This week, as the election draws closer, we're narrowing the focus on national security. And we've got the perfect guest to discuss the topics that keep the watchers up at night and the area that is most likely to produce an October surprise. Tom Bowman is the legendary NPR National Desk reporter who covers the Pentagon along with co-hosting NPR's Taking Cover podcast and his latest podcast, “A Good Guy” from NPR's Embedded. In his current role, Bowman has traveled to Syria as well as Iraq and Afghanistan often for month-long visits and embedded with U.S. Marines and soldiers. Before coming to NPR in April 2006, Bowman spent nine years as a Pentagon reporter at The Baltimore Sun. Altogether he was at The Sun for nearly two decades, covering the Maryland Statehouse, the U.S. Congress, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the National Security Agency (NSA). His coverage of racial and gender discrimination at NSA led to a Pentagon investigation in 1994. Initially Bowman imagined his career path would take him into academia as a history, government, or journalism professor. During college Bowman worked as a stringer at The Patriot Ledger in Quincy, Mass. He also worked for the Daily Transcript in Dedham, Mass., and then as a reporter at States News Service, writing for the Miami Herald and the Anniston (Ala.) Star. Bowman is a co-winner of a 2006 National Headliners' Award for stories on the lack of advanced tourniquets for U.S. troops in Iraq. In 2010, he received an Edward R. Murrow Award for his coverage of a Taliban roadside bomb attack on an Army unit. In 2024, Bowman was also awarded a Murrow Award for Best Investigative Reporting for the Taking Cover podcast. Bowman earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from St. Michael's College in Winooski, Vermont, and a master's degree in American Studies from Boston College. WITF and Tim Lambert received some good news last week. Tim's story about his father being one of the last living witnesses to a unique atomic test in the 1950's was honored with a national Edward R. Murrow Award for best use of sound. Director of Journalism Scott Blanchard who was Tim's editor for the project sat down with Asia Tabb to talk about the impact of this story. “The Murrow Awards are among the most prestigious in the industry. The Radio Television News Directors Association presents Murrow Awards for first in 14 regions across the US. Broken down by the size of the market a station serves, and then the regional honorees are judged, and one story is recognized as the best among all regions in its market size. As the organization says, stories must uphold the RTDNA Code of ethics, demonstrate technical expertise, and exemplify the importance and impact of journalism as a service to the community, so they honor the dedication and excellence that broadcaster Edward R Murrow was known for. This is the seventh time that Tim has received a national Murrow, and the 18th time for WITF since 2007. So, it's a big deal to be honored on a regional level. And in fact, Tim Story received three regional awards for sound digital presentation and for Feature Story. And I want to take a minute to note that the, did digital producer Jeremy Long, graphic designer Tom Downing, and videographer Doug Watson all played key roles in the project.” The story called “A Pennsylvania man saw the true power of Atomic Annie,” is about Tim's father, who was in the Army, witnessing a nuclear test in the Nevada desert in 1953. “It was the only time that a tactical nuclear device was fired from a cannon. So it was a massive logistical undertaking. And a lot of that comes through in Tim's story. And in May 1953, when that test took place, the Korean War was on going, and North Korea and Russia were paying really close attention to what the U.S was doing. So, as you'll hear, the historian that Tim talked to, you say the U.S. was very much sending a message to those adversaries with this test. So this is a fascinating story about Tom Lambert's personal experience amid the bigger picture. Of this, event that had such international impact. And it's also a story that lives in American cultural history, the whole atomic age.” Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On November 4, 2022, I finished an 18-year run as an anchor and reporter at WCBS Newsradio. You can read more about my time at WCBS at: https://www.wallstreetnorth.com/2022/11/my-last-day-at-wcbs/ I am pleased to present here one of the highlights of my years with WCBS -- the 2021 Edward R. Murrow Award winning Best Newscast from The Radio Television Digital News Association in Region 11 (New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania). I was privileged to co-anchor this newscast, which was a true team effort. Looking back on this broadcast from March 3, 2020, it's clear that we've come a long way since then. That day we reported on New York's second confirmed case of coronavirus, in a lawyer from New Rochelle, NY. We reported that his family was self-quarantining, a new concept to all of us at that time. The U.S. death toll from the virus stood at 9 people. Dr. Anthony Fauci warned that a coronavirus vaccine would be months away. The Dow would fall 786 points that day as the Fed cut interest rates 50 basis points to help the economy in the looming health crisis. More than 1,300 Democratic delegates were at stake on that Super Tuesday, which would be the day that Joe Biden scored dramatic primary victories on his way to the presidential nomination.

ABOUT HER BOOK AS THE WICKED WATCHEmmy® Award-winning talk show host and television journalist Tamron Hall launches a new series of crime thrillers, featuring a main character modeled on herself, with AS THE WICKED WATCH: The First Jordan Manning Novel (William Morrow; October 26, 2021; $27.99). A small-town girl from Texas who has broken gender and racial barriers to land a job with a major Chicago television station, Jordan has leveraged her brains, looks, and grit to carve out a niche as a highly respected crime reporter, aided by her master's degree in forensic science. The brutal murder of a beautiful and promising Black teenager named Masey James could be the case that propels her to national stardom. But first, Jordan-who herself has lost a close family member to murder-must overcome the justice system's indifference and incompetence to track down the evil killer who is preying on Black children, and call out the many forces that leave them vulnerable. When twenty-nine-year-old Jordan arrives in her trademark designer stilettos at the abandoned playground where Masey's body has been discovered, it's a deeply distressing scene. A striking fifteen year-old with a loving mother and a stable home, Masey had recently been admitted to a coveted STEM school. In fact, she reminds Jordan of herself at that age-a golden girl with an unlimited future. Now, her remains have been found wrapped in a plastic sheet, her body showing signs of having been sexually assaulted, abused, and burned. What makes the situation even worse is that Masey's murder is the seventh unsolved killing of a Black woman in Chicago in the past two years. Jordan is appalled by the conduct of the police, who seem to be ignoring obvious leads that she quickly begins to uncover with her own investigative reporting. Disturbed by the tendency of both the police and the media to stereotype Black victims as somehow deserving of their fate, she reaches out to Masey's stunned mother. With memories of her own family tragedy still fresh, Jordan is genuinely compassionate, but she has to maintain professional boundaries in order to do her job. She must also be on guard against backstabbing by rival colleagues who resent her success and don't think the crime beat is appropriate for a young, Black, female reporter. With the help of her diverse, multiracial work family and her longtime friend Dr. Marvin Chan, a renowned forensic pathologist, Jordan begins to follow the twisting trail that she hopes will ultimately lead to Masey's killer. A veteran activist in the Black community, Louise Robinson, at first offers some tantalizing tips, but then suddenly shuts down. Jordan's secret contact inside the Chicago PD, Detective Joe Samuels, gives her vital assistance, but sometimes seems to be more interested in romance than in crime-solving.Meanwhile, Jordan's on-again, off-again sexual relationship with Thomas, a personal trainer, leaves her satisfied physically but otherwise not. But if one more person asks her about motherhood and settling down, she's going to scream. Masey's case takes a drastic turn when the DA announces out of the blue that three young Black boys, the oldest just thirteen, will be charged with her murder. Outraged by such an obvious miscarriage of justice, Jordan revs her investigation up even further as protests break out and threaten to plunge the city into violence. Soon after, the murder of another young Black girl in a manner frighteningly similar to Masey's raises the question of whether a serial killer is on the loose. Devoting herself completely to Masey's case, Jordan begins to take risks that place her and those close to her in stark danger. With her nerves rubbed raw and her body pushed to its limits, Jordan begins to question everything about this case and her involvement in it. What if Masey wasn't the innocent girl her mother thought she was? What if there was a dark side to her life that Jordan would have to reveal to her family and the viewers at home? Was Louise Robinson a community heroine or an opportunistic fraud, and maybe even an accomplice? Why has this case gripped Jordan so? Is this even the kind of work she wants to keep doing? She's getting worried about her habit of allowing other people's grief to enshroud her, then trying to drown it in a bottle. But in the end, Jordan summons every ounce of her ingenuity and courage to put into play a dangerous strategy that will utilize her instincts and allow her to swerve around the lies that threaten to throw her off the trail of a killer. As Jordan knows from the many crime stories she's covered, the wicked watch and strike when they think no one's looking. But this time, the scent is just too strong to back away, and so is her determination to arrive at the naked truth. With more than two decades of journalism experience, including six years as the host of the "Deadline: Crime" series on Investigation Discovery, Tamron Hall has a unique wealth of knowledge about the world of crime reporting. Furthermore, sadly, her own personal experience of losing a sister to murder has painfully heightened her understanding of the impact of violent crime. Tamron Hall draws on all of this and more to deliver the dazzling debut volume of her new crime thriller series starring Jordan Manning. A taut, tough, and timely mystery, AS THE WICKED WATCH is a compelling and surprising page turner that gives readers an authentic behind-the-scenes view of the life of a top television crime reporter. At the same time, it offers sharp insights into the racial inequities and other glaring, unacceptable flaws of our criminal justice system.ABOUT TAMRON HALLFrom the deeply moving to the purely fun, "Tamron Hall" is a daily destination for all things topical and a platform for viewers to connect with the people who are shaping our world through meaningful, engaging, and entertaining conversations. It's Plastic-free July and we're talking today with journalist, podcaster and author Amy Westervelt about the surprising resurgence of sustainable plastic claims in the media despite growing public concern. Amy's first Drilled podcast series this season is about plastic and the machinations of one media manipulator, Rick Berman, who launched the Save the Plastic Bag Coalition among many dodgy campaigns backed by tobacco, plastic and oil companies. We also discuss what's coming this season on Drilled and the potential for consumers to reshape the economy by refusing to buy products delivered in plastic packaging, the opportunities to simplify plastic recycling and new molecular recycling options, as well as the role of Plastic-free July in public discourse about the ubiquitous, polluting material. If you are not already listening to her podcast, Drilled, a true-crime style podcast about climate change, you should subscribe. The new season of Drilled started last week. Amy is also the creator of the Critical Frequency podcast network — it focuses on climate issues — and she has written for The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Guardian and NPR. Amy was a 2016 winner of the Edward R. Murrow Award for her exposes on the hidden environmental and human costs of Tesla's Gigafactory in Nevada. GBH News Center For Investigative Reporting launched a report about boy victims of the Sex Trade industry. Many activists who are tackling the abuse of the sex trade industries often ignore the boy victims, and they are often under reported. It is estimated that boys make up at least 30% of the victims, and many of them are boys of color and LGBT. The Boston public media outlet GBH News did their report in two insallments and today we have one of the investigative reporters as our guest. Jenifer B. McKim is a senior investigative reporter at GBH News.. She focuses on social justice issues, including criminal justice, child welfare, sex trafficking and personal debt for print, digital and broadcast. McKim’s investigations have earned numerous awards, including the national Edward R. Murrow Award, a Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism and the Freedom of Information Award from the New England First Amendment Coalition. She was a finalist for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize in Public Service. In the first installment of the series, McKim and fellow reporter, Phillip Martin bring us the perspective of two New England men who survived commercial sexual exploitation as children and are now taking the rare step of speaking out. The second installment dives more into the relationship between sex trafficking and race and centers around Jose Alfaro. As a homeless gay teen, Alfaro was offered a place to stay by a much older man. It seemed like an answer to his prayers, until this man, Jason Gandy, turned out to be a sex trafficker. With co-host Brody Levesque
