Join me on this episode with our guest speaker, Alessandra Montana, who is connecting with us from Milano, Italy. I met Alessandra many years ago at a Yoga Teacher Training in Venice, California, and we immediately became friends. What I love about Alessandra is her deep connection to spirit, her commitment to self-healing and to making a difference. She not only talks the talks, she definitely walks it. Alessandra is a Sound Keeper, a Vibrational Alchemist, Sound Keeper, Gong Master, a Reiki therapist, and a Yoga Teacher, deeply connected with the Energy of Mother Earth and with a soulful interest in indigenous traditions, old-times fairy tales, and angels.  Alessandra is trained ( Saul David Raye, Shiva Rea) in Bhakti & Hatha Yoga, and through her love for Kirtan, she started her journey into the magic Universe of Sound and Vibrations by taking on the studies with pioneers in sound healing and with the Grand Gong Master Don Conreaux. Alessandra has been offering Sound Journey for the past 10 years and teaching the mastery of the Gong ( in Tulum, internationally, and online) for the past 5 years.
Her work has been mentioned in Yoga Journal USA, 66 Minutes ( M6- French television), NewYork Times, Vogue Uomo (Italy), and Hollywood Reporter, to mention a few. She was chosen as private sound therapist for the Grateful Dead band, for the fans of Dave Matthews Band, The Phish during their Mexican tour, and as well for the virtual launch of the 2020 virtual Festival of Cannes.  Alessandra has been living in Tulum since 2010. Today, Laura catches up with her dear friend, fellow competitive platform diver, and bridesmaid in her wedding, Cristi Christensen. Originally an elite-level gymnast, Cristi went on to train with the US Olympic diving team as a young adult. After an injury cut her Olympic dreams short, Cristi shifted her focus to helping others improve their level of fitness through personal training, Pilates, Core Fusion, and yoga. In addition to a degree in Kinesiology, Cristi has studied extensively for over 10 years with world-renowned teachers including Saul David Raye, Shiva Rea, Seane Corn, Elisabeth Halfpapp, and Fred DeVito. Cristi begins by sharing what inspired her to get into gymnastics, her journey to becoming an elite gymnast, her transition to diving, and the injuries that ultimately ended her Olympic dreams. She goes on to describe what drove her to yoga, how it changed her, and why she eventually began teaching it. Cristi also details her experience as a global traveling yoga teacher, how the pandemic caused her to pivot yet again, and the outcome of her most recent pivot. The episode draws to a close with an overview of Cristi's work to expand the definition of wellness and well-being, and how her style of yoga brings her back to how she grew up. Cristi's story of responding to injuries with her determination to bounce back, keep learning and moving forward will captivate and inspire all who listen into this fascinating conversation today. Episode Highlights: Cristi's transition from being an elite gymnast to an elite diver Diving injuries ended her dream of the Olympics, just as they'd ended her gymnastics career How Cristi's pain and anxiety drove her to yoga How yoga changed her Cristi begins to teach fitness classes, but she refused to teach yoga What changed her mind? How flying by the seat of her pants helped launch her career as a global traveling yoga teacher How the pandemic forced Cristi to pivot yet again The outcome of Cristi's most recent pivot Cristi's work to expand the definition of wellness and well-being How Cristi's style of yoga, which incorporates dance and music, brings her back to how she grew up Quotes: “My mom was like ‘No more. No more. I know it's your dream but we're not risking you being paralyzed.' And there was no pushing… that was the end of my gymnastics career.” “That's just so quick though, too. I mean, you go for a summer, doing a sport you've never done, and you just decide to move for your last two years of high school. Like, that's pretty intense. But it sounds like that's kind of the way you roll.” “I did shatter my left hand into a million pieces. Basically, I had three metal plates and 22 screws to put it back together.” “And that's where joy, like a joy of movement, started coming back. My body was healing, I was connecting to my breath.” “But now I had a new lens on it, because the practice I was doing was healing me and I wanted to be able to share that with others… I taught tons of different fitness classes and was still doing yoga as my personal practice… yoga really opened me up in a way that I didn't even know I was closed.” “Every time you show up and do it, those voices will get smaller.” “I had some really bizarre instances that just