He played the organ at his father's church at age 10. PAUSE He was home-schooled early-on by his mother and worked in a grocery store. He quit high school after just one semester at age 15 to work as an organist at the Lincoln Theater in Harlem. PAUSE At the Lincoln Theater, he earned $32 a week.  That was 1929.  He became known as “Fats Waller” because he was big -- both in body and in mind.  PAUSE Fats Waller laid some of the building blocks for what is NOW ‘modern jazz piano'. He popularized the use of The stride piano style,  which is widely used by jazz pianists today. He toured internationally and two of his biggest hits were Ain't Misbehavin' and Honeysuckle Rose. PAUSE You are listening to Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child by  Fats Waller) Recorded back in 1943.PAUSE Waller copyrighted over 400 songs. He probably composed many more, but, when he was in financial difficulty, he would sell songs to other writers and performers, who would not acknowledge the real composer, claiming the songs as their own.   Today's podcast features Fats Waller and a few of his SOLO piano and organ compositions that were recorded between the years 1926 and 1943, or from the age of 22 to 39.  Some of these songs are not available today, except where they are rediscovered - - - on my old and treasured Fats Waller record collection! SHOW PLUG - SHOW PLUG - DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL ! ! BIT BUCKET Waller is also credited with his composition and performance work in Broadway Musicals. Waller is perhaps the FIRST BLACK composer to write the score and perform for a mostly all-white show on Broadway. That was the 1943 Broadway musical EARLY TO BED, produced by Richard Kollmar – the Broadway Flyer for EARLY TO BED reads “Music by Thomas (“Fats”) Waller”. . M1 M1 Squeeze Me  (Thomas Waller) Rec. 2/14/1926, FATS WALLER EARLY UNDISCOVERED SOLOS, Riverside Records RLP 12-103, 1955 (2:55) Our first recording is titled “SQUEEZE ME” It's a piano solo, and the composer and performer is Thomas Waller. He is not billed as “Fats” Waller yet, as he is not that unusually large at the young age of 22. This song SQUEEZE ME was recorded for production of piano rolls in 1926, making this among Waller's EARLIEST recordings. Waller recorded his piano solos for the production of Piano Rolls between 1926 and 1927.These rolls operate on player pianos. Insert the roll, and the piano plays the song. PAUSE The player piano is a specialty item, affordable by the wealthy, and not a great way to release new music to the masses. Decades later, in 1955,

Niners win again, (10 in a row!), defeating Cards 38-13 to secure 2nd seed in the NFC and a Wild Card weekend home game vs our close friends from the north, the Seattle Seahawks, who come in as the 7th seed after an OT win over the Rams. All good in our win vs the Cards, we moved the ball well especially in the 2nd half and with the score was able to rest some people in the 4th quarter. This is the first time in years the Niners have swept the entire Western Division. Mr. Bosa gets another sack to finish the year with 18.5, and all systems are go for this weekend in the 1st round of the playoffs. Now it is win or go home, and 3 games to the NFC Championship game, and 4 to win it all in the Super Bowl. This is what it is all about and what the team has been working towards all year. It is so hard to do and we will spend time in appreciation of the accomplishments of this season with an eye to the challenges that lie ahead. But this is what this organization is always about – CHAMPIONSHIPS!! Excited and ready to. Secure the hatches and let's go get it!! This week Emma and I talk through the 2023 All Pro team (congrats to all who were named including 4 from the Niners on the 1st team (Bosa, Hufanga, Trent Williams, and Fred), and 2 Niners on the 2nd team (son George along with special teams player George Odum!!). Very happy for all of them and well deserved. We also review the playoffs, the best matchups and likely next games, and take a look at Seattle and the issues with defeating a team 3 times in 1 year (NOT!!)! We also introduce a HPP exclusive release of Emma's “Recipes for Wellness.” This is an offering she/we have been working on over the past year. Power Project Episode #90: Breaking the Cycle of Failure & Stepping Into Success

The Power Project Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 25, 2020 36:41

