Matt is joined this week by returning guest Myke Hutchings and new guest David Milmine to discuss working as a duo as Santa and elf Phineus!
In this week's episode we discuss the Harpies, creatures with the head of a woman and the body of a monstrous bird that represent storm winds. This episode was created in the wake of a huge storm that knocked my power out for 2 days, so there's discussion of the impact of storms, unpredictability, and sudden change. The name refers to "snatching", and in the myths this refers to the snatching of food, of children--and of souls. THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta Stay Alive is a 2006 American supernatural horror film directed by William Brent Bell, who co-wrote it with Matthew Peterman. The film was produced by Joseph McGinty Nichol, and released on March 24, 2006 in the United States. It was the first film released by Hollywood Pictures after five years of inactivity. After playing a video game titled Stay Alive, Loomis Crowley, his roommate Rex, and Rex's girlfriend Sarah are killed the same way as their characters were killed in the game. At Loomis' funeral, his friend Hutch meets Abigail – a friend of Sarah – and receives some of Loomis' possessions, including Stay Alive. Hutch, his girlfriend October, and her brother Phineus decide to play the game as a group. They are joined by Abigail and another friend, Swink, while Hutch's boss Miller plays online from his office. The game is set in a derelict mansion on Gerouge Plantation, but it only starts when the six players recite "The Prayer of Elizabeth," a request for "all who resist" to perish so that their blood can keep the Countess Elizabeth Bathory young. The players fight through a cemetery of evil ghost children, heading toward a mausoleum and tower. Miller is directed by the game to pick up a rose. October, a reader of occult literature, explains that undead spirits cannot move across wild roses. Separated from the others, Miller throws the rose to dispel the spirits of undead girls. Since he is now out of roses, a woman in a red dress, the Countess, kills Miller's character. Minutes later, the Countess appears in Miller's office and kills him by stabbing him with conjoined scissor blades like the ones in the game. Two detectives, Thibodeaux and King, question Hutch about the homicides. Hutch realizes that Loomis and Miller played Stay Alive right before they died, and that they died the same way as their game characters did. October researches Bathory and learns she would drain young women of blood, bathing in it to maintain her youth. Her weakness was mirrors because she could not stand to see herself growing old. Phineus decides to play alone, and despite quitting the game before his character can die, he is killed in real life when he is run over by a horse-drawn carriage. The survivors agree to stop playing Stay Alive. However, Detective King ignores Swink's warning and plays until his character dies. King is then killed in his car. Hutch and Abigail search Loomis' house and learn of the game developer's location: the real Gerouge Plantation. October has discovered that the real Countess Bathory was locked in the tower of her estate as punishment for her gruesome acts and vowed to return one day for revenge, which she is now able to do, as The Prayer of Elizabeth has resurrected her. The Countess can only be killed by driving three nails into her body to trap her soul. October sees the Countess in real life and tries to kill her but realizes that she is a ghost. She has her throat slit by the Countess. The three survivors realize that once the game has begun, it can play by itself. Swink stays in a van and plays the game on his laptop to distract Bathory, while Hutch and Abigail search Gerouge Plantation.

There is a crisis in America. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 19.7 million children live without a father in the home. That's more than one out of every four children. Research shows that when a child is raised in a fatherless home, he or she is affected in many ways.Being a dad has never been easy. In our Scripture today we learn of two Godly men, great men, men who loved the Lord and served Him in so many ways…but they were not good fathers. They would have bravely stood up against most any enemy for the Lord, but they would not stand up to their own children. Thus, we have the sad ending of Hophni and Phineus—and of Joel and Abijah. Join Dr. T. D. Worthington for this week's PathLight message entitled “Fatherhood.”

In November last year, Chelsie and Danny saw Doppsee, the black rhino, get an ultrasound and they had an episode about it.Doppsee is the 13-year-old female eastern black rhino at Potter Park Zoo, who is originally from Sedgwick County Zoo in Kansas. The male rhino at Potter Park, Phineus, traveled to Lansing from Caldwell Zoo in Texas in 2017. Doppsee gave birth to Jaali, on December 24th, 2019. In this episode, they follow up with Dr. Ronan Eustace, and Pat Fountain again to see how Doppsee is doing after giving birth. They were also joined this time by Adrianna Davidson, Murphy Swartz, and Kim Hernandez. Adrianna and Murphy are hoofstock keepers and Kim is the area lead hoofstock keeper. They take care of the rhinos and they discuss what it is like to tend to a baby rhino. Dr. Ronan Eustace has a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Saskatchewan, Western CVM. After three and a half years at Potawatomi Zoo, Dr. Ronan Eustace came to Potter Park Zoo. Before coming to Potter Park Zoo, Dr. Ronan worked at practices ranging from sizeable multi-doctor specialty practices to small rural mixed clinics for four years before he became a zoo veterinarian.Pat Fountain is the Animal Care Supervisor at Potter Park Zoo. He received his B.S. in Zoology in 2006 from Michigan State University. Pat has cared for Doppsee since she arrived in 2011 and he was there for Jaali's birth. To find out more about Potter Park Zoo, ways that you can support Doppsee and Jaali and the other animals at Potter Park Zoo, you can visit their website. If you're interested in talking about your MSU research on the radio or nominating a student, please email Chelsie and Danny at scifiles@impact89fm.org. Josh and Erick discuss the new streaming platform on the block on this week's From Idea to Done. Erick shares his love-hate relationship dynamic with Disney+ and more on this episode. The two compare it to other available streaming services and dig into what it offers.J/E: Hey Everyone, I'm Josh and I'm ErickE: This week’s idea is the evolution of streaming television. I did it. I finally stopped being a butt hurt collector, and downloaded Disney Plus.J: Butt hurt collector? Well thats…. Ummmm… yeah...E: Yes, well before Disney Plus came out. I was probably one of a very small segment of people that owned all the Simpsons seasons, basically everything Star Wars including the old hand drawn Clone Wars that used to play in 5 minute shorts on Cartoon Network Fridays at 7, as well as all the Marvel movies, a lot of vaulted Disney movies, and weird random Disney cartoons like Rescue Rangers and Gummi Bears. Disney devalued years of collecting and basically my entire Blu Ray collection in October.J: Rescue Rangers? Oh yeah…. Duck Tales, right? [CLOSE] Anywho, what made you change your mind?E: The Mandalorian! I knew I was going to crack because I love Star Wars, or at least I love everything that has ever been made in the Star Wars Universe. Minus the movies. We don’t have time for me to get into that though. J: We did an episode when I switched my family over to the streaming service of Youtube TV what are your thoughts on Disney Plus?E: It was AWESOME! Basically it is a Niche streaming service for Disney, Star Wars, and Marvel fans. Which as a young at heart nerd. I enjoyed it. I am their Niche market. J: What made it different from Netflix for you?E: Nothing. This was the disappointing part for me. It has Phineus and Ferb, and the Mandalorian. It also had Recess and other pretty awesome shows I forgot about, but there is nothing different or better about it. The thing that Netflix should worry about is that Disney owns so much creative rights to basically generations worth of entertainment.J: Yeah I’m feeling like every channel is now having their own app and its an entire world of HBO’s, good on Netflix for producing their own content. Anywho, we’re here to talk about Disney, I think they did a good job with it, the kids like it, i get my hulk smash movies.E: I give it a B. I loved the Mandalorian. Disney just stole the revolutionary app idea of streaming entertainment from Netflix, and are making their fans pay them instead of Netflix. The part I liked is they are taking the creative copyrights they do own and expanding them. I am excited for the next season of the Clone Wars, the stand alone Obi Wan series, and more Mandalorian. I want them to create more original content in the Marvel, and all the other kids programming they have before they will get an A from me. J: Thank you for listening to this episode. If you know a startup that could use our random advice and thoughts have them subscribe and leave a review on iTunes.
This week on The Sci-Files, Chelsie and Danny went to Potter Park Zoo to see Doppsee, the pregnant black rhino, get an ultrasound. While they were there, they interviewed a variety of people who interact with Doppsee and have experience in veterinary medicine. In this interview, you will hear the perspectives and knowledge of 9 different interviewees.Doppsee is the 13-year-old female eastern black rhino at Potter Park Zoo, who is originally from Sedgwick County Zoo in Kansas. The male rhino at Potter Park, Phineus, traveled to Lansing from Caldwell Zoo in Texas in 2017.Before the ultrasound, Chelsie and Danny discussed Doppsee's pregnancy with students in their fourth year at the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Michigan State University (MSU): Bethany Myers, Peter Fowler, Sumana Prabhakar, and Ashleigh Shoemaker.Chelsie and Danny also spoke to Bridget Walker, a third-year student in the CVM at MSU. She began working at the Potter Park Zoo as a summer student under Dr. Ronan Eustace, the staff veterinarian and Director of Animal Health at Potter Park Zoo. She conducted a research project and zoo medical cases, which allowed her to visit Doppsee and monitor her pregnancy. After viewing Doppsee's ultrasound, Chelsie and Danny spoke to the vets who conducted the ultrasound and the Potter Park Zoo Animal Care Supervisor.Dr. Julie Strachota is a clinical instructor for the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences and resident for the Large Animal Theriogenology Service. She is an MSU native with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Animal Science, Master