Lew Bryson is on the show this week. He's a long-time writer in the beer and whisky space, a voice of reason, and honestly just a force of good and positivity in an otherwise dreary world.I've been fortunate to call Bryson a friend for the better part of 20 years now. As a writer starting off in the beer space he was one of a few that was generous with his time, advice, and expertise. That's not a unique to me experience. Lew has helped so many better understand drinks and culture. He's kind and intelligent with the kind of resume that can only come with being among the very best. He was managing editor of Whisky Advocate magazine for 20 years. He is the author of Tasting Whiskey, and Whiskey Master Class, and writes a column for Craft Spirits Magazine. His work has appeared in countless publications, including a long stint in All About Beer. Bryson is a Kentucky Colonel, and a member of The Order of The Writ, an honorary association of the bourbon industry. He lives in central Pennsylvania, which is the topic of his podcast, “Seen Through A Glass." – a show you should tune into regularly. A few months back we were approached by Rich Colli of Varga Bar to do an event for Philly Beer Week. It was great fun, pouring and talking about whisky and beer. Before all that we sat down at Victory Brewing in Philly, to talk about writing, careers, home bars, and more. On this episode of Out d'Coup LIVE, I am thrilled to welcome Erin Wallace to the program. We'll be talking about craft brewing's reckoning in the wake of the flood of stories about misogyny, racism, sexual harassment and assault in the craft brewing industry. The catalyst for the latest round of stories follows an Instagram post by Brienne Allen, a production manager and brewer at Notch Brewing in Salem, MA. Hundreds of women in the industry responded by telling their experiences of sexism and harassment. The attention has led to the resignation managers/owners at several well-known breweries, Tired Hands being perhaps the most noteworthy locally. Erin Wallace is one of the Philadelphia region's premier beer experts. The founder and longtime owner of the renowned beer-centric bar and restaurant, Devil's Den, just south of Washington Avenue in South Philadelphia, Wallace is a fixture on Philadelphia's ever-growing beer scene. Wallace is a self-taught beer connoisseur and has an extensive knowledge of local and imported craft beers. Former long time board member of Philly Loves Beer and Philly Beer Week, Wallace is also the regional founder & co-leader of the Philadelphia chapter of the Pink Boots Society — a non-profit organization with international membership which supports women working in the brewing profession, especially in creating craft beer. Erin attended Baltimore School for the Arts, and Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia. Her love for beer developed from her time as a server and bartender in various bars and restaurants in Philadelphia. She opened the Devil's Den in 2008. ‘The Den' is known for its excellent and diverse array of craft beer, curated by Wallace, as well as a dynamic events schedule. She is noted as one of Philadelphia's top craft beer bar owners. Devil's Den has won accolades from multiple publications and has appeared in Philadelphia magazine and on Foobooz's Top 50 Bars list multiple times. Looking for resources? This episode is an audio recording from our virtual event, A Love Letter to Lagers, held on June 8th, 2021, as part of Philly Beer Week. Our guests for this happy hour panel were Jack Hendler, Co-Owner and Brewer at Jack's Abby in Framingham, Massachusetts, and Ashleigh Carter, Co-Owner and Brewer at Bierstadt Lagerhaus in Denver, Colorado, breweries known for producing amazing, award-winning lagers. We talk all things lager, from the technical, to the historical, and why it's just so good. Plus, we dive into the history and culture of the two breweries our guests represent, and some of their favorite lagers, while sipping on a few of them. Do you love Beer Busters? Of course you do! Just in time for Philly Beer Week 2021, we catch up with Executive Director of Philly Loves Beer (the organization behind beer week), Christina Dowd. At the start of the show, we address the ongoing wave of reports of sexism and harassment in the beer industry. The outpouring of stories was sparked by an Instagram post by Brienne Allan, production manager at Notch Brewing in Salem, Massachusetts – and has sadly reached into all corners of the industry, including Philly Loves Beer. Lightening the mood after a difficult, bust necessary discussion, we go on to talk about this year’s Philly Beer Week and how it will be different this time around. As COVID restrictions begin to ease, this year’s celebrations will be a combination of in-person and virtual events – including our free Love Letter to Lagers Virtual Happy Hour, more info here. Dan was absent from the beginning of the episode but was able to join us just in time for the Happy Fun Time Game, this time a mash-up called, Is There Weird in My Beer? We sipped a few brews throughout, but the focus this time around was more on the topics at hand than the liquid in our glasses. Do you love Beer Busters? Of course you do! Philly Beer Week... It's Essential Living in Atlanta I can tell you it's not an easy task to host a great beer week, but Philly Beer Week has it down pretty good. A lot of this is thanks to Philly Loves Beer and the efforts of Executive Director Christina Dowd. She works with local brewers and bars to promote beer across Philadelphia and much of her time is spent coordinating the events of Philly Beer Week. Dowd and Varga Bar owner Rich Colli joined us on the show to talk about what it takes to make a great beer week and share some of the fun things they've got planned for this year. The theme this year is "It's Essential" and after being locked up for over a year some good beers with good friends has got to be one of the most essential things good, food and shelter can step aside. Events will be a mix of in-person and virtual for 2021 so you can enjoy some of the festivities no matter where you are. Check out the calendar for a full list of what's happening. Cheers to you if you're already in Philly, if not then maybe you're ready for a beercation. Philly Beer Week 2021 is June 4th - 13th. (I'm no mathologist but that sounds like it's more than a week.)
This week MG is saving a seat for her guest, Meredith Rebar, Certified Cicerone, owner of Home Brewed Events, and new employee of Deer Creek Malthouse! Meredith loves talking about beer and the power of fermentation. She and MG both adore food, beverage, and events and most importantly celebrating all of these with other people! In this episode, you’ll learn about beer & spirits education, what it means to be Certified Cicerone, and the pleasure and not-so-pleasurable experience of tastings with off flavors and sensitive palates. Meredith opens up about how music has been an instrumental outlet for her and how she has reconnected with her roots in the music industry. Despite the pandemic, she took her tastings and brewing courses to a virtual platform, and she is excited to continue her involvement in major festivals and events in Philadelphia like the 2nd Street Festival and Philly Beer Week! Proprietor and Event Director, Meredith Megan Rebar (Certified Cicerone©), began her career managing and producing special events and concerts at the Abbey Bar as part of Appalachian Brewing Company in Harrisburg, PA. The Beer and Booze Broz wrap up the ten day extravaCANza known as Philly Beer Week with some new knowledge, some furry friends, and a few times they thought they turned the recorder on but realized later they were calling their Aunt Janet over and over again and while Aunt Janet really liked to hear from them you can't make a podcast out of that because no one would really want to listen to it except maybe Aunt Janet. She has good taste though. Then, they find out the difference between a New England IPA and that hazy jawn everyone's going crazy about, from the guy who discovered it in the first place! After that, they pet dogs with their dawgs at Dogfish Head and Flying Dog. Paul tries to get everyone to subscribe to the podcast. The boys wrap it up with the Chairman of the Board himself, a mad genius in a mummer suit named Casey Parker. Go check out Philly Loves Beer! They put on Philly Beer Week and we love them. Phillylovesbeer.org The Beer and Booze Broz is a KYW Newsradio original podcast. This week's featured artist is JP Flexner who we came to learn of through his work with Neshaminy Creek Brewing Co. Anytime I get the opportunity to call folks back in my hometown of Philadelphia it seems like a huge win for me and the project and this case was no different. JP's story is a great one of someone who loves his craft, is true to himself and does what he does for the love and joy of creating imagery, branding and characters. Listen to us geek out over music and life with ease and comfort that couldn't be forced. Hear how he is trying to take my gig as the interviewer with his upcoming round table for Philly Beer Week (just messing' JP!) A fun episode and perspective on the power of topography too. One of the big joys was his client base and those folks he choose to align himself with and how their mission and vision impacts his choice to partner with them. He gives all of himself to them and it is much more than a business relationship when you get to hear him talk about them. It will have you look at his book of business and portfolio with a unique appreciation that much like his relationships, can't be forced.
April means Wine Week in Philadelphia! And the Beer and Booze Broz, those dapper and cultured in-demand sophisticates, were in attendance to teach wine glasses a thing or three about not being empty so often. Lesson learned, the Broz and their wine glasses ventured off into the rainy night to a luau at Evil Genius Beer Company, where they learned what a stock market crash has to do with happy hour. Then, it's off to pregame beer week! The broz get to watch the brewing of Brotherly Suds, the official beverage of Philly Beer Week, which can't come soon enough. For a nightcap, they grab a couple bourbons and learn about whiskey rules. After 102 episodes we finally returned to Naked Brewing in Huntingdon Valley, PA. Despite suffering a possible concussion, owner Brian Sucevic returned to the mic with as much irreverence as ever, joined by newcomer David Wood – now serving as head brewer. We talked upcoming beers, changes since our last visit, Dave’s hatred of glitter beer, Philly Beer Week, some bouts of random trivia, and more. Dan reported on New Realm purchasing Green Flash’s equipment, MillerCoors’ response to Stone Brewing’s Keystone lawsuit, and a creepy crawly burger. In Happy Fun Time we played a 4/20 inspired variation of Libation or Fabrication called Beer or Bud and Steph gave us a rundown of the Flanders Red Ale style in Know Your Beers. During these proceedings we sipped on several Naked brews – from pitchers, because of course we did. Do you love Beer Busters? Of course you do! With John Stemler from Free Will Brewing Company Kick off Philly Beer Week with this episode at Free Will with renowned brewer John Stemler. John won a raffle for a trip to Belgium to brew at Hof ten DormaalFarmhouse brewery in Tildonk. Tragically, the brewery suffered a fire in January. We recorded this episode at a fundraising event at Free Will. Aside from chatting with John about his brewing experience and his trip to Belgium, we spread the love of Philly Beer Week in both the news and Know Your Beers segments, and played a Philly-themed Years of Beers in Happy Fun Time Games. Also, a cameo appearance by our good friend Bart Kaminski from Hop Hedz who won a bottle of one of the highest-rated and rarest beers in the world, Trappist Westvleteren 12, in a raffle and was uber-cool enough to share it with us on the show to round out our tasting of the equally impressive Free Will brews.
