In 1947, after the birth of her third child, Valerie Hunter Gordon, from Surrey, in England, decided she was sick of the drudgery of cloth nappies. She came up with a solution – a reusable outer garment, initially made out of parachute material, with a disposable, biodegradable pad inside. She named it the Paddi and once her friends saw it, they all wanted one, so she went into business. Rachel Naylor speaks to Nigel Hunter Gordon, Valerie's son, who modelled them as a baby in the first adverts. (Photo: Nigel's younger sister Frances Hunter Gordon wearing one of the mums nappies. Our country is facing a doctor shortage of nearly 124,000 physicians in just 2 years and the impact on patient access could be devastating. The problem is especially acute in economically disadvantaged areas, like California's Inland Empire which is comprised of San Bernadino and Riverside Counties east of Los Angeles. The Inland Empire is also now the home of the California University of Science and Medicine, a unique institution built on a public private partnership. CUSM was created to promote health equity by training the next generation of caregivers in their own community by the Prime Healthcare Foundation. The school just graduated its very first class of doctors last month and Chip wanted to learn more about the school and the graduates. Joining Chip is Dr. Paul Lyons, President of CUSM and Dean of the school of Medicine. Then at 18:51 hear our latest Making the Rounds from Paddi Juliano, the Nurse of the Year at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center – a Universal Health Services hospital in Florida. Starting with a conversation about music and movies Marijn and Steve suddenly realise that it is supposed to be a technical podcast with a dose of whisky… not film music. As they realise this and move across to the podcast subject of looking at the Back-to-Basics of data in SharePoint online.Steve pushes listeners to think about how they process data and make it available as data. From a Change and Adoption basis, we teach how to manage documents when we need to decide on the form that the data is stored before just falling into the habit of using excelThe Value of the data we can use every day is reduced greatly when it is stored (and lost!!) in an application like Excel.Statistics around which applications focus on document and which focus on data was taken and it was roughly equal. But we do not teach and explain the management of information and knowledge in the same proportion. We wonder how much data is lost inside the documents we plan on migrating or the documents we are creating and uploading to SharePoint.Going back to basics for lists means looking to keep your data in data format whilst working out how you can publish it as a port and document. The boys realise that they also need to change and focus more on lists and only on documents when it makes sense. Preparing for the future use of the data will become a value in the future.New Microsoft tools mean that you can present list data as Panels and great page data. The famous whiteboard gets a Name: PATTI which gets very rude very quickly, so the boys decide on PADDI as it holds pads of paper. It now delivers more structured divergenceA warning is discussed that whilst there is the value of thinking about content data, over content documents, simply because lists are more granular.Steve surmises down the rabbit hole about creating virtual contracts creating from a bunch of re-usable items which are in fact data defining another blurred line between documents and data. “It's a good job nobody else can here this great idea” To sum up - Don't just focus on the content separate the data at the source, beware of the rabbit hole because more decisions are needed around access control. PowerApps and Power BI are a tool that can turn around your company's perspective on their content.Steve and Marijn consider how much knowledge is lost when Data is stored inside content.0The boys drink Deanston Virgin Oak whisky which is one of the boy's favourite distilleries featured on their Whisky@ease channel on YouTube. No-fuss just great whisky is a great description of the Deanston product. The round-up at the end of the podcast brings out the key thoughts that generate a few thoughts about how to approach the overall contract and data strategy across the change and adoption plans.

Dexamethasone is widely used by anaesthetists in the perioperative period, principally as an effective antiemetic to prevent postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). The molecular mechanisms underlying dexamethasone's antiemetic action are not fully understood. However, because it is a potent glucocorticosteroid, it is has immunosuppressive and hyperglycaemia effects. It is hypothesised that these actions may increase the risk of perioperative infections, particularly in patients with diabetes mellitus, who are already at increased risk of complications. Whether the use of dexamethasone in the perioperative period increases the risk of surgical site and other infections, has not been definitively established. This is an important health priority as in Australia alone up to one million patients will receive dexamethasone as part of their anaesthesia care annually. This study aims to definitively address the impact of dexamethasone on surgical site infection and will be stratified according to diabetes status.

