Book Vs. Movie: Escape to Witch MountainThe 1968 Children's Sci-Fi Novel Vs the 1975 Disney ClassicIf you grew up watching Disney movies or browsing old-school sci-fi paperbacks, chances are Escape to Witch Mountain is somewhere in your memory. But did you know the 1975 Disney movie is very different from the 1968 novel it's based on? Let's take a look at how Alexander Key's book compares to its big-screen adaptation. Alexander Key's Escape to Witch Mountain is a surprisingly serious story for a children's book. It follows orphaned siblings Tony and Tia, who possess strange psychic abilities — Tony can move objects with his harmonica music, and Tia communicates with animals and speaks telepathically. As they dodge sinister adults who want to exploit them, they slowly uncover the truth: they're aliens stranded on Earth. The book delves into deeper themes, including prejudice, the fear of outsiders, and the desperate search for a sense of belonging. There is a strong sense of melancholy running through the story, and while the ending offers hope, it is also mysterious and bittersweet. It feels less like a fairy tale and more like a poignant sci-fi fable. The 1975 Disney adaptation is much lighter, precisely what you'd expect from a family-friendly studio in the '70s. Between the play and the film — did we prefer one over the other? Have a listen to find out! In this episode, the Margos discuss:Disney live-action films of the 1970s The differences between the book and the movieThe cast includes: Eddie Albert (Jason O'Day,) Ray Milland (Aristotle Bolt,) Donald Pleasence (Lucas Deranian), Kim Richards (Tia Malone,) Ike Eisenmann (Tony Malone,) Walt Barnes (Sheriff Purdey), Reta Shaw (Mrs Gerindley and Denver Pyle as Uncle Bene.Clips Featured:“RV scene”Escape to Witch Mountain TV Ad Escape to Witch Mountain 1975 trailer“Marionette Scene” Music: Johnny Mandel theme to Escape to Witch MountainFollow us on the socials!Join our Patreon page “Book Vs. It's a simple enough show this week, kids. We're just looking at a bunch of movies from half a century ago. 1975 was a game-changing year in film. Early 70s trends like blaxploitation and dystopian sci-fi were about to be swept aside, as a certain giant Spielbergian shark ushered in the blockbuster era. But meanwhile, the year still offered some genuine classics (Dog Day Afternoon, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), some cult classics (Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Rocky Horror Picture Show), some Disney for the kids (Apple Dumpling Gang, Escape to Witch Mountain), giant spiders, crazy mamas, blazing stewardesses, switchblade sisters, and plenty of Pam Grier. So pop in a Glen Campbell 8-track and cruise over to your local ugly 1970s movie theater. And grab a big box of Raisinets, even though they're lousy. The Flopcast website! The ESO Network! The Legend of Hell House (1973), Hausu (1977), The Abandoned (2006) In older small towns, there is usually some old house on the outskirts of town, maybe someone lives there, maybe not. But it is one that young kids dare themselves to go up to. And if you do dare to enter this dwelling, you'll find creaking boards, dust covered items from furniture to knick-knacks, and a lot of cobwebs. And any noise, no matter how small it might, gets the mind racing. There is nothing better for the Halloween season than sitting down with a nice Haunted House movie. Which is why we decided to tackle 3 of our favorite scary movies about demented dwellings, as well as ones that we feel that need more attention. Going back to the very beginning of cinema, with Georges Méliès' The House of the Devil (1896), it shows how important this sub-genre is, and why filmmakers continue to go back to it. When done correctly, can be highly effective, and damn scary.  Films mentioned in this episode: The Abandoned (2006), Aftermath (1994), Amityville Horror (1979), The Changeling (1980), The Chooper (1971), Color Out of Space (2019), The Conjuring (2013), Creepshow (1982), Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (1974), Dust Devil (1992), Dracula (1931), Escape to Witch Mountain (1975), The Evil (1978), Fletch (1985), Frankenstein (1931), Genesis (1998), The Ghost of Sierre de Cobre (1964), Hardware (1990), The Haunting (1963), Hausu aka House (1977), The House of Clocks (1989), The House of the Devil (1896), The House on Haunted Hill (1959), The House that Dripped Blood (1971), Ice from the Sun (1999), Infinity Pool (2023), The Innocents (1961), Jaws (1975), The Legend of Hel House (1973), The Old Dark House (1932), Paranormal Activity (2007), Pet Sematary (1989), Poltergeist (1982), Possessor (2020), Salem's Lot (1979), Scrapbook (2000), The Shining (1980), Stir of Echoes (1999), Subconscious Cruelty (2000), Tennessee Gothic (2019), Terrified (2017), Twin of Evil (1972), The Uninvited (1944), The Watcher in the Woods (1980), The Woman in Black (1989)

Carla Gugino Interview: From Spy Kids to Playing Verna in The Fall of the House of Usher

Collider Conversations

Carla Gugino has been quietly amassing one of the most diverse bodies of work in Hollywood, and it's about time that's recognized. She's got a disaster movie in San Andreas, loads of family-friendly adventure films including Race to Witch Mountain, Night at the Museum, and the Spy Kids movies, and she's currently soaring in the horror space with projects like Gerald's Game and The Haunting of Hill House. We'd be here all day if I listed everything, but do give her lengthy filmography a quick scan. I'd be willing to bet that in almost all cases, consecutive projects fall in different genres.Just recently, Gugino got the opportunity to show off a good deal of her seemingly limitless range in a single project, The Fall of the House of Usher. The stellar new Netflix series from Mike Flanagan and the “Flanafamily” focuses on Roderick and Madeline Usher, the extremely wealthy and powerful brother-sister duo pushing Fortunato Pharmaceuticals up and up while leaving a trail of dark secrets in their wake. They think they are untouchable, but when their heirs start dying one by one, they're forced to revisit past choices and reckon with Gugino's character, Verna, or rather, “The Raven.”While Verna is often seen in human form, she's not. As Gugino has explained in the past, “She's not the devil. She's not even evil.” She added, “You could say she's the executor of fate or the executor of karma.” Just before their death, each Usher sees a manifestation of Verna, and each version is different. It's a one-of-a-kind challenge and Gugino absolutely soars while tackling it, so much so that she was just honored with a Critics Choice Nomination for Best Actress in a Limited Series. In honor of that accolade, the success of The Fall of the House of Usher, and everything Gugino's accomplished in film and television thus far, she joined me for a Collider Ladies Night conversation and offered up a closer look at how she did what many strive to do in Hollywood — avoid being “boxed in” and build a career with a wealth of unique creative opportunities. Dennis is joined via Zoom by Dion Labriola, the filmmaker and the subject of the documentary Dear Ike: Lost Letters to a Teen Idol, which is screening on World Animation Day on PBS SoCal and is also available for streaming on PBS.org. The movie documents Dion's teenage obsession with the child actor Ike Eisenmann from Escape to Witch Mountain and also a Doublemint gum commercial that was ubiquitous is the late 1970's. As a teen, Dion had a vision for an animated movie that he wanted to make and he was determined to convince his iold Ike to be one of the voices. In fact, he was so determined that he spent much of his teen years trying to track Ike down. Dion talks about what it was like to eventually be face-to-face with his teen idol, how his intense focus on the project related to his being a closeted gay teen, his attempt to get Larry Wilcox from CHiPs to help him get to Ike and the art teacher Pat Bishop who gave him a safe haven in school. Other topics include: that time Geraldo Rivera came to Dion's hometown of Akron, Ohio to chase after a pimp, Battle of the Network Stars-era cuties like Mike Lookinland, Gregory Harrison and Willie Aames, the fig gelato Dion had on his 30th birthday that he still dreams about and that time the comedian Carrot Top visited Dion in his deejay booth in a Chicago nightclub. www.dearike.com

