pWotD Episode 2869: Justin Trudeau Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 251,499 views on Monday, 10 March 2025 our article of the day is Justin Trudeau.Justin Pierre James Trudeau (born December 25, 1971) is a Canadian politician who is the 23rd prime minister of Canada, having served since 2015. He was the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada from 2013 to 2025 and has served as the member of Parliament (MP) for Papineau since 2008.Trudeau was born in Ottawa, Ontario, as the eldest son of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, and attended Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from McGill University and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of British Columbia. After graduating, he taught at the secondary school level in Vancouver, before returning to Montreal in 2002 to further his studies. He was chair for the youth charity Katimavik and director of the not-for-profit Canadian Avalanche Association. In 2006, he was appointed as chair of the Liberal Party's Task Force on Youth Renewal. In the 2008 federal election, he was elected to represent the riding of Papineau in the House of Commons. He was the Liberal Party's Official Opposition critic for youth and multiculturalism in 2009; in 2010, he became critic for citizenship and immigration. In 2011, he was appointed as a critic for secondary education and sport. In 2013, Trudeau was elected as the leader of the Liberal Party and led the party to a majority government in the 2015 federal election. He became the second-youngest prime minister in Canadian history and the first to be the child of a previous prime minister.Major government initiatives Trudeau undertook during his first term included establishing the Canada Child Benefit, legalizing medical assistance in dying, legalizing recreational marijuana through the Cannabis Act, attempting Senate appointment reform by establishing the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments, and establishing the federal carbon tax. In foreign policy, Trudeau's government negotiated trade deals such as the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, and signed the Paris Agreement on climate change. He was sanctioned by Canada's ethics commissioner for violating conflict of interest law regarding the Aga Khan affair, and again with the SNC-Lavalin affair.Trudeau's Liberal Party was reduced to a minority government in the 2019 federal election. His government responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, announced an "assault-style" weapons ban in response to the 2020 Nova Scotia attacks, and launched a national $10-a-day childcare program. He was investigated for a third time by the ethics commissioner for his part in the WE Charity scandal, but was cleared of wrongdoing. In the 2021 federal election, he led the Liberals to another minority government. In 2022, he invoked the Emergencies Act in response to the Freedom Convoy protests and responded to the Russian invasion of Ukraine by imposing sanctions on Russia and authorizing military aid to Ukraine. His party signed a confidence and supply agreement with the New Democratic Party (NDP) in early 2022, which resulted in the enactment of the Canadian Dental Care Plan for residents that meet a certain income threshold and a framework for national pharmacare; in late 2024, the NDP opted to terminate the agreement. In early 2025, in response to the second Trump tariffs, Trudeau announced 25% retaliatory tariffs on $30 billion worth of U. S. goods.Following the sudden resignation of deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland in December 2024 and an ensuing political crisis, Trudeau announced on January 6, 2025, that he would resign as both the prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party. He advised the governor general to prorogue parliament until March 24, while the party held a leadership contest; Trudeau remained leader until Mark Carney was chosen, after which Trudeau will resign as prime minister. He will also retire as an MP when the 44th Canadian Parliament is dissolved. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:30 UTC on Tuesday, 11 March 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Justin Trudeau on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Gregory.

The Canadian Medical Cannabis Program has been available for more than two decades, yet the process of obtaining cannabis as medicine remains very cumbersome. In comparison, Recreational Cannabis, seen as a substance of misuse, is easy to acquire. When people express an interest in trying cannabis as a medicine to their health care team, many health practitioners simply direct their patients toward the Rec market knowing (or maybe not) the restrictions the Cannabis Act places on budtenders. Budtenders cannot discuss health conditions with customers. While many health professionals continue to ignore the highly regulated medicinal cannabis system, a group of entrepreneurs calling themselves Cannabis Coaches, are filling the need. In this episode we learn how certified Cannabis Coach Terese Bowors started a small business educating people about medicinal cannabis. We come to understand how a group of non-regulated health educators are developing their own Standards of Practice.Terese Bowors - Cannabis Wellness Coach - WebsiteTerese Bowors- LinkedIn(Yes we got a SOCAN membership to use this song all legal and proper like)Music by:Falling Through by Prophet - SpotifyAdditional Music:Desiree Dorion desireedorion.comMarc Clement - FacebookTranscripts, papers and so much more at: reefermed.ca

Many prescribers and provincial health systems still refuse to help patients safely access medicinal cannabis despite legalization. This is just not good health care according to Dr. Lynda Balneaves. Ted Smith is a big Boy Scout. He is constantly helping others in need, and Ted has successfully advocated human rights for decades.  Ted is the Founder of the the Victoria Cannabis Buyers Club, Canada's oldest compassion club, which opened in 1996.  He has played a large role in the battle to legalize cannabis in Canada for the past three decades and continues his advocacy work today .  Since moving to Victoria in 1995 to start the International Hempology 101 Society, Ted has been at the forefront of cannabis activism. He is the author of Hempology 101: The History and Uses of Cannabis Sativa, published in 2012, a history of cannabis text book full of rich references to our historic use of this important plant medicine. He was the publisher of the Cannabis Digest newspaper, Canada's largest publication on the subject for almost 10 years. Ted was even featured in a cameo as himself in the movie Kid Cannabis.  Ted has organized cannabis conventions across the country, coordinating or participating in approximately 4,000 rallies, meetings, press conferences and other events.Ted founded the Victoria Cannabis Buyers Club in January of 1996 making it the oldest medical cannabis dispensary in Canada, now with over 8,500 members.  After his employee Owen Smith was arrested baking cookies in 2009, he helped manage the case all the way to a unanimous 7-0 victory at the Supreme Court of Canada in 2015.  The R. v. Smith case made cannabis edibles and concentrates legal for patients to consume, whereas before only smoked herb was considered legal medicine.  Over the years, the VCBC and its facilities have been raided 8 times but have beaten every criminal charge in court using constitutional arguments. He took a few years away from the Victoria Cannabis Buyers Club to care for his life time partner Gayle Quin, who was also a patient and a passionate cannabis activist.   After she died of cancer in 2016, Ted created a tea company in her honour named Gayle's Tea, which is only available for sale at the VCBC.Currently Ted is focused on getting the VCBC a temporary exemption from the Cannabis Act to provide high-dosage edibles to patients, medicines the club has provided long before legalization.  After two raids by the Community Safety Unit, he and the club have been fined close to $6.5 millionThanks to Jeremy Benning, our co-producer and sound editor. And thanks to Albert Wong, who created and performed the music. For more insightful conversations related to cannabis law, listen to our other episodes at https://podcast.cannabislawonearth.com/ If you're looking for a good text book on Canada's federal cannabis law and regulations with helpful related case law, read Canada's Cannabis Act.And if you need a cannabis lawyer, ask Russell for more information at https://cannabislaw.ca

Owen is a cannabis subject-matter expert, possessing a wide range of cannabis industry knowledge based on two decades of working with patients, advocates, dispensaries, non-profits, producers and processors as well as one of the worlds largest cannabis corporations. In 2009, Owen was arrested for baking cannabis and making extracts, edibles and oils for members of the VCBC, and consequently raised a constitutional challenge that the Supreme Court of Canada decided 7-0 in his favour in 2015. Alison Myrden began her career as a Corrections Officer in 1988 after working with the Children's Aid Society. In addition to her website, you can find Alison at the following social media:  Twitter  -- LinkedIn -- Facebook -- During her career, Alison worked at troubled youth facilities around Southern Ontario and eventually solidified her niche with Young Offender cases in early 1989 at Community Resource Services. During her career, Alison was responsible for various duties including attending court, facility shifts and as court liaison for Cassatta Youth Custodial Facilities. One of her most challenging assignments included working with Psychiatric Young Offenders at a Secure Custody Facility. While working in the Youth Court Justice system, Alison noticed many Young Offenders were in trouble with the law for simple experimentation with illicit drugs. This seemed very wrong to her. Alison felt it would be better to educate these young people about drugs instead of punishing them. It seemed to her that our youth were being criminalized for no good reason. Around the same time, Alison was diagnosed with chronic progressive Multiple Sclerosis. She began experiencing Tic Doloureux (bilateral trigeminal neuralgia), an excruciating facial pain associated with MS. Soon after retiring in 1992, she was introduced to medicinal cannabis. She found immediate relief with cannabis without the harmful side effects of the other, more addictive medications. It was then that Alison became an activist for drug law reform. In 1995, Alison was prescribed cannabis for pain relief after her legal, doctor-supervised cocaine and heroin therapy, along with other prescription medications that proved to be insufficient. In 2000, Alison received a s.56 exemption from the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act to possess and grow cannabis for medical purposes, but was frustrated at not having her own high-quality, cost-effective supply. In 2004, Alison began working with Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP), which was renamed Law Enforcement Action Partnership, where she was the first female speaker in Canada to represent LEAP U.S. until 2016, when she branched out on her own. For over 35 years, in over 1,000 interviews, Alison described the "War on Drugs" as a "War on People", calling for its end.  While cannabis was legalized in Canada in 2018, Alison believes the government has not supported those people who need high quality doses of cannabis products at reasonable prices for medical purposes. In 2017, Alison became the first Authorized Pain Patient in the World for Medical Psilocybin for pain relief.  She applied to Health Canada in 2019 for an exemption from the CDSA to grow her own mushrooms with a daily dose of 50 g. Right now, the federal government is reviewing the laws that made recreational pot legal in Canada. Everything is theoretically on the table, even if the basics of the act are unlikely to change much. But there are things we could fix that would make the system work better—and more fairly—for everyone. From the pardon process to the makeup of the industry and who gets licenses and sits on boards, legal Cannabis has resembled the days of prohibition in one way—a lack of racial justice, and an inability to truly grant amnesty to everyone who should have it. This is our chance to fix that. Will we take it?GUEST: Akwasi Owusu-Bempah, associate professor of criminal justice, University of Toronto; co-author of Waiting to Inhale: Cannabis Legalization and the Fight for Racial Justice.

Canadians are changing their perspective of cannabis. People are using it as medicine and access has never been easier. Why is this bad? Why should anyone care how we access our medicinal cannabis? Canada is one of the few countries with federally legal cannabis. However, Canadians are not all benefiting from the creation of the Cannabis Act. There are barriers doing cannabis clinical research. Many prescribers and provincial health systems still refuse to help patients safely access medicinal cannabis despite legalization. This is just not good health care according to Dr. Lynda Balneaves. Her team set out to quantify patients' hurdles with the Medical Cannabis Access and Experiences in Canada Study. In this episode, Kirk and Trevor explore how medical cannabis is different from recreational cannabis and how the status quo of lumping them together is just not good for patient care.Lynda Balneaves - LinkedIn  Music by:Kid by The Revivalists - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9kEMY3cf5wAdditional Music:Desiree Doriondesireedorion.comMarc ClementTranscripts, papers and so much more at: reefermed.ca

In this episode we will be discussing how you can succeed in the evolving Canadian hemp market. The Canadian hemp market provides impressive opportunities within a highly regulated market. Unlike the United States, Canada places strict regulations on its industrial hemp and CBD industry, and under the Cannabis Act, CBD is treated largely the same as THC despite the fact that these cannabinoids have widely different properties.gvbbiopharma.com

Reverend Kelly Addison truly embodies what she does as the founder and Managing Director of Kelly's Green Lounge (KGL), a cannabis-friendly establishment quickly gaining notoriety within the cannabis community, and within its local community of Orono, ON. Kelly is warm, welcoming, supportive friend to many, and she is deeply in love with cannabis. She is kind to everyone, and a big part of her impact is in spreading the kindness and love that the cannabis plant would want for us within the cannabis community. Kelly brings a wealth of experience as an educator, counsellor, and builder of community to her work in founding KGL. She is a Certified Reiki Practitioner, and is studying plant medicines and other healing modes to add to her skill set. She has been practicing reiki on cannabis plants, saying “Goddess Bless” as she prays over them for a fruitful harvest. Motivated by the spiritual aspects of the plant, Kelly was ordained as a Minister in 2020, and holds “The Cannabis Church of KGL” as a celebration of unity, community, and respect for the cannabis plant and her divine properties. For her role in advancing cannabis and advocacy for the eventual inclusion of cannabis lounges under The Cannabis Act, Kelly has been recognized in several media publications on the international stage. She has appeared on media across Canada, The United States, and also on Australian T.V. show Obsessed With. Kelly's goal in life is not not only save the planet through cannabis and hemp, but also to marry Jason Mamoa.

Welcome back to Filipino Fridays! We're about to light it up with today's feature episode (if you know what I mean...) Our special guest is Abi Sampson, Professor of Cannabis Regulations at Centennial College. Abi takes us through her experience leading up to a thriving career in cannabis education and advocacy. She shares with us on the personal relationship between Filipinos and cannabis - how Filipinos are uniquely positioned to succeed in the cannabis industry. She takes us through how to have the "weed talk" with our families, providing data and insight on how we can help them understand the use of cannabis today. We discuss the history of Filipinos with the use of plant medicine and its connection to decolonial work. We also speak at length about how Filipinos and BIPOC folks have been targeted for the use of cannabis due to a history of cannabis criminalization rooted in racism. As published in the Globe and Mail, Abi teaches us "Cannabis 101" and gives advice on how to deal with navigating the sensitive conversation around cannabis. "Cannabis embodies the same tenets of community, compassion and care - that is the spirit of kapwa and of our Filipino culture (in the same way our people's ability to nurture communities)." "Filipinos are no strangers to revolutions - as people who are activists, fighters of resistance and our resiliency." (Quotes by Abi Sampson) ABOUT ABI SAMPSON Abi Sampson is a first generation Pinay-Canadian residing on the Native Lands of the Anishnabewaki, the Haudenosaunee, the Mississauga and the Wendake-Nionwentsïo people, colonially known as Colborne, ON. She began her cannabis career as a volunteer at NORML Canada, the longest running cannabis advocacy group in Canada, where she sat as the Ontario Regional Coordinator and eventually the Executive Director. Abi has provided expert delegations at the House of Commons before the Standing Committee on Health regarding Bill C-45/the Cannabis Act, at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario regarding exemptions to social cannabis consumption spaces under the Smoke Free Ontario Act and at Pickering City Council, where she presented as both a cannabis industry professional and a city resident. Abi is currently a Professor at Centennial College, teaching the Cannabis Regulations course through the Cannabis Cultivation and Processing Program. She is committed to cultivating a just and equitable cannabis industry, with a focus on cannabis patient advocacy, social justice issues and righting the harms of the War on Drugs, through education, community engagement and de-stigmatization.