Dr Paddi Lund is the self-confessed "Crazy Dentist" from Queensland, Australia. "Crazy" because he did so many outrageous things in his practice and because his success defies all conventional business paradigms. He built a 'By Invitation Only' business that thrived despite the fact that he locked his front door, took down all his signs and removed his name from the phone book! “My brain works differently to many people's, in that I often see a strange answer that other people don't see. My strange answer for this situation was to get happy. The insight I had was “I'm unhappy!” It sounds simple however many people don't come to that. They think “Oh, I'm working too hard, have too many responsibilities, the economic situation is bad, I'm in a difficult profession …” But what it boils down to is “I am unhappy.” - Paddi Lund There's loads more tips and insights just like this that will help you build that beautiful business of yours into the empire it deserves to be. Hit the PLAY button or subscribe free to hear the full interview. You'll also find the full interview transcription below. If you have questions about how to create a happy business then you'll get this answers in this interview: Why Paddi walked away from his business when he could have sold it for a fortune Why you should put aside time for introspection What caused Paddi to hit rock bottom, and how he came back? How small things affect our happiness Seven standards for happiness in your business How to make your customers feel special by allowing them to do things for you Why his colleagues thought that Paddi's model was arrogant (and why he didn't care) Why you shouldn't see your service as a piece of work (or price it that way) What Paddi was really selling (hint: it wasn't a product or service) Transaction vs Transformation in marketing what you do Why you don't have to run the same type of business as everybody else As a result of Paddi's unconventional business ways: He worked only 22 hours a week yet makes 3 times more than the majority of his colleagues His team loved him, and his customers were clamouring to buy his services But more than that, Paddi loved coming to work and had a rich, fulfilling life as a result All this from focussing on just one aspect of business: not marketing nor advertising, his products, services nor even profits ... but HAPPINESS!!! Business Happiness, to be precise! Here's what caught my attention from my chat with retired dentist Paddi Lund: Put aside time for introspection and ask yourself the question “What would make my business a happier place to be?” Have the courage to implement a marketing idea that may seem crazy. On the surface, Padi taking down the signage and sacking a large portion of his client base seems whacky … but it worked! I love the Dental Bun idea. How can you integrate smell into your business? It's by far the most underutilised of the five senses in marketing, so it lends itself to helping you create a strong point-of-difference. But the marketing gold doesn't stop there, in this episode you'll also discover: I'll show you how to get some free publicity And we go back into the vault, revisiting a chat I had with my speaking coaches Troy & Zara Other resources mentioned: How to use humour to grow your business How to get free publicity How to get earned media coverage Please support these businesses who make this show possible: DesignCrowd is the world's #1 custom design marketplace where, with access to 550,000 designers, you'll get the perfect design every time. If you don't know of Paddi, he's an Australian dentist who became famous in the world of marketing and sales for going completely against the industry norms in order to improve his business.... And the strategies he used in his dental practice are 100% transferable to the Recruitment Industry.... For show notes, podcast updates and additional resources head over to: [2:19] The beauty with referrals is the only cost is your time [2:33] A client that gives you a referral is more likely to be loyal to you, Its difficult for an existing client to give you a referral and then not do business with you and also the person that they give as a referral they tend to stay with you longer as well. [5:54] If you do what successful people do, You can have what successful people have got. [6:12] If your working with clients that you don't enjoy working with thats your choice and you can fire them if you want to. You can be very selective with who you work with. [9:34] One of the key reasons why you don't get referrals right now is you don't ask! You simply don't ask and what we know is if you don't ask your denying somebody the opportunity of saying yes. [12:09] The service you offer to clients makes a massive difference to them, you add to the bottom line, you are literally guaranteed to increase there sales and increase there personal earnings. Its your duty to share this message with as many people as possible. [13:03] People enjoy giving you referrals, people like recommending people, people will like helping there friends out and again if you provide a good service you asking for a referral is gunna give your client the opportunity to help out one of there friends which everyone likes to doing. [14:58] If you want to take your business to the next level one of the things that you've got to make a priority is taking control of everything that you can control and the good news is that you can control the number of referrals that you get into your business. But thats by having a system! [16:56] First of all, one of the things love got to do is expect to get referrals. [17:24] Its also about telling them that you expect them to give you a referral. So what you essentially say at the start of the relationship its that “Hey Mr Client, one of the ways that we grow our business is via referrals. So at the end of this project, at the end of our time together one of the things I'm going to do is ask you for a referral. Is that okay?” And again, 9 times out of 10 they'll say YES. So what you've done is got them to expect that your gunna ask for a referral at some point in the relationship. [20:19] Expect, Ask, Reward, Repeat. [24:26] True professionals know that in order to succeed at sales they need referrals, They also know that when someone starts giving you a referral just take notes and don't interrupt, just listen till have run out of names. Your never know how many leads that your get. For show notes, podcast updates and additional resources head over to:
