In episode 152 we bring back Brionne Olsen in South Africa. Brionne is a sound engineer, filmmaker and storyteller. He's been inspired to create smartphone videos and films since 2020. Brionne made a short film this year with the Elements Of Moment Dance Studio. The film is a beautiful dance performance choreographed by Ashley-Jade Miranda. Brionne asked for a performance that expressed women empowered through movement. He used his iPhone 11, an anamorphic lens, a gimbal and two lights. The film used mostly natural light in the studio and ambient sound captured on the phone, which he later mixed the audio and video in DaVinci Resolve. If you're in South Africa reach out to collaborate on his upcoming film. Brionne Olsen is an audio engineer, filmmaker and storyteller. Bringing his audio skills that he's acquired working in radio to the “theater of the mind” with film was a natural progression. In episode 103 of the SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking, we share insights and the stories Brionne shares from South Africa to San Diego. Brionne began with music videos but decided to go into radio. He had high expectations but fell in love with the experience of working with audio for radio. Radio and imaging production playing with jingles and such, he feels that he “paints a picture in the mind” of the listener. Brionne explains the importance of audio in film, not just the quality of audio, but how audio compliments and completes the story in film. It was during lock down in 2020 that he watched a summit on mobile filmmaking and was introduced and inspired to make smartphone video content. He then began to research the concept of mobile film on Google and then began to learn Filmic Pro. He began to experiment and the more he experimented the more excited he would become. One of his first projects was a paid gig making a music video. He filmed some things during a walk and showed it to someone. He was asked to make the video and it was an opportunity for him to create something serious. He used resources that he found and pay for them using some of the money he made from what he was making on the video. The video ended up being broadcast on a music television channel and no one realized it was shot on a phone until he told them. Brionne Olsen made a film called, Finding Freedom. The story is an inspiring insight into his community in South Africa. Speaking to the social issues of the people. He then began to hear about the abuse of women by their partners during lock downs, and then the story of George Floyd in America. So as he was reflecting on his own freedom and those issues he began to write the poetry that he turned into the film. He asked his niece, Kyra Isaacs, to perform the part in the video and the voice over. It's a powerful video and the structure of the audio he uses includes audio clips that adds intensity and emotional texture to the video. Brionne has also created other videos that are documentaries which are very meaningful to him. He mentions they are a part of his personal journey and expression of his culture and his ancestry. His identity. Close to the end of this episode I asked Brionne to share some key tips filmmakers need to know in order to feel confident when starting to film for the first time using smartphone cameras. Listening to Brionne share his personal stories is inspiring and educational. I found our conversation enlightening and personally inspiring. I am looking forward to following his journey as a member of the mobile filmmaking community and storyteller. SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking: The Voice of Mobile Film™ is for everyone who ever wanted to or is curious about making movies and videos using smartphones. About Finding Freedom: “The truth is that the pursuit of freedom has been a long journey from early civilisation to massive slavery for profits. Economic emancipation for women in the workplace to freedom under law where equal rights are not observed, time and time again we rise up when injustices is a spectacle for the world to see and nothing is done. Kyra Isaacs is a 20 year old woman from South Africa and was born 7 years into our young democracy. Kyra like most young women, are actively making their voices heard but more needs to be done. Kyra is a singer, song writer and artists.” Watch Finding Freedom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uNx9-fwC74 Credits: Music by Music Bed; Written and Directed by Brionne Olsen; Starring Kyra Isaacs. In fact, March through April was the fourth driest early spring period in Washington state since 1895. And ZERO precipitation was recorded in the Tri-Cities in April. March had just 0.12 of an inch Unfortunately, May is not looking much better with 0.19 inch. This is well below normal precipitation for May. Jeff Marti, Ecology's water resources planner, said there are reports of crop stress and reduced yields. He's heard anecdotal accounts of problems from wheat farmers and hay producers already. But, Tri-Cities area residents and farmers who use Kennewick Irrigation District water appear to be in good shape, at least for now. K.I.D depends on snowpack in the Eastern Cascades and up-river reservoirs to fill the Yakima River. And as of May it seems like the water supply for the Yakima Basin should be adequate to meet water rights. That's despite March and April precipitation at the Yakima Project's reservoirs at only 40% of average. Chuck Garner, Yakima Project River Operations supervisor for the Bureau of Reclamation noted that the basin snowpack is holding up well and remains above normal in spite of the low precipitation and the reservoirs have near normal storage. However, in the Walla Walla and Snake watersheds, early snowmelt is leaving less than average levels. In part because April temperatures were higher than normal. So the outlook for the wildfire season is mixed. Chief Mike Harris of Franklin County Fire District 3 said it's already rated as “moderate” for the greater Tri-Cities area - far earlier than usual. But there is one silver lining - the dry spring has limited the fuel available to feed wildfires. Annual grasses like cheatgrass are not as tall and thick as they would be in a wetter spring. So that could reduce the intensity of wildfires. Stay safe, and stay up to date on the conditions at wenatcheeworld.com - Here's what else you need to know about today… Central