Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life

A bridge does more than just connect two points; it spans a gap, carries weight, and withstands tension. In this episode of The Perfectly Imperfect Journey, we're joined by the incredible Carrington Jackson, a woman who has spent her life embodying the role of the bridge in profound ways. Carrington was the bridge that connected her mother and her father's family, opening up a relationship that had once been impossible. She is the bridge that brings people to their yoga mats - not just to move, but to learn, to heal, and to awaken. And she is the bridge in the fight for racial justice, using her voice, her presence, and her unwavering commitment to equity to create real, lasting change. This conversation is about connection, courage, and transformation. It's about the willingness to step into uncomfortable spaces, to hold the tension between worlds, and to become the link that allows others to cross over into new ways of seeing, being, and leading. Bio: For nearly 30 years, Carrington's study of yoga has been a diverse journey through the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual components of the practice. Carrington began teaching in 2004 and is registered with the Yoga Alliance as an e-RYT 500. Her classes are a canvas of practice, prayer and presence, intertwined with messages of spirit, activism and social responsibility. On a physical level, her teaching is centered on bringing people to a deeper knowing and acceptance of themselves. On a soulful level, the purpose of her teaching is to correlate yoga on and off the mat… ultimately paving the way from the I to the WE.   She currently serves both as a guest instructor for many teacher training programs throughout the country and as a mentor to yoga teachers around the world. Alongside her yoga teaching practice, Carrington is a global retreat leader, passionate human rights activist, community organizer and movement chaplain. Having gratefully learned from many teachers over the years, a few teachers that have greatly influenced her personal and teaching practices are Seane Corn, Rev angel KYODO williams, Hala Khouri, Carolyn Myss and of course the greatest teacher of all… Life. For this first anniversary of the publication of my book, The Essential Guide to Trauma-Sensitive Yoga: How to Create Safer Spaces for All, I'm releasing the Outside the Studio episode I was featured on with Tessa Tovar. We discuss suggested language for shifting power in group settings, how to create after environments, how to practice to reach yoga in a way that includes all, as well as other topics. The Essential Guide to Trauma-Sensitive Yoga has received outstanding reviews and remains an important resource for yoga teachers and practitioners as well as an intro for the yoga curious. "I was so excited to receive this book in the mail. I am an amateur yogi and an aspiring school counselor who believes that trauma-informed ANYTHING is important. I especially love that photos were added to this book for added clarification. I am excited to use this book as a guide for myself and looking forward to eventually sharing this knowledge with others! This book is essential for any instructor who wants to be trauma-informed and very helpful to anyone who practices yoga or wants to start but doesn't know how. I would give this book more stars if I could!" - Melissa Smith “The Essential Guide for Trauma Sensitive Yoga is a comprehensive resource for teachers to understand the complex nuances of trauma and the subtle and overt ways it can present itself in our students. As teachers, we have a responsibility to serve the whole person and that includes sensitizing ourselves to the various ways that trauma lives uniquely in each body, how it influences the mind and perceptions and can affect one's health and emotional wellness. Lara Land deftly provides the necessary guidance, insights, and best practices so that facilitators can support their students on their journey toward healing with more mindfulness, awareness, and skill. This...I...Do...For...Me: Over 50, Black and Fabulous!

Once a year, I get to interview someone who is under the age of 50 to highlight their body of work, especially when they have been intentional about involving older Black women.     Tameka Lawson is a force, and her organization Restored Hope empowers Black women and girls to move beyond the everyday cycles of violence and trauma while working toward discovering inner peace and resiliency within themselves, their families and their communities. Restored Hope offers after school and in school programs that empower young women through trauma informed yoga, various social service resources, and workshops for women. Tameka Lawson is an Advocate for Social Change and is the Founder of the Selah Center for Healing.     Tameka Lawson has been a revered community activist for years, advocating for social change through her work in mindfulness programs in Chicago's Englewood community. Through her efforts, she provided organizations with the tools of mindfulness and yoga to combat the violence that community members often faced. Tameka and Restored Hope received accolades from former First Lady Michelle Obama for the phenomenally impactful work that she is doing.    During a public health brigade in 2019, Tameka recognized that Black diasporans returning to the continent often lacked a proper space to process their experiences fully. This realization led to the creation of the Selah Center for Healing. The center, located in Elmina, Ghana, will offer workshops, yoga, reiki and other forms of healing to help individuals process the information that their bodies receive after visiting the slave grounds. It is expected to open in the spring of 2024.  Tameka is also escorting five African American girls (ages 15-18) to Elmina/Cape Coast, Ghana. There she will connect them to the Ghanaian girls who she works with around the body-mind connection, meditation and leadership development. They will the tour slave dungeons and more importantly process jointly what this experience means for the girls from both sides of the Atlantic. If you would like to assist Tameka by sponsoring a girl, making a financial contribution or helping to provide feminine products, you can connect with Tameka through Restored Hopes's social media pages, the website or by going directly to Amazon (see link below) to view the organization's wish list.     Check out my list on Amazon amazon.com   Tameka is a certified trauma-informed yoga teacher, having trained under renowned teachers like Seane Corn and Catherine Ashton. Her vinyasa flow yoga classes challenge students to express their intentions as they work toward inner healing and empowerment. Her work has been featured in over 20 media publications, including People Magazine and The Doctors TV show. She is also a United Nations Delegate to the Commission of the Status of Women conference. But above all, Tameka is proud to be a mother of her four amazuping children Christopher Jr., Joshua, Ziya-Angeline and Elijah-Michael. Every February, around this time, approximately 8 billion small heart-shaped candies are created and exchanged.  These candies bear messages of love and care, and are often used as gifts to express feelings for another person.   In each episode featuring a guest, we ask them if there are any words of wisdom they might share with their younger selves. These words of wisdom are like those Sweetheart treats, but instead of representing love for someone else, they are messages of love directed to our guests themselves, and by extension, to all of us.  We are so inspired by the wisdom our guests shared, so we put all these beautiful words together, as a little love treat for our listeners.  Enjoy!   Thank you to our amazing guests for their words of wisdom: Donna Peek, Darren Gold, Leslie McGuirk, Mike Robbins, Susan Olesek, Laila Tarraf, Nichelle Trambell Spellman, Rachel Bitecofer, Bridgette Corridan, Mary Lin McBride, Ali Ingersoll, Cara Jones, David Richman, Chris Pierce, Chris Tsakalakis, Jill Santa Lucia, Forrest Wright, Aisha Ponds, Donna Rhode, Kristin Firpo, Marney Sullivan, Deborah Egerton, Rebekah Rotstein, Daryan Rahimzadeh, Kat Gordon, Kat Williford, Jeff Slater, Bryan Gillette, Oneika Mays, Vanessa Loder, Kerri Kelly, Seane Corn, Sarah McDonald, Mary Felice, Shelly Tygielski, Joe Walsh, Rebecca Ward, Nicole Swiner, Natalie Grumet, Marti Grimminck, Ava Lashay, Maureen Aarons, Josh Izenberg, Trish Hegarty, Kim Hunter, Ashleigh Parker, Chris Hendricks, Danny Rosin, Michelle Simmons, Katherine Kennedy, Tony Lillios

Today, Laura catches up with her dear friend, fellow competitive platform diver, and bridesmaid in her wedding, Cristi Christensen. Originally an elite-level gymnast, Cristi went on to train with the US Olympic diving team as a young adult. After an injury cut her Olympic dreams short, Cristi shifted her focus to helping others improve their level of fitness through personal training, Pilates, Core Fusion, and yoga. In addition to a degree in Kinesiology, Cristi has studied extensively for over 10 years with world-renowned teachers including Saul David Raye, Shiva Rea, Seane Corn, Elisabeth Halfpapp, and Fred DeVito. Cristi begins by sharing what inspired her to get into gymnastics, her journey to becoming an elite gymnast, her transition to diving, and the injuries that ultimately ended her Olympic dreams. She goes on to describe what drove her to yoga, how it changed her, and why she eventually began teaching it. Cristi also details her experience as a global traveling yoga teacher, how the pandemic caused her to pivot yet again, and the outcome of her most recent pivot. The episode draws to a close with an overview of Cristi's work to expand the definition of wellness and well-being, and how her style of yoga brings her back to how she grew up. Cristi's story of responding to injuries with her determination to bounce back, keep learning and moving forward will captivate and inspire all who listen into this fascinating conversation today. Episode Highlights: Cristi's transition from being an elite gymnast to an elite diver Diving injuries ended her dream of the Olympics, just as they'd ended her gymnastics career How Cristi's pain and anxiety drove her to yoga How yoga changed her Cristi begins to teach fitness classes, but she refused to teach yoga What changed her mind? How flying by the seat of her pants helped launch her career as a global traveling yoga teacher How the pandemic forced Cristi to pivot yet again The outcome of Cristi's most recent pivot Cristi's work to expand the definition of wellness and well-being How Cristi's style of yoga, which incorporates dance and music, brings her back to how she grew up Quotes: “My mom was like ‘No more. No more. I know it's your dream but we're not risking you being paralyzed.' And there was no pushing… that was the end of my gymnastics career.” “That's just so quick though, too. I mean, you go for a summer, doing a sport you've never done, and you just decide to move for your last two years of high school. Like, that's pretty intense. But it sounds like that's kind of the way you roll.” “I did shatter my left hand into a million pieces. Basically, I had three metal plates and 22 screws to put it back together.” “And that's where joy, like a joy of movement, started coming back. My body was healing, I was connecting to my breath.” “But now I had a new lens on it, because the practice I was doing was healing me and I wanted to be able to share that with others… I taught tons of different fitness classes and was still doing yoga as my personal practice… yoga really opened me up in a way that I didn't even know I was closed.” “Every time you show up and do it, those voices will get smaller.” “I had some really bizarre instances that just made it so, so clear that the way I was living and the way I was working were no longer in alignment.” “I got to a point where the fear of if I failed was much smaller than the fear of actually staying and staying small and staying trapped in something.” “Over the years it evolved… how could something that was so right, now be something that's actually a detriment to the evolution of my career or the evolution of where in my soul I believe I wanted to go?” “I just thought I was going to be hanging out in LA for six months, like figuring it out… but as the opportunities came, I was like, ‘Well, I just have to say yes'.” “I didn't realize I had all my eggs in one basket; I thought I was diversified.” “Everything I teach is based off of ‘how can we use this as a map for our own empowerment, our own awakening, so that we can live a life that is full of color and rich in love and passion and freedom, but really be grounded in this very human experience and be able to deal with everything that life brings?'” “The whole idea was to share women's stories… I want more women's voices to be heard. I want more kids growing up to have more access to role models from different backgrounds.” “I'm not teaching a routine. It's not like ‘5, 6, 7, 8'. It's actually getting you to a place that you feel free enough to express and to move and to breathe, and just enjoy the aliveness and the power pulsing through your body - letting it move, letting the emotions move, letting everything just flow. And it's super powerful and super fun!” Pursuit of Gold Podcast is brought to you by Kaatsu Global. Meet Adi Strigl, resident Yoga Gnome in Doylestown, PA. This conversation is a real dance which all leads back to presence. Just like this Van Gogh quote, "if you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere." I think that's what Adi does. And that's what we did here. And just like gnomes, we go everywhere in this episode! https://www.theyogagnome.com/ Yoga Gnome on IG: https://www.instagram.com/yogagnome/ Yoga Gnome on FB: https://www.facebook.com/theyogagnome/ More About Adi: Adi was introduced to yoga at the age of 16 in her homeland, Israel. It was an unforgettable encounter filled with Sanskrit words and unusual posters which left her curious and mesmerized. It took her a few years to realize the encounter wasn't coincidental. Yoga found her again at the age of 23 and has been her anchor and sanctuary throughout life's adventures ever since. After serving as an officer in the Israeli army and traveling the world, she met her husband and settled in beautiful Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where they live happily with their 5 kids. (3 humans and 2 fur babies). Adi has accumulated many hours of yoga training with many inspiring yogis. Among them, Seane Corn, Rolf Gates, Amy Ippolity, Max Strom, Jillian Pransky, and more. She has completed a 200-hour certificate twice (because yoga is life), and a 300-hour certificate as well. Additionally, she holds a 95-hour children's yoga certificate with a trauma-informed lens, along with Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction background. In October 2020 amidst the pandemic, Adi has discovered a need to share the gift of yoga with kids and opened the first kid's yoga studio The Yoga Gnome in Bucks County, PA. She has a degree in Graphic Design and a passion for music. Adi thrives to bring lightheartedness, thoughtfulness, playfulness, and humor into her classes, and make yoga accessible to all ages and abilities. ---------------------------------------------------- Special thanks to our sponsors:::: Philadelphia Table Company IG: @Philadelphiatablecompany phiadelphiatablecompany.com Native Cafe in Doylestown IG: @nativecafedoylestown 12 South Main Street Doylestown PA 18901 Anthony Ortiz Art IG: www.instagram.com/tonyortizart/ Sevis Brothers IG: www.instagram.com/servisevents/ www.servis-events.com/ Duck Donuts | Doylestown duckdonuts.com Roedale Institute IG: www.instagram.com/rodaleinstitute/ rodaleinstitute.org/
