A city soundscape drifts through the open window of Stuart's lounge as we hit record, sirens, engines, and all the usual urban visitors. We never see the questions to be discussed beforehand, we dive in completely cold. That way, when you press play, you're discovering the conversation at the exact same moment we are. Anders, from Kent, England set today's first listener question - “South East Water have been giving out water bottles to the public during the water supply problems in Kent in January 2026, but some of the vulnerable aren't being supported until community spirit kicks in. The CEO has marked the company at 8 out of 10 for how they've reacted to the problems. In this day and age England should be better than this. This isn't a third world country after all!”Stuart and William dive into how societies handle problems, from water companies to community action, arguing that resilience matters more than pretending issues shouldn't exist. Stuart challenges the “third world country” cliché, stressing that real strength lies in how quickly people adapt, while William unpicks why leaders often overrate their own performance. Together, they explore the gap between leadership narratives and on‑the‑ground reality, the limits of CEO perspective, and the power of global localism when communities take action where they live. Ross, from Dublin, Republic Of Ireland set the next question for Stuart and William to delve into - “The Iranian uprising in early 2026 has seen the ruling regime cut off internet access to combat and suppress. Doesn't this show that protests are too reliant on the internet? What did the world's uprisings of the past use before the internet? If peoples want to overthrow, then surely they need to be more adaptive?”Stuart and William, your co-hosts, explore how movements spread ideas, past and present, from the days of couriers and public orators to today's encrypted platforms. Stuart questions whether true secrecy is even possible anymore, while William argues that our sense of “internet dependence” is often exaggerated. Drawing on historic figures like Henry Hunt and modern protests such as HS2, they unpick why challenging systems takes far more than intention, and why resistance can still matter even when it doesn't change the final outcome. This week Tim Sherwood and Natalie Pike sit down with former Liverpool & Republic Of Ireland midfielder Jason McAteer to discuss all things football from Tottenham's worrying season to where does Salah rank amongst Liverpool greats? They start the pod by chatting about Cheltenham this week, why footballers love a day out at the races and why Jason wants his ICONIC white Liverpool suit back from Helen Chamberlain. The trio then discuss in detail the future of Spurs manager Igor Tudor, the big red flags he's showing as Tottenham boss & why they are now the favourites for relegation out of Leeds, Forest & West Ham.Tim, Jason & Natalie then chat about Liverpool's links to Spurs defender Micky Van der Ven, Why Salah's leadership skills shows that he isn't the issue at Liverpool & why the pressure is still on Arne Slot despite winning their last 4 games.Tim & Jason then discuss where Mo Salah ranks amongst the Liverpool greats, who makes up his top 5 greatest Liverpool players of all time and which player had the best individual one season in Liverpool's history. They then talk about why teams outside of the traditional 'big 6' are disrespecting the FA Cup after Fulham & Sunderland made changes before their FA Cup exits before debating is Joao Pedro an elite forward alongside Haaland, Kane & Mbappe.Jason then gives an honest answer when asked about his old trigger nickname in football and why he's wanted to fit in at Liverpool having started his career in non-league before now having a masters degree. Finally we end the pod with Tim & Jason saying who they believe will be the managers of Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham & Chelsea on the first game of next season before Jason tells the story of how he reconciled with former Ireland teammate Jason McAteer.
Episode Notes Netherlands 2-1 Republic of Ireland | Ireland Unlucky? The Republic of Ireland Women suffered another narrow defeat as the Netherlands edged a 2-1 win, but there were plenty of positives to take from the performance. In this episode of Girls in the Game, we break down Ireland's display against the Dutch — from Anna Patten's standout performance, Emily Murphy's impressive impact, and the tactical shift to a more attacking system under Carla Ward. Despite the defeat, Ireland showed courage and attacking intent, going toe-to-toe with one of Europe's strongest teams. A penalty brought Ireland level before a late Dutch winner sealed the result, echoing the heartbreak of the France game. The discussion also looks ahead to the crucial double-header against Poland, where Ireland will hope to turn strong performances into vital points. Women's football continues to grow rapidly worldwide, with major tournaments such as the FIFA Women's World Cup demonstrating both the popularity and financial viability of the women's game, helping drive greater visibility and support for national teams. ⚽ Topics discussed: Ireland's performance vs Netherlands Tactical changes under Carla Ward Anna Patten's outstanding display Emily Murphy's development Set-piece threats and attacking patterns Injury concerns around Denise O'Sullivan Preview of the Poland double-header Are Ireland unlucky… or are they building something bigger? Ireland has been drawn against Czechia in the World Cup qualifiers. For the latest on this former Ireland manager, Brian Kerr and our Soccer Correspondent, Tony O'Donoghue.
So now we know, the World Cup play-off fixtures have been announced: Republic of Ireland will play Czech Republic away on March 26th, and if they win, they will play Denmark or North Macedonia in Dublin on March 31st.Northern Ireland will play Italy away, and if they win, they will be away again to Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina. The playoffs are knockout matches so it could all end on March 26th, but what if it doesn't?Can Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson bring the team to the World Cup? That's a dream that even the most diehard fans, looking at the dismal start to the qualifying campaign, had all but given up on. But then there was the win over Portugal – a victory that not only made a trip to the tournament a possibility but kept the manager in a job.Irish Times soccer correspondent Gavin Cummiskey spoke to Hallgrímsson after the draw.