Washington Hospital was pushed to its absolute limit recently after experiencing a surge of hospitalizations. But they were not related to COVID-19. According to Andrew Canning, spokesperson for Confluence Health - during this critical moment, capacity hit 98% with beds available only in pediatrics, the labor delivery unit, and the mother baby unit. Seven people ended up having to wait to be admitted into the hospital's emergency department. Canning also said that medical facilities in the state and North Central Washington region are also close to full, partially due to COVID-19, but largely because of other chronic medical conditions requiring attention like cancer, heart disease, stroke and infections. The region has very little surge capacity for patients. As of May 27, about 70% of staffed acute care beds were being occupied by patients in North Central Washington. And around 84% of acute care beds across the state were occupied by patients. So what does this mean? Well, according to the “Healthy Washington” COVID-19 reopening plan, the state would begin to rollback phases if the statewide ICU capacity ever reached 90%. And in North Central Washington, about 89% of ICU beds were occupied. Canning emphasized that we're on a good, downward path, but we are not quite out of the woods yet. He also said that Central Washington Hospital continues to see severe cases of COVID-19. It's important to note that more than 97% of these severe COVID-19 hospital admissions came from unvaccinated individuals. So what can you do to help? The Chelan-Douglas Health District is asking that the community be cautious. Stay safe and healthy to help give local health providers a break. - Before we continue, a special thanks to our friends and sponsors at Confluence Health. The announcement came after negotiations with a prospective buyer. For now, no other details are available. The company originally set June 1 as a final operating date, but that's no longer the case. Normal operations at Liberty Orchards will remain in place until the negotiations with this prospective buyer are finished. So you can still visit the candy factory and even take a tour! Three years ago Liberty Orchards President Greg Taylor put the company up for sale. It was decided at that time that if they couldn't sell the business, they would ultimately close it. And in March, Taylor said they hadn't been able to find a buyer and the time had come to close shop. So this is certainly an unexpected turn of events - but we're excited for it! The company was founded in 1920 by Armenian immigrants Mark Balaban and Armen Tertsagian, who owned a small orchard and developed the Aplets & Cotlets candies which became the staples of the company. To stay up to date on what's going on at Liberty Orchards visit us at wenatcheeworld.com The Gorge Amphitheater is an hour outside of Wenatchee. It was originally owned and operated by Dr. Vincent Bryan and Carol Bryan, along with the adjoining winery, Champs de Brionne, for which it was named. It opened in 1986 and seated 3,000 people, but was later expanded after MCA purchased the venue in 1993. Later, The Gorge Amphitheater was acquired by Live Nation. The venue has majestic views of the Columbia River. Apart from drawing big name performers, The Gorge has also played host to an array of popular music festivals, like Area Festival, Creation Festival, Dave Matthews Band Caravan, Honda Civic Tour, Identity Festival, and much more.
Episode 5: Brionne Penny by Prep Insider
Brionne Davis is an actor, teacher, and mentor who currently can be seen playing the recurring role of "Garret Coyne" in the Hulu series CASTLE ROCK for executive producers JJ Abrams and Stephen King. Brionne recently starred in the Oscar-nominated feature EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT, which won the Director's Fortnight at Cannes Brionne gives an incredible performance in this beautiful and deeply moving film about a 19th century scientist in search of a sacred healing plant in the Amazon, led by a shaman who is the last survivor of his people. I have interviewed Brionne in the past, but this interview was very different. So powerful and full of truth about what it takes to be an actor; be fulfilled in life; and bring self-awarness into your life in order to find purpose - not only as an actor but in all aspects of life. An engaging and honest interview that will leave you with an angst to be of service to others. Brionne is a 42 year old wise elder who I consider to be a remarkable person who has shaped our world. Note: Brionne recently starred in the Oscar-nominated feature EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT (now streaming), which won the Director's Fortnight at Cannes. Alex heads to Narbonne High School to chat with the Gauchos' Brionne Penny. The senior is a dynamic punt returner and defensive back headed to San Diego State -- the same place his older brother Rashaad had a historic career.
Actor/Director/Producer Brionne Davis is on the couch talking his small town roots and the nugget of truth that's been burning like lava inside him ever since playing Tom Saywer as a kid in community theater in Paris TX. He talks about how C.S. Lewis' The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe sparked an active imagination, his relationship with his quite opposite older brother, the outsider mindset and his childhood ADD before ADD was really a "thing." The two also share their experiences growing up in two similar racially mixed public schools in what most people would consider two vastly differently parts of the country, before having an open and frank discussion about racism, acceptace, and thier experiences growing up on the privleged side of the skin color spectrum. They discuss how something happens in the formative teenage years that triggers a shift in the social consciousness, and how our tribe mentality lends itself to the rebelious nature of teens as well as some of the guilt they feel for adolescent transgressions. Brionne also speaks to his desire for a world that embraces culture and finds itself in other peoples' history opposed to alienating it. And how his roll in the Academy Award Nominated film "Embrace of the Serpent" helped him do exactly that. Be sure to check out Embrace of the Serpent on Amazon, iTunes or Vudu and look out for Brionne on the brand new Hulu show Castle Rock, based on stories by Stephen King.
