Band It About - Proudly Supporting Live Music "Podcast Series"
Edward Pollard (Eddie) joins me in 'The Engine Room' to discuss his musical journey which begun when he was in primary school. Ed fell in love with the drums after watching a school friend play. He jammed with various friends over the years and joined his first band 'Oblong' in the early 90s. Ed met Paul Macleod (who I interviewed in season 1) while they were both working in the APY lands, they put on various shows for the community during their time there. Paul contacted Ed when he was putting together the blues band 'Holler & The Bones'. I first saw Holler & The Bones when I recorded them competing during the ARBA Memphis Blues Challenge, held at The Semaphore Workers Club in June 2018. I then met Ed and the guys after their gig at Club 5082 in August the same year, and it was after this meeting that I became involved in helping them with their Facebook page. I also attended the recording session, and a mixing session of their self-titled debut album at Twin Earth Studios in October, and ended up singing bv's and responses on a few of their songs. In June 2019 the band released their debut album and in July it reached #1 on the Australian National Radio Blues & Roots Charts. The band also competed for a third time in the ARBA Memphis Blues Challenge in June, this time they won their heat which gave them a spot in the Final which was held in front of a Sold Out crowd at The Gov in 2019, the band won the competition, and represented South Australia at the International Blues Challenge which is run by the Blues Foundation, and held on Beale Street, in Memphis Tennessee, in 2020. Currently Ed is involved in a couple of projects as well as playing drums with Adelaide band 'The Hoverchords' which is an instrumental psychedelic surf rock band. Music: Intro "Band It About" written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro "Briar Road" which is the 3rd track on the Holler & The Bones self titled album. Episode #894 Friday, June 18, 2021 marked five years since we lost our friend and namesake artist, Paul MacLeod. This show started as an avenue for talented artists like Paul to get some of the exposure that they so deserve. Paul was a friend and an inspiration and like a lot of people, I miss him and wish he could still be here. I put together a tribute to Paul for my other show, Fly with your Shadow, which I hope you'll check out at flywithyourshadow.com or on the streaming service of your choice. Although that one was the longest episode of the show ever, I had much more left over, and it only seemed fitting that the tribute would spill over onto the show that he gave a name to. Today we'll hear from Andy Maize of Paul's former band Skydiggers, Jason Schneider, Mark Logan of Busted Flat Records, and Lynn Jackson. They'll tell you which of Paul's songs they loved the most and which of the hundreds of cover versions that he could perform were their favourites. I've been super busy with that, so not much time to look up new music or even get through my Record Store Day purchases, so not much on the new side here, but I did find a few. The big news of the week is the imminent return of live music in Winnipeg, as The Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club announced their outdoor summer concert series at Blue Note Park! That lineup of locals is stellar and well worth looking forward to, so I fit in as many highlights as I could today. I hope to see you there! playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-eq6
Paul MacLeod was a super talented singer/songwriter from Kitchener, Ontario. He built his reputation locally and regionally as a captivating solo performer who mixed great original songs alongside a vast and diverse repertoire of covers. He was first introduced to many of us nationally and internationally when he joined legendary, long-standing roots-rock band Skydiggers in the mid-90s. He had the difficult task of replacing founding and high-profile and much-loved member Peter Cash in the band, but he did so admirably, more than holding his own alongside the accomplished band. He brought a new edge, his acclaimed skill on the guitar, and powerful vocals. He would often open for the band, then join them for the headlining set. In addition to two Skydiggers studio albums and one live release, Paul released a great rock album with a band called Hibakusha, and four albums of his own. I took the name of his first CD for my campus and community radio show, Tell the Band to Go Home, which debuted in September, 2002. Paul was a guest on the show, and I got to know him a bit at shows and occasional correspondence. His music, wit, and energy inspired and amazed me. His albums are among my very favourites. Five years ago today, June 18, 2016, Paul took his own life. I was devastated. His music has been a mainstay on my radio show for almost 19 years. Along with John Bottomley, who I talked a lot about in episode 2 and episode 3 of this show, Paul's struggles and death contributed to my desire to further conversations about mental illness, and motivated me to create this show. I wanted to talk to some of his closest friends and get them to tell stories and remember Paul for the brilliant, creative, hilarious individual that he was. I wanted it to be honest and paint the full picture of what it was like to know Paul. It was a treat to speak to others who loved him and who miss him like I do. You'll hear more memories from my guests, and their favourite Paul MacLeod songs, and some of the songs that he covered, on the June 20 episode of Tell the Band to Go Home. Guests: Lynn Jackson - Kitchener singer/songwriter and close friend of Paul's. Find out more about her and find her music at https://lynnjackson.net/ Mark Logan - owner of Encore Records in Kitchener and of Busted Flat Records, the label that released Paul's last two albums, Bright Eyes Fade and Gauge. Mark was instrumental in Paul's career, as well as the careers of Shannon Lyon, Brock Zeman, Matt Andersen, and many more. He's an unsung hero of the Canadian music industry. Jason Schneider - these days, an in-demand publicist through his busy public relations agency, Jason Schneider Media, but a longtime music journalist and an accomplished author and musician. He was one of three musicians responsible for one of my favourite books of all time, and one that I refer to often, Have Not Been The Same: The CanRock Renaissance 1985-1995. Andy Maize - founding member and lead singer of Skydiggers, one of the most popular, accomplished, and longest-lasting bands in Canada. Their friends, colleagues, and contemporaries include Blue Rodeo, The Tragically Hip, and episode 16 guest Suzie Ungerleider. music credits and more info: https://flywithyourshadow.com/tribute-to-paul-macleod-w-andy-maize-skydiggers-jason-schneider-mark-logan-and-lynn-jackson-episode-17

On Wednesday, as we recorded last week’s episode, a mob of pro-Trump extremists shocked the country and the world by breaking into the Capitol building. It’s been a few long days since that violent insurrection and we’ve had some time to assess the political fallout. Elamin calls up Paul MacLeod, BuzzFeed’s Capitol Hill reporter, who was on the scene as the chaos unfolded. Plus, he chats with author and scholar Sarah Kendzior who has been predicting something like this for years. (Fingers crossed, nothing earth shattering happens between our recording time and the time by which you listen to this.)

In this episode I chat with Paul about his multiracial family, and diverse multicultural, multinational upbringing. Made in Japan, born in the USA, and raised predominantly in Australia along with his adopted siblings, by parents who inspired a lifelong passion for knowledge, the arts, celebration of heritage, indigenous cultures, politics, and the Great Australian Outback. Paul has spent his first 50 years quenching his love of the red dusty earth on which we live, whilst gathering the players who together "Shout from the Earth" as one, collectively known as "Holler & The Bones". Paul's fascinating tale was too good to end up on the editing floor, which is why I decided to release 2 parts from this interview. Part 1 begins with Paul's childhood, and goes right through to the formation of the current line-up for his band. Make sure that you subscibe to the "Band It About" podcast so that you don't miss Part 2 of this fascinating tale, which will take you from the banks of the River Murray, to the Mississippi Delta! In this episode of Memphis Type History: The Podcast, Rebecca and Caitlin have a treat for all the Elvis fans out there celebrating this week. They talk about Graceland Too, the offbeat museum of Elvis memorabilia you can't visit anymore because of its closing in tragic circumstances. But you can hear all about it from from people who did see it firsthand on Memphis Type History: The Podcast. Graceland Too is no longer open to the public. However, memories of the eccentric owner of the Elvis memorabilia museum are still spoken of with fondness. Paul MacLeod drove into Holly Springs, Mississippi, in the 1980s dressed like Elvis and in a pink Cadillac. He took up residence in the small town and soon his reputation as an Elvis fan garnered him visitors of his own. He loved Elvis so much his entire home was filled with rare and strange memorabilia. He said to have even named is son Elvis Aaron Presley McLeod. So where did the name come from? The house itself was just as eccentric as the man who ran it. There was memorabilia covering every wall of the house. It changed colors regularly according to various themes: Blue for Blue Hawaii, Pink for the Cadillac, and Gray for Jailhouse Rock, among others. Unfortunately Paul McLeod was found dead suddenly on his porch in the front of his house from a health issues. Two days earlier he had shot and killed a man at his front door. Although MacLeod was not convicted with anything, people claim the stress of the situation caused his death. The death was sudden and just as suddenly his home and belongings were auctioned off. Rebecca only even experienced any of it at an exhibit at Crosstown Arts which is why she looked for people who could help fill in memories with their firsthand accounts. The first person interviewed is Darrin Devault. He went to the museum the first time with a friend who was always looking for the opportunity to take good photos. Only box fans cooled the house in the sweltering July heat. Darrin described the house as being at one time a "stately home." At the time of their visit it was painted in the blue. After that, it was painted "Pepto Bismo Pink. Darrin went to McLeod's funeral. They let everyone at the funeral back to the house for the final tour. Darrin talks about Paul's "photographic memory" and his "wall of fans" for people visited consistently over the years including the Elvis garment you had to wear for your "wall of fans" photo to be displayed in the home. You'll have to listen to the podcast to get the details, though. Second, we hear from Aimee who was a lifetime member. She took one of those middle-of-the-night visits that were apparently very popular among college students. It was the mid-nineties. Upon arriving she was taken aback by the number of items and its location just off a main city street. She also talks about how it was a much different experience in the middle of the night than during the day. Aimee took the trip when she was relatively new to Memphis and was very curious about the Elvis culture that exists. She describes it as a place you had to see to believe and describes McLeod as every bit of what you hear about when people describe him. Rebecca also talked to Emily Van Gilder and her boyfriend Evan Daws. Evan was actually a lifetime member and has his picture on that "wall of fans" you read about earlier and is the owner of several Lifetime Member cards. Evan talks about his many adventures at Graceland Too, and shares what he'd have kept if he could have anything from the collection. Emily had her own unique experience there. Listen to the podcast to get all those details. For full show notes go to memphistypehistory.com/gracelandtoo

We kick things off with a birthday tribute to our namesake, Paul MacLeod, which prompted him to give us a call and chat for the first time in a long, long time. We also played some tunes in honour of ol’ Bobby Dylan’s upcoming B-Day. Surprisingly, he didn’t call us. Oh well. We heard some new music, some timely music, and all kinds of other great stuff!

We love starting our day off with great new music, and this week’s haul was exceptional. We threw in a few requests/dedications for our wonderful listeners, before heading off into “upcoming concert” territory. We finished with a dusty old pile of vinyl records, in honour of the upcoming screenings of Allan Zweig’s documentaries about obsessive collectors!

It’s Thanksgiving weekend, and we here have plenty to be thankful for, including some cool upcoming shows and some great new music. We’re also thankful for the wonderful music left behind by the late, great Solomon Burke, and after hearing today’s tribute, you’ll be thankful, too.

Part 1 of this show was a rerun of the April visit by Dan Mangan on SBFRR, in honour of his return to town this week. Check out that interview if you haven't already (podcast or on the website). The show proper, and thereby this podcast, began around 2:30, shortly after my return from Toronto. I'm back, baby, with great new music (including the rock & roll song of the year) and tales to tell.
