You may have heard of Tom Slick, the man who financed many early expeditions in search of Sasquatch both the in US and internationally. But did you know he was also a scientist, military man, inventor, philanthropist, and much more? Learn the strange, fascinating and tragically short history of Thomas Baker Slick Jr. with Heather Moser, Mark Matzke and guest host Aaron Deese. Email - Monsteropolis@smalltownmonsters.com SHOW NOTES Monsteropolis: Tom Slick Welcome back, you lawless knaves. READER MAIL - got at least one - HERE IT IS, from our friend Christine! — Hi Guys, First of all, congratulations on the success of your 10th anniversary Kickstarter! I can't wait to see your new films, especially The Siege of Ape Canyon and The Kinderhook Creature. I listened with interest to the Monsteropolis episode where you described the changing nature of the appearance of the Wendigo in popular culture from an emaciated human being to one with antlers and a stag's skull. In the fall last year I became aware of the legend of the Leshy of pagan Slavic culture through an excellent YA novel called "Where the Dark Stands Still" by Polish writer A.B. Poranek. When I googled the Leshy I was astounded to see images of what I recognised as the Wendigo. So this got me thinking - is there a Slavic influence at play here too? Perhaps this is something you could look in to! I am really looking forward to the book and film regarding the Wendigo which I understand may come out next year. I have been fascinated by the Wendigo since reading Algernon Blackwood's novella and there is one passage in particular that always sticks in my mind: "And soon after he slept, the change of wind he had divined stirred gently the reflection of the stars within the lake. Rising among the far ridges of the country beyond Fifty Island Water, it came from the direction in which he had stared, and it passed over the sleeping camp with a faint and sighing murmur through the tops of the big trees that was almost too delicate to be audible. With it, down the desert paths of night, though too faint, too high even for the Indian's hair-like nerves, there passed a curious, thin odor, strangely disquieting, an odor of something that seemed unfamiliar—utterly unknown." Welcome to another episode where we dive deep into the mysteries of the legendary Sasquatch. Today, we embark on a journey through time, exploring the origins of this enigmatic creature's name, the pioneers who paved the way for cryptozoological research, and the modern-day encounters cataloged by the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO). Finally, we'll take a closer look at the track evidence that has sparked heated debates in both the scientific and cryptid communities. The Genesis of the Name SasquatchLong before Bigfoot became a household name, indigenous cultures across North America shared stories of large, hairy beings that roamed the forests. The term Sasquatch itself originates from the Coast Salish word Sésquac, meaning “wild man.” It was introduced to popular culture in the 1920s by J.W. Burns, a Canadian teacher who collected and documented First Nations' accounts of the creature. From there, Sasquatch slowly made its way into the cryptid lexicon, preceding the more famous moniker Bigfoot, which wouldn't gain traction until the late 1950s.The pursuit of unknown creatures isn't new. In the mid-20th century, a new branch of study emerged—cryptozoology—dedicated to investigating creatures that exist on the fringes of scientific recognition. Figures like Bernard Heuvelmans, Ivan T. Sanderson, and Grover Krantz were instrumental in developing this field, applying scientific methods to analyze claims of mysterious creatures, including Sasquatch. Krantz, in particular, became one of the foremost defenders of Bigfoot's potential existence, arguing that physical evidence—especially footprints—could not be easily dismissed. The Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) has meticulously cataloged thousands of encounters, compiling witness reports from across North America. From fleeting glimpses to prolonged close encounters, the database serves as one of the largest repositories of Bigfoot-related evidence. Patterns have emerged over time—frequent sightings in the Pacific Northwest, eerie vocalizations heard in dense forests, and even alleged physical interactions with the creature. But with this vast amount of anecdotal evidence, the question remains: Are these reports merely misidentifications, hoaxes, or something more?Tracks and the Debate Over Their AuthenticityFootprints have long been one of the most cited pieces of evidence in the search for Sasquatch. Some tracks, like the famous Cripple Foot print analyzed by Grover Krantz, have been presented as near-definitive proof of the creature's existence. Others, like the tracks discovered by Paul Freeman, have been widely debated, with skeptics arguing they were fabricated. This brings us to an article published in The Skeptical Inquirer by Michael R. Dennett, titled Bigfoot Evidence: Are These Tracks Real? In this piece, Dennett critically examines track evidence, particularly those tied to Freeman and Krantz, raising questions about their authenticity and whether belief has clouded scientific rigor.Final ThoughtsWhether you're a believer, a skeptic, or somewhere in between, the mystery of Sasquatch remains one of the most enduring and fascinating topics in cryptozoology. The stories, the evidence, and the ongoing debates keep us questioning what might be lurking in the remote wilderness. As we sift through history, firsthand encounters, and the physical evidence left behind, one thing is certain—the legend of Sasquatch isn't going anywhere.Tune in and decide for yourself: Are we on the cusp of a major cryptozoological discovery, or is the truth behind Sasquatch forever lost in folklore and fabrication?Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our SponsorsVisit Untold Radio AMVisit HIMS.COMBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

We must all be compassionate. You never know what someone else is going through. - Keely Krantz Keely Krantz got her start in PR, eventually leading the launch of high-profile, global brands. A proud Boston College graduate, she was fortunate to have a mentor who had broken through glass ceilings and believed in passing it on. Says Keely “Janet Diederichs at Edelman Public Relations in Chicago challenged me to be someone I would never have aspired to if it hadn't been for her guidance. I learned to be bold and aggressive.” At the height of Keely's career, she became a mom and decided to stay at home with her kids, choosing parenthood and volunteerism over a career. It was this devotion to community and the greater good that inspired Keely and her husband Jason to make the largest gift in the history of Mass General Hospital cancer research history last year. Says Keely: “We don't want to see small, incremental changes. We want to see fundamental, monumental, landscape-changing breakthroughs in the treatment of cancer, and we are willing to take big risks at the Krantz Family Research Center on physician-scientists who have big, aggressive ideas. We want to swing for the fences.” A few months later, Keely launched her next big chapter as the founder of the O'Dell Women's Center www.odellwomenscenter.com in Springfield, Massachusetts. Named after her 98-year-old grandmother, who was a maternity nurse in the community for 40 years, the O'Dell Center is a first-of-its-kind in Springfield with 10,000 square feet of collaborative space that houses Dress for Success/Western Mass and other non-profits that advance educational and career opportunities for low-income women. In just one year, $250,000 in grants have been awarded. For Keely, this new chapter is the culmination of a story rooted in faith and the lessons of her parents. “Anything is possible” are three words I heard all the time when I was growing up. Says Keely. “I want to be a connector, surrounded by the mantra that respect and kindness go hand in hand. I want to do good.” For 23 minutes of inspiration, just hit that download button. #women #community #cancer @massgeneralcancercenter

Samm Deighan and Axel Kohagen join Mike to kick off a month of science fiction fun with the one film that is the least sci-fi of the bunch, The Unknown Man of Shandigor. Released in 1967 the film is a rare feature film from Swiss filmmaker Jean-Louis Roy. The film is something of a spy movie which stars the singular Daniel Emilfork as Professor Herbert von Krantz, a scientist who has crafted a device called the Annulator which can reverse a nuclear explosion. He, his assistant Yvan, and daughter Sylvaine are the targets of several spy rings -- The Russians, The Americans, The French maybe, and the Man with the Platinum Ring all want The Annulator or to destroy it.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.

Tune in to find out more about how it all began, who the key players were and what secrets are disclosed in his book! Dustin moved to Oregon from the Midwest in spring of 2016. In this episode of the podcast, we host the inimitable and unapologetically ambitious, Sophie Krantz. We had a conversation about leadership and the need for economic growth and opportunity. We discussed the possibility of creating positive change in the world through frameworks like exponential organization (ExO) and coaching ordinary people to do extraordinary things. In this wide ranging conversation, we discussed - The importance of seeing the world as one and the need to overcome fears and limiting beliefs to achieve breakthrough growth. - The value of immersive experiences and tapping into personal passions to create unapologetic ambition and confidence in tackling global problems. - The difference between a limited and expanded worldview, with Sophie encouraging people to look for colour in the world and to tap into their potential to create something new. - The power of generative AI and the importance of exploring the world and pushing outside of one's comfort zone. - The importance of expanding limitations and having ambition in leadership. - The need for role models and the importance of creating a space for people to play and experiment in order to tap into their creativity - The importance of expanding one's perspective and mindset in order to succeed in a world surrounded by smart machines and intelligent algorithms. - The importance of continuously learn and experiment, and to reach out to others for support and knowledge. We had a conversation about experimentation with generative AI, the oneness of the world, and the importance of concrete stories in relating to ideas. There's a lot to talk about when it comes to selling our work and making a living as an artist. I think the more we have honest conversations and share our experiences, the more we can learn and feel supported. Just because you love what you do, doesn't mean that making a living as an artist is all rainbows and butterflies. Making a living not only means charging enough to cover each and every expense that your business incurs, but that you are also financially prepared to make it through an unexpected emergency or slow time without worry. This week, I had a serious, but really fun conversation with jewelry artist, Janine Krantz. Janine has been creating jewelry and running her own handmade business for well over 20 years. We covered a lot of territory about the reality of running a handmade business in this conversation… and you might say we got a little salty along the way. Janine Krantz is an art jeweler from New Jersey. She works primarily in sterling silver with one of a kind stones sourced from all over the world. Being a jeweler is a second career for her after working as a cosmetologist for 20 years with a side hustle of making and selling jewelry that entire time. Finally making the career switch to full time jeweler has been a dream come true. When she isn't running her business she enjoys spending time with her husband and three children, traveling, cooking, and gardening. Nick is a husband, father, and online fitness and nutrition coach - better known by his handle neurofitnick Nick has suffered over 17 concussions and traumatic brain injuries (TBI), beginning in high school as a football player, with numerous concussions continuing through his playing career and long after. After trying everything the doctor's could throw his way, Nick found hope and recovery through more natural and holistic methods - which we will discuss today. Along this path to self-recovery, Nick learned that the actions, routines, and habits he was leaning into to help with his TBI's, helped him also become a better father. Today Nick helps men and women from all walks of life to get into better shape, improve their mental state, and build discipline. I love Nick's simple approach to peak performance as a father. Monsoon Chocolate is making bean to bar chocolate in the desert climate of Tucson, Arizona. It's not a region we might think of as a hotspot for craft chocolate, but as founder Adam Krantz explains, the southwest has a strong historical claim to cacao, and he wanted to honor that heritage while also pushing the boundaries of flavor with unique regional ingredients like chiltepin chilis or mesquite.I love talking with chocolate makers or brewers who are using ingredients and flavors from their region to color outside the lines of tradition, or perhaps more accurately, to erase and redraw those lines. Tradition is not a fixed thing. Norms change. We can expand the guidelines for tomorrow's makers and tasters by thinking creatively today.Listen in as we talk with Adam Krantz of Monsoon Chocolate.Partner businesses mentioned in the episode include Hamilton Distillers/Whiskey Del Bac, Desert Provisions, Santa Ana Pueblo, Uncommon Cacao (listen to my interview with founder Emily Stone), and Meridian Cacao (listen to my interview with agronomist Sarah Bharath).
