It has been nearly two decades since a Vermonter won a coveted Rhodes Scholarship, widely considered the most prestigious scholarship in the world. The Rhodes Scholarship pays for international students to pursue postgraduate studies for up to three years at Oxford University in England. This week, Lena Ashooh of Shelburne was named a 2025 Rhodes Scholar. She is one of 32 Rhodes Scholars chosen from the U.S. from over 3,000 students who applied. According to the Rhodes Trust, Vermont has had 43 Rhodes Scholars since the first cohort in 1903. The last Rhodes Scholar from Vermont was named in 2006."It's so special to be named a Rhodes Scholar as a Vermonter," said Ashooh. "People have such a special attachment to Vermont, even if they're not from there, it occupies this really beautiful place in their mind. It's a place of respite and joy and progressivism."Lena Ashooh graduated from Champlain Valley Union High School in 2021. At CVU, Ashooh was active with 4-H and she founded Mi Vida, MiVoz (“my life, my voice”), a group that brought together the children of migrant farmworkers in Vermont with other youth to share stories and discuss how to make change. In 2020, she was named one of Vermont's top youth volunteers and was recognized with a national Prudential Spirit of Community Award.Ashooh is now a senior at Harvard. She is pursuing Harvard's first major in animal studies, an interdisciplinary program that she designed that combines philosophy, psychology, biology, and political science. She explained that animal studies is a way to study social injustice.“Looking at the ways that animals were mistreated or their freedom was being restricted also allowed us to attend to ways that people, and specifically vulnerable people, are also being mistreated, being subjected to exploitation or to disease and illness and pollution from farms,” said Ashooh. While in college, Ashooh has lobbied legislators on environmental justice, worked as an intern for Vermont Rep. Becca Balint, and has done research in Puerto Rico on macaque monkeys. She is co-president of Harvard College Animal Advocates and she also plays the classical harp. At Oxford, Ashooh plans to study animal ethics, and address the question: “What does it mean to respect an animal as an individual?”“My hope is that working on this question seriously as it pertains to animals might give us better philosophical concepts to be applied with humans as well. That can enable us to ensure that each person's individual value and the valuing of their contributions can be protected.”Ashooh will pursue a postgraduate degree in philosophy at Oxford and is considering attending law school. She leaves open the possibility of returning to Vermont. “I've always found Vermont to be a front runner in spearheading progressive ideas that might change the way the country is thinking … I think Vermont would be a very exciting place to return to to try out some progressive policies that might help us head down that path towards a brighter future.”

Chase Hartman of Tampa, Florida, is a community changemaker and youth leader dedicated to finding solutions to some of the country's toughest challenges. Eighteen-year-old Chase co-founded a non-profit called Eco Brothers and an award-winning book distribution project called “read.repeat.”.  Focusing his efforts on improving literacy rates, he's collected and distributed more than 225,000 books and impacted the lives of more than 65,000 students in Hillsborough County, Florida.  Chase champions the need for more books-with-diversity and dual language books in local Title-1 schools and has worked to raise more than $150,000 to improve literacy and run environmental projects in his state. Chase enjoys the challenges of leadership opportunities and served as Senior Patrol Leader in Boy Scout Troop 46, where he also achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.  For the service project required for this respected rank, he designed and planted a butterfly garden at his former elementary school and purchased butterfly habitats for each classroom to learn more about the importance of the declining monarch butterfly.  He's attended leadership workshops through Boy Scouts with the National Youth Leadership Training and also at American University with the National Student Leadership Conference. Full transcription available at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ In this episode of Hearts of Gold, we hear from Himani, who shares her Girl Scout Gold Award project called "Project Save the Girl Child." Himani's project aims to raise awareness about the issue of female gendercide, which is the preference for a male child over a female child in patriarchal societies. She educates people about the consequences of this issue through gendercide awareness seminars and distributing brochures in India. Himani also partners with an organization called the Invisible Girl Project to rescue girls who are at high risk of being victims of female gendercide in India. Tune in to learn more about this important project and its impact. More about Himani: Himani Kalra is a Gold Award Girl Scout from Atlanta. Her project "Save the Girl Child" worked to raise awareness of female gendercide and promote gender equality through education and healthcare for underprivileged girls in Georgia and India. Himani partnered with over 40 global organizations to promote girl empowerment and is the Youth Brand Ambassador for the Invisible Girl Project working to end gendercide in India. She designed a science curriculum to empower refugee girls in Clarkston for future STEM careers, and has fundraised enough to set up five village schools with the Ekal Foundation and donated 36,000 books and educational supplies for girls in the Delhi slum districts. Himani was a Girl Scout Council Young Woman of Distinction and National Gold Award Scholarship recipient. She has been recognized as a Prudential Spirit of Community Distinguished Finalist, an honoree of the George W Bush Point of Light Awards, and is a two-time recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. Outside of Girl Scouts, Himani is a nationally ranked fencer, Kathak classical dancer, bassoon player, and avid travel enthusiast. Links: Website: https://www.savethegirlchild.org/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/people/Save-The-Girl-Child/100064826106012/ Key takeaways from the episode: Take Charge of Your Passion: Himani's project, Project Save the Girl Child, was inspired by her personal experiences and passion for addressing the issue of female gender side. Her advice to other Girl Scouts is to identify a cause or passion they are interested in and see how far they can take it. The Gold Award provides a platform to make a difference and learn valuable skills along the way. Overcoming Challenges: Himani faced challenges in tackling a culturally and politically sensitive topic as a high school student. She had to educate people about an issue that many were unaware of or reluctant to discuss. However, she persevered and found ways to raise awareness and make connections with organizations and individuals who could support her cause. The Power of Connection: Himani's experience at Camp CEO taught her the importance of finding connections with others, regardless of age or professional background. She realized that meaningful conversations and relationships can be formed in unexpected places, and these connections can lead to new opportunities and growth. Empowering Girls through Education: Himani's project aimed to empower girls through education and healthcare, challenging the mindset that devalues girls in certain societies. By providing girls with equal access to education and healthcare, their potential can be recognized and society can be transformed. This takeaway highlights the importance of investing in girls' education and breaking down gender barriers to create a more equitable future. The issue of female gendercide is a serious problem in many Asian countries, where there is a preference for male children over female children. Himani's project, "Project Save the Girl Child," aims to raise awareness about this issue and its consequences on societies and populations. Himani's project was inspired by personal experiences, including being the second daughter in an Asian household and witnessing gender inequalities during her visits to India. She also drew inspiration from her grandmother, who was a doctor and emphasized the importance of education and support for her daughters. Himani's project has continued to grow even after her Gold Award project, and she plans to expand it further in New York City. Share this show with your friends on Twitter.
