They were on the verge of divorce and desperate. Deanna felt their marriage "was doomed" due to broken trust after infidelity that left her feeling insecure, and spiraling down into a manic depressive state. Keithan was struggling with guilt and shame due to his past inappropriate behavior and lack of trustworthiness. They were attempting to live a polyamorous lifestyle, but just didn't have the tools to do it well, which led to violations of their agreements time and time again.