Can you believe it peep's? Six more 70's movie reviews for you. 4 from 1975, one 1978 sequel to a 1975 film, and one 1980 film that's just there to bring some fun random chaos, and that's not sayin anything about the film itself, we'll get there. Starting off our 4- 75's in alphabetical order we have Disney's (Escape to witch mountain 1975). I'm sorry but give me just 25 million dollars and I know that I could make an amazing reboot of this shit, I think the story is pretty great and timeless, and though I've never directed nothing, I am one hundred percent sure of it. Damn it Dominic, stop casting an imaginary film in yer head and get it together, you've got to vacuum soon. Ok moving on to (In Celebration 1975) Seriously why is Oliver Reed NOT in this. I don't normally complain about casting but……… Here we DO have the annoying artist from An Unmarried Woman, the principal of Rushmore academy in Rushmore, and three other actors from other Lindsey Anderson movies and that's it. Yes 70's film fans it's yet another way to loyal to the confinements of a play movie, I usually for some reason really love these, do I here? You'll just have to wait and find out. Mystique lure, 5 points! Next up is (Mackintosh and TJ 1975) and omg as I write this we just watched the movie Cold Turkey last night, and although I may like much of both of these, they and many other films that even in the 70's should of known better. There are both suspiciously 99.9 percent white people only movies. I know I know the “of the time” BS but we should notice and mention this poop BECAUSE it's noticeable, I mean IS that what you wanna say, I don't think so, I hope not. Here we have Roy Rogers in his last movie, and again, lots to dig here especially the fact that ROY has got skills, but also it's fun and mostly light, way too bad it's mad white. GARAK of DS9 is here as well. Onward we go to review (Shampoo 1975) and like In Celebration, here we have a director I really like, making a film that, wellllllllllllllll I'd rather not say. I will say that some actor greats are here doin great work, Julie, Christie, Goldie Hawn, Jack Warden, Lee Grant, and Carrie Fisher to name a few. I left out Warren Beatty not because his acting is bad here, its great ish (he always seems to play so clueless) but because I want to point out that his character alone is why this doesn't get a higher rating, from me, lets see what the others say. This is taking way to long, next up to bat is the sequel (Return to Witch Mountain 1978) and guess what…………… it sucks HA! Betty Davis and Christopher Lee don't suck, buuuuuuuuuut. Moving on (finally) to (Touched by Love 1980) gawd that is such a basic ass title I guess I can't say it enough, it's so very free box. Here we have Diane Lane in her 2nd film ever, also older Kunta from roots is here and great character actor with 150 credits Mary Wickes. This one took all of us awhile to figure out that it takes place in I think the late 50's. That was funny n fun journey, as we slowly gathered context clues. It might of even said the year, but this one is sadly only available on VHS and I started it like 45 seconds too late and and did not wanna get up off my butt to rewind it, til the end. Were silly. If you're interested in the history of the treatment of the developmentally disabled it's quite a worthwhile watch, although this place seems like the best ever for the 50's or 60's. Longest episode synopsis ever, apologies and thanks so much for listening.

Actors in Conversation: Slice of Life with Margie Haber

EP. 49 Jackson KellyActorFor a young guy, Jackson has been very busy as a series regular in “Lucky Hank” with well-known actor Bob Odenkirk from “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” and his new series for Disney, “Witch Mountain” starring Bryce Dallas Howard, as well as the Oscar-nominated short, “My Year of Dicks,” streaming on Hulu and many other productions soon to be released. Margie and Jackson talk about what it was like working with Bob Odenkirk and how he got the part, as well as his first feature film and WItch Mountain.Margie and Kelly recall the first time they met when he was just 18 starring in the movie, “Hard Miles” with her student, Richard Gunn.  Ironically, the film was about an anorexic boy, while Kelly was keeping his own secret that he, too, was suffering from the same disease. Most rewarding is that Jackson decided to use this podcast as a way to “out“ himself and share his eating disorder.  Margie remembers the time that she kindly asked if he had an eating disorder and Jackson bravely outed himself about his challenges and setbacks over the past four years.  If anyone has an eating disorder or knows someone suffering from it, please share this podcast with them.  It is inspiring, as Kelly truly "F*cked his comfort zone!"

Continuing on our journey into the Spookyville, this week we watched Escape to Witch Mountain from 1975.  Kids with spooky powers is the theme of this Disney movie - telekinesis, mind reading, telepathy - as we follow orphans Tony and Tia Malone on a journey with many old man friends, to find the answer behind their strange powers. Where are they from? Why does Tony need to play a harmonica to make things levivate? Why does Tia carry around that cool star purse? All questions that are mostly answered though to be honest we were underwhelmed that they were just ... SPOILER ALERT ...  aliens and not some cool pint sized witches! We talk about 70s era Disney post the death of Walt Disney and how they tried to do some wacky shit, the terrible sci fi effects, and why are there so many old men in this?
