PUBLIC VERSION. Writer/director Gil Kenan (MONSTER HOUSE, GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE, SATURDAY NIGHT) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to share his incredible career journey. From how the devastating 1994 Northridge earthquake changed his path from the theater to the cinema… to working with both Zemeckis AND Spielberg on creating the animated classic MONSTER HOUSE… to his fateful meeting with fellow filmmaker Jason Reitman and the incredible creative partnership that followed… to the importance of accessing truth even when working with established IPs like SNL and GHOSTBUSTERS… to surviving the “beautiful disaster” that was CITY OF EMBER and the sad truth about how IMPRACTICAL JOKERS and VICTOR CROWLEY star Brian Quinn ALMOST made it into GHOST BUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE… Gil's story is legendary! Seriously, what other filmmaker got to direct the latest adventure by the Ghostbusters AND write the definitive film on the making of Saturday Night Live all in one year?!
Hey there, fellow watchers! It's your host Whitey, flying solo once again for this special edition of Born to Watch. After last week's popular solo mailbox episode, he's back on the mic, diving deep into the year that was 2024—a year that, in Whitey's words, wasn't exactly Hollywood's finest. With a trusty mix of humour, honesty, and more than a few nostalgic callbacks to the glory days of video shops, Whitey gives us his take on the Good, the Bad, and the downright Ugly movies of 2024. This episode covers everything, whether you're looking for hidden gems, blockbuster letdowns, or absolute cinematic disasters, so strap in for the best and worst movies of 2024.The Good – Movies Worth Your TimeKicking things off with the Good list, Whitey revisits some of the standout films of the year. First up is Alien: Romulus, a tense sci-fi thriller that Whitey still stands by after a couple of rewatches at home. Despite a few nitpicks—like the unnecessary hybrid twist and a clunky android character—he praises its gripping tension, stellar action, and atmospheric set design reminiscent of the original Alien film. Whitey even boldly declares it might just be the third-best movie in the franchise!Next, it's time for some weather chaos with Twisters, the legacy sequel that brought just enough nostalgia without going overboard. Whitey recounts his less-than-ideal cinema experience (complete with overly chatty patrons) but admits the film was still a blast, thanks to Glen Powell's charisma and a twin-tornado showdown that kept him glued to his seat. And, of course, Whitey couldn't leave out Deadpool and Wolverine, a crowd-pleaser packed with slapstick humour, MCU references, and the electric chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. From the toe-tapping spectacle of Wicked to Denis Villeneuve's stunning epic Dune: Part 2, Whitey breaks down what made these films worth watching—and why you should check them out if you haven't already. He even gives a shoutout to Juror #2, Clint Eastwood's final film, calling it a fitting farewell for the legendary director. The Bad – Not Terrible, Just DisappointingIn the Bad section, Whitey tackles films that had potential but ultimately fell short. First on the chopping block is Furiosa, George Miller's Mad Max prequel that struggled without Max himself. While Whitey appreciates Miller's world-building and some solid action scenes, the bloated runtime and over-reliance on CGI left him underwhelmed. He also critiques Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which failed to capture the charm of its predecessor despite the return of the original trio.Whitey wraps up this section by discussing The Fall Guy, a disappointing adaptation of a beloved 80s TV show. Despite its promising cast—Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt—the film's ludicrous plot and lack of heart earned it a spot on the Bad list. The Ugly – The Year's Biggest LetdownsFinally, we arrive at the Ugly, where Whitey unleashes his full frustration on Joker: Folie à Deux. He doesn't mince words, calling it a “trainwreck of boredom and arrogance” that destroyed the original's brilliance. While Whitey has a soft spot for musicals, this wasn't the kind of musical he could get behind.Bonus Mentions & What's Coming NextFor those who stick around till the end, Whitey throws in a couple of honourable mentions, including Gladiator 2—a film that, while unnecessary, still delivered some fun moments—and Inside Out 2, a sequel that entertained without reaching the emotional depth of its predecessor.Looking ahead, Whitey teases next week's episode, where he and Damo will tackle The Last Jedi, one of the most divisive Star Wars films of all time. Expect fiery opinions, passionate debate, and plenty of laughs as the duo dissects what could be the worst Star Wars movie ever made.If you're a fan of brutally honest reviews, nostalgic movie talk, and Whitey's signature blend of wit and sarcasm, this episode is a must-listen. So grab your popcorn, settle in, and enjoy this rollercoaster ride through 2024's cinematic highs and lows. Until next time—BYE FOR NOW!Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcasthttps://www.borntowatch.com.au/