of Science in Large Animal Clinical Sciences, and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from MSU. Before returning to MSU as an instructor, Dr. Strachota worked for four years in a progressive, equine-exclusive practice, which is where she developed a strong interest and skill set in equine reproductive techniques. Besides her passion for theriogenology (a branch of veterinary medicine focusing on reproduction), Dr. Strachota is developing an equine primary care service for clinical veterinary students.Dr. Carleton is a graduate of the Kansas State University CVM. She was the equine theriogenologist at MSU's CVM for more than 30 years. In addition to her decades of dedication to theriogenology, she served for years on the exam committee as president of the American College of Theriogenologists and founded Diplomate of the American College of Animal Welfare. Both specialties are AVMA recognized. Dr. Carleton continues her work globally.Dr. Pat has cared for Doppsee since she arrived in 2011. Pat said, “Soon after arriving, it was apparent she [Doppsee] was a special rhino, and we have formed an incredible bond over the last eight years.”“Doppsee is almost always willing to train and has helped us accomplish much more in her time here than we ever thought possible. We are eagerly anticipating the birth of her first calf, and we are hopeful she is going to be a great mother.”To find out more about Potter Park Zoo, ways that you can support Doppsee's pregnancy and the other animals at Potter Park Zoo, you can visit their website. If you're interested in talking about your MSU research on the radio or nominating a student, please email Chelsie and Danny at scifiles@impact89fm.org. Crowd scenes of any sort can be horrible to draw. There are many, many reasons for this, one of them is that it's quite boring to invent a whole lot of new character models just for the purpose of making a group scene. My own way of combating that problem was to do cameos of other characters that I stole from my fellow Quackcasters, Banes, Pitface and Tantz. There are many other tricks and clever ways of managing crows though which you can hear bout in the Quackcast or see us talk about in the Quackcast video.Gunwallace's theme for Phineus Magician for Hire is VERY Sword and Sorcery! It reminded me a little of the famous music to the first (and best), Conan film, and brought to mind the writing of Fritz Leiber.Topics and shownotesFeatured comic:The weird adventures of Armless Amy - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/The_weird_adventures_of_Armless_Amy/Links:Quackcast 259 VIDEO - https://youtu.be/1B-VMPKzTrAContributions can be read here - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/forum/topic/177442/Crowded street Mobius image https://i2.wp.com/comicartcommunity.com/gallery/data/media/159/03-Jean-Giraud-aka-Moebius-Crowded-Streets.jpgContributors:Bravo1102 - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/user/bravo1102/Usedbooks - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/user/usedbooks/Whirlwynd - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/user/Whirlwynd/Genejoke - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/user/Genejoke/Fallopiancrusader - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/user/fallopiancrusader/Irrevenant- http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/user/irrevenant/Ironscarf - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/user/Ironscarf/El Cid - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/Certified_Monster/Special thanks to:Gunwallace - http://www.virtuallycomics.comBanes - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/user/Banes/Tantz Aerine - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/Without_Moonlight/Pitface - http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/user/PIT_FACE/Please contribute to help DD - https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/drunk-duck-webcomics-improvement-drive/x/4410947#/The theme song by Gunwallace this week was for:Phineus Magician for Hire - Music: http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/Phineus_Magician_for_Hire/ by Phinmagic, rated M.- See more at: http://www.theduckwebcomics.com/news/2016/feb/22/quackcast-259-drawing-crowd-scenes/
In fulfillment of prophecy, judgment was coming to Eli and his sons. The Philistines attack Israel and Israel loses four thousand men in the first day of battle. In a last ditch effort to save themselves, the Israelites bring the Ark of the Covenant in battle the second day. Instead of bringing them victory, thirty thousand Israelites die in battle with Hophi and Phineus and on the same day Eli dies and the Ark of the Covenant is captured by the Philistines. The rest of the episode, we cover the captivity of the Ark of the Covenant in Philistia and what happens when we treat God's presence like a good luck charm, we look at God as our prize and we treat God with contempt.
The young boy Samuel grew up in the house of the Lord, all the while, Hophi and Phineus continued to desecrate the sacrifices of Israel. As sin increased and the defilement of the priesthood continued, Samuel grew in the anointing and purposes of God. In this episode, we cover the call of Samuel by God himself.
In the two books of Samuel, God does everything - both good and "bad." Three times he sends evil spirits to torment Saul; He then tempts David to give a bad census; He "decided to kill" Hophni and Phineus; He closed up Hannah's womb until her prayer; after Nabal had a massive stroke that left him paralyzed, "The LORD struck Nabal and he died" (1 Samuel 25:38). God is responsible for everything in this book! Hannah would sum up God's power this way, "The LORD kills and restores to life; he sends people to the world of the dead and brings them back again. He makes some people poor and others rich; he humbles some and makes others great" (1 Samuel 2:6,7). Does God send evil spirits and tempt us to do evil? Does God kill people after they have had a massive stroke? Does God "decide to kill" people and then execute the plan? Does God make some people poor and others rich? This general subject is critically important to our understanding of God as well as our entire approach to the Old Testament.
