Ross Rebagliati is a former professional Canadian snowboarder who won a gold medal in the men's giant slalom event at the 1998 Winter Olympics. The International Olympic Committee initially stripped him of the medal due to a failed drug test for the presence of cannabis, but that was overruled by an appeals court two days later, resulting in the medal being restored. Since retiring from snowboarding, Rebagliati has become an entrepreneur in the cannabis industry, and he joins Vivian to tell you all about it.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Cannabis attitudes have changed since Ross Rebagliati's Olympic mishap in 1998, but pro sports remain stuck in the past.
Season 1, Episode 3Can Weed and Pro Sports Coexist? The 2022 Winter Olympics are about to start in Beijing, and there has been a lot of attention paid to these games already, from the strict COVID-19 protocols that will be in place to concerns over China's human rights record. But there's one issue that comes up at nearly every Olympic Games: drug testing. In a few memorable cases, athletes have been penalized after testing positive for cannabis—a drug that normally isn't considered performance enhancing. Attitudes toward cannabis have changed dramatically over the past couple of decades, but less so for professional athletes. It's been twenty-four years since Canadian snowboarder Ross Rebagliati won gold at the 1998 Winter Olympics, in Nagano, Japan, only to be temporarily stripped of his medal hours later, after testing positive for marijuana. Now that cannabis is legal in several parts of the world, can weed and sports finally coexist? This week, we hear from Alex Cyr, who recently wrote about the relationship between professional sports and weed. He's a freelance writer whose work has appeared in the Globe and Mail and Toronto Life. Sheena Rossiter speaks with Cyr about his story on how the world of sport is reconciling its relationship with cannabis. In this episode:We hear about why Cyr decided to write about professional sports and its relationship with weed.We hear about the case of American 100-metre sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson. Then we hear about the case of Ross Rebagliati and Cyr's interview with the former Olympian. After that, we hear about what Cyr is watching right now. Finally, we check in on five things we're talking about this week at The Walrus.Links:Athletes Are Getting Burned by Weed Rules. In this Winter Olympics Special episode, James and Rowan discuss all things winter sports, and James tells us about his experience watching events and hobnobbing with athletes at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. We are super stoked to also be joined for a full feature interview with the first ever Olympic Gold Medalist in Men's Snowboarding - Canadian Champion Ross Rebagliati! Ross regales us with tales of riding on the world tour, as well as winning (and losing?) his gold medal at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympic Games.
How did gold medalist Ross Rebagliati find himself inside a Japanese prison? At the 1998 Nagano Games, one snowboarder's failed drug test leads to important questions about how much - or how little - has changed when it comes to the Olympics and weed. Hosted by Molly Bloom. Produced by FilmNation Entertainment in association with Gilded Audio.
The PACE Radio Show Tonight Kim Cooper & Al Graham sit down with Canadian Olympic Gold Medalist Ross RebagliatiRoss won the Gold medal in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano Japan during his epic run on the snowboard course. Then the Olympic committee confiscated that medal after Ross tested positive for cannabis. The medal was later reinstated, due to cannabis not being listed on the banned substances list as “performance enhancing”. Even though the medal was returned, the stigma perpetuated caused him to lose sponsorships and focus was now on cannabis, instead of his sport. This ultimately forced him out of the competitive sports world. He has been quoted as saying “I wasn't recognized for what I had accomplished but for something illegal” The ordeal left Ross shaken, but not dissuaded. He wanted his experience and publicity behind it all to mean something. So instead of shying away, he stood up. He wanted to give meaning to what he had gone through and became a spokesperson for the benefits of cannabis, turning adversity into entrepreneurial success. Ross' Gold was born, and it began with a line of glass paraphernalia, creating the first bong made with real gold. Since then, they have expanded into creating a line of cannabis consumption products, in keeping with the medalists Gold, Silver & Bronze Olympic theme. https://www.ross-gold.com/We will catch up with this historic Olympian and discuss his win, his line, his drive & his future goals in cannabis, all LIVE tonightTune In every Wednesday night at 8pm ET / 5pm PST to catch our LIVE show, only on the PACE Radio Network found at http://paceradio.net/Thanks for tuning in from all your hosts at The P.A.C.E. Ross Rebagliati won the first ever Olympic gold medal in snowboarding, only to have it stripped away when officials reported he'd tested positive for marijuana on a post-race drug test. Ross soon found himself in a Japanese police station, under heavy interrogation for hours and potentially facing a long prison sentence simply for having a few nanograms of THC metabolite in his urine. He tells Abdullah and Bean his entire epic Olympic story, from being fifteen and one of the first serious ski racers to switch to