How do we confront difference and change in a rapidly shifting environment? Many indigenous peoples are facing this question in their daily lives. Sensing Others: Voicing Batek Ethical Lives at the Edge of a Malaysian Rain Forest (U Nebraska Press, 2024) explores the lives of Batek people in Peninsular Malaysia amid the strange and the new in the borderland between protected national park and oil palm plantation. As their ancestral forests disappear around them, Batek people nevertheless attempt to live well among the strange Others they now encounter: out-of-place animals and plants, traders, tourists, poachers, and forest guards. How Batek people voice their experiences of the good and the strange in relation to these Others challenges essentialized notions of cultural and species difference and the separateness of ethical worlds. Drawing on meticulous, long-term ethnographic research with Batek people, Alice Rudge argues that as people seek to make habitable a constantly changing landscape, what counts as Otherness is always under negotiation. Anthropology's traditional dictum to “make the strange familiar, and the familiar strange” creates a binary between the familiar and the Other, often encapsulating Indigenous lives as the archetypal Other to the “modern” worldview. Yet living well amid precarity involves constantly negotiating Otherness's ambivalences, as people, plants, animals, and places can all become familiar, strange, or both. Sensing Others reveals that when looking from the boundary, what counts as Otherness is impossible to pin down. Alice Rudge is a Lecturer in Anthropology at SOAS, University of London. She works at the intersection of environmental anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and science and technology studies. She focuses on themes of alterity, ethics, Indigenous justice, plantation agriculture, and sustainable scientific practice to explore conflicting questions of what it means to live a good life in conditions of environmental breakdown. Yadong Li is a PhD student in anthropology at Tulane University. His research interests lie at the intersection of economic anthropology, medical anthropology, hope studies, and the anthropology of borders and frontiers.

In this insightful novel, P. G. Wodehouse, as is his invariable custom, delves deep into the souls of his characters to lay bare many aspects of the human condition including the emotional, (“A snail crossed her path. She did not tread on it, for she had a kind heart, but she gave it a look. It was a look which, had it reached John, at whom it was really directed, would have scorched him”), the intellectual, (“Those just-as-good imitation heads never pay in the long run. What you ought to do is sell yours for what it'll fetch and get a new one. And next time,” said Chimp, “make it a prettier one.”) and the theological (“On that last awful day… do you know what'll ‘appen? The Lord God Almighty will say, angry-like, ‘Oo's responsible for all these corpses I see laying around ‘ere?' and E'll look at you sort of sharp , and you'll have to rise up and say ‘If I'd of done as Sergeant Major Flannery repeatedly told me…there wouldn't have been none of these poor murdered blokes.' “).This book introduces Hugo Carmody and Ronnie Fish, who later appeared in two Blandings Castle novels. Master criminals Dolly and Soapy Molloy and Chimp Twist make a return appearance in this story, after their debut in Sam In The Suburbs (Sam The Sudden in the UK). The action mainly takes place in and near the sleepy village of Rudge-in-the-Vale, with an interlude in London.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Foot and ankle injuries can be overwhelming for new sports medicine learners due to the complex network of bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints. Dividing the anatomy into the ankle joint, hindfoot, midfoot, and forefoot can be helpful. Learning the intricate anatomy is the first step in understanding what structures are located where, making it easier to narrow down the differential diagnosis. Foot and ankle injuries are common in the majority of sports, and learners need to become familiar with common and not to be missed pathologies. In this episode, Dr. Fahim Merali, sports medicine specialist at the Dovigi Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Clinic at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto discusses ankle and foot injuries seen frequently in various sports.Listen to learn how to provide an accurate on field assessment to determine appropriateness to return to the game, when to have a player sit out and undergo more urgent assessments, how to investigate and manage subacute and chronic foot and ankle injuries and appropriate rehab protocols for various foot and ankle conditions. As always, understanding the mechanism of injury is a key component and mastering the anatomy is the only way to know what structures are present in the region of pain, which leads to the differential diagnosis. Remember to always palpate and image the contralateral side for comparison. For learning anatomy, practice palpating structures on your own foot and ankle, use an anatomy colouring book and review resources such as radiopaedia or the Sports Medicine Review videos linked below.Additional resources:1. The eternal Free Bird, Ronnie Van Zant Ronnie Van Zant, In Concert Ronald Wayne Van Zant was born on January 15, 1948. His father Lacey, was a long haul trucker and his mother Marion, nicknamed “Sister”, was a part time doughnut shop employee and the fundamental caregiver of the family's six children. Even as a young person, Ronnie had ambitions to escape the lower middle class enclave he grew up in which was literally known as “Shantytown.” Lynyrd Skynyrd, 1973. But, limited to a 30 minute set, Lynyrd Skynyrd won the crowd over and even prompted demands for their own encore. Watching this performance, the Who entourage and their manager Peter Rudge were impressed. Nothing of this nature had ever happened before and Rudge, who managed both the Who and The Rolling Stones, took note. Hell House Kooper was immediately impressed by the band's preparation and focus, all business once they entered the recording studio. This came from years of rehearsals at the band practice space at a location dubbed “Hell House.” This shack, in the middle of nowhere on the outskirts of Jacksonville was an un-air conditioned, uninsulated dwelling that made for extremely unpleasant conditions, especially during the humid, 90 plus degree days of summer. The location, on a 90 acre plot of isolated property, was an alternative to suburban spaces that usually were subject to local resident complaints and police interruption. 12 hour days at Hell House made the relative luxury of a professional recording studio a welcome alternative.
