailey has lived a life of reintroductions. A promising country upstart in the heart of Tamworth, the singer-songwriter got her start as a child prodigy in a family band. She later emerged as a prospective indie-pop darling in the big smoke of Sydney and Los Angeles, helming Tigertown for some prosperous but simultaneously tumultuous years. These days, folks know her as Charlie Collins - a big-voiced, big-hearted and utterly charming artist that sonically composes her past and present to create something well worth investing in for the future. With two new songs out in the world - one of which features her childhood hero Kasey Chambers - it felt opportune to saddle up next to Ms. Collins and her two playful cats in her Sydney abode, discussing both the story so far and what we can expect going ahead. Charlie's new singles "Fuck It" and "Honey Can We Run Away" are out now via Island Records. Produced and edited by Paul McWhirter. Additional editing by David James Young. It's an increasingly-common modern story. A project born out of a bedroom, a dorm room, a laptop, a loose collection of ideas, shifts from the micro to the macro. Few of these stories, however, have carved out such an intense niche as Dylan Baldi's noise-rock vehicle Cloud Nothings. Initially serving up indie pop with a sunny disposition, the band nosedived into Steve Albini-approved dissonance on 2012's Attack on Memory and never looked back. A prolific outfit and a rough-and-tumble live must-see, Cloud Nothings continue to adapt and evolve as a full-band assault. We talk about her journey into and with abolition, why community resourcing and accountability make so much more sense, how prisons simply do not achieve what they purport to achieve (especially in terms of rehabilitation), and the racism and colonial violence that runs all the way through the system – a violence that is entirely in keeping with the colonial project that has wrought trauma, displacement, and death on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples since British invasion.Read Robyn’s great introduction on prison abolition and defunding the police here.Read an excellent review she wrote that explores decolonization, prisons, and the problem of not asking the broader questions here Robyn Oxley is a Tharawal woman and has family connections to Yorta Yorta. Phil Stack has hauled his trusty double bass into just about every RSL, pub, club, theatre and arena you can think of. Abby Dobson has sung all the way from tiny restaurants in Europe to the open air of The Domain in Sydney. They've both managed to notch songs of theirs into the Australian psyche – Phil with “In the Summertime” as part of Thirsty Merc, Abby with “Even When I'm Sleeping” as part of Leonardo's Bride. After all these years, however, both still have an insatiable love of performing – indeed, it's what has brought them together for this very chat in the first place. Ahead of Phil's album launch show in Sydney – where Abby will support – the two spoke openly about lugging PAs, surviving grunge, Paris syndrome and how hindsight in 2020 is still 20/20. Carly speaks with Thursday Breakfast’s own Scheherazade Bloul about Omar Radi, a Moroccan journalist who has recently been jailed on a series of charges including espionage. Omar is an award-winning investigative journalist and human rights activist who frequently publishes articles about land grabs by speculators and the corruption within Moroccan officials. Omar's imprisonment comes after an investigation by Amnesty International which found that his phone was infected with NSO Pegasus software - Israeli spyware that last year was used illegally against journalists, dissidents and campaigners around the world.  We return to Thursday Breakfast's poetry and writing segment. This week we have readings by two poets. First we hear a poem by Jeanine Leane called The Colour of Massacre then we hear Boy Dentata by Vincent Silk. Jeanine Leane is a Wiradjuri writer, poet and academic from south-west New South Wales. This poem was published as part of Fire Front: First Nations poetry and power today, edited by Alison Whittaker.  Vincent is a writer, poet and community organiser. His work has been published in the UTS Writers' Anthology, Voiceworks, Going Down Swinging, Archer and Seizure, among other places. Earlier in the year Carly from 3CR Thursday Breakfast spoke with Vincent about his first novel, Sisters of No Mercy.  Dani Cotton, a casual tutor and PhD student at the University of Sydney and member of the Usyd Casuals Network, speaks with Priya about the recent protests against course and staff cuts and fee hikes at USYD, and the NSW Police response. Kristin O'Connell, the Australian Unemployed Workers Union Acting Communications Coordinator, joins us to speak about the Australian Government's recent cuts to Jobseeker payments and the Union's concerns about changes to mutual obligations for income support recipients.  Robyn Oxley, a Tharawal and Yorta Yorta woman and criminologist and lecturer at Western Sydney University, speaks with Priya about the recent practice direction issued by the Victorian state coroner regarding Indigenous deaths in custody.

Knocked Loose are just what the Colonel ordered: A fresh batch of Kentucky-fried, scorched-earth, brutal-beatdown hardcore to throw bodies off stages to. The band's menacing and unrepentant approach to the genre has cemented them as heavyweights despite only being two albums and a handful of years in. Hell, even Corey Taylor has championed them as the future of heavy music. How did these southern boys send their trajectory skyward? Prior to a show in Newcastle with Jesus Piece, vocalist Bryan Garris and drummer Kevin "Pacsun" Kaine broke down their own personal musical histories and how they inevitably intertwined within a small town that they turned into a global village for hardcore. They may be tiny dots on an endless timeline, but La Dispute have made their time together count. Over 15 years and four studio albums, plus a dozen EPs and countless tours, the band's unique and poetic take on post-hardcore has endeared them to a global audience. Theirs is the definition of a cult following - they may not pack arenas, but everyone at a La Dispute show will scream every last word right back in the band's face. One of the band's key turning points was coming to Australia for a completely DIY national tour back in 2009, and the country has become a second home for the band - quite literally in drummer Brad Vander Lugt's case, as he now lives on the Sunshine Coast with his family. Both he and vocalist Jordan Dreyer - not only cousins, but the founding members of the band - tracked the band's history before one of the final stops on their most recent tour, at the Cambridge Hotel in Newcastle.
