Join Leon and Beth for your monthly stargazing guide as they explore the Borloo night sky this March. As Bunuru lingers, the warm nights offer perfect conditions for spotting Mars and Jupiter shining brightly in the north. Meanwhile, Saturn, Venus, and Mercury remain hidden in the Sun's glare but will start to emerge late in the month, with even better views coming in April. Look high in the southern sky to spot the Argo Navis constellation, and in the west, keep an eye out for the lesser-known Lepus—the celestial hare—hopping beneath Orion's feet. Plus, learn about the March equinox and how the Earth's wobble has shifted the night sky over time!

StarDate Podcast

The Sun is a middle-aged star. It’s been shining for about four and a half billion years, and it’s expected to keep on shining for billions of years more. But some stars that are only a fraction of the Sun’s age are well into the final stages of life. These stars are much more massive than the Sun, and it’s a star’s mass that determines its timeline. An example is Arneb, the leading light of Lepus, the rabbit. The constellation stands below the feet of Orion the hunter. The rabbit is in the southeast at nightfall. Arneb is only about 13 million years old, yet it’s well into old age. In fact, it’s likely to expire within the next million years or so. That’s because Arneb is about 14 times the mass of the Sun. Its powerful gravity squeezes its core tightly. That heats the core, revving up the nuclear reactions that power the star. The extreme radiation from the core pushes on the surrounding layers of gas, making the star puff up – Arneb is more than a hundred times the diameter of the Sun. If it took the Sun’s place in our own solar system, it would gobble up the planet Mercury and come close to Venus, the second planet from the Sun. And the star may get even bigger in the future. Eventually, Arneb will no longer be able to generate nuclear reactions in its core. The core will collapse, and the star’s outer layers will blast into space – bringing the short, brilliant life of Arneb to a fiery end. Script by Damond Benningfield

Steve spends another week busy with HS hockey and Brandon has taken up Taekwondo as an adult. Night of the Lepus: Man's interference in nature comes back to bite him, with two giant anterior incisors. First, a farmer kills off all the coyotes on his land. Then, with no natural predators, the place is overrun by rabbits. What's he supposed to do now? Recruit a scientist to inject chemicals and hormones into the rabbits to kill them off, of course. But, as bad luck would have it, one of the modified rabbits is set free. That little fella procreates prolifically, as rabbits do, and soon, the Arizona countryside has to deal with a horde of giant bunny rabbits. Night of the Lepus final grade: Steve: Takes me back to the old days in Columbus, OH, hiding under my covers and watching creature features with Fritz the Nite Owl. Not a fantastically well-done movie, but the lighting is terrific and the nostalgia even better. 3.89/5.0 Brandon: A snuff film Elmer Fudd would love. Quaintly charming for its lack of special effects used on the "terrifying" rabbit menace. Worth watching if you're curious about stepping outside the standard horror spectacle. 3.03/5.0 MOCKtail of the Week: Sparkling Cherry Mocktail with Lime 2 oz Unsweetened Cherry Juice, "the expensive shit" 1 oz Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice 1 oz Cherry Simple Syrup Sparkling Water or Club Soda Combine all non-fizzy ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Shake to chill and combine, then strain into a rocks glass over ice. Top with sparkling water. Garnish with lime wedge/slice and cherries. To turn it into a cocktail, Steve added two ounces of vodka Mocktail Grade: A very good non-alcoholic drink. Also, with no articial ingredients and all that stuff, it's a great replacement for your soda of choice. 4.5/5 Cocktail Grade: Delicious and sweet as the NA version. Oddly, kinda picked up a hint of vanilla flavor with the added vodka. Tones down the cherry a bit. 4.5/5 ------------------ Contact us with feedback or cocktail/movie recommendations to: boozeandbmovies@gmail.com X: @boozeandbmovies Instagram: @boozeandbmovies Threads: @boozeandbmovies www.facebook.com/boozeandbmovies

Perhaps the most important number that astronomers need to know about a star is its distance. That allows them to calculate the star’s true brightness, which helps them calculate the star’s mass, its stage in life, and much more.An example is Arneb, the brightest star of Lepus, the rabbit. At nightfall, the constellation stands to the lower right of Orion, below Rigel, the star that marks the hunter’s foot.Estimates of Arneb’s distance vary by quite a bit — from as close as about 1300 light-years, to as far as about 2200. Astronomers compare the star’s distance to how bright it appears in our sky to determine its true brightness. At the lesser distance, the star would be more than three times fainter than at the greater distance. And that factors into the understanding of the star’s mass, its life cycle, and its fate.Probably the best measurement of the distance comes from Gaia, a space telescope. It’s measured the distances to roughly 1.7 billion stars. Above Earth’s atmosphere, it has a sharp view of the heavens, helping it to make more precise measurements.Gaia says that Arneb is a little more than 1900 light-years away. That means the star is roughly 10,000 times brighter than the Sun. It’s a supergiant — it’s many times the size and mass of the Sun. And it’s nearing the end of its life. In the next million years or so, it’s expected to explode as a supernova — giving Orion a real hotfoot. Script by Damond Benningfield

Orion has been my favorite winter constellation for many years. Sometimes subtitled “The Hunter,” it seems apt that Orion is lying on his side these days, perhaps resting up from early mornings of deer hunting. Traditionally, of course, his quarry was more mythical—chasing the beautiful seven sisters of Pleiades, doing battle with Taurus the Bull, fighting a scorpion sent to tame his ego, or hunting the constellation Lepus the Hare.

Tread Perilously's annual Star Trek month continues with a look at Star Trek: The Animated Series and the episode called "The Magicks of Megas-Tu." When the Enterprise's latest mission takes them to the center of the galaxy -- yes, you read that right -- they find Megas-Tu, a world where the usual rules of matter and physics are set aside for something that can only be described as magick. There, the crew meets Lucien, a jovial goatman who regrets ever leaving the Earth. Unfortunately, the arrival of the Enterprise leads to a rather literal witch hunt with Kirk, Spock, and the others on trial and professing their sympathy for the devil. Justin argues TAS fits into the Original Series ethos. He also adds Night of the Lepus to The Full Peril watch list. Erik tries to remember the stated stardate for once. The imprecise use of the term "quadrant" is discussed. Gene Roddenberry's proclivities, naturally, come up again. The Filmation method is critiqued. The story's focus on the Devil leads to a lot of talk about the development of both Judaism and Christianity. Baphomet's PR team succeeds in restoring his rep. Erik has trouble with the Charm of Making. Various gods are cast with older actors. James Doohan ends up the episode MVP and even the Ancient Astronaut Theory makes its way into the proceedings.

Messier 79 is a bit of an oddball. Unlike most star clusters of its type, it lines up “behind” us as seen from the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. And astronomers are having a hard time figuring out just where it came from. M79 is a globular cluster — a tightly packed ball of tens of thousands of stars. It's about 42,000 light-years away, in Lepus, the rabbit. The Milky Way hosts about 150 globulars. Most of them were born with the Milky Way itself. That means they contain some of the oldest stars in the entire galaxy. But a few dozen globulars don't appear to be home grown. Instead, they were born in other galaxies. Some were snatched from the outskirts of those galaxies as the Milky Way gobbled them up. Others may have started as the cores of other galaxies, but they, too, were grabbed by the Milky Way. M79 might be a refugee from the Canis Major Dwarf — a possible small galaxy that the Milky Way may be ingesting even now. A second globular may come from that galaxy as well. Another idea says the Milky Way grabbed M79 billions of years ago, when it merged with a mid-sized galaxy. And yet other ideas suggest other birthplaces for M79 — an oddball star cluster. Lepus is close to the lower right of bright Orion, low in the southeast at nightfall. It remains below Orion's feet as they wheel across the south later on. M79 is below the outline of the rabbit. You need binoculars to pick it out.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

