In the first Long Read, we get into "How we ended up with a Winter Games amid China's human rights crisis" By ESPN Senior Writer Sam Borden. The piece explores how China got the Winter Olympics when they have on average six days of snowfall per year, what they have learned from many other countries of their ilk getting major events despite shoddy human rights track records and the absurd demands the IOC had for the Oslo Olympic bidding.Thank you for listening! Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis fell awkwardly on his ankle the other night and is out for 4 weeks. Speaking of falling down, Kamila Valieva falls and doesn't medal in a controversial situation in the 2022 Winter Olympics. The latest details of Jim Harbaugh's coaching contract with the Michigan Wolverines are suspect at best. His leveraging tactics are certainly open for criticism and discussion. Our pal Michaela Schreiter rejoins Tall Can Audio to take a look at where we stand in Women's Hockey at the Olympics after the round robin portion of the competition. We'd love it if you'd take a second to leave a rating and a review there on your podcast app for the show. It only takes a moment and helps us out a great deal. We kick things off with a little craft beer chatter and get quick thoughts from Schreids on a busy day for Ottawa REDBLACKS as CFL Free Agency Opens. Talk quickly turns to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games and which sports we've had our eye on and some of the surprises around Team Canada. Finally we let Michaela loose on the Women's Hockey Tournament! What has we seen from Team Canada? What are the takeaways after that huge victory over Team USA? And was it really a good idea for that game against Russia under masks to go ahead? And, as usual, there's always one dough head who has to write the "Women's Hockey shouldn't be in the Olympics" article and this year has been no exception. We give thoughts on how out of date this debate actually is. Listen to Michaela Schreiter for all things CFL on the Mouchoir Podcast and catch her every weekend on TSN Radio with She's Got Game. The Winter Games are now underway in Beijing – in an anti-Covid bubble, for good reason. The opening ceremony has been impressive. Due to a diplomatic boycott, only Vladimir Putin is the main VIP visitor. This comes at a time when Russia's president is in the eye of another storm: the Ukraine conflict.
The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics have begun and today we are looking at the diplomatic boycotts surrounding the games. So far, countries such as Australia, Canada, Japan, Lithuania, the United Kingdom, and the United States, have announced a diplomatic boycott of the Games in response to the Chinese government's human rights abuses. However, do these types of boycotts have any impact? Should sports and politics mix? How will this impact the relationship between China and these countries after the games. These are some of the questions that are discussed in this episode of What Matters Today. Our guest for this episode is Professor Jussi Hanhimäki Professor Hanhimäki is Professor of International History and Politics and Chair of the Department of International History and Politics at the Graduate Institute. He has been a faculty member since 2000, Professor Hanhimäki was previously a Lecturer at the London School of Economics. From 2002 to 2003, he was a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars (Washington, DC) and is the recipient of the 2002 Bernath Prize from the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations. He was elected Finland Distinguished Professor in 2006. His main research interests include American foreign policy, transatlantic relations, and the international history of the Cold War.

Next February, the 2022 Winter Olympics are scheduled to be held in Beijing, the venue of the 2008 Summer Olympics. Preparation for the Games is well underway and China has said that it looks forward to welcoming the athletes; but due to the coronavirus pandemic, Beijing has banned foreign spectators, as did Japan when it hosted the 2020 Summer Olympics. As the 2022 Olympics near, several countries, including the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, and Lithuania, have announced a diplomatic boycott of the competition, and others may do so as well. So far, all countries will allow their athletes to compete. The diplomatic boycotts are a response to concerns about China's human rights practices, especially in Xinjiang, where at least one million Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities have been subject to involuntary detention in what China labels “reeducation camps.” Countries have very limited leverage over Chinese domestic human rights practices, and some argue that the Olympics provides a rare opportunity to voice the international community's concerns in a way that could shine a spotlight on China's human rights violations. In an August 2021 survey, just under half of Americans stated that they believe China's human rights record should prevent it from hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics, while 33 percent were uncertain. Please note that this podcast was recorded just prior to the Biden administration's announcement that it would not send officials to the Olympic Games. Bonnie Glaser talks with Susan Brownell about the upcoming Olympics and, more broadly, about the role of sports in China and what the Olympics means to the Chinese people and to the Chinese Communist Party. Dr. Susan Brownell is a professor of anthropology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She was a Fulbright Senior Researcher at Beijing Sport University and competed on the Chinese track and field team at the Chinese National College Games in 1986. She is also the author of Training the Body for China: Sports in the Moral Order of the People's Republic.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki confirms that the U.S. will not send a diplomatic or official delegation to the 2022 Winter Olympics in China and will support U.S. athletes from home. Other topics include COVID testing, Russia-Ukraine tensions.
The Biden administration will not send any diplomatic representatives to the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing as a statement against Chinese human rights abuses in Xinjiang, White House press secretary Jen Psaki announced Monday. Psaki said the administration was sending a "clear message" that the human rights abuses in China mean there cannot be "business as usual." "The Biden administration will not send any diplomatic or official representation to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics games given the PRC's ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang," Psaki said in the press briefing Monday. Psaki added that Team USA has the administration's "full support" but that the administration would not be "contributing to the fanfare of the game."To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy
