On today’s podcast: Tesla is preparing to launch Full Self-Driving subscription Buy the Only 220-MPH Rimac Concept One on the Market UK Police & Fire services buy Peugeot electric vehicles Accelerated electrode drying could reduce battery production cost Tesla Battery Day could introduce us to the world of dry electrode manufacturing ChargePoint reportedly closer to going public Golf GTE Reviewed Show #895 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 21st September 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketlace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA IS PREPARING TO LAUNCH FULL SELF-DRIVING SUBSCRIPTION "Tesla is preparing to launch a new Full Self-Driving monthly subscription based on an update to its mobile app and it is putting a deadline on the newly reintroduced Enhanced Autopilot package." writes electrek: "Elon Musk confirmed that Tesla planned to release such an option “toward the end of the year”. With the FSD package’s price back into focus as Tesla reintroduced its Enhanced Autopilot package yesterday, we see evidence that the subscription launch might be imminent. While Tesla has had codes to prepare for a new subscription model for a while, this update closer to the end of the year could indicate that Tesla is preparing to soon release the new way to access its Full Self-Driving software. When confirming plans to offer a monthly subscription to access the features, Musk made it clear that buying the FSD package will remain the best option financially" https://electrek.co/2020/09/20/tesla-full-self-driving-subscription-deadline-enhanced-autopilot/ BUY THE ONLY 220-MPH RIMAC CONCEPT ONE ON THE MARKET "hat we have here is the only Rimac Concept One coupe on sale right. Yes, that Rimac Concept One, the ultra-rare electric hypercar Richard Hammond famously drove off a cliff in 2017 while filming an episode of The Grand Tour. Only eight were built, seven remain, and this is an incredibly rare chance for someone to acquire one of the fastest electric cars on earth. For $1.6 million—electric speed isn't cheap." writes The Drive: "The Rimac One is all-electric using a 90-kWh battery and four hub-mounted electric motors generating 1,224 horsepower and 1,180 pound-feet of instant torque. According to Rimac, this kind of performance allows the Concept One to reach zero to 60 in under 2.5 seconds and run silently all the way up to 220 mph. There’s not a lot of information on this car except that it has a little over 100 miles on the clock." https://www.thedrive.com/news/36559/nows-your-chance-to-buy-the-only-220-mph-rimac-concept-one-on-the-market UK POLICE & FIRE SERVICES BUY PEUGEOT ELECTRIC VEHICLES "Peugeot is seeing growing demand from UK Police and Fire services for electrified vehicles. The French company said, 13 per cent of the cars ordered were all-electric with the e-208 being among the bestsellers to serve in British emergency services." says electrive: "The all-new e-208, launched in January this year, accounted for 81 vehicles within the final total of 611 cars to 38 forces. These vehicles delivered have been put to operational use, supporting frontline activity across the UK, according to the Peugeot press information. The other vehicles on order include 308 and 308 SW, Traveller, 3008 SUV and 5008 SUV, Partner, Expert and Boxer vans as well as the all-new 208 and said e-208. Mayn of these are from Peugeot’s electrified line-up on offer in the UK." https://www.electrive.com/2020/09/20/uk-police-fire-services-buy-peugeot-electric-vehicles/ ACCELERATED ELECTRODE DRYING COULD REDUCE BATTERY PRODUCTION COST "The quality of Li-ion battery cells depends on the electrode layers that store the battery’s energy. Both the anode and the cathode material are applied in a thin layer of water-based or solvent-based paste onto a conducting foil made of copper (anode) and aluminum (cathode). Researchers of KIT’s Thin Film Technology (TFT) group developed a coating process that allows electrodes to be produced in less time than with traditional methods." says ChargedEVs: "EPIC focuses on energy-efficient drying technologies and optimal moisture management for the materials used along the process chain, from drying to cell assembly. TFT studies conventional drying processes, high-power radiators and drying management in general." TFT’s Dr. Philip Scharfer: "Higher coating speeds are particularly attractive when drying time can be reduced and the expensive drying line does not have to be extended." TESLA BATTERY DAY COULD INTRODUCE US TO THE WORLD OF DRY ELECTRODE MANUFACTURING. As