In this episode, we are discussing the cycle of failure and how it keeps us from stepping into success. I mentor women that have endured terrible trauma in their past. They've been through situations that were sometimes a direct consequence of their own poor choices and others that were not. Most of the women have criminal records. I teach a weekly course at an aftercare home for survivors of sexual exploitation and trafficking. The course is a combination of business & life coaching. While I help them to realize their gifts and skills as well as acquire the skills necessary for gainful employment, we also do a deep dive on emotional and mental roadblocks, unpacking past hurt, releasing shame and guilt, and taking responsibility for our own actions. I've now taught 4 different groups of women in this course, and we inevitably reach the same point each time. It's the midway point. Halfway through the course, this is where they start experiencing overwhelm, self-doubt, fear, and… this is typically where, if they are going to, they choose to leave the program. Reasons we don't break free from the cycle of failure: 1. Fear of SuccessSuccess doesn't feel comfortable. Failure is familiar. When we become overwhelmed and afraid, we revert to familiar behaviors. How did we feel with overwhelm before? Did we quit? Did we run away? Did we lean on unhealthy coping mechanisms? What has happened in the past when we have attempted to succeed? 2. Fear of the unknown: The devil we know is better than the one we don't. Jer. 29: 11 “For I know the plans I have for you. Declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” God knows these plans. We don't, and oftentimes, it seems much more comfortable to believe in the past hurt we know than the hope of the future. It's hard to imagine something we've never seen before. Exile came before the hope. It doesn't mean it's going to be easy, but that we must trust God's plan and persevere. 3. Fear of New Identity (Accepting Failure as your identity) When people have a line of bad choices & behaviors, this becomes part of their identity. People label them as a failure. However, when they take the steps to break the cycle, they step into a new identity. One where they are no longer the person of their past. This new identity requires them to be held accountable. The excuse of “that's just the way they are no longer applies.” They have a new name. Col. 3:9 -10 “…you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.” 4. Fear of Accountability: When transitioning from failure to success, you have to take responsibility for your actions and make changes. 1 Cor. 13:11
When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. “5 Ways to Break the Cycle of Failure & Step Into Success 1. Take accountability for your actions. Recognize write or wrong choices that have led us to where we are. Own them without absorbing the guilt and shame. Recognize them as obstacles along the way that do not identify you. Acknowledge that who you were is not who you are today. 2. Recognize a time in your past that you turned an obstacle into an opportunity or a failure into a success. 3. Identify a time that you stepped through fear. Celebrate that moment as a victory. (RFW: the resident came to the program) 4. Remember a moment of power: a sense of accomplishment. What did that feel like? How much joy was in your heart? Who told you that you couldn't. How did it feel to prove them wrong? 5. Imagine what it will feel like when you (accomplish this hard thing) you're standing on the stage at graduation. What are you wearing? How is your hair fixed? Who is in the audience? What friends and family are there with you? How proud do you feel about this accomplishment? How much joy do you have in your heart? How will it feel when you are able to share this success? Claim your victory.Write your victory statement: I have accomplished ________________________________________________________________Whatever goal that you are holding back from accomplishing right now)Visualize the feeling of success. Close your eyes and imagine what life feels like on the other side of that statement. Just because we haven't seen it before doesn't mean we can't imagine it. Visualize what your life looks like on the other side. What does your life look like after achieving this victory. Write a letter to yourself: Dear Self, I want you to know that you are: __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________(strength & overwhelming characteristics: ex. *A child of God, fearfully and wonderfully made, resilient, persistent, forgiven, redeemed, worthy)You have __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________(statement of triumph: Overcome addiction, survived abuse/trauma, saved a bankrupt business) You possess all the _______________________ (knowledge, talent, gifts, skills) to accomplish ____________________________________________________________________________________You are committed to ___________________________________________________________(putting in the work and taking the action steps necessary to complete this goal because the success that lies on the other side of this challenge is worth every step of the journey.) From now on, anytime I feel like giving up on a goal, or turning back to a cycle of failure because the fear of success is too great, I promise to go back and read this letter to myself. I promise to constantly seek success and not fear the unknown, but embrace the plans that God has for me. LOVE, YOUR SUCCESSFUL SELF STANDING ON THE SIDE OF VICTORY

Today in Part 1, I will canvass solo performances of Fats Waller of his recordings between 1929 and 1939, when he was between the ages of 25 and 35. Today’s show is called Fats Waller Piano and Organ Solos. . . . THOMAS WRIGHT WALLER was born May 21, 1904 in NYC, the youngest of 11 children. He started pl aying piano at age six. His father was the Reverend Edward Martin Waller . By the time Thomas was 10, he had learned how to play the organ at his father’s church. At age 14, he was playing the organ at Harlem Lincoln’s Theater. Fats Waller is best known for his stride piano style. At age 15 Fats was a professional pianist and worked the local cabarets and theatres. Some of his original compositions are well known standards today, like Honeysuckle Rose, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Handful of Keys, Squeeze Me, Blue Turnin Grey Over You. Recordings of Fats Waller were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, first in 1984, the song Honeysuckle Rose, and again in 1998 the song Ain’t Misbehavin’. Thomas Waller earned the nickname “Fats” at an early age, because as a Harlem ten year old boy, he was very heavy, over 250 pounds, and for the remainder of his life, his weight would stay between 280 and 300. Fats Waller was hard-working and trained in music theory and in the piano classics. He was prolific and there are some 360 songs credited to him during his short lifetime of 39 years. In terms of music performance, he preferred small groups to big bands, and preferred to lead groups of 6-8 men. ` We will hear piano and organ solo performances by Fats Waller from 1929, during the time of the Great Depression, and 1939, the start of WW II in Europe, the invasion by Nazi Germany into Poland.
