Jamal would sleep outside some nights when his mother would lock him out of the house. Other nights he would go from couch to couch at friends' houses. That's until he found help with a Tampa non-profit run called Starting Right, Now. You'll hear how Jamal coped without a place to call home. And how Starting Right Now founder Vicki Sokolik dedicated her life to helping kids like Jamal, who are separated from their families by abuse or neglect but outside the foster care system. They're a uniquely vulnerable group of the nation's growing number of people who are unhoused. This episode first aired in March 2024.

In the midst of chaos, it's sometimes hard to see the best way forward. We often find ourselves clamoring for relief and desperately seeking refuge. During the distress, nothing is more desired than the safety of home - although during such times we struggle to verbalize that desire. Today, we find a song reminding us that God is our shelter – our home. He is our refuge and without us even realizing, He comes to us.Support the Show.
As the cost of living crisis continues to increase the strain on families, a record 142,000 children in England are homeless and living in what should be short term temporary accommodation. Children are being consigned to B&Bs and hotels, former office blocks - even shipping containers – some without a bed of their own, living among rats and cockroaches - conditions the children's commissioner has condemned as Dickensian. With the help of young people and their families, File on 4 investigates how temporary accommodation - meant to be a short term safety net - has become a trap some children can't escape.Reporter: Jane Deith Producer: Nicola Dowling Technical Producer: James Beard Production Coordinator: Jordan King Editors: Clare Fordham and Carl JohnstonImage: Imgorthand via Getty Images

For many children, entering foster care is extremely confusing and can come as a shock as they when they don't understand how it works, who they can rely on, or where they'll call home. My guest today is Darien Karenbauer. Darien is a former foster youth and transracial adoptee who spent six years in the foster care system from ages 10 to 17. He experienced two failed adoptions and even lived in a detention facility (because a home couldn't be found for him) before he was ultimately adopted at 17 years old. In this episode, Darien shares his experience of entering foster care with little-to-no knowledge of how the system worked. Though that experience threw him into survival mode, he would eventually be able to build relationships because someone was willing to invest in his well-being before even meeting him. I am so grateful to be sharing Darien's story with you! Show Notes: https://theforgotteninitiative.org/darien-karenbauer-206/

Evictions are a tale as old as time, and will continue as long as there are landlords and renters; but not every eviction is equal. In this episode, J.R. Jamison shares two stories from individuals who have faced eviction in different ways; the first from a man who has experienced homelessness due to job losses, and a judge who says that sometimes the landlords are right, and sometimes they're wrong. Later, he sits down with four experts who research and work on the front lines of eviction and housing insecurity every day. This episode is a companion piece to the book: Facing Eviction and Housing Insecurity in Dayton, Ohio. Photo Credit – Shantanu Suman Stories – A Place to Be, an anonymous story as told to A.B. In this episode, you will meet two amazing women who are fellow MOUNTAIN MOVERS! Teena is a self-advocate and well-known for her "suitcase" presentation where she unpacks what life looks like for people with disabilities. Julie not only works to support families who have loved ones with special needs, she also has two children on the Spectrum. Navigating adulthood can be hard enough and then adding in the need for some accommodations and safeguards can be daunting. Our guests teamed up with us to talk with us about the idea that EVERYONE NEEDS A PLACE TO CALL HOME - A place that feels like home because there is CHOICE and the respect and dignity to build a life around what personally matters to each person. As the discussion unfolds, you'll realize that while our current housing reality is tough, there have been times that even fewer options were available. Lean into this conversation and learn how we can "work" our current system and advocate for change. We hope you leave the discussion with some ideas and peace of mind knowing you are not alone. How do some of society's most vulnerable people – men in particular – fall into insecure housing?
When you walk through the tool department at your neighborhood hardware store, it isn't just a collection of hammers. Big hammers, small hammers, funny-shaped hammers, but just hammers. No, there are different tools for different jobs. Well, God has different jobs to be done for His Kingdom and so He's given His people different tools: talents, abilities, personalities and spiritual gifts to get the jobs done. If we aren't using our gifts, we may not be used by the Master. Listen on harvest.org --- Own Jesus Revolution on DVD! For years, Liz Wixom Johnsen helped families decorate their homes as a talented interior designer. And for years, Liz dreamed of a home that was like theirs—not because of the decor, but because of the families within those walls. As a single woman, she often longed for a home life that looked different than the one she had. But she also learned that true homes come in many different shapes and sizes. And when she married a man with eight children and her home was instantly dramatically different, that knowledge became invaluable. On this week's episode, Liz shares what she's learned about embracing the homes—and the lives—God has prepared for each one of us. He left the electricity in the cloud, the oil in the earth. He left the rivers unbridged and the forests unfelled and the cities unbuilt. In this week's episode, we focus on a group of dreamers in the U.S. who have lived in the country for most of their lives yet have no clear path to permanence or citizenship in the country. The episode's guest is Dip Patel, the founder of an organization called Improve the Dream which advocates for this group of young people known as “Documented Dreamers.” It turns out that many people do not know about the predicament and difficulties that Documented Dreamers face—their situation often flies under the radar and is often overshadowed by larger immigration debates in the U.S. Dip helps us disentangle why almost a quarter million young people who call America home face an uncertain future that hangs in the balance. No man is an island to himself. To be out on ones own comes at a cost that no one is truly willing or designed to pay. The clique mentality or group gang mindset is natural thing God himself actually put in us. However how we decide to get off these islands of isolation and join the right team is key. Both naturally and most importantly spiritually to be adjoined with the right set of people. Choose carefully as these people will help mold shape guide and even define you...