Hello and welcome back to Franchise Me! This week we triple down on movies as we cover a few of the movies that have been added to the franchises that we already covered. We break down a disappointing Night at the Museum animated film, a fantastic Puss and Boots movie, and the subpar latest addition in the Ghostbusters franchise. The last month of the year calls for a hoard of annual, year-end traditions. For some, that may involve decorating evergreen pines, for others, the estimation of Q4 tax payments, but for those of us of a certain generation, the last month of the year can mean only one thing: Spotify Wrapped. For those uninitiated, Spotify users receive a fun little slide show showcasing what songs they listened to most this year. It's all fun and games except this year, Spotify did a bad job. Enter the nerds at DT!HQ who have tasked us with making Spotify look better. To do that, they've asked us to put our heads together and brainstorm: "What's the worst 'Wrapped' report you could possibly get at the end of the year?" Matt's doing movies. Todd's doing video games. Kyle's doing everything else. We're running a Listener Survey for the first time ever! We'd love your input. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire directly proceeds the events of 2021's Afterlife, following the Spengler gang as they begin their exploits in the Big Apple. Wider in scope and scale than its predecessor, Frozen Empire features plenty of ghoulish fun for fans of the franchise. However, it's also poorly paced and overstuffed with characters and sub-plots—some of which work far better than others. That latter fact is probably why critics skewered it upon its release. At 42% on Rotten Tomatoes, Frozen Empire is the worst reviewed entry in the storied franchise. Those tepid reactions may have been responsible for its soft box office. Costing $25 million more to produce than its predecessor, Frozen Empire grossed slightly less ($201 million vs $204 million worldwide). Despite that, it is hard to ignore its charms, and the presence of the OG Ghostbusters is sure to make the most pessimistic of us smile. Now, sit back, make the busting feel that much better with a Joe-Joe's Chocolate Vanilla Creme Stout from Trader Joe's, and hit us with that mood slime! The Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, and Bling Blake are harnessing our Firemaster powers to put the heat on Garraka! Based on a 1980s television show of the same name, The Fall Guy seemed to be on course to be the summer season's first hit. Screening more than a month before its release at South by Southwest, the buzz (reviews included) for the Ryan Gosling/Emily Blunt film was strong. And with Gosling—who plays the titular character Colt Seavers—coming off of Barbie, his movie star bonafides had never been stronger. Yet, despite all that momentum, The Fall Guy failed to break the bank. It grossed just north of $181 million. Its budget was rumored to be around $150 million—resulting in a break even point of roughly $275 million. The Fall Guy deserved so much better during its theatrical run, especially considering the hell all the stunt people went through to deliver this delightful gem. Now, sit back, take the liquid courage leap after a Long Leash from Sleepy Dog Brewing, and attaque! The Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, Bling Blake, and a special guest are crying in our car listening to T. Swift! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Fall hard! Who says you can't go home? When your home is the Big Apple, it's kind of hard to say no. But, when your home is a New York City that's still overrun with a ghost problem…maybe it's time for a move? This week, we're gathered around the table and an ungodly amount of delicious food to talk about all the things we haven't over the last two months: Hasbro's Haslab Ecto-1, Mondo's Real Ghostbusters figures, Waxwork Records' Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire vinyl soundtrack release, a Cleanin' Up the Town book, and so much more! Once we're done with all of those courses, we'll get to the dessert that we saved for last: is Dan Akyroyd hanging up Ray Stantz's skates? Chris and Troy don't think so, but we'll do our best to decrypt his encoded message!

Editors Nathan Orloff and Shane Reid SATURDAY NIGHT editors Nathan Orloff and Shane Reid team up for the second time in 2024 with their latest Jason Reitman / Gil Keenan project about NBC's long-running sketch comedy show. Having previously cut GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE together, the pair developed a strong working relationship that certainly came in handy when Shane had to do double duty between this project and DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE (2024). SATURDAY NIGHT is a frenetic dramatization of what happened behind the scenes during the ninety minutes leading up to the first broadcast of NBC's Saturday Night on October 11th, 1975, when a dynamic young producer named Lorne Michaels lead a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers in changing television forever. NATHAN ORLOFF Nathan Orloff is known for his editing on TULLY (2018), PLAN B (2021), GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE (2021), JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 (2023) and GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE (2024). SHANE REID As a partner of the award-winning post house Exile Edit, Shane has been nominated for, and won, multiple awards for his work in the commercial space with top brands including Apple, Adidas, BMW, Hennessy, Audi and the Olympics. He quickly became one of the most trusted short form editors, working with such directors as Damien Chazelle, Terrence Malick, Andrew Dominik, Jason Reitman, Craig Gillespie, Blake Lively, John Hillcoat & Chloe Zhao. He has also cut multiple music videos for Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney, Florence + The Machine and Kamasi Washington. In 2018, Reid edited on the film A Hidden Life for director Terrence Malick. He recently cut the short film I'm on Fire for director Michael Spiccia which premiered at the 2022 Toronto and Clermont-Ferrand International Festivals.
