My guest today is Linda Quiquivix (ki-ki-vish) a California-based geographer of Maya roots and author and illustrator of Palestine 1492: A Report Back, a political memoir and geography lesson, that places 500 years of struggles side by side with Palestine, from below and toward the common. As Quiquivix write, the book is “a report back of what I see from 500 years of struggle in words, maps, and images in the 7 cardinal directions and in the spiral that is time. Throughout, I share conclusions of what Palestinians, Zapatistas, Panthers, and Jaguars have taught me along this journey….” I devoured the book in a few sittings. As you listen to QuiQui talk about her book and more, you will get why. Jamie is joined by Jensen, an activist who was on the ground for the most intense portion of the anti-ICE actions at the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, NJ. They discuss the history of the privately-run GEO group facility and how it developed to this point of crisis. What tactics were used by prisoners inside the facility and protesters outside, and what limits did they come up against? The feckless behavior of local Democrats like Newark mayor Ras Baraka. The implications of state repression. And why is migrant defense a strategic area for revolutionaries to intervene in? Hello, I'm Eric LeMay, a host on the New Books Network. Today I speak with Linda Quiquivix, author of the new book Palestine 1492: A Report Back (Wild Ox Books, 2024). This is a book that so many of us need right now, and by "right now," I mean that I am recording this in July of 2025, when Palestinians in Gaza are on the verge of mass starvation as a result of a manufactured and illegal famine imposed by the Israeli army. Some 2.2 million people are experiencing "acute food insecurity," to use the United Nation's official phrasing for people being illegally deprived of humanitarian aid and forced to starve to death. Right now, we are witnessing horror on a mass scale, made all the more horrible because this is wholly preventable. Right now, we need voices who can help us to understand why this is happening, how it is we got here, and what we might do in response. Quiquivix offers us such a voice. In Palestine 1492, she undertakes a rich and wide-ranging analysis to show us how such colonial violence emerged and how we might resist it. In fact, Quiquivix goes further, sharing with us a political vision that strive toward peace, equality, and mutual acceptance of one another across our differences. A world, in short, without the violence done through and to uphold borders. I'm grateful to share with you this conversation with Linda Quiquivix. Learn more about your ad choices. On today's episode I talk with geographer, artist, photographer, and activist Linda Quiquivix about her new book: Palestine 1492: A Report Back. Combining her work learning and working alongside the Zapatistas and Palestinians, and incorporating anti-fascist politics from the Black Panthers, Quiquivix reaches back to the 15th century to see the beginnings of the Western project to carve the surface of the planet into spaces to be both shared and wrestled over by those Above. Instead, Linda asks us to walk side by side with those Below. She writes, “what might it look like what might it feel like, to walk with the Below? To place yourself under fire with the Below, so that the need to shake off fascism becomes a shared necessity for you, too? I do not know, but I hope we will find out together because there's no blueprint. From the Zapatistas I learn to ask questions as we walk. From Aida Camp I learn sometimes we must ask questions as we jump. May we learn the answers together.”Dr. Linda Quiquivix is a geographer, illustrator, and popular educator of Maya-Mam roots, raised by Palestinians, Zapatistas, Panthers, and jaguars. Her work centers on decolonial land struggles that challenge us to share the world with all our difference, a world “where all worlds fit.” She is author of Palestine 1492: A Report Back (Wild Ox Books, 2024), a visual and literary exploration that weaves Palestine into global struggles across 500 years. Quiquivix is also a co-editor of “The Fourth World War: Zapatista Writings on Global Capital 1997-2023” (Paliacate Press, 2024). Learn more about her work at quiqui.org

With Summer behind us and the touch of Autumn on the horizon, it's time to say a fond and lengthy farewell to the 2024 garden season. But that's not to say there is still a tremendous amount of gardening to be done. Lucy will be revelling in her Fruit and Veg as Autumn is the crescendo of harvest time, and Saul will be willing an Indian Summer so his last few exotics can flower before tucking them away for some well deserved winter rest. Otherwise there are still lawns to cut, leaves to be racked and a lot of planning for 2025!This week Saul and Lucy catch up with some of our loyal listeners' questions - there are plenty to get through! Sian in Ireland has bindweed in her beds, Andrew and Dee want to establish a mini meadow in their garden, Ben's raspberry beds need a re-vamp and Matt's looking for a compact tomato variety for his greenhouse pots. On top of all that, Lucy reports back on her recent RHS committees study tour of the South West, where she found it incredible who you could bump into on a sunny garden bench...