per TEsmanian: "Currently, batteries use what's called a wet slurry technology to coat the electrode foils for a battery. What they do is they mix a super toxic solvent with some binder, with some carbon and with the active material. And then they run it through a drying line and those drying lines are hundreds of feet long and consume huge amounts of energy" In contrast, a binder, the carbon material, and the active material are mixed up in Maxwell's dry electrode technology, resulting in a dough or bubblegum-like substance which will run through a machine similar to an extruder. One of the benefits of using dry battery technology would be that it decreased the degradation of batteries.". and it could speed up the process by 16x. And from the UK Guardian "Patrick Hummel, an analyst at investment bank UBS, said he was expecting news of a battery containing so-called dry electrodes. These would be produced with a simplified manufacturing process that does not require energy-intensive drying before the electrodes are fitted in batteries. The rewards for developing that technology are potentially enormous for an electric carmarker, removing some of the obstacles to breaking the stranglehold of fossil fuels. Dry electrodes are expected to deliver gains in energy density of as much as 50%, and they could be cheaper to make too. They could also allow Musk to achieve his professed aim of eradicating ethically questionable cobalt from Tesla’s batteries" https://chargedevs.com/newswire/accelerated-electrode-drying-could-reduce-battery-production-cost/ https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-million-mile-battery-maxwell-dry-battery-electrode-technology https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/sep/20/sober-investors-hope-to-get-a-buzz-from-teslas-battery-day CHARGEPOINT REPORTEDLY CLOSER TO GOING PUBLIC "ChargePoint Inc., one of the world's oldest and largest electric vehicle charging networks, is nearing a deal to go public through a reverse merger with Switchback Energy Acquisition Corp, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. The deal for ChargePoint could value the company at more than $2 billion (1.54 billion pounds) and be announced as early as next week, the sources said, cautioning that talks could still collapse and terms may still change." says Autoblog: "Switchback Energy is a special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC) which raised $300 million in an initial public offering in July 2019. A SPAC is a shell company that uses IPO proceeds, together with debt, to acquire another company, typically within two years. Investors are not notified in advance what the SPAC will buy. Nikola went public earlier this year through a SPAC merger while electric carmaker Fisker has agreed to a reverse merger with Spartan Energy Acquisition Corp." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/09/19/chargepoint-ev-charging-company-nearing-ipo/ GOLF GTE REVIEWED "Packing a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines the 112-horsepower electric motor with a 147 HP 1.4-liter turbocharged petrol engine, it does the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in 6.7 seconds and has a 140 mph (225 km/h) top speed." reports CarScoops: "Compared to its predecessor, the new Golf GTE has a 50% bigger battery. The 13 kWh unit takes five hours to charge at 2.3 kW and 3 hours and 40 minutes at 3.6 kW, and gives the car a zero-emission range of around 37 miles (60 km) with a maximum speed of 81 mph (130 km/h). So, can the new generation Golf GTE be considered the electrified version of the 2020 Golf GTI Mk8? MARK GARNETT (PRODUCER) STE BIRKETT (PRODUCER) – FOUND ME RECENTLY MARTY YOUNG (PRODUCER) BRUCE HARRISON R W SAVAGE CLARIFICATION ON THE HARLEY DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE From Sabrina Giacomini at RideApart.com: "However, in recent years, innovation hasn’t been part of the brand’s lingo—its almost as though it’s been sitting on its legacy and relying on that and only that to sell bikes. The LiveWire had the potential to change that and open new doors. While it hasn’t completely failed, I don't believe it has succeeded either. The way I see it, there are 2 reasons for that and here's my two cent about it." So what are those two reasons? And is one of them the range which I told you was my main let down. "Today, people have access to more electric models options than ever and while 110 miles is a decent range for an electric bike, it might not be enough for the LiveWire to stand out of the stylish, efficient, and affordable electric motorcycle crowd. Because now we all know: an electric orange comes at a price. The company announced on Monday that the LiveWire was on track to hit the showrooms this year and that the price tag would be set at $29,799. With young adults dealing with more debt than ever, $30k will be better spent on purchasing a car (or groceries) than a bike." "The company did have the opportunity to bring Alta Motors on board, a well-established competitor in the field of electric bikes that likely would have propelled H-D forward in its electric ambitions. Would a partnership have resulted in a cheaper LiveWire? Maybe not, but Alta's contribution to the project could have meant a sweeter deal for the money." So i got it wrong with 59 miles, I don't think i was looking at the correct number. The Harley website says: "The high-voltage battery, or RESS, provides an estimated 110 miles of range, measured using the MIC mixed-use cycle. Riding range estimates based on current SAE testing of LiveWire concept motorcycle. Actual riding range will vary based on several factors including weather and driving conditions." https://www.rideapart.com/articles/300795/weekend-wtf-harley-davidson-livewire/ https://www.harley-davidson.com/gb/en/motorcycles/future-vehicles/livewire.html LYNK & CO'S HATCHBACK DROPS MAJOR CAMO IN NEW SPY PICS "Lynk & Co is progressing with the development of its fourth model which will take the shape of a compact hatchback. This fresh batch of spy photos reveals the company is in the advanced stages of testing as its prototype is featuring less and less camouflage." reports Anthony for Motor1.com: "According to unconfirmed information, the model will be based on the architecture that will also underpin Volvo’s upcoming revamped 40 series of compact cars. The Swedish hatch and small wagon are rumored to go fully electric, but that won’t be the case with Lynk & Co’s sibling. It may seem like a conventional ICE-powered vehicle but underneath the skin should be a compact plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor. This system should be good for a purely electric range of about 50 miles (80 kilometers)" https://www.motor1.com/news/300930/lynk-co-hatchback-spied/ JAGUAR AFFIRMS FORMULA E COMMITMENT DESPITE IMPENDING CUTS "Jaguar Land Rover revealed last week that it will cut 4,500 jobs from its global operations, with the majority of them hitting management roles in the UK and the company set to start a voluntary redundancy programme." says Alex Kalinauckas for Motor1.com: "But [James] Barclay, the FE squad’s team principal, stated that Jaguar would carry on racing for the “longer-term” as it fits with the manufacturer’s recent drive towards electrification on its road car models. "It’s an unprecedented time for the car industry,” he told Motorsport.com: “A lot of geopolitical factors are affecting the industry at the moment – a slowdown in China, slowdown in diesel sales and we have that small matter of Brexit in the UK, which is affecting consumer confidence. So, we have to take some key decisions now to protect the long-term future of our company. [It’s] really important we make those steps now. But at the same time, we also announced that we’ll be building electric drive units at our engine manufacturing plant in Wolverhampton and also building a battery plant in Birmingham." https://www.motorsport.com/formula-e/news/jaguar-fe-commitment-job-cuts/4323781/ GAC MOTOR UNVEILS CONCEPT CAR ENTRANZE GAC Motor officially announced that it has registered its North American Sales Company in Irvine, Calif., near Los Angeles. The regional headquarters will be responsible for branding, marketing, product planning and financial affairs. GAC Motor also announced at the press conference that the GAC R&D Center Detroit has officially begun operation. Located in Farmington Hills, Mich., the new R&D center was built with an investment of US$ 4.4 million and encompasses nearly 50,000 square feet of real estate. And as for their new electric concept, it's the ENTRANZE. "The Slick Bullet shaped exterior is completely breathtaking in the real flesh and introduces brand new proportions. New 3+2+2 seating arrangement and ‘aircraft inspired aisle’. Two-side mounted displays for functional feature control, plus curved displays for passenger entertainment. With most of the car made of environmentally sustainable materials, the interior of ENTRANZE is more influenced by home decoration than cars and is a great contrast to the technology and the stark exterior." https://insideevs.com/gac-entranze-naias-photos-videos/ RENAULT EXPANDS ZOE FLEET IN ZITY CAR SHARING IN SPAIN "The new electric car sharing service Zity in Madrid, Spain turns out to be very popular as 157,000 people used it in the first year." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "The fleet of 500 Renault ZOE Z.E. 40 is soon to be expanded by another 150 ZOE to 650 total by the end of January. We don’t know the number of trips, but as many customers were using Zity more than once, it’s maybe on the track to profitability." https://insideevs.com/renault-zoe-fleet-zity-car-sharing-in-spain/ WHY THE MCLAREN P1 IS A LIVING LEGEND "The 903bhp McLaren P1 is now six years old but remains an awe-inspiring machine. Motorious hosted the McLaren halo car at Autosport International 2019" says AutoClassics.com. Although it's not a Plug In car, it was a very early hybrid supercar. Using the Formula-1 inspired hybrid technology for performance, it was the first of a new breed. These days no supercar would be complete without a big battery so help out the wheezing old fossil engine. And since then we've had fully electric supercars from the likes of the Rimac Concept One, and the Rimac C_Two. https://www.autoclassics.com/posts/reviews/mclaren-p1-motorious BRAKE PAD REPLACEMENT ON EVS "The day after Christmas, Tesla CEO Elon Musk gave us an unexpected gift. Brake pads on Teslas would “literally never” need to be replaced, he said, thanks in part to the electric car’s regenerative brakes cutting way down on brake pad use compared to a conventional car. That seemed a little too good to be true! But maybe not impossible, exactly" said Erik Shilling of Jalopnik. But then he asked, would an EV maker really say you never need to replace them? He asked Jaguar who said: "The brake pads on the I-PACE do indeed need to be replaced periodically. As you might imagine, the rate at which this is required varies widely owner to owner, based on his/her individual driving style. The battery must be below approximately 80% state of charge in order to receive the full benefit of the resistance of the electric motors. The idea here is that we can’t overcharge the battery and force additional electrons in, if it’s already full, so the resistance provided by the motors gradually does decrease the fuller the battery is requiring the use of the standard braking system." And Erik asked GM: "The regenerative braking feature of the Bolt EV allows the vehicle to decelerate with less use of the vehicle’s base hydraulic brake system. However, the actual mileage that the brake lining’s life could be extended varies due to the parameters under which the vehicle is driven." Tesla didn’t reply to his request for comment but hey if Elon has tweeted, don't correct the boss. Leave it. https://jalopnik.com/the-truth-about-brake-pad-replacement-in-teslas-and-oth-1831591519 DIESEL POPULARITY ON AUTO TRADER FALLS 40% IN TWO YEARS "Searches for diesel cars on Auto Trader have plummeted 40% over the past two years. The online classified marketplace said the proportion of fuel related searches attributed to diesel on Auto Trader has dropped from a high of 71% in November 2016, to a record low of 47% last month." in a new MotorTrader.com article: "Annually, between 2017 and 2018, there was a 40% increase in consumers searching for AFVs, with electric alone recording a spike of 52%. In just two years, searches for AFVs and pure electric have increased a significant 130% and 179% respectively." https://www.motortrader.com/motor-trader-news/automotive-news/diesel-popularity-auto-trader-falls-40-two-years-15-01-2019 HACK YOUR WAY INTO A NEW TESLA MODEL 3 "Tesla has been working closely with white hat hackers for years in order to make its vehicle software safer and now it’s taking an unprecedented step: it’s going to be giving away a Model 3 to a hacker who can crack the vehicle." reports Fred Lambert at Electrek: "Over the past 4 years, Tesla has been running a bug bounty program and according to sources familiar with the effort, the company has given away hundreds of thousands in rewards to hackers who exposed vulnerabilities in its systems. The automaker increased its max payout per reported bug to $15,000 last year and it also took a great step in reassuring owners who are hacking their own vehicles. Tesla said that it will not void its warranty when a vehicle is hacked for “pre-approved good faith security research:” But now the top prize being offered is even more valuable, a free car to the winner of a hacking contest. https://electrek.co/2019/01/14/tesla-model-3-giveaway-hacker/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 27th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. Follow Up 1: the Twitter account of John Totah who leaked the Gigafactory production numbers now seems to be completely deleted. Follow Up 2: Audi is scrapping its plans to launch its E-Tron Quattro crossover in Brussels on Aug. 30. The launch has been postponed to a future date. $2B INVESTMENT BOOST FOR FARADAY FUTURE TechCrunch call them the "Beleaguered electric vehicle firm Faraday Future" and "a rare moment of cheer for floundering electric car maker" which is a little harsh. But some might say fair! We've been talking about Faraday since they were founded in 2014 but so far have only released beta prototypes, that being the FF91. The car which they said would be on the market this year. Even when we first saw it at CES at the start of 2017 that date seemed a flight of fancy. And although they're based in California it's definitely Chinese money propping them up. Perhaps the 13 models they once promised are a little bit optimistic at this stage. TechCrunch do say: "Evergrande Health, a division of Hong Kong-listed Evergrande, has taken a 45 percent stake in Faraday Future in a deal worth a total of $2 billion. Evergrande Health has taken over an investment commitment agreed to last November by Season Smart Limited [which] invested an initial tranche of $800 million, according to filings, but now Evergrande Health has taken that over for around $860 million" FF said in a statement: "“FF will continue to use the committed funds to accomplish our top priority — finalizing the development and delivering the first production vehicle, FF 91 to both US and China markets. The investment will also support Faraday Future to expand its product pipeline, develop cutting-edge technologies and grow the business rapidly in the global marketplace, including our manufacturing facilities in Hanford, California and in Guangzhou Nansha, Guangdong Province, China." Electrek reminds us of the specs: "With a 130kWh battery pack configuration, FF claims that the FF91 will have 1050 horsepower. Faraday Future says this is the most of any electric car (but actually falls short of some hypercars like the current Rimac Concept_One and now some other upcoming electric cars) and has 378 miles of EPA range." According to GearBrain: "It is unknown how far the FF91 is from mass production, as Faraday Future scrapped plans for a $1 billion Las Vegas factory last August, instead opting to take over a 55-year-old former Pirelli tire factory in Los Angeles. FF said on June 7 this year that it had only just received a permit to begin construction of its new production facility. Despite the significant setbacks, lawsuits over missed payments to contractors, and an employee exodus, $2 billion is a huge chunk of cash and should see the FF91 make it to the end of a production line. " TESLA ROADSTER DRIVER SAYS IT’S FAST, REAL FAST Emile Bouret is the test driver you go to for performance testing. He's raced professionally, has worked for Audi in the past, and now is a test driver for Tesla thanks to the chief designer Franz von Holzhausen bringing him in. Now we're still in the same week as a Tesla employee leaking positive news from Gigafactory, so he's not going to say much about the new Roadster. But he did say on the Youtube channel of VINWiki: "I know there is some scepticism about the figures that were quoted that day, 0 to 60 mph, quarter-mile, etc., and I think I can say without getting in trouble that those are actual figures. Those are not theoretical. Those are not calculations. We have done those numbers. I probably shouldn’t say but those numbers are actually conservative. It’s going to be a proper weapon." StatCheck on the Roadster - 200kWh battery pack, 600+ miles on one charge, three motors and 0-62 less than 2 seconds, these days everyone wants the 0-100mph time too, and that's 4.2 seconds. And that's without rocket boosters! HYUNDAI WILL USE 'SECOND-LIFE' ELECTRIC CAR BATTERIES FOR ENERGY STORAGE Hyundai is the latest automaker to explore uses for so-called "second-life" electric-car batteries for storage. Stephen Edelstein for The Drive makes a good point about renewables needing storage to really be the answer to current fossil fuels, which can be 'always on': "Hyundai has already constructed a one-megawatt-hour test array using Ioniq Electric and Kia Soul EV batteries. Going forward, it plans to provide batteries to Wärtsilä, which will then market them to electric utilities and other companies as part of complete energy-storage systems" he says: "Hyundai expects 29 gigawatt-hours of used electric-car batteries to be available by 2025, compared to the 10 GWh of batteries currently available for the energy-storage market. The prediction is based on an assumption of vastly expanded electric-car sales. Tesla has already pioneered the model of selling both electric cars and batteries for energy storage. BMW, Daimler, and Nissan have also discussed selling energy-storage battery packs, but not on the same scale as Tesla." http://www.thedrive.com/tech/21774/hyundai-will-use-second-life-electric-car-batteries-for-energy-storage DAIMLER TRUCKS ANTICIPATES BATTERY BREAKTHROUGH "Freightliner sells more heavy-duty diesel trucks in North America than any other brand. The division of Daimler AG, the German company that also owns the Mercedes-Benz car brand, controls about 40 percent of the heavy-duty truck market on this side of the Atlantic." reports Jerry Hirsch for trucks.com: "Earlier this month Roger Nielsen, chief executive of Daimler Trucks North America, unveiled the electric version of its flagship Freightliner semi-tractor. Prototypes of the truck will go into testing in the Portland, Ore., area later this year." Roger Niesel told Trucks.com: "When we make announcements, we’re always targeting what the customer could use, what the customer could need. Others in the startup industry [are] trying to attract investors or money, which is a different message if you’re trying to attract investment versus you’re trying to attract customers. We’re in the business of attracting customers, so our message is a little bit different. But for sure all the startups are interesting to watch. Of course, we’ve talked to them. Customers will get operating cost parity before purchase price parity. A lot of things go in that equation. The customer is expecting a truck to last a million miles with the last half million being driven by his used truck customer. There’s still a lot to be done there." On short hauls he says: "Bakery deliveries start at 4 in the morning, and they can go all the way through the evening. Maybe that truck also has to come back midday for a charge, or there’s charging somewhere along the way. The [Freightliner] eM2 [an electric medium-duty truck] would be a perfect application for a bakery with a 60-minute rest stop and charge. Say the driver wants lunch. He can get another 200 miles of range." Thursday 8th March 2018. Coming up today, more manufacturers stop selling diesels in favour of hybrids whilst one very large one commits to diesel. Plus more from today’s Geneva Motor Show like the Hyundai Kona which you and I will to on the show tomorrow. EV TYRE TECH The 2018 Geneva International Motor Show has been dominated by headlines of the best to electrified vehicles, but Goodyear didn't want to miss out. They used the show to debut their Efficient Grip Performance with Electric Drive Technology tyre which, apart from being a bit of a mouthful, is designed for the new breed of electric vehicles. According to Goodyear, regular old tyres you'd get on an ICE car can wear up to 30% faster when fitted to an electric vehicles because in EVs we have all the torques. Cars like the BMW i3 already come with custom tyres mainly because they thinner to have less rolling resistance. And it's not just the next generation of batteries which will give us longer range, it's the rubber too. And finally there's the noise issue. For anyone who has had gone into an ICE car after being in an EV you find yourself shouting because they're so loud, well the new Goodyear's are ultra quiet too to match the cars. The say the custom tread design prevents sound waves from entering the grooves, which in turn reduces cabin noise. Also in Geneva Goodyear showed the Oxygene concept tire. The concept has a unique structure that features living moss growing within the sidewall. This open structure and the tire’s smart tread design absorb and circulate moisture and water from the road surface, allowing photosynthesis to occur and therefore releasing oxygen into the air. OK then http://www.greencarcongress.com/2018/03/20180307-goodyear.html RIMAC C UNDERSCORE TWO The Rimac Concept One is a beast and, when it's not being set on fire by The Grand Tour, is one of the best examples of how to make an electric hypercar. Well now we've seen the Rimac C_Two at the Geneva Motor Show. They teased us with it last month but now, in the flesh, it takes your breath away. First, let's get speccy. The specs are: 4 electric motors, 1,914bhp, 0-60 in just 1.85 seconds and a top speed of 258 mph. And get this, the front two motors have one gear whilst the rear motors have two gears. What kind of witchcraft is this? The 0-184 mph stat, which is something I look for in every car I buy, is a rather lazy 11.8 seconds. Only 150 of them will be made which is disappointing because I'm sure we were all ready to sell the house, put the dog on eBay and the cat on Craigslist just to raise the cash. The battery is 120kWh, liquid cooled, which is good for 400miles unless you stamp on the electron pedal. They've also built it with Level 4 autonomous driving so, in theory, you could buy one of the greatest driving machines ever made and have it do all the fun bits. Although if you use self driving in places where it’s not legal, like here in the UK, the police will probably pull you over and send you to jail forever with nothing by memories of the time you drive a Rimac. https://www.autoblog.com/2018/03/06/rimac-c_two-electric-hypercar-almost-2-000-horsepower/ RENAULT ZOE GETS MORE MUSCLE Car Magazine in the posted some wonderful pics of the Geneva Motor Show which I urge you to check out. Along with supercars and luxury hybrids was the new and very purple Renault Zoe ZE40 R110. The R110 moniker is a reference to the 107bhp motor which is newly upgraded to 80kw and, whilst it doesn't provide much more of a gut punch when you pull away from the light, will dramatically improve the 50-70 time and motorway driving. Oh and it's purple. So very very purple. The press pics a while ago were nice but seeing it in the flesh, it's ALL the purple. The new Zoe will also come with Android Auto and third party apps can be used including Waze, Skype and Messenger. No word on whether the charging will be any faster. Months ago on InsideEVs i read an article about future Zoe's coming with CCS socket and ability to handle up to 150kW charging. With a 40kWh battery to top up, that would be nice, but I can't find anything either way. I'm guessing not. https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/renault/new-renault-zoe-2018-uk-price-specs-performance-interior/ OUTLANDER GETS A POLISH The Mitsubishi Outlander is the outrageously popular plug in hybrid which just keeps on selling in Europe. The updated version was shown at Geneva which is now cleaner, more efficient, smoother and with a more powerful motor. I don't know much about combustion engines, shock horror, but it moves from an Otto cycle to an Atkinson cycle petrol 2.4 litre unit. The important electric bits all get a bit of spit and polish with more power from the inverter, the motor, 15% battery capacity and a higher rate to discharge that power. Altogether a nice set of improvements. https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/mitsubishi/mitsubishi-outlander-phev-my2019-news-info-tech-spec-pictures-prices/ TOYOTA OFFER AURIS WITH TWO HYBRID OPTIONS So you may know I have a love/hate relationship with Toyota. They were early with electrification and have sold a bazillion cars with a battery in, but just recently they’ve decided to throw shade at plug in cars to advance their own market lead on soft hybrids. Come on Toyota let’s all move forward to together without you starting a fight against owners of plugins and pure electric vehicles. However I do love them for cars like the Auris which sell like hotcakes, and Geneva showed up the third generation which…fanfare please…won’t have a diesel option. Instead there will be two petrol-electric versions. I love you Toyota. However no chance of a third option of a pure electric. I hate you Toyota. Not really. https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/toyota/new-toyota-auris-uk-price-specs-sale-date-hybrid-engines-interior-mpg/ AUDI E-TRON MOVES FROM CONCEPT TO PROTOTYPE Audi were at Geneva with the e-tron. Not so much a concept but a protoype these days. How miffed do you think they are that the Jaguar I-PACE is taking orders whilst they're not ready yet? Journalists have been in one, although not driving one, which is what Jag were doing last December, which was three months away from launch. However all I can get from Audi is that the e-tron will start production before the end of this year. Same as the I-PACE it's compatible with rapid chargers up to 150kW. Same as the I-PACE real-world driving range of 300 miles is the claim. If only idiots like me would stop comparing it to the Jaguar which, did i mention, you can currently buy. https://www.carthrottle.com/post/the-audi-e-tron-laughs-in-the-face-of-range-anxiety/?utm_source=carthrottle-rssfeed&utm_medium=rss Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