made it so, so clear that the way I was living and the way I was working were no longer in alignment.” “I got to a point where the fear of if I failed was much smaller than the fear of actually staying and staying small and staying trapped in something.” “Over the years it evolved… how could something that was so right, now be something that's actually a detriment to the evolution of my career or the evolution of where in my soul I believe I wanted to go?” “I just thought I was going to be hanging out in LA for six months, like figuring it out… but as the opportunities came, I was like, ‘Well, I just have to say yes'.” “I didn't realize I had all my eggs in one basket; I thought I was diversified.” “Everything I teach is based off of ‘how can we use this as a map for our own empowerment, our own awakening, so that we can live a life that is full of color and rich in love and passion and freedom, but really be grounded in this very human experience and be able to deal with everything that life brings?'” “The whole idea was to share women's stories… I want more women's voices to be heard. I want more kids growing up to have more access to role models from different backgrounds.” “I'm not teaching a routine. It's not like ‘5, 6, 7, 8'. It's actually getting you to a place that you feel free enough to express and to move and to breathe, and just enjoy the aliveness and the power pulsing through your body - letting it move, letting the emotions move, letting everything just flow. And it's super powerful and super fun!” Pursuit of Gold Podcast is brought to you by Kaatsu Global.  Hi friends! I'm so excited to be partnering with Dr. Stephen Cabral on some upcoming podcast episodes, including this one. You can check out his 21 Day Detox at $100 off or a 7 Day Detox at $20 off here!  Today, we're going to talk about something that has come and gone out of my life a few different times, depending on what was going on. I'm back into my meditation mojo right now and it's been so incredible to make it a part of my life again. My dreams are vivid each night, I sleep soundly, and I feel more peaceful and focused throughout the day. In today's episode, I'm excited to share more about what meditation is, how to use it in your routine, and different methods you can try at home. Listen to the full episode here: [smart_track_player url="" title="097: Benefits of meditation and how to implement it in your life" social_linkedin="true" social_pinterest="true" social_email="true" ] 097: Benefits of meditation and how to implement it in your life Meditation has been linked to so many possible benefits, including promoting a healthy blood pressure, potentially improve anxiety, depression, and insomnia, and reducing pain. It's also been shown to potentially help with digestive issues and smoking cessation. It can also help increase resiliency to stress, which is a huge reason why I am thankful for it. According to a 2015 study from Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, mindfulness practices dampen activity in our amygdala, which is responsible for experiencing strong emotions, like fear, pleasure or anger. In this study, it demonstrated increased connections between the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, which help us to be less reactive to stressors and an improved stress response.  While meditation has been used in various cultures for thousands of years, it's become increasingly popular in the United States in the past 15 years or so. A 2017 National Health Interview Survey found that US adults' meditation tripled between 2012 and 2017, and children's meditation increased from 0.6% in 2012 to 5.4% in 2017. It's estimated that 3.1 million US children use mindfulness meditation in school. It's estimated that between 200 and 500 million people meditate worldwide, and the top 10 meditation apps generated $195 million in sales in 2019. (I'm realllyyyyy interested to know how much more they made in 2020 - now.)  Types of meditation: There are so many different types of meditation, but it usually involves some combination of the following: - a quiet location - a comfortable posture - focusing on breath - drawing your attention inwards and letting wandering thoughts come and go Just like so many other things in our health routines, meditation can have therapeutic properties, BUT it's not a substitute for traditional therapy. If you're struggling with anxiety or depression, please seek out the help you deserve.  How to meditate: 1) Find a comfortable position in a quiet space. You can sit in a chair, on the ground, on a yoga mat, or lie down (if you're not sleepy). I use my PEMF Go Mat! I don't recommend meditating in bed because you don't want to tie meditation with sleep. You can also listen to crystal bowls, binaural beats on Spotify, or some instrumental slow music. 