Send us a textJon sends Aemon, Gilly, Sam, and the wrong baby away from the Wall. He appoints Night's Watch brothers to rebuild and command castles along the Wall. Janos Slynt refuses and Jon levies a stiff punishment in response. Stannis approves. Simon and Mackelly admire Jon's transformation - from boy to man.Chapter Review:Jon has met with Maester Aemon, who provided the same advice he once gave to his brother Egg: Kill the boy so that the man may be born. Time to grow up. Jon puts this into practice when he meets with Gilly and explains what she must do to save Dalla's baby - give up her own. She agrees under considerable duress.Next, he meets with Sam who must go to Oldtown and become a maester. He will go and he'll earn his chain.Lastly, Jon commissions Bedwyck to refit and take command of the abandoned way-castle at Icemark. He'll command 30 men. Bedwyck's a seasoned ranger and Jon knows he'll prove more than capable. He gives Janos Slynt the same opportunity at Greyguard. Slynt refuses. Sam, triggered by this nickname, blurts his whole story to Alleras, who suggests that Sam forget the seneschal and the archmaesters. None of whom would believe him anyway, and instead tell the story to archmaester Marwyn.Sam agrees and by the light of a burning obsidian candle he repeats his tale. The Night's Watch visit Craster's Keep. Craster provides some information, but one of his pregnant daughter-wives recruits Jon to rescue her from her fate. Jon doesn't think they can help. Simon and Mackelly ponder Gilly's future. Chapter Review: The Night's Watch arrive at Craster's Keep. Lord Commander Jeor Mormont warns all not to interact with Craster's wives. The keep is awful, little more than a midden heap. Jon Snow joins Mormont in the “hall.” The squalid building stinks, and Craster sits in the only chair. Mormont quizzes Craster about Benjen Stark, but he's not been through these parts. The last crows Craster has seen were Waymar Royce and crew. Their host knows why the villages are empty. Mance Rayder has been inviting wildlings to join him. He has intel about the King Beyond the Wall and trades it for a new axe. Outside, Ghost terrorizes a young pregnant girl named Gilly. Jon calls him off. Jon then sets up a tent and makes his own food so that he owes Craster nothing. Later Gilly approaches Jon and ask him to take her when he leaves. If her baby proves to be a boy, Craster will give him to the Others. Jon feels bad, but he cannot help. As the Night's Watch leave for the Frostfangs following the map that Sam created with Craster's help, Jon asks Mormont about Craster's sons. The Great Ranging has found a fourth abandoned wildling village under a great weirwood tree. There is no sign of struggle or clue as to their motivations. Mormont sends word to Maester Aemon via one of Sam's ravens and the ranging continues north. Mackelly and Simon try to keep warm. Chapter Review: The wildling village is deserted. Only some charred human bones remain within the mouth of the weirwood tree that shades the entire village. Ser Jeor Mormont wonders why the wildlings burn their dead, but Jon Snow has a pretty good idea. This is the fourth abandoned village they've found. So Mormont pens a message for Maester Aemon. Jon delivers the message to Sam, who is supervising the ravens. He's trying to teach them to talk. Sam is warming to the ranging, as there don't appear to be any wildlings around. That which reassures Sam is troubling to everybody else. Jon and the Old Bear discuss what Benjen Stark would have done had he found the villages deserted, and they conclude that he would have continued on to try to solve the mystery. This gives Jon some hope. Their force will soon be swelled to 300 when they rendezvous with Qhorin Halfhand's men from the Shadow Tower. In the meantime, the trek north continues. Jon and a delegation from the Night's Watch find the bodies of Othor and Jafer Flowers near the Godswood. They bring them back to Castle Black for examination, but Othor's story is not quite done yet. Jon and Ghost save Lord Commander Mormont, which is a good job, because Jon had been very naughty. The boys discuss Jon's failings. Chapter Review: Jon, Sam, and the senior members of the Night's Watch find the bodies that Ghost discovered. They are rangers from Benjen Stark's party. Sam goes all CSI: They seem to have been dead a while, but they haven't rotted. Mormont is troubled and wants Maester Aemon to examine them, despite the misgivings of some of the men. When they return to Castle Black, a raven has brought news of Robert's death and Eddard Stark's treason. Ser Alliser mock's Jon as not only a bastard but the bastard-son of a traitor. Jon loses his temper and his liberty. But in the night, Ghost wakes Jon. Something is amiss. They trace the trouble to Mormont's quarters, where Othor is up and about - and up to no good. Jon and Ghost manage to defeat him with fire. Hopefully regaining the Lord Commander's good graces. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Eddard "Ned" Stark - Erstwhile hand of the King, Lord of Winterfell, and deceased King Robert's closest friend. Currently languishing in a King's Landing cell for treason. Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. Recently sworn brother of the Night's Watch. Samwell Tarly - Brother of the Night's Watch. Heavy-set and cowardly. Attendant to Maester Aemon. Friend to Jon Snow. Ser Jeor Mormont - Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Ser Alliser Thorne - Master of Arms for the Night's Watch. Mean-spirited instructor of the new recruits. Not a fan of Jon Snow. Maester Aemon - 100 year-old maester of the Night's Watch. Ghost - Jon Snow's direwolf. Castle Black - Headquarters of the Night's Watch at the Wall. Benjen Stark - First Ranger of the Night's Watch. Missing north of the wall. Younger brother of Eddard Stark. Jon receives great news that Sam will indeed be joining him in taking his Night's Watch vows. Less joyful that Jon doesn't get the job he wants or expects. The boys take their vows while Ghost plays a macabre game of fetch. Mackelly and Simon, whose watch began 49 episodes ago, thank the latest watchers on the wall. Chapter Review: Somehow Jon beats Sam to breakfast, but maybe Sam was weighed down by news that he'll be taking Chett's place as steward to Maester Aemon. Jon is understandably pleased with himself. They hurry to the sept where the Night's Watch bigwigs are gathered to welcome their newest brothers. Mormont assigns each of them to a role. Everyone goes pretty much where you'd expect, apart from Jon who is mystifyingly assigned to the Stewards as Mormont's attendant. Jon gets mad. His friends point out that he is being groomed for leadership and he should stop his moaning. Jon and recently converted Samwell say their vows before the Old Gods in a weirwood north of the wall. They are welcomed to the brotherhood by a few crows who accompanied them, but the reverie comes to an abrupt galt when Ghost trots into the circle carrying an unidentified human hand. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Jon Snow - Bastard son of Ned Stark. The Wall - Really big wall separating the Seven Kingdoms from the wild north of the continent. Seven hundred feet tall and stretching from coast to coast. Support the podcast. Buy some merch from our store. Just know; “we do not kneel.” A prophecy of Cersei's children is relived through memory, Tywin Lannister is laid to rest, and a mysterious group called the Son's of the Harpy makes their first brutal appearance. Daenerys struggles with making a decision about re-opening the fighting pits while to the north, Mance Rayder tells Jon Snow "The freedom to make my own mistakes is all I ever wanted". In Dorne, Ellaria demands justice for Oberyn Martell's untimely death. In Bravos, Arya enters the House of Black and White. Meanwhile, Stannis Baratheon makes Jon Snow a very tempting offer. Join the Riddikulus crew as we debate the most intelligent character in Game of Thrones, analyze Jon Snow's big decision and also tackle an in depth plot summary of the first two episodes of Season 5 (FFC Part 2)! Just like Sam Tarly characterizes Jon Snow during the election of the next Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, when it comes to breaking down and debating fantasy topics, we want to be "The commanders you turn to, when the night is darkest."

Jon befriends a brand new recruit, who is very different from most of the brothers of the Night's Watch. Sam Tarly is a large, soft, admitted coward, and Jon can't understand why he's joined the Black Brothers. When we hear his sad story, we get that he didn't have much of a choice. Chapter Review Jon Snow and the other recruits are training in the armory when in walks a huge boy of 15 dressed in fine clothes. After ridiculing him, Ser Alliser tests the boy's fighting skills, by pitting him against a big strong boy named Halder. The fight ends in seconds with Sam on the ground crying. When Ser Alliser won't let Halder stop beating him, Jon jumps in and defends Sam. It turns into a three-on-three battle that Jon, Pyp, and Grenn win. They learn Sam is the firstborn son of Lord Randyll Tarly, and he tells them he's a coward. Later, Sam tells Jon he didn't have a choice to join the Night's Watch. His father did not care for his soft, gentle nature. He preferred that Sam's younger brother Dickon be his heir. On his 15th nameday, his father told Sam that if he didn't join the Night's Watch, he was going to kill him. Jon then convinces the rest of the boys to go easy on Sam. Only Rast requires a little convincing, which Ghost is more than happy to provide. Characters/Places/Names/Events Jon Snow - Bastard Son of Lord Ned Stark. Recruit to the Night's Watch. Samwell Tarly - New recruit of the Night's Watch. Son of Lord Randyll Tarly. Pyp - Recruit of the Night's Watch. Small and talented at imitations and voices. Grenn - Recruit of the Night's Watch. Big, slow, and not very bright. Ser Alliser Throne - Master-at-arms of the Night's Watch. Mean, bitter, and humorless. Donel Noye - One-armed armorer and smith of the Night's Watch. Randyll Tarly - Sam's father. Lord of Horn Hill. Bannerman to Mace Tyrell of Highgarden. Dickon Tarly - Sam's younger brother. Now heir to Randyll Tyrell.Horn Hill - The seat of House Tarly in the Reach.Heartsbane - The ancestral two-handed Valyrian steel sword of House Tarly.Support the podcast. Andrew and Manu catch up with Dany in Essos, where everything has gone to hell. She wakes up after collapsing outside Mirri Maz Duur's blood magic tent, where she learns to her horror that she traded her unborn son Rhaego's life for a comatose Drogo. (The identically named recent Targaryen history, "Fire and Blood" provides some intriguing parallels between what became of Rhaego and Maegor the Cruel's "children.") Dany demands to know why Mirri did this, but Mirri is unapologetic. Other scenes include Tyrion deciding to bring Shae to King's Landing against Tywin's wishes, and Jon Snow's midnight ride from the Watch. In the latter, Sam unsuccessfully tries on his own to stop Jon from leaving, but he gets more help from Grenn & Pyp in a later scene in the woods of The Gift that we also discuss. By reminding Jon that they are his brothers now, he is convinced to stay. Stay tuned for some brief direwolf musings as well. Andrew and Manu kick off July with a podcast on "The Pointy End" that mainly centers around Robb Stark. His events begin and end the scenes today, as he first stands up for himself against Greatjon Umber with the Northern lords gathered at Winterfell, then talks with Bran briefly about his planned early departure, and closes out the show by meeting up with his mother, Catelyn, who has tracked his army down. Richard Madden's superb acting offers plenty to discuss, as do the emotions behind Robb's actions. Robb's not all there is to this episode, though. We also have eerie premonitions with Bran and a saddened Rickon, Sam Tarly musing on the wights burning at the Wall, and Osha talking to Bran in the Godswood about the old gods. Oh, and we also see Hodor's package. There's a big man! Onward.
