In the third hour, Dave Softy Mahler and Dick Fain chat with former UW basketball star Quincy Pondexter about returning to Washington, then the guys discuss the state of the Mariners right now after getting swept and the Seahawks line for wins at Vegas books.
Former UW basketball star Quincy Pondexter joins Dave Softy Mahler and Dick Fain to talk about returning to the Huskies, his role with Washington, Wesley Yates also coming back to the program, Danny Sprinkle running the program, and immediate impact guys.
The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds and Chris Fetters - were at Husky Stadium Saturday afternoon to watch the Washington Huskies go through their paces during Day 6 of spring football. The day started out under beautiful Seattle skies but finished with rain. That didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the team, however, as they took part in a scrimmage to end practice that lasted at least a half an hour. On offense, the running backs continued to show out, and because of a lack of available bodies at tight end it was Kade Eldridge, the USC transfer, that got plenty of turns to make his mark today. Kim and Chris talked about his day, as well as the day had by receiver Justice Williams, the redshirt freshman from Oaks Christian. After a quick break the guys turn to the other side of the ball, and on defense it was once again a case for Elinneus Davis making some big plays, Utah transfer Simote Pepa getting the most work he's seen so far this spring, and also the emergence of Northern Arizona transfer safety Alex McLaughlin as a sure tackler as he singlehandedly brought down Jonah Coleman, Adam Mohammed, and Julian McMahan, UW's three big running backs. Before the podcast ended, the guys had to talk about the run Danny Sprinkle and the men's basketball staff are having on the recruiting trail. In the last few days they got Wesley Yates III to return to Montlake after a year at USC, and then on Friday they received a commitment from Jasir Rencher, a wing from the Bay Area who had signed with Texas A&M but got out of his letter after Aggies Head Coach Buzz Williams left for Maryland. How will the Huskies finish out their recruiting class? Does Sprinkle still have a trick or two up his sleeve? And will Quincy Pondexter come back to coach at UW? The USC Triple-Double Podcast -- the Peristyle Podcast's basketball-focused podcast -- returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) previewing No. 7 USC women's basketball's showdown with No. 4 Connecticut and breaking down the last week of action at the Galen Center where the Women of Troy earned their third 50+ point victory and the USC men went 2-0 with a pair of blowout victories. Also special guest USC women's head coach Lindsay Gottlieb joins the show to chat about the upcoming Elite Eight rematch with Geno Auriemma and the UConn Huskies and discuss where the Trojans have shown improvements since losing a marquee matchup against Notre Dame. She also talks about how sophomore sensation JuJu Watkins has improved her game in certain areas that UConn tried to attack last season and how Watkins, Kiki Iriafen and the rest of the Trojans are finding ways to complement each other's game on both the offensive and defensive ends. Shotgun and Connor also look at where the men and women's programs stand as they finish up their non-conference schedules with the Women of Troy playing in Hartford, Conn. against the Huskies and the USC men closing out their non-conference schedule with a Sunday matchup against Southern. The Guys from the Husky Hoops Pod on DawgmanRadio, Jack McCauley, Noah Dickerson, and Jason Crandall are back with another episode, and this time there's a ton of things to talk about ahead of Washington's first ever B1G home game versus USC. To start, they talk about the Huskies currently having the No. 1 recruiting class in the Big Ten for 2025, having signed four players - JJ Mandaquit, Courtland Muldrew, Niko Bundalo, and Mady Traore. Noah adds an anecdote about his own recruitment and how he visited Washington and immediately committed to another school! Next, the guys recap the Acrisure Invitational Championship, where Washington beat Colorado State on Thanksgiving and then Santa Clara the following day to bring the hardware home to Montlake. They talked about the things they saw that went well, what needs improvement, and overall how hopeful they are of success from this group of Hoop Dawgs moving forward. After a quick break the guys talk about Washington first-ever Big Ten road game at UCLA, where they lost by 11. What did they see from that game? And what is it going to take in order for the Huskies to break through? The guys also talk about certain key themes to the season so far that have started to forge the identity of the team, like the lack of offense, how the offense revolves around Great Osobor, free throw shooting (Noah has a revelation on this topic!), and more. UW Head Coach Danny Sprinkle has comped Noah and Great, so Noah offers his thoughts (Jason too) on Great's game and where improvement is going to come over the course of the year. The Huskies are now back in Seattle after the UCLA game and they next play USC Saturday afternoon. What about the Trojans? They react to St. Mary's holding the Trojans to 36 points and they just lost to Oregon in LA too. What are the guys expecting from Saturday's game, and more specifically how can the Huskies add to the Trojans' woes and at the same time maintain their 100 percent home winning record? Jason offers up some insight into a factor you might not think about when it comes to having a home-court advantage. And both Noah and Jason have strong connections to former UW Coaches Will Conroy and Quincy Pondexter, who are both now at USC. Are they having mixed emotions about seeing the former Dawgs on the other side of the court? Here's a hint; for guys outside the area, it didn't matter as much, but for the local guys? It's everything. Jack jumps ahead and asks Noah and Jason about the upcoming Washington State game, one where the Huskies will be hosting former UW player Nate Calmese. And how do they think Sprinkle will deal with his first game against WSU as Washington's head coach? Sprinkle was born in Pullman! To wrap up this most recent hoops pod, Jack asks Noah and Jason; what aspects need to improve in these next handful of games before Big Ten play ramps up in earnest in January? #173: Lorenzo Romar is one of college basketball's all time winningest and most accomplished coaches. More importantly he is one of the most respected coaches. He has served as the head coach at the University of Washington, Pepperdine, and Saint Louis. He is currently an assistant coach a Loyola Marymount University. As a head coach, he's had 18 players taken in the NBA Draft. As either a head coach or an assistant, he's worked with 27 future NBA Draft picks. During his time in Washington alone he coached several future NBA players including Brandon Roy, Nate Robinson, Isaiah Thomas, Quincy Pondexter, Spencer Hawes, and top-overall pick Markelle Fultz. As the Head Coach of Washington, the Huskies played in six NCAA Tournaments, three NITs and one CBI, and won 298 games. Additional accolades in Romar's decorated career include winning the Pac-10/Pac-12 regular season twice (2009, 2012), winning the Pac-10/Pac-12 Tournament three times (2005, 2010, 2011), being named Pac-10/Pac-12 Coach of the Year three times (2005, 2009, 2012), and winning the Conference USA Tournament (2000).Coach Romar was drafted in the 1980 NBA Draft and played 5 seasons in the NBA with the Warriors, Bucks, and Pistons. He started at Cerritos Community College and then went on to play at Washington, where he was a two-year starter at point guard and was the team captain as a senior. On the show Coach Romar shares his story of growing up in Compton, influence of his parents, his love for basketball, resilience, playing in the NBA, Athletes in Action, getting into coaching, faith, family, values, and much more.As I was getting into coaching Coach Romar was one of the main coaches I wanted to learn from and I spent a tremendous amount of time just to have the opportunity to be around him and his program. He gave me some of the best advice during my coaching journey. One of the men I respect the most not only for the success that he has had, but the type of person that he is. I'm excited to share his story with you all. Enjoy the show!
The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - took a day to absorb the fallout from the news that Washington Athletic Director Troy Dannen would be leaving UW after 167 days on the job to take the same job at Nebraska. And while today is the first day of what is traditionally known as 'March Madness', UW fans have been dealing lately with an entirely different type of madness. Why? Why now? And for what purpose? So many questions, and even a day later many of those questions remain only partially answered. In the first part of the podcast, they talk about their initial reactions to the news, how this will affect things like buyouts moving forward, and also why they think Dannen's move happened now, rather than years from now. There are a number of stories that have surfaced in the last 24 hours since Dannen's departure that have certainly illuminated the situation and helped clarify some of the reasons that may have been leading Dannen out the door after less than six months on the job. After a quick break, most of the rest of the podcast talks about the vacant men's head basketball coaching position, how Dannen's departure fits into the hiring timeline for UW - did he put in enough legwork behind the scenes to allow interim AD Erin O'Connell to push a hire across the line? Will it be Utah State Head Coach Danny Sprinkle, as has been long rumored? Will the AD have to completely reset their list of candidates and go in a different direction entirely? Will they wait until a permanent AD is hired before tackling the process of making the next hire? And where is Will Conroy's place in all of this? Will he come back with an interim tag as part of an eventual move to make him Washington's next head coach? What about Quincy Pondexter's future? Ben Lee's? Mike Hopkins? The guys talk about that, the role Parker Executive Search will have in making UW's next hires. They were the group Washington used in the hiring of Jedd Fisch, their newest deputy AD Haven Fields, and they were also the group responsible for Nebraska's AD search. There's also a quick recruiting update from Scott and we wrap things up with an update on one of our favorite contributors - AANDY - and also comment on Dannen's prepared statement to Washington fans that he posted on social networks as we were wrapping up our show. As expected, three games into the 2016-17 season, Anthony Davis is putting up monster averages of 37.7 points, 12.3 rebounds, 3.0 blocks and 2.7 steals per game, including an almost unfathomable performance in the season opener where he racked up 50 points, 17 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 blocks, and 5 steals against the Denver Nuggets. Unfortunately, for all his effort, the Pelicans still have no wins to show for it. Mason Ginsberg of ESPN Truehoop's Bourbon Street Shots takes us through what the Pelicans need to do over the course of this season to turn that around. Additionally, he expounds on the disappointment of last year's injury-filled season, the many roster moves made in the offseason and need for a sense of urgency around the team.5:12-5:26 on how Quincy Pondexter's injury last season affected the team and his uncertain timetable to return this season:"Quincy [Pondexter] was their only plus defender who could really stretch the floor and [needed to be] defended from the 3-point line and missing him was just huge. Again, it’d be really helpful to get him back, but no real certainty on when that’s going to happen."10:13-11:05 On his feelings about Anthony Davis's still developing game and the myriad of injuries he has suffered over his career:"He's only 23 years old still. He’s developing into more of a stronger figure. That’s going to help him play more minutes at the 5, which he vocally did not want to do at the start of his career… I think now he’s realizing where the NBA game is going; he’s been playing more and more 5 every year. I’m optimistic about AD from an injury perspective. There’s been nothing that really sticks out as a major red flag… All things considered, I’d rather have him have a bunch of random injuries than keep injuring the same thing over and over again"15:23-15:46 Setting expectations for Buddy Hield's rookie season:"Watching him play, from what I’ve seen so far, it’s almost ironic because it seems as much a confidence issue than anything. He’s timid, he’s not playing with the same kind of confidence that you saw at Oklahoma or even sometimes in the preseason. I think he’s going to be fine, again, small sample size, but he’s also a rookie. He’s going to struggle on defense. He’s going to turn the ball over. He’s going to help space the floor for the Pelicans, but he’s also going to hurt them too."18:00-18:42 On the many offseason acquisitions for the Pelicans:"The additions they’ve had this offseason are to really shore up that defense and give Darren Ermon, who they brought in basically as their defensive coordinator, some tools to work with. The number of times last season I saw him just throw his hands up in the air in disgust on the sideline was too many to count. It was rough. Now they have guys who can defend multiple positions, who can switch on screens a little more."22:25-22:58 On the future role for Tyreke Evans:"It just really seems like all of the Pelicans moves this offseason were made with the thought of Tyreke not really being a fac...Learn more about your ad choices. Bem amigos do Bola Presa, podcast no ar!