Dr. James Noble is a BFD neurologist at Columbia in New York City. But as a college student in the 90's, Jamie Noble hung out at Lucy's Record Shop to feed the love of live music that's clearly part of his DNA. Jamie remembers a lot about Lucy's -  the bands he saw (Bugskull, Low, Blonde Redhead, Crop Circle Hoax, etc.), the 7” records he bought, the time everybody got kicked out and had to watch Doo Rag play their show on the sidewalk, and the one time he played a show there with his band, Lepus. Music and the arts have informed a lot of what Jamie does. He's been taping shows since 1998 and his recordings are housed at the University of Georgia in the archives of Henry Owings of Chunklet. With his colleague, Dr. Olajide Williams, he started what has become the Hip Hop Public Health fleet of programs, working closely with Sesame Street animators, producer Artie Green, and musicians like Doug E. Fresh, Easy A.D. of the Cold Crush Brothers, DMC, and Chuck D. He also founded a non-profit organization, Arts & Minds, which promotes well-being for dementia patients and their caregivers via art-centered, museum-based programs and experiences in upper Manhattan. As a neurologist, Dr.Noble specializes in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias and has just released a book, “Navigating Life with Dementia” (part of the Brain & Life series, Oxford University Press/American Academy of Neurology). It's a joy to listen to Jamie talk about his time at Lucy's and his love of music. A faithful hunting dog is following his master into the evening twilight. They'll both disappear within a few days or weeks, then return to view this summer — in the morning sky. The master is Orion, the hunter. His constellation is one of the most beautiful of all. It's also one of the easiest to find. As twilight begins to fade, look for it low in the west, with Orion's three-star belt parallel to the horizon. Brilliant Betelgeuse is above the belt, with Rigel below it, barely in sight. Orion is trailed by Canis Major, the big dog. It's easy to pick out as well because it includes the brightest star in the night sky: Sirius, the Dog Star. It's to the left of Orion's Belt. Not surprisingly, ancient skywatchers paid a lot of attention to Sirius. And they crafted many stories about him and his constellation. In one, the dog was caught in a wild chase with a nasty fox. The fox couldn't be caught, and the dog couldn't miss his quarry. To end the never-ending race, Zeus turned both animals to stone, and placed Canis Major in the stars. In another story, Canis Major was one of Orion's hunting dogs. He's chasing Lepus, the rabbit, which is below Orion's feet. He follows Orion everywhere — including into the evening twilight every spring. Hunter and hunting dog will begin to vanish over the coming days. Both of them will be out of sight by late May. Orion will return to view in July, with Canis Major following in August. Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

This week we have a special Easter Episode with a look at the 1972 film Night of the Lepus. This is Episode #366! Night of the Lepus (also known as Rabbits) is a 1972 American science fiction horror film directed by William F. Claxton and produced by A. C. Lyles. Based upon Russell Braddon's 1964 science fiction novel The Year of the Angry Rabbit, the plot concerns an infestation of mutated rabbits. The film was the first science fiction work for producer Lyles and for director Claxton, both of whom came from Western film backgrounds. Character actors from Westerns the pair had worked on were brought in to star, including Stuart Whitman, Janet Leigh, Rory Calhoun and DeForest Kelley. Shot in Arizona, Night used domestic rabbits filmed against miniature models and actors dressed in rabbit costumes for the attack scenes.

The big, bright constellation Orion scampers across the southwestern quadrant of the sky on March nights. It's high in the sky at nightfall, just past due south, and doesn't fully set until about 2 a.m. Look for its three-star belt. At nightfall, it's flanked by bright orange Betelgeuse to the upper left, and blue-white Rigel to the lower right. In mythology, Orion was a hunter. And one of the creatures he hunted stands just below his feet. Lepus, the rabbit, contains a few moderately bright stars. Their proximity to Orion makes them easier to pick out. The brightest is Arneb. And it really is a bright star — more than 30,000 times brighter than the Sun. In fact, it's impressive just about any way you look at it. It's far bigger and heavier than the Sun, and it faces a more impressive fate — it will explode as a supernova. Arneb is only about 13 million years old, compared to four-and-a-half billion years for the Sun. But because it's so much more massive, it “burns” through the fuel in its core much more quickly. As a result, it's already nearing the end of its life. Changes in its core have caused it to puff up — it's big enough to extend to the orbit of Mercury or beyond if it took the Sun's place. Soon, it'll get even bigger and brighter. Eventually, though, it will stop producing nuclear reactions in its core. The core will collapse, with the outer layers blasting out into space — giving the hunter a bit of a hotfoot.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory
