I had a great conversation this week with Mr. Marc Silber.  Marc is a life-long photographer, best-selling author three times over, filmmaker and host of the Advancing Your Photography YouTube series.Marc started out learning darkroom skills and the basics of photography at the legendary Peninsula School in Menlo Park, CA, in the '60s.  If you are not familiar with the Peninsula School they are renowned for their no grade approach to education and support of student collaboration, positive risk taking, and creativity.  Marc moved on to hone his skills to professional standards at the famed San Francisco Art Institute and has since moved into teaching photography in workshops all over the country. One of the things I admire most about Marc is his dedication to education. Not just sharing his knowledge and experience, but his own continuing education and you will see in his books, his videos and even in our conversation, he has a brilliant quote from an inspirational photographer for almost any situation. But his quotes are not just focused on iconic names like Adams and Leibovitz.  He also makes it a point to learn from new photographers. When I booked Marc to be on the podcast, he shared a list of things that he has recently learned from talking to budding photographers and I thought that would make for a great conversation and provide some excellent teaching opportunities.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -LinksWebsite URL:https://www.silberstudios.com/https://marcsilber.smugmug.com/Instagram URL:https://www.instagram.com/marcsilber Facebook URL:https://www.facebook.com/marcosilberYouTube URL:https://www.youtube.com/marcsilberTo purchase Marc's book Advancing Your Photography: Secrets to Making Photographs that You and Others Will LoveVisit: https://www.advancingyourphotography.com/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -TOGCHAT ResourcesShow Website: https://togchat.comEpisode Web Page:  https://www.joeedelman.com/marc-silberMy Website & Portfolio:  https://www.JoeEdelman.comDon't forget to check out THE LAST FRAME LIVEWednesday evenings at 6:00PM ET US on YouTube!Visit:  http://lastframe.live for past episodes.Calendar of upcoming Live-Online Presentations & Speaking Events:https://www.joeedelman.com/edu/I would love to be your PHOTOGRAPHY MENTOR! https://www.joeedelman.com/mentoring-for-photographers/- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -FTC Disclosure: No sponsors have paid for inclusion in this video.  I am an Olympus Visionary photographer, a Delkin Image Maker, a TetherTools Pro and a StellaPro Champion of Light.  These companies do provide me with various pieces of gear that I frequently discuss or mention, however all words and opinions are my own, and I was not asked to produce this podcast.Support the show (https://paypal.me/joeedelman)

Hello everyone, today I am back with another guest on the Business of Dance Podcast. In this episode I will be interviewing and leading a transformative conversation, specific to studio values, with the one and only Melanie Gard. Melanie is the Principal Director of Peninsula School of Dance in South Victoria, here in Australia. The School has serviced the Mornington Peninsula for over 55 years and produced some of Australia’s finest dancers, teachers and choreographers. Formerly Rosebud Ballet School, which was founded in 1961 by Miss Sandra Allan and stands today as one of the longest established Cecchetti schools in Victoria. The school commenced with 23 students and a Pianist at the Rosebud Memorial Hall and is now thriving in a beautiful new premises in Rosebud West. The faculty at Peninsula School of Dance believes that nothing is more joyful than watching a young child explore the world of music and movement with pure delight and carefree abandon. When this is nurtured in a loving environment by highly qualified staff, students will go on to derive many benefits from learning the art of dance. As the Director of Peninsula School of Dance, Melanie is not interested in just churning out “the best” dancers, but is very passionate in helping kids reach their full potential. She believes that dance is more than just a series of movements, but rather, dance can help us cross bridges in life. All of the students at Peninsula School of Dance have their own unique needs for expression, and have the support, guidance and encouragement from their teachers. Through their classes, students gain life skills and a solid foundation for adulthood. Melanie believes that dance kids have a strong work ethic, are committed and present themselves with confidence and humility. PSD is passionate about churning out decent, well-rounded human beings who go on to have happy, healthy and productive lives. And although it may not be the ultimate goal, but if students choose to take on dance professionally, PSD will give them the support they need, and will be the first ones to cheer them on from the wings of the stage!   Melanie can proudly trace the roots of her training directly back to Maestro Cecchetti himself. She trained for over 25 years with Miss Lorraine Blackbourn OAM. Under the guidance of Miss Blackbourn OAM (Fellow, Senior Examiner and Life Member of Cecchetti Ballet Australia) Melanie obtained her Advanced Certificate with distinction, Associate, Associate Diploma and Licentiate Status with distinction. Melanie also is holder of a Cert IV in Dance Teaching & Management and has a Bachelor of Arts in Disability Studies (Deakin University) and is an affiliate member of Australian Teachers of Dance (ATOD). In July 2006 Melanie took over the direction of the Rosebud School of Ballet from its founder Miss Sandra Allan. She is committed to continuing the traditions of high quality dance tuition and instilling a love of dance in students that has been so carefully nurtured by Miss Allan over the last 55 years. Under Melanie’s direction the school has grown to cater for over 400 students each week at beautiful new premises in Rosebud West. Lucas Deranian poses as their uncle in order to get the kids into the clutches of Deranian's megalomaniacal boss, evil millionaire Aristotle Bolt, who wants to exploit them. Jason, a cynical widower, helps Tia and Tony "escape to witch mountain," while at the same time Tia and Tony help Jason escape the pain of the loss of his wife.○ Film Trivia - IMDB■ The character of Tia in the flashback sequences was played by Kim Richards' real-life younger sister Kyle Richards.■ Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann, who play the children in this movie and in Return from Witch Mountain (1978), appeared in a scene in Race to Witch Mountain (2009). Eisenmann is "Sheriff Antony" in the bar, and Richards is "Tina" the waitress. In this movie and its 1978 sequel, their names were similar: "Tony" and "Tia", respectively.■ At one point during the fight scene between Tony and Truck, Dermott Downs punched the bat so hard, it hit Ike Eisenmann. In some scenes, despite the make-up department's best efforts, you can see a greenish bruise under his left eye.■ Knowing that it was an integral part of the story, Ike Eisenmann (Tony) bought a harmonica and taught himself to play it, unaware that he would be dubbed in the end by professional harmonica player Tommy Morgan.■ The primary cat who portrayed Winky was temperamental and difficult with which to work, particularly for Ike Eisenmann (Tony), who sustained numerous cuts and scratches from the feline.■ The Pine Woods Orphanage was actually Peninsula School of Creative Education in Menlo Park, California. The secluded sixty-room mansion was built in 1880 and converted into a school in 1925. There are countless stories of hauntings in the mansion, which were played up in the original press materials for this movie.■ The marionettes from the playroom sequence continue to be used for performances at the Bob Baker Marionette Theater, which has been designated as a historic landmark in Los Angeles, California.■ The name of the mysterious item that Tia carried around, which contained a map, was a "star case". Tia's star case, which housed the map to Witch Mountain, had an additional purpose in the novel. In Key's novel, Tia was mute (but communicate telepathically with Tony) and carried pencils and paper in the star case to write notes to people.■ In one scene, Tony and Tia go on an outing to see the movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937).● Segment: News/Announcements “The Newsies Banner”○ New Jim Henson series “earth to Ned” coming to Disney +○ Rise of Skywalker Ticket Sales prove fan boycott to be empty threat■ When tickets for The Rise of Skywalker went on sale this past Monday, media outlets were quick to publish stories that the film’s pre-sales outpaced Avengers: Endgame for its first hour on Atom Tickets. Rebecca and Ross continue their discussion on teaching. This episode focuses more on workshops, and the intense and highly focused personal interaction that takes place during a workshop. Ross and Rebecca clash over minimalism. During the discussion they shockingly confuse the work of one color field minimalist with another. The piece Ross was thinking of was "Red, Yellow, Blue II" by Ellsworth Kelly which can be seen at the Milwaukee Art Museum (http://collection.mam.org/details.php?id=8007), and not "Who's Afraid of Red, Yellow, and Blue IV" by Barnett Newman. It hangs at the Berlin Nationalgalerie and sadly, Ross has never seen it in person. ** The Messy Bulletin Board! ** James Scherbarth: James Edward Scherbarth will be at Peninsula School of Art in beautiful Door County, WI this June. Jim will be offering an introduction to Abstract Painting with Oil & Cold Wax Medium utilizing his Process-Purpose-Passion approach to meaningful abstract painting. The class is June 11 – 14, 2018. Complete details and registration are available through both Jim's website: www.jamesedwardscherbarth.com and the school's website : www.peninsulaschoolofart.org see their workshop page. Translating her mastery of technique, composition, and design into an accessible format, Mason Steeves helps students nurture and develop their own creative voice. She also accepts students for her online art mentoring program which offers honest, constructive, one-on-one feedback to help students and professional artists alike move their work forward. Peninsula School of Dance Website: http://peninsuladance.com.au/   For more Business Of Dance please, like us on Facebook and follow us on Instagram @claireosheacoaching.
