Our guest for today's podcast is Maeley Tom, California State Legislature Extraordinaire and Founding Co-Chair of AAAIM. I stepped aside for this podcast and asked Gordon Liao, AAAIM Board Vice-Chair and ELI Committee Chair, to conduct this interview given their long history and friendship. In listening to Maeley's story, I have to admit that a few (happy) tears came to my eyes, after hearing about her upbringing. Maeley touches upon many important topics including being on her own from the age of 16, how she developed the grit to be successful, her views on the current Stop AAPI Hate Movement, how the idea for AAAIM was conceived, her personal journey in mustering up the courage to ask for the top job to become the Chief Administrative Officer of the California State Assembly, and the rationale for writing her book to inspire the next generation of leaders. Atypical of Asian tendencies of “being humble, not speaking up, not being the nail that stands out, not talking about your achievements; Maeley shares why being the opposite was key for her success in a Western culture society”. Be prepared to be inspired. Without further ado, please enjoy Gordon's conversation with Maeley Tom.

Meryl Davis is my guest on today’s podcast. Meryl skated to Olympic gold in ice dancing in 2014 and won the coveted mirrored ball on Dancing With The Stars. Since that time she has continued her education at the University of Michigan in cultural anthropology, got married in France, skated professionally around the world and she is empowering girls thru various philanthropic endeavors. I was excited to spend some time talking with Meryl about her travels around the world and her perspective of different cultures.Meryl BioWhen Meryl first fell in love with figure skating on a frozen lake by her childhood home outside of Detroit, Michigan, she had no idea the journey she was about to embark on. Teaming up with partner, Charlie White at the young age of nine, Meryl and Charlie began their quest together. Neither knowing much about the discipline of ice-dance, the team was driven by a passion for skating and the desire to learn, grow and see improvement from one day to the next. 20 years later, Meryl and Charlie are the reigning Olympic Champions and the first and only Americans to win the event. They’re also six-time U.S. Champions and 2-time World Champions, making them the most decorated U.S. ice dancers of all time. Immediately following their 2014 Olympic win in Sochi, Russia, Meryl and Charlie continued to dance into the hearts of Americans on season 18 of the hit TV show, Dancing with the Stars. With pro partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Meryl again came away with a win and the coveted Mirrorball trophy. Continuing their post-Olympic whirlwind, Meryl and Charlie now travel the world sharing their passion for skating with some of the most loved international skating tours, including Stars on Ice. With education always having been a priority for the pair, both are currently finishing up degrees at the University of Michigan while exploring other passions and interests. For Meryl, the journey to becoming an Olympic Champion was filled with challenges and opportunities that allowed her to find strength and confidence. As such, Meryl now seeks to empower girls and young women through her multiple philanthropic endeavors. Most prominently, Meryl is proud to be a Founding Co-Chair of Figure Skating in Detroit, a youth development organization that empowers girls to develop life skills through the sport of figure skating with a heavy emphasis on education. Meryl is also on the Advisory Panel of the Women’s Sports Foundation, a UNICEF Kid Power Champion, and Classroom Champions Athlete. When not at home with her family in Birmingham, Michigan Meryl most loves sharing her story and experiences in the hopes of inspiring others to follow their dreams.

Today, I'm broadcasting the second interview I recorded live at the Physical Therapy NEXT Exposition & Conference back in June. I want to thank the APTA for arranging this great interview on what's a very important topic for the profession. Each year at the convention, the John H.P. Maley Lecture Award is presented to an APTA member who has demonstrated clinical expertise and a significant contribution to the physical therapy profession. The lecture is considered to be one of the highlights at the APTA's NEXT Conference & Exposition. This year's lecture was awarded to Dr. Tara Jo Manal. It's titled Strike While the Iron is Hot. I really love that topic. Dr. Manal was a Founding Co-Chair of APTA's PT Now initiative, is Director of Clinical Services and Residency Training at the University of Delaware's Physical Therapy Department, as well as an associate professor at the DPT program at the University of Delaware. She is board certified in orthopedics as well as sports physical therapy. Her focus is translating the evidence and how it could be implemented into clinical practice. I spoke to Dr. Manal about the importance of standardized practice and how we can prevent the unwanted variation, which can be such a challenge when there's so much information and a variety of treatments available to us today. This is an important topic whether you're a clinician, an administrator or a patient. Settle in and take a listen and of course make sure to share it with your friends and family on social media.
