Reformed Brotherhood | Sound Doctrine, Systematic Theology, and Brotherly Love

In this episode of The Reformed Brotherhood, Jesse dives into Colossians 1:21-23, unpacking the profound and transformative truth of reconciliation in Christ. With Tony absent, Jesse takes the lead, exploring the scandal of reconciliation and how God, through Christ, has restored a broken relationship with His people. He delves into the radical message of the gospel, emphasizing how Christ's sacrificial death and resurrection not only redeemed humanity but also brought reconciliation to all of creation. Jesse reflects on the nature of reconciliation, highlighting the transition from alienation to holiness, and the gift of being made blameless and free from accusation through Christ. He explains the implications of this transformation, both in the spiritual and physical realms, and challenges listeners to live in light of their new identity in Christ. This episode also touches on the cosmic scope of Christ's victory, which extends beyond humanity to encompass all of creation. Throughout the episode, Jesse encourages believers to embrace their identity as reconciled children of God and to continue steadfastly in their faith. By grounding the discussion in a Reformed theological framework, he provides both practical and theological insights into the hope and assurance found in the gospel. Key Points: The Scandal of Reconciliation: Paul's message in Colossians highlights the shocking and profound truth that God reconciles alienated sinners to Himself through Christ's death and resurrection. From Alienation to Holiness: Believers, once hostile and separated from God, are made holy, blameless, and free from accusation through Christ's bodily sacrifice. Christ's Cosmic Victory: The reconciliation accomplished by Christ extends to all of creation, as He restores all things to Himself in a transformative and eternal way. Faith and Perseverance: Paul's exhortation to remain steadfast in faith serves as a call for believers to continue trusting in Christ's sufficiency and work. The Joy of Gospel Transformation: The transformative power of the gospel is not just personal but cosmic, changing individuals, relationships, and the entire created order. Questions for Reflection: How does understanding the scandal of reconciliation deepen your appreciation of the gospel? In what ways can you live out your identity as someone who has been made holy and blameless through Christ? What does it mean to remain steadfast in faith, and how can you cultivate this perseverance in your own life? How does the cosmic scope of Christ's reconciliation shape your understanding of His lordship over creation? How can you share the transformative power of the gospel with others in your daily life?

Reformed Brotherhood | Sound Doctrine, Systematic Theology, and Brotherly Love

n this episode of The Reformed Brotherhood, Jesse and Tony delve deep into Colossians 1:13-14, unpacking the Apostle Paul's rich theological message about being rescued from the domain of darkness and transferred into the kingdom of Christ. The discussion centers on the transformative power of God's grace, emphasizing the joy and beauty of redemption, forgiveness, and union with Christ. Through Christ alone, believers are qualified to share in the inheritance of the saints, receiving full access to the privileges of being children of God. Tony and Jesse explore the covenantal implications of the passage, showing how salvation is not based on human effort or merit but entirely on God's initiative. The conversation highlights the sufficiency of Christ in salvation, contrasting the gospel's message with works-based systems of theology. They also discuss how this passage reflects the broader themes of Pauline theology, including union with Christ, sanctification, and glorification. The hosts encourage listeners to embrace the good news of the gospel, reminding them that salvation is a gift received through Christ alone. They urge anyone who has not yet trusted in Christ to consider the beauty of being transferred into the kingdom of light. This episode is a theological feast, offering both encouragement and practical insights for living out the gospel. Key Points: Rescue and Redemption in Christ: Believers are delivered from the domain of darkness and transferred into the kingdom of God's beloved Son, emphasizing God's initiative in salvation. Union with Christ: Salvation is not merely transactional but relational, as believers are united with Christ and share in His inheritance. Covenantal Theology: The passage underscores the covenantal framework of Scripture, showing how believers are brought into a new covenantal relationship through Christ. The Sufficiency of Christ: The episode highlights Christ's sufficiency in salvation, rejecting works-based systems and affirming that salvation is entirely a gift of grace. Questions for Reflection: How does understanding that salvation is entirely God's initiative impact your walk with Christ? What does it mean to you personally to be transferred from the domain of darkness into the kingdom of light? How does the concept of union with Christ shape your understanding of your identity as a believer?

Better Bible Reading Podcast with Kevin Morris

Kevin from Better Bible Reading proposes a new approach to Bible reading in 2025. Instead of following a chronological reading plan, he suggests focusing on a single genre for the entire year. This could be a category from the Old or New Testament, such as the books of Moses, the historical books, wisdom literature, the prophets, the Gospels, the Pauline Epistles, or Hebrews through Revelation. This reading method aims to deepen our understanding and appreciation of a particular genre and its connections with other genres in the Bible. Kevin also offers a six-month split option for those who find a full-year commitment daunting. He encourages viewers to utilize existing resources on his channel for further help.Support the showIf you're ready to dive deep with me, consider joining my all-new membership site Better Readers Academy.

Writings attributed to the apostle Paul make up a large swathe of the New Testament, and have been of fundamental importance in the development of Christian theology. However, there are some serious questions over whether Paul actually wrote everything attributed to him. What texts do scholars think are not as…legitimate as they could be, and what texts do experts think were actually written by the man himself?

  * 2 Corinthians: Paul constructed Second Corinthians as a key for understanding all of the Pauline Epistles, especially for the Christians who doubt the unique teaching that Jesus revealed through this Apostle.  To undergird his controversial Gospel of Grace (Rom. 4:5; 11:13; 1 Cor. 3:10; 15:1; Gal. 2:7; Eph. 2:8-9; etc.), the Apostle Paul realized that he must defend his own unique authority against his critics and against negative comparisons to the other apostles. He does this more aggressively when writing to the Galatians, but in greater length when writing to the Corinthians, beginning with his initial letter (1 Cor. 1:1, 17; 3:10; 4:16; 9:1-2, 17; 11:1; 14:37; 15:3, 9). Then the first half of Second Corinthians (chapters 1 – 7) describes the characteristics of an apostle as Paul builds toward the defense of his own ministry to rebut the attacks against his own apostleship.  The greater eloquence of the other apostles, for example, in no way diminishes the revelation that God has given to Paul (11:5-6). And though the Lord performed miracles through all the apostles for the sick, no one should doubt the Apostle to the Gentiles even though God never healed Paul's own physical infirmity. For through this ordeal God has established that, “My grace is sufficient for you…” (12:9, 11). Also, Paul bluntly recognized that while the Corinthians, “seek a proof of Christ speaking in me”, they should “examine” themselves “as to whether [they] are in the faith”, but regardless, Paul's own authority is beyond question (13:1-6).  The Ten Commandments, “written… on tablets of stone” are a “ministry of death”. Paul uses this shocking truth to distinguish between the two covenants and therefore, between two covenant peoples, for the “covenant” of the law “kills, but the [new covenant of] the Spirit gives life” (2 Cor. 3:3, 6-7). In chapters 8 and 9 Paul urges Paul's converts to cheerfully raise funds to give to the impoverished Jerusalem believers. For as we learned from The Acts of the Apostles, the converts of the Twelve, i.e., the circumcision believers, sold their homes and lands, unlike Paul's converts, those of “the gospel of the uncircumcision” (Gal. 2:7, KJV), who did not sell off their property. For Paul instructs us to test “the things that differ” (Rom. 2:18 KJV margin). Welcome to episode 168!  We continue our summer series on biblical genres.  Today, we will discuss the Pauline Epistles.  You can also find these episodes on Spring Baptist Church's YouTube channel.  Here is a link to this week's episode.Overview of the BooksThe epistle to the Romans is considered Paul's masterpiece, laying out a comprehensive exposition of the gospel of grace and the righteousness that comes through faith in Christ.  In 1 and 2 Corinthians, Paul addresses practical issues within the church, such as divisions, immorality, and the proper use of spiritual gifts. Galatians is a passionate defense of the true gospel, emphasizing the freedom we have in Christ and the futility of attempting to earn salvation through works.  Ephesians unveils the profound mystery of the church as the body of Christ and the believers' calling to unity and spiritual maturity. Philippians is a letter of joy and encouragement, exhorting believers to live in humility, unity, and steadfastness in the face of opposition.  Colossians confronts false teachings and highlights the preeminence and sufficiency of Christ. In 1 and 2 Thessalonians, Paul addresses issues related to the second coming of Christ and the need for perseverance in the face of persecution.  The Pastoral Epistles (1 and 2 Timothy, Titus) provide guidance for church leadership, sound doctrine, and godly living. Philemon, a personal letter, appeals for the reconciliation and forgiveness of a runaway slave, exemplifying the transformative power of the gospel. Significance and ImpactThe Pauline Epistles hold immense significance for Christians, as they lay the foundation for our understanding of core doctrines such as justification by faith, the role of grace in salvation, and the nature and purpose of the church. Paul's teachings on the centrality of Christ, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and the call to live a transformed life have profoundly shaped the beliefs and practices of the church throughout history. Moreover, these epistles provide valuable insights into the challenges faced by the early believers, such as false teachings, moral struggles, persecution, and the need for spiritual maturity. Paul's practical instructions on relationships, ethics, and community life remain relevant and applicable to the modern church. Practical ApplicationsAs we study the Pauline Epistles, we can draw numerous lessons for our spiritual growth and our role within the body of Christ. Paul's emphasis on grace and faith challenges us to reject any notion of earning our salvation through works or self-righteousness, instead resting in the finished work of Christ on the cross.  His teachings on unity, love, and humility within the church remind us of the importance of fostering healthy relationships, working through conflicts with grace, and putting the needs of others before our own. Furthermore, Paul's exhortations to stand firm in the face of persecution, false teachings, and temptations encourage us to remain steadfast in our faith, grounded in the truth of God's Word, and equipped with the whole armor of God. ConclusionThe Pauline Epistles stand as a rich treasure trove of wisdom, doctrine, and practical guidance for the church. Through these letters, we gain invaluable insights into the foundations of our faith, the challenges faced by the early believers, and the call to live a transformed life in Christ. May Paul's teachings inspire us to embrace the gospel of grace, cultivate spiritual maturity, foster unity within the body of Christ, and boldly proclaim the truth of the gospel in a world in need of redemption.

