During pregnancy, the physical changes come in fast, and sometimes, furious! A great way to tune into these changes and create more body awareness is through “yoga asanas”, which are movements and poses from the ancient Indian tradition that promote physical & mental wellbeing. Prenatal yoga is becoming more popular these days as research and science points to the immense benefits of healthy and safe movements for birthing individuals. Not only can it help pregnant people throughout each trimester, but it can also assist in a smoother birth as well!In the show today, we have Deb Flashenberg, the founder and director of the Prenatal Yoga Center in NYC. Deb advocates for how yoga poses can help create more balance in the body so that birth flows better and there is less obstruction for the baby. She talks about “mock contractions” in her yoga classes that help her clients prepare for 60-seconds of physical and mental challenge during labor and delivery.Along with being a prenatal yoga teacher, Deb is also a labor support doula, Lamaze childbirth educator, mother of two and self proclaimed "birth and anatomy geek”. Deb received her first vinyasa yoga certification with Shiva Rea and then added to her education by completing the OM Yoga advance yoga teacher training with Cyndi Lee. Sally began her journey in the health and fitness industry in 1998 after qualifying as a personal trainer and gaining a bachelor in Sport Science in the year 2001. Soon after, she experienced a deep calling to explore a more holistic approach to movement and breath, which led to Sally certifying as a yoga and paranayama teacher, training with Paul Dallaghan and Sri Tiwari at @centered-yoga in Thailand, in addition to studying at K Pattabhi Jois The Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Mysore. From teaching her female students however, Sally could see that if yoga asana and pranayama was applied in a more bespoke manner with regards to the natural womb cycles that most women experience on a regular basis, the application of yoga could be even more profound. This led her to studying for several years in earnest with leader and pioneer in this field; Uma Dinsmore-Tuli, with whom she gained qualifications in Pregnancy and Postnatal Yoga and a Well Woman Yoga Therapy Diploma. Since then, Sally has gone on to train as a Doula with Michele O'Dent and a Pilates teacher with A.P.P.I. (Australian Pilates Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute) and has established her own yoga teacher training school The Sally Parkes Yoga Academy in 2010, training over 1500 yoga teachers to date. Now specializing in solely women's wellness, Sally's academy offers yoga that honours the cycles of menstruation, fertility, pregnancy, postnatal and menopause. Sally is also the author of three books, Yoga; the Modern Essential Guide and The Yoga Healing Handbook, and bestseller The Manual of Yoga Anatomy. Meditationslærer og forfatter Svend Trier og jeg taler i dette afsnit om yoga som spirituel praksis, hvilket også er titlen på Svends nyeste bog “Yoga - som spirituel praksis”. I dialogen udfoldes yogaens forskellige tilgange; Karma yoga (handlingens yoga), Bhakti yoga (hengivenhedens yoga), Gyan yoga (erkendelsens eller intellektets yoga) og Raja yoga (meditationens yoga). Svends bog undersøger og udfolder de dybeste aspekter af yogaen, og fremstiller hvad yogaen egentlig handler om, nemlig genforening. Det er en genforening hvor mennesket (gen)erfarer dets grundlæggende forbundethed til verden, en genforening der igennem yogaens forskellige veje kan opnås. Yoga er langt hen ad vejen blevet et synonym med en østlig gymnastisk bevægelsesform, hvor målet er smidighed, balance, kropskontrol, sundhed mv., men oprindeligt var yoga positurerne, kaldet Asanas, redskaber der skulle bidrage til yogaens helhed som spirituel praksis. Asanaerne er altså med andre ord blot én del af den spirituelle eller eksistentielle yoga, og fungerer som støtte til den meditationen, som beskrevet af den indiske mystiker og filosof Patanjali. Ligesom med mindfulness som vi ser det i MBSR, så tages disse praksisser i ‘vesten' ud af deres oprindelige kontekst, dette har en række fordele, men også nogle ulemper. Fordelene er at praksisserne kan undersøges i forskningen, og de kan integreres i et sekulært samfund. Ulemperne er at de trækkes ud af en helhed, hvis eksistentielle sigte for mennesket er langt mere gennemgribende og frigørende, end de er i deres moderne sekulære udtryk. Cristi's path to continuing as gymnast was shifted due to a back injury she sustained. Through healing from her injury holistically she transformed herself spiritually, mentally and emotionally. My guest today on The Happy Head Podcast is Jacky Power.Jacky lives in Dorking, Surrey and is a mother, therapist, and poet. She has an MSc in addiction psychology and counselling and specialises in social media addiction. Her writing has appeared in Om Yoga magazine, the Riza Press's 'The Uncertain Creative' COVID-19 support platform, the For Women Who Roar storytelling movement and various poetry anthologies. In 2019, she wrote and performed her own one-woman show called Light in Life's Shadows, which was about embracing the messiness of being human. Sarah Tucker is a travel journalist, broadcaster and author.  She teaches yoga in schools and clubs in South West London and Surrey.   She's won awards for her writing and broadcasting, and written best-selling novels, produced TV, radio and newspaper reports on her travels around the world, and written novels on events which make an impression on her – not usually a good impression. This week, Sarah talks with Bend and Bloom founder, Amy Quinn Suplina. In light of the unionization movement, these two women explore what it means to run an ethical yoga studio and how studios in New York City might be impacted by the move to unionize.Amy Quinn Suplina Amy has been teaching yoga since 2002 and founded Bend + Bloom in 2008.  She teaches a breath-based, contemplative Vinyasa that challenges us to find space in our bodies so that we can find room in our lives to live well and more fully.  She completed her first yoga teacher training with Kimberly Wilson, Simon Park, and Darren Main at Tranquil Space in Washington, DC in 2002 and with Cyndi Lee of Om Yoga in 2005. Her early days of teaching were balanced by her career in social justice and human rights organizing.  Amy believes contemplative practices, like yoga and meditation, are essential components to transform our habits so we can build and embody new skills to manifest what we care about in our lives and the world. Amy is trained in teaching Trauma Sensitive Yoga by the Trauma Center of Boston and completed the two-year Embodied Anatomy and Physiology course at the Breathing Project with Amy Matthews. She is also a certified Physioyoga Global practitioner.
