Tom McKeown lived and breathed basketball throughout junior and senior high school in Babylon. As an eighth grader in 1974-1975, he got to experience the thrill of watching the varsity team win their league and the Suffolk County championships. As fate would have it, this was also the first year that New York State allowed county champions to play each other, setting up a showdown between Babylon's Panthers and Nassau County's champs, the South Side Cyclones of Rockville Center. It was an epic season that engaged Tom so deeply that he has written his version of the story as This Is Panther Country. We don't want to spoil the outcome but the subtitle is A Memoir of Youth, Underdog Spirit, and Basketball Glory. Available March 18, 2025, the book chronicles life on the court, in the school hallways, and in the McKeown family home on Coppertree Lane. You'll learn a lot about the ins-and-outs of basketball tournaments but you'll also be pulled back to your own high school days of close friend groups, petty slights, unrequited crushes, and weekend parties.   Further Research This is Panther Country by Tom McKeown Babylon Jr/Sr High School Glenn Vickers (Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame) “The ABA was Short Lived, but Its Impact on Basketball is Eternal” (Smithsonian Mag) Audio Footnotes: Mickey Quinn and St. John the Baptist High School (episode 133)

Should the Globe still have run his story? by Tom Jones Last July, Cullen was reporting on Bluestein while she was meeting with the doctor who was going to help her end her life. The doctor explained that Vermont law required Bluestein to get signatures from two people who would say she was in a clear state of mind when she made her decision. Furthermore, the signatures could not be from family members, beneficiaries or anyone associated with the doctor's clinic. Final wave of Massachusetts is to legalize assisted suicide.  As it turns out Cullen didn't reveal he signed an affidavit indicating the person that wanted to commit suicide was of sound mind.  He inserted himself into a story he was writing.  He has attacked me on many occasions and he even used his column one time to attack me b/c I wrote a note to his editor. Toward a Pro-Life Future in the Empire State On this day, the Most Rev. John O. Barres, Bishop of Rockville Center, gave the Homily at the Shrine. This day was special as the New York State's Knights of Columbus, as well as councils across Long Island, attended Mass at the Shrine of Our Lady. The Homily may be segmented into three parts (with the approximate times listed below). The Gospel (0 – 1:15) precedes the first section of the Homily (1:24 – 2:55) and greets the Spanish speaking Knights of Columbus and Spanish attendees. How Our Lady of Fatima's Message is Relevant Today The second section (2:55 – 16:28) of the Homily (and the remainder of the Homily) is in English. The Homily discusses How Our Lady of Fatima's Message is relevant today as it was 105 years ago. Additionally, the Homily discusses the Mystery of the Cross, using St. Paul as an example for us all to bridge his own crosses, while helping others with their crosses. It is a model that we need to strive to emulate. Hear more in the audio. The third section (16:30- 24:11) of the Homily focuses on a Catholic writers' vision of What Jesus will ask us when we appear before Him on Judgement Day. Where are the Others? This is the question Jesus asks of us all. How did we help others reach salvation? We all have this challenge, and it can be met in many ways. The Homily focuses on some examples. Where are the Elderly and Un-born? This question of Where are the Others may be expanded. Where are the elderly? Where are the un-born? Part of facing the Lord, will be the question . . . what did we each do to protect the elderly and the un-born. The Bishop describes what is going on in New York State concerning the un-born and potential laws. He also urges all New Yorkers to read the statement published recently by the New York State Bishops (the document may be found on the Diocese of Rockville Center's website and the Queen of All Hearts website). Toward a Pro-Life Future in the Empire State. We encourage all members (regardless of where you live) to read the document and to understand the position and activities of the Church in NYS on this crucial manner. Our thanks to the Bishop, and to the New York State (and local) councils of the Knights of Columbus for attending today's special Mass.

In 2020 we marked the centennial of woman suffrage and the passing of the 19th amendment. Although the intervening 102 years can make that struggle feel like the distant past, the story of the many people who fought and marched and pushed for the right to vote is very much alive. Marguerite Kearns keeps one such story before our eyes in her book An Unfinished Revolution (SUNY Press). The book presents the life of her grandparents, Edna Buckman and Wilmer Kearns, and their extended world of Pennsylvania relatives, fellow Quakers, and suffrage activists. Living in Rockville Center in 1905, Edna and Wilmer were in the thick of grassroots organizing on Long Island and New York City. The stories that Marguerite heard from her mother and grandfather, along with her own extensive research, form a picture of loving, dedicated, real people making the best of their lives and making history. On today's episode, Marguerite shares how she learned that story and how she wove it into a book rich with photographs and the words of Edna and Wilmer. Feast of St. Agnes – One of the Greatest in Faith and Holy Martyrs! Feast of St. Agnes – The Patron Saint of the Diocese of Rockville Center, Long Island, NY. The Gospel reading today is about a great treasure found in a field. It is also the Feast of St. Agnes, also a great treasure. The Gospel talks about a great treasure that is hidden and that one must dig up. The treasure of the Gospel and the treasure of the Kingdom of God is why we must work the field. One of the ways we plow this field, where the treasure lays and is hidden, is by considering and contemplating the great things He has done in and through our patron saints. This Gospel also tells us about St. Agnes herself. This may be a surprise, or even confusing to the reader of the Gospel; because it does not tell us directly about martyrdom. Often times when Agnes is depicted, she is depicted as an adult. Spiritually, that is true. Historically, however, that is not true. See how Agnes surpasses many in faith by listening to her story. Understand how we all, regardless of what Diocese you live in, can spiritually be impacted by understanding why Agnes is so important. Listen to this Meditation Media for the week.

Hi everybody, and welcome to Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. And boy, do I have a heck of a show for you today. A few things to note before we get started:First, I was so excited to talk to today's guests that I literally forgot to plug in my microphone before I hit record. Yes, really. As a result, the computer mic picked up my voice, and it doesn't sound as clear as usual. I couldn't believe it once I noticed, but after about two minutes of listening back to the recording, I barely noticed. I hope that you have the same experience. Sorry about that.Second, today's episode features a lot--and I mean a lot--of references and name-checks of locations around Long Island. There are two guests today, and all three of us are from the area. Plus, the focus of today's episode is a store that was on Long Island, along with a show from the Nassau Coliseum. So if you grew up on or near Long Island--especially in the 80s or 90s, today's conversation will stir up tons of memories, and put a smile on your face. If you're not from Long Island, you can either break out a map or you can just nod along as the references come out fast and hard. All that said, today's episode completes a full circle for me, and answered questions that I've been wondering about for decades. This podcast is a passion project of mine, and speaking to today's guests is something I've wanted to do for a long time. As personal as it is, I suspect that it will be meaningful to fans who had a similar upbringing to mine, and especially fans from the northeast, or at least the tri-state area.Today's guests are Don Kantor and Cara Polizzi, the owner and manager, respectively, of Prime Cuts, a no-longer-operational head shop that was primarily located in Rockville Center and then Bellmore, Long Island. You'll hear me say this in just a few minutes, but soon after I discovered Phish, I discovered Phish tapes. For a young teenager who didn't have full time access to the internet and not knowing other fans made it pretty difficult to access any unofficial Phish recordings. Through a friend's sister, I discovered Prime Cuts. And Prime Cuts is where I discovered the world of Phish tapes, as well as tapes from many many other bands.Prime Cuts was more than a store. It was a discovery, it was a connection to a wider world, it was a community center, and it was an oasis for those who were into the scene and didn't know how to find like minded fans. In today's conversation with Don and Cara, we all go deep into the origins of the store, the nuts and bolts of how the taping process worked and answer the long-debated question of whether or not Prime Cuts' taping allowance was sanctioned by Phish. For the Attendance Bias segment of the episode, Don chose to discuss the 2nd set of April 3, 1998 at the Nassau Coliseum, and Cara chose to talk about Fluffhead and You Enjoy Myself from Phish's 3.0 comeback show on March 6, 2009 at the Hampton Colisum. Both picks are epic highlights of the band's career and I was also thrilled at how much crossover there was with other Attendance Bias stories from past guests. Well, enough from me. I hope you can feel the love and joy in this conversation with Don and Cara of Prime Cuts.

He also is an accomplished pianist and a connoisseur of Bernard Lonergan's theological writings. It was no real surprise that Monsignor Alesandro was honored by the CLSA in 1986 as the Role of Law Award recipient. He continues to inspire and encourage young canonists in the United States and throughout the world today.