Discovered and published in 1740 by the Ambrosian librarian Ludovico Muratori, the so-called “Muratorian Fragment” has long featured for New Testament scholars as a piece of second-century evidence for a canonical impulse in early Christianity. Challengers to this second-century dating in recent decades have done little to shake a popular conception that the Fragment authentically reflects a remarkably early and idiosyncratic view on Christian scriptural collections that do not seem to have been meaningfully codified, by other means, until the late fourth century.  Stepping into this impasse with The Muratorian Fragment: Text, Translation, Commentary (Mohr Siebeck, 2022), Clare K. Rothschild freshly evaluates the text of the singly attested eighth-century manuscript and its wider context in situ within the “Muratorian Codex,” offering both a neutral presentation of the evidence as well as a novel argument attributing its composition to the orbit of the fourth-century treatise writer Ambrosiaster. The result is a true “critical edition” for the Muratorian Fragment, advancing scholarship and allowing fellow academics who marshal its data to confront the manuscript's unparalleled oddity within the landscape of early Christian writ. Rothschild joined the New Books Network to discuss her conscientious handling of this “lightning rod in biblical studies,” its limited comparative material from prologues and early apologetics, and especially the ways that scholarship might progress beyond deeply held commitments to the Muratorian Fragment's relevance to the question of the New Testament canon. Clare K. Rothschild (Ph.D., University of Chicago, 2003) is Professor of Scripture Studies at Lewis University. Her research interests range throughout the textual landscape of the New Testament and other early Christian texts, from Luke-Acts to Pauline texts and from the Apostolic Fathers to the Muratorian Fragment, and her other major publications with Mohr Siebeck have included Hebrews as Pseudepigraphon: The History and Significance of Pauline Attribution of Hebrews (2009) and The Benedictine Prologue: A Contribution to the Early History of the Latin Prologues to the Pauline Epistles (2023, with Jeremy C. Thompson). She is currently preparing a commentary on the Epistle of Barnabas for Fortress Press's Hermeneia series and serves as General Editor of the journal Early Christianity and the Society of Biblical Literature series Writings from the Greco-Roman World. In her spare time, Rothschild enjoys yoga and playing cello in various small orchestras and ensembles. Rob Heaton (Ph.D., University of Denver, 2019) hosts Biblical Studies conversations for New Books in Religion and teaches New Testament, Christian origins, and early Christianity at Anderson University in Indiana. He recently authored The Shepherd of Hermas as Scriptura Non Grata: From Popularity in Early Christianity to Exclusion from the New Testament Canon (Lexington Books, 2023).
