Commercialized psychiatric and psychological knowledge encourages us to think of ourselves primarily as consumers and promotes a set of values that suggest some of us have minds or brains that should be ‘fixed' with particular products or services. These neoliberal values have led to a great deal of institutional corruption and also has been exported beyond the western world across the globe. Many researchers, clinicians and activists have rallied together to fight against medicalized global mental health initiatives which promote a narrow westernized notion of wellness and defined how treatment should look, often at the expense of local healing practices and without the participation of people with lived experience. Justin Karter, couseling psychologist, and research news editor at Mad In America, has spent a long time advocating for epistemic justice in the psy disciplines and helping to expose practices and policies that undermine people's human rights and agency. In this episode we discuss: how the political and psychological meet within and outside of therapy commercialization of psychopharmaceuticals and institutional corruption how neoliberalism and capitalist values are embedded in psychiatry the global mental health movement and psychiatric export as a neocolonial practice the ways in which global advocates with lived experience uniting and fighting back the need for epistemic justice, humility, and polyphony legal updates from the UN Committee for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities psychological humanities, mad studies, and other exciting emerging disciples of study Bio: Justin M. — “People in therapy or on a spiritual path are often under the mistaken notion that getting Enlightened means no longer having to deal with a full range of emotions. They hope that Enlightenment will mean living in a permanent state of “bliss” which they translate as “feeling high all the time, like on the best combination of drugs.” In fact, they often begin using meditation and its special states of consciousness to “hide out” from any emotional experience. You can't stifle, suppress, or repress your own emotions; instead, you must learn how to feel your feelings and interpret their purpose skillfully.” Valeria interviews Jonathan Labman — He is the author of “A Therapist's Guide to Being Human and Waking Up." In 1992, Jonathan received his License as a Massage Therapist in New York State. He worked as a Licensed Massage Therapist full-time, while studying and getting certified in Energy Healing (from 1995-1998) and taking two graduate courses in counseling at NYU. In 1998, Jonathan returned to graduate school for a Master of Art with a Concentration on Counseling Psychology. Following that, in 2000 he took a 500-hour Yoga-Alliance Certification as a Yoga Teacher. Jonathan was in private practice as a Counseling Psychologist from 2000-2008, and then returned to corporate life for supervision hours towards a license. He began that process as an Employee Assistance Program Specialist at United Behavioral Health in Philadelphia in 2008 and completed it as an Outpatient Counselor at the Penn Foundation Recovery Center. Upon licensure in late 2010, Jonathan became the Director, The Trauma Treatment Project at the Penn Foundation from 2011-2013. There he worked with a team to implement changes in policies, procedures ,and clinical skills to make Penn Foundation a Trauma-Informed Care Center of Excellence. He was and still is a supervisor for clinician licensure, ran the Adult Trauma Treatment Supervision group, created lectures and trainings on trauma-informed and trauma-specific care, and specialized in individual and group work for people with a history of trauma. Jonathan served on the Montgomery County Trauma-Informed Services Committee and Training Subcommittee and served on the Bucks County Trauma Steering Committee. Jonathan also completed the ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) Workshop and then the ASIST T4T (Training for Trainers) in Denver, CO. In 2013, Jonathan returned to private practice work as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Spiritual Mentor in his private practice Simply Awake LLC. He has run small groups in spiritual awakening since 2001, taught meditation to hundreds of people (including Bucks County administrative staff, and at the Doylestown Hospital Community Health series) and worked with people using the principles of Transpersonal Psychology. Jonathan says, “I have studied human development in its many dimensions for 50 years. I have an entire album of credentials and academic degrees that you may review in my consulting office in Holicong (Buckingham Township), and I'll be happy to answer any professional questions you have. I have been in the human service fields for over 31 years. Ylette reveals that our path in living our purpose is a winding road. Trust and surrender to your higher purpose will help you listen to the signs from the Universe. We are being guided along our way. And we live our purpose within all the roles we play including motherhood. What we learn from this interview is that your purpose is not determined or validated by how much money you make, we all have the same mission to give and receive love. This is the embodiment of the divine feminine and motherhood serves as that role of a life time. This weeks episode of LYP was dedicated to Jayland Walker, his family and friends & the entire city of Akron. I had the opportunity to sit with some of the faith leaders in our city Pastor Jeff Dennis of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and Pastor Lorenzo Glenn of Macedonia Baptist Church who have been diligently working behind the scenes to bring about appropriate justice for Jaylands tragic murder on June 27th. We also were joined by Dr. John Queener a Counseling Psychologist, the local president of National Black Psychology, and one of the most renowned clinicians in the country. This episode was recorded the day before Jaylands funeral, & I spoke to all of these Black Men about how they were taking care or their own mental health, and of course the next steps in seeing Jaylands family receive the proper justice by holding the Akron Police Department Accountable for their actions on June 27th. Spectrum Ohio did a segment to highlight the strength in collaborating with our local leaders right here in our city. I'm thankful for these men for being elders, men of God, & fearless community leaders who's actions are often overlooked but never under appreciated. They spoke honest, vulnerable and left no punches in why this tragedy is completely inexcusable. JUSTICE 4 JAYLAND