The artist Hank Willis Thomas is a voracious reader, not only of books, but of the world around us—and particularly, of images. Through his practice, Thomas interrogates and investigates, probes and prods, and ultimately helps make sense of various strands of visual culture—advertising, photographs, videos, clothing and ephemera, monuments—to tell necessary stories and shape new forms of meaning and memory. While Thomas's roots are in the medium of photography, his work also extends far into other realms, including sculpture and memorialization. A prime example of this and a collaboration with MASS Design Group is “The Embrace,” a memorial to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King, that will be unveiled in the Boston Common in January 2023. Another is the Gun Violence Memorial Project, organized with the prevention organizations Purpose Over Pain and Everytown for Gun Safety, and also with MASS. Central to Thomas's art are the subjects of truth and reality (best illustrated by his traveling “Truth Booth” installation, which toured all 50 states in the lead up to the 2016 U.S. presidential election), how they're shaped, and by whom. Many of Thomas's more conceptual projects also tend to be collective. Most notable among these is For Freedoms, an artist-run coalition he co-founded in 2016 as a super PAC that serves as a platform for artists of all kinds to meaningfully contribute to public discourse and help raise political awareness in the United States. On this episode of Time Sensitive, Thomas speaks with Spencer about identity as a figment of our imaginations, race as the “most successful advertising campaign” ever, and quilt-stitching as a metaphor for all that he does.Special thanks to our Season 6 sponsor, L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts.Hank Willis Thomas[06:36] “Remember Me” [06:56] “Digging Deeper”[12:12] MASS Design Group[15:27] “The Embrace”[18:02] “Raise Up”[19:27] Gun Violence Memorial Project[23:21] “Unity”[27:59] TED Talk: “A Mother and Son United by Love and Art” [38:31] “Along The Way”[39:08] “Branded”[39:08] “Unbranded”[39:08] “Rebranded”[39:23] “Absolut Power” [43:55] “A Place to Call Home”[44:01] “Question Bridge: Black Males”[47:00] “Truth Booth”[49:01] For Freedoms[49:01] “For Freedoms News”[58:46] “Guernica”

Lauren tells us this is a tale about old friends and new, and the true meaning of home. In this story Hedgehog is a bit confused. On the one paw, Hedgehog is excited to meet one of her own kind, but on the other paw, she has never felt so different—or distant—from her old friends. Home and family is the theme of this episode. BYU Men's basketball point guard Rudi Williams explains why he has bounced around the country playing basketball before finally calling Provo his home. But first, what do you do when the Cougar faithful in the home stands scream for change? Former BYU QB and broadcaster Blaine Fowler has all the answers.