2) Set a timer. This can be anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour, depending on how much time you have. I've been doing 7 minutes lately, which doesn't seem like a lot, but it's just enough to feel the benefits and not overwhelming to the point that I won't do it. Be realistic with your time goal and start small; build up from there.  3) Start to take deep breaths and just notice the rise and fall of your breath and all of the sensations around you.Feel yourself rooted into the ground or your mat, notice your heartbeat, any sounds around you, scents, the temperature of the air, and then bring your attention back to your breath.  4) Start to draw your focus inward and bring your attention to one specific thing as you breathe. I'm a huge fan of using a mantra in my meditation practice. When I did yoga teacher training, we learned Primordial Meditation (the Deepak Chopra method, as our instructor also taught at the Chopra Institute) and received our own personal mantra. Some sample (and simple) mantras: “Ham-sah” (meaning “I am that”) “I love you, I'm sorry, Please forgive me, Thank You” – Ho'oponopono (Hawaiian) Mantra  (Saul David Raye used this during a workshop, and I found it to be so healing and peaceful) “Om” (there are 4 sounds to this: ah, oh, mmmm, and the silence that follows. “Om” is used as a charging sound, and brings intention to the universe) You can also create your own, using two words that you want to FEEL throughout your day, or two words that resonate with you. On the inhale, think of one word, and on the exhale, focus on the second word. The combo that I used when I was first starting my meditation journey: peace (inhale), calm (exhale). What happens if your thoughts wander during meditation? It's no.big.deal. Just notice what's happening, let the extra thoughts go, and bring your attention back to your mantra and your breath.  If you don't feel comfortable meditating on your own, you can absolutely try a guided meditation. There are SO many amazing resources now! You can use the Calm app, Headspace, Peloton meditation, or try a free one from YouTube (I love this gratitude meditation, which includes some of the soul questions I mentioned below).  Some other things you can do: - “Sandwich” your meditation practice with other habits that make you feel good. Before meditating, sit and ask yourself the 7 questions of the soul. It's a beautiful way to get to know yourself and tune in with your true self, desires, and purpose.  Who am I? What do I want? What is my purpose? How can I serve? - Try journaling before or after meditation, or use this time to read something you enjoy. - You can also follow your meditation with some mobility work, sun salutations, or gentle movement. - Or you can be like me and set your timer for 7 minutes and get on with your day. ;)  I hope that you enjoyed this short episode on meditation and also hope you feel inspired to test it out! If you decide to give it a whirl, please report back and let me know how it goes.  xoxo Gina More: Breathing exercises for anxiety You vagus nerve and why you should care about it Resources from this episode: Check out Dr. Cabral's Detox program here and get a 21 Day Detox at $100 off or a 7 Day Detox at $20 off.  Your liver filters all of the blood in your body every 6 minutes, but with the influx of toxins in our environment, our livers cannot keep up and our bodies have no choice but to store these toxins away in our fat cells, organs, and even our brain so they are not floating around in our blood stream. Over time this toxic buildup begins to cause symptoms of poor health and eventually can lead to all types of dis-eases in the body. The Dr. Cabral detox is a comprehensive, full body Functional Medicine detoxification system that gently eliminates harmful toxins while rebalancing the body at an underlying root cause level. My guest this week joins me for her third appearance on the podcast. Join us for an in-depth conversation on overcoming struggle, and living your best life! Guest Bio: Thank you for seeing me. I'm Kimi Dawn, in case we haven't met yet. I'm a California-based certified yoga teacher, Reiki Master, living room dancer, and your humble 'reminder' that we are all in this 'circle' together. I know that the magic happens outside the comfort zone and the pictograph that tells you to be the dot outside the circle. Yes, please be that dot, but remember that this circle is to support you when you need to round up and be reminded none of us do it alone. Plus, there's just something really sacred and soul connecting when we Circle Us as seekers and consciousness contributors.Where I join the circle...Allow me to help remind you of who you really are and why YOU matter. We will explore the process through various ways of connecting you back to the 'real' you that nobody else can be; authentic, soul-shining, and embracing the gift of your life or creating the life that is waiting for you! How? Explore my page, SEE what's available and allow yourself to be SEEN | An Experience of Presence. We are all creatives by nature, but along the way, I found myself in the certificate club. Here are the credentials, but mostly, it was about the teachers that had SEEN me, and helped me to remember it was best to continue being me. Certified through Tamal School of Yoga; Tamal Dodge & Sesa O'Connor (200 hours of Vinyasa Flow) and Silk Roads Sangha; Daniel Hickman & Denise Antonini (200 hours Mulit-disciplinary Yoga). 35 hours of SmartFlow with Annie Carpenter & an Embody Love Movement facilitator focusing on positive body image and community awareness. Reiki Master Teacher under the Usui Reiki Method and Karuna Reiki practitioner. Soul reviving 8-week program called "Daily Love Mastery" with Mastin Kipp in 2014 and continues to be part of his online mentoring program "Claim Your Power™." Aside from formal yoga training, a lifetime ago I obtained a B.S. in Technical Management; was discharged as an Army Veteran, and always a humble mother of three amazing daughters whom are truly my best teachers. I've placed myself in the presence yogalebrities such as: Seane Corn, Kathryn Budig, Ashley Turner, and Saul David Raye, which have inspired my own practice and offerings. For more information, visit Kimi on the web: kimidawn.comKimi on Facebook   //   Think Outside the Lines Podcast Subscribe / Leave a review on iTunes Subscribe / Listen on Google Play Music Subscribe on Soundcloud Subscribe on Player.FM Subscribe on IHeartRadio Subscribe on Stitcher // If you would like to stay updated on all things podcast-related, click here to sign up for the mailing list.

My dear friend, brother, teacher and all around inspiration Govind Das stops by the kitchen table to talk with me about what yoga means in a 21st Century application, the path of bhakti, how to combat the Maya, embracing ones dharma and finding compassion in these troubling times. Govind Das is truly one of the great American yoga teachers and you should check out his classes and offerings whenever possible. INTRO TOPIC - my confusion around the new age community and the recent police brutality events. Govind Das first came to yoga while living in Los Angeles in 1994 because of health concerns- specifically ulcerative colitis/crohn's/inflammatory bowel disease... After years of many different practices with the intention of healing(hatha yoga, ayurveda, buddhist meditation etc), Ira Rosen found his yogic "home' in the path of Bhakti Yoga... the aspect of yoga frequently described as the "yoga of the heart" or "the yoga of love and devotion". Not by avoiding or denying our life and health challenges, but only by accepting and courageously moving through and forward, the flower of our full appreciation and devotion to Life blooms. It is in this tradition of "Bhakti/Devotion" where Ira was given his spiritual name- Govind Das or simply "Govindas" which means "servant of the Divine"... This path of service is at the root of his spiritual life- to serve the Love and Spirit that lives in the hearts of all. His journey has led him to India on 5 different occasions to immerse himself in the ways of the yoga tradition at the Ashram of his "Guru" or main spirtual teacher- Neem Karoli Baba, as well as spending time in holy yogic places like Vrindavan, Varanasi, Rishikesh and many more... Through his journeys to the "motherland of yoga"- India, Govindas has been blessed to enjoy the "darshan" or be in the company of many yogic saints, sadhus, and wise teachers- It is from these transmissions that Govindas shares the authenticity of the Bhakti path... As well Govindas would like to express heartfelt gratitude to his yoga teachers here in California - Bryan Kest, Saul David Raye, Shiva Rea, and Mark Whitwell... and bow to his Bhakti and Kirtan teachers Ram Dass, Jai Uttal, Bhagavan Das, Krishna Das, Shyam Das, Raghu Markusand many many more... www.bhaktiyogashala.com

Guided Meditation and Imagery.  May all beings everywhere be happy and free and may the thoughts, words and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all. This meditation is inspired by my love for humanity. The mantra was shared as a song by Saul David Raye...and became a beautiful mantra for me on my journeys through Costa Rica, Italy, Philippines, Gautemala and Los Angeles. It is the Truth I see in my minds eye and heart for all of humanity...After chanting this all night with two good friends under the moon...I was glowing for days.