snowboarding, to smoking weed on the chairlift while training for World Cup events, to everything he went through at the 1998 Olympics and its aftermath, and his new career as the founder of Ross's Gold, a Canadian cannabis company. He also offers words of comfort and encouragement to sprinting sensation Sha'Carri Richardson, who was disqualified from this year's Tokyo games after testing positive for THC. Quindi scrivimi! Ross Rebagliati was the first-ever gold medalist in Olympic snowboarding. He was also the first Olympian to have his medal taken away and given back. Instead of being a blessing, the Olympic Medal ended up being a curse for Ross. On the podcast, we talk about how the biggest triumph of his life turned into a series of wrong turns--for a guy who should be a household name. Listen To This Ep148 - Gold Medal Olympian Ross Rebagliati - NDE Heli - Skiing In Alaska (11 03 '20) by Todd Hancock
This week we feature Ross Rebagliati, the FIRST Gold Medalist in Olympic Snowboarding history. Not only was he the first to win gold in the emerging new sport back in 1998 in Nagano, Japan, he was also the first to lose his medal, then get it back again. For past 22 years, Rebagliati tried to distance himself from the bizarre sequence of events—and the 17.8 nanograms of marijuana that triggered a series of serious and complicated events. We discuss the aftermath and how it nearly ended him. Twenty two years later, he realizes he will always be known as "the pot-smoking snowboarder dude who nearly lost Olympic Gold," but he's come to terms with it. It's an odd legacy, but at least he isn't afraid of it anymore. That was just the beginning of an Olympic drama like none other. We discuss the sport, how the drama of his temporary loss of his gold medal affected him, what the aftermath was like and where he is today. It's a very insightful interview into the life of an athlete in an emerging new sport and how it can go so wrong in the blink of an eye. Rebagliati began competing as a downhill skier, but took an interest in snowboarding and at age 16, taught himself to snowboard. He turned professional in the 1991–92 season, winning the Canadian Amateur Snowboard Championship in 1991 and the US Open and European Championships in 1994. He won the world giant slalom title at Sestriere, Italy, in 1996. In both 1996 and 1997 won the world super-giant slalom title at Whistler, Canada. His crowning achievement was his Olympic gold medal at Nagano in 1998 in the first-ever snowboarding event held at a Winter Games. Because of his fearlessness and prior experience, he was able to overcome the fierce weather that came in during the first and second runs of the event. However, three days later the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that Rebagliati had tested positive for marijuana and stripped him of his medal. Rebagliati adamantly insisted that he had not used marijuana since 1997 and had most likely been exposed to it secondhand during a party held for him by his friends prior to his departure for Nagano. The Canadian Olympic Association appealed the decision and five days later he won back the gold medal, as he was reinstated by the Court of Arbitration in Sport. Marijuana was a banned substance on the FIS (International Ski Federation) list, but not a banned substance on the IOC list. Critics of snowboarding felt that such antics were to be expected from athletes in this new sport with its young following and chastised the IOC for allowing the event into the Games. Others, however, chose to praise Rebagliati for his calmness under pressure and his unrelenting loyalty to his friends. After winning the gold, Ross was found to have Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in his circulatory system following a blood test and he was automatically disqualified. This decision was eventually overturned, largely on the basis that marijuana was not on the list of banned substances, and Rebagliati was given back the medal. Marijuana: The Performance Enhancer with Ross Rebagliati. Ross is a Canadian professional snowboarder, Olympic Gold Medal Winner and founder of Legacy Brands, a CBD consumables company and Ross' Gold, a medical cannabis merchandise company. Ross Rebagliati is a firm believer that Marijuana is a performance enhancer, and that usage can be helpful for some activities such as extreme sports, as it improves muscle relaxation, reduces anxiety, and extincts fear memories (e.g., negative experiences) leading to enhanced performance. It also improves sleep time and recovery, which may favour performance when an athlete is facing multiple competitions in a short period of time. Ross believes that Cannabis has many benefits of which CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the biggest. CBD has very powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Reducing inflammation helps to better manage the aches and pains an athlete's body chronically endures. It also has a calming effect reducing stress and anxiety which are two more realities of being an athlete. In January 2013, Rebagliati and his business partner, Patrick Smyth, launched Ross' Gold, a medical marijuana business. Ross' Gold's primary focus remains on establishing a brand in Canada and gaining a foothold in the industry under the federal government's new regulations. Under the new Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations, cannabis would be treated as any other narcotic used for medical purposes, enabling patients to acquire products as needed based on a health-care practitioner's prescription.